We have over 2000 [indiscernible] and we want to show [indiscernible] and how did you come up with this idea . No, it was actually his idea. [indiscernible] we are so happy to be here today. What kinds of ideas did the two of you come up with . [indiscernible] virginia, carolina, and missouri who are tackling issues. How does that involve samsung . Samsung is one of the biggest companies. Science, hat technology, energy, and math is sometimes boring in the classroom, but when kids get in the community, it brings it to reality. It is a great way to get a company to support innovation and get more kids excited about science. What are some of the Public Policy issues that you are currently working on . A lot of it is getting more kids interested in stem. But we talk about workforces for the future and how we expect kids and even adults to have the skills. That is a big issue for us, because we are looking at 5g coming into the workplace and the future of connectivity with 5g wireless. How do we Blend Technology along with Skill Development . Thats a big focus. Is the u. S. Behind when it comes to Stem Education . The u. S. Does fall behind compared to other countries around the world, so we like to use it as a Beacon Program so we can encourage others to think change. W to drive and giving them the skills they need to make that happen. Connecting those dots. What is your background . For me, it is the idea of marrying math and music, the Science Behind how everything gets done with Community Change and social impact. What has been the response from your school . They welcome the program. It allows them to be creative and engage with their communities. It encourages them to find solutions. And then way, up with an idea that is workable. Go me to someg to of the students. Thanks for your time. Now we want to introduce you to patia of Deep Creek Middle School in chesapeake, virginia. What are you doing on capitol hill . We are presenting we are presenting the project we did. There are kids who are uninsured. We are making it easier for them. Website,e [indiscernible] are two buttons on the app. It will bring you to a [indiscernible] and you can fill that out, and it will basically send in a mail to us regarding what you need. The same thing with the website. Ok, this is the website, though . Yes. And now hunter is joining us. Where did the three of you come up with this idea . School students at our were struggling to look at the board or cap squinting. We were like, are you ok, do you need our help . It turns out they could not get glasses because they had no insurance, or they just thought it was normal. Like, our teammate, the one in red in that picture, he thought it was normal that he had to squint all the time, but it turns out his eyesight was very bad. Comes to technology, what did you guys do to develop this website . Olivia the website is based in dragon, so it makes it very intuitive for students to create a website of their own, and it is completely free. All you had to do is drag elements like buttons and pictures, and you can link those and take you to another page. That sends you an email. That youd also note can download the app off our website right here. Are you a Science Teacher . Yes. Technologykind of [indiscernible] it was the students idea to develop this website and to reach out on social media to spread the news for our program. They really understand it. It is intuitive, and they use it every day, and now they are using it to help students. Did you find yourself learning from these students . Indeed. I learned a lot as far as developing the app and website and using it to help other students. Technology is integral in their lives, and now they are using it to help other students. Do the three of you worry about things like being hacked or privacy, any of those types of issues . Evenl the time, and Something Like going into a hotel, i was instantly worried about our personal devices on the wifi. When you connect to that and Everybody Knows the password, you can access your device. I was freaking out about it. It is a very dangerous thing in the wrong hands, but it can do Amazing Things in the right hands. What about you ladies . I worry a little bit. It is part of life. Wherever inow that go, my phone is secure, so i dont have to worry that much. But if it is somewhere i dont know and it is over the wifi, i start to freak out a little bit, but i have learned to calm myself. I have never really thought about getting hacked ever, but [indiscernible] so i dont really worry. Too much guys spend time on the screen . Probably. Probably. Well, congratulations. If somebody wants to do this, what is the best website . On our part, as you can see, we will have a link to our website. Is i know it is a long name. We have to pay to make it shorter, so we are working on it. Well, we put it on the screen for a long time. We can accept donations from anywhere. Well, congratulations again. Thank you. Another mining group of the samsung competition, from owens Hill High School in wentzville, Owensville High School in missouri. Where is owensville. It is an hour and a half west of st. Louis, in the middle of nowhere. Towardsce is geared School Shootings and schooling traders. We created a door lock that will be on the outside of the door. [indiscernible] to help put that image in your mind, there will be one bracket on the door itself and one on the doorframe. Whenever the door is closed [lock clicks] that locke will slide in. Even if it is the handle or the lock in place on the door that is broken, our lock will be attached. Where is the technology for this, since you are doing this for samsung . We actually started making this thing before we actually knew about the samsung competition. We had to try to get the project rolling before samsung actually had anything to do with it. We were at this stage by the time we applied. Jonah . Was your role, we had a technical role for me, called the visibility specialist. Basically what that means is to make sure everything is going ok , to plan things out, and to go through with them. Have you thought about connecting this with an app on the phone, so that if you could, you could hit the app and