For a person infected with Covid-19, the classic symptoms can be wide-ranging, from fever and dry cough to body ache and fatigue.
And while these are the most commonly reported symptoms, in some individuals, there can also be gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, such as diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, or discomfort. One review estimated that 53% of people admitted to hospital with Covid-19 experience at least one GI symptom at any time during their illness.
In a new paper, two researchers, Professor Zhu Shu from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) of CAS and Professor Richard Flavell from Yale University, summarised these manifestations in Covid-19 patients, and broke down some of the pertinent questions that still remain, and need further research.