block the door . Have you taken it to that stage . We actually dont want to take it to that stage. We want to keep this very simple. There is nothing complex about it. You slide it in, and thats all you have to do. You dont have to worry about any extra outside factors. Well, thank you and congratulations. Thank you. Three more Award Winners on the communicators this week. What did you win a prize for . The contest was to make something that would help our community, and we ended up deciding on school bus safety. Thats what we did. What we did is we made a sign that im sorry, what . A wireless transmitter on the bus as well as the phone. There is an app that the bus drivers use. Hang on, we will get to that app in just a minute. So this contraption is in the sign, is that correct . No, this is on the bus. This is on the bus. And you have an app here, right, jasper . Jasper yes. This sd is connected to the phone, and when the bus driver clicks on this app that they download to their android device, they click what county they are, what school they are, and then they select their schools route. Then they click start route, and what they do is the route if you click start route, it pulls up google maps, and google maps will give them directions to ,here they are supposed to go and the google maps will help. Ith distances the st connected to the phone thata wireless signal tells what color lights to turn on it. What happens on the sign once the driver connects to the app . The wireless signal will be sent containing the gps accordance of the bus and the route that the driver is taking , and the sign receives that information and since it to a microcontroller, and the microcontroller will see if the , and ifupposed to stop flash ate light will certain distances. At 400 feet, the lights will flash yellow, and at 200 feet the lights will strobe yellow. Can we do that again . I want bobbitt to be able to see the flashing lights as well. So we are at 400 feet at 400 feet, the lights flash yellow. At 200 it just did a nice job flashing. Feet, then at 30 lights will flash red. When the bus moves away, the lights will turn off. Why is it important to turn the lights on the sign . Purpose ists main to alert motorists who are behind the bus or in front of the bus, letting them know the theis stopping, and that bus is going to stop. And also, kids who are at the bus stop when their bus has arrived, and also if there is a substitute bus driver who does not know their route as well, it tells them where the bus stop is so they know where to drop their kids off. Have any members of congress, over to see you guys and look at their invention . Have been a few members of congress that have come over tonight, and we met with a few members earlier today. What do they think . The lights will flash yellow and then strobe yellow. At 30 feet, the lights will flash red. Now what is this . What does he teach . What does she teach . This is our Science Teacher. What are you finding with digital mediums and these kids . It is a different world. They are not afraid to find the answers. They are very innovative and think outside the box much more than adults. And these three kids came up with this project . We have 19 kids on our team, so these three kids and we had three others continuing in new york. They are all very excited and supportive. Did your school receive an award from samsung . One hundreded thousand dollars for technology as well as a Community Choice award, where your Community Votes for your project, and our community [indiscernible] well, congratulations. Thank you. Holly Grove Middle School in holly springs, north carolina. Thank you all. And now we want to introduce to lorraine. What do you do for a living . I worked for ibm in government regulatory affairs. But thats not why you are here on the hill tonight, is it . No, i am a volunteer puppy raiser for guiding eyes for the blind, and the mission is to provide guide dogs to the visually impaired. Ibm is working with guiding eyes to develop a smart collar that so it is not a color that tells dogs would to do collar that tells dogs what to do . The data tells how the dog is responding in the environment. Very crowded, noisy, warm and humid room. Collectedation being by the smart color will help collar collar will help guiding eyes recognize the pattern. So were talking about Artificial Intelligence . Absolutely. It will benefit society in a b ig way in a big way. Why dont you introduce kate . Hi hello what is on your neck . Oh let me bring her around. No problem. Datais is transmitting real time. As she moves the screen over here unsettled, you would see a lot of movement. You want the screens to look like that . Ok. Lets see what is happening. Good girl. I am looking at a Mountain Range now. A calme are looking for dog in a busy environment, looking at this overtime, we will be able to see during most of this event, she was stationary and relaxed, despite the humidity and pressure. Who came up with this . Puppy racernteer do you have a sense of them young . Ey are upimg put into the program have the potential to make it as guide dogs. They have that potential. Some would not make it no matter what. We are trying to uncover the speakers behind this. Did you get into this because of the volunteer work . I have tried to increase the success rate of guide dogs. I have spent a year or more with each one of these dogs. We were talking about all of the Data Collected on each of the dogs. There wasnt the resources to get the insights they needed. Data and loved it. Eyesgh ibm, guiding transferred to their data to the cloud. That made it available for analysis. We started working with a university who had worked with guiding eyes on other projects and developed the smart collar. Puppies ass worn by they go through any valuation. An evaluation. It measures the heart rate. To heart break returns normal when the puppy is going through a series of stressful tests. Also, you can hear the heels. That could be a distraction. The heart rate could return to normal. She has got a running heart rate there. That is fantastic. Thank you. Kate. You have been watching the communicators on cspan. Are available on the podcast.
