Your patients exceeds your good judgment. Thank you, thank you very much. And his family and i have become good friends. We had the most diverse cabinet i think in american history, and i think we had the best cabinet in american history. Spoke. N to you when you i was astounded. You asked your husband to marry you. , i asked myo know wife jill five times to marry me. Not a joke. Five times. Finally, i said, and you will appreciate this because we are all from immigrant pasts, as my mother would say, they got my irish i came back from south africa trying to see Nelson Mandela and getting arrested for trying to see him in Robbins Island in prison, and when i came back, the first thing i did, i landed in philadelphia and went back to her apartment, she was teaching. I knocked on her door and she said, joe, you have been gone i said, im not coming in. Here is the deal. Going to ask you one more time. One more time. You dont have to tell me when, just if you will marry me. I said will you marry me . She went like this. Ok. Sister valerie, asked her, what made you change your mind . I had my two boys. I fell and love the boys. I envy your husband notwithstanding he has passed, i know what is like to lose a spouse. Thank you. A relative from ireland, i did not know she was going to be here. Was mys name father my mothers fathers name was finnigan. One was from county mayo in ireland and the other was from the irish sea. During the terrible potato famine when the british were doing very bad things to the irish at the time, not a joke, my great great great grandfather headeda ship in 1842 and with several of his family members, i believe illegally, to louisiana. New orleans. He made his way north. Are you out there somewhere . Rita. Is the by the way, when i went over to ireland, i had been to ireland many times. ,e caught up when barack obama the Prime Minister kept saying every st. Patricks day, let joe come to ireland. We want to give him 100,000 wilkins welcomes. I went to ireland. Though i had been there many times i had never met my family. They just dedicated an almost 4 million facility to my deceased son who died of cancer. [applause] thank you for being here. The reason i bothered to tell you that is, you know, gary is talking about families. To me it has always been about family. It has always been about family. Each of your families, when they decided to get on a boat or a plane or however they got here and headed off to the United States, they did not know for sure what was going to happen. They were not at all certain things would be all right. They had the courage and the tenacity and the resilience and the optimism to think they could make it, they could do it. I was in Southeast Asia not long ago and actually i was meeting with a group of leaders, and i said to them, the reason america is who we are is because we have been able to cherry pick, i mean this from the bottom of my heart, we are the most unique country because we have been able to cherry pick the best from every continent and culture. The people who come are people who are resilient. People who have courage. Tople who are ready to work provide for themselves and their families. Really, truly. We are a nation of immigrants. The president and many of his cohorts treat this like it is a problem. Imagine what we would be if we did not have immigration. I spent a lot of time when i was Vice President in japan and i had a lot of discussions mr. Abe. Japanese culture, when a woman is well educated, she gets married, has children, she is encouragedin not to stop engaging in the workforce. We dont have a problem with workforce replacement. Thats one of our strengths. People keep coming. A lot of nations are more xenophobic. They dont want outsiders. So what is happening . Japan and said, mark my words. They are going to change their policy just like china is going to change their policy about one child. They are going to have more people in china retired very soon than all the people who work. They cannot sustain it. So what did they do . They did away with the policy. It no longer exists. The United States is the most unique country in the world. An americanefine for me. You cannot define them based on ethnicity, national origin. It is an idea. We hold these truths to be selfevident. All men and women are created equal. It sounds corny, but it is true. We the people, in order to form a more Perfect Union no people in history has been organized based on an idea. They defined almost every nation based on their ethnicity, their religion, or tribe. Guys who we are and this in the white house has no idea. Zero. [applause] i dont want to keep you waiting, but i want to say a couple things leap. Quickly. The fact is the support of your community has been incredible. As soon as this is over they will march me to the door and im going to shake hands with every single one of you who walk across the street to try and caucus. We have not heard from 99 of the aapi community. 95 , 99 ot heard from of the hispanic or latino community. The idea we are going to decide a nomination before we have heard from all of those folks, all of you, is ridiculous. You know, the fact is everyone is going to get a chance to vote and vote early in this state. Barack andhat is why i i call him barack, mr. President to me, i call him barack because i dont want to confuse him with that other guy. But thats why we took the community so very seriously. We appointed more api judges to the federal bench than any time in history and more aapi then every administration before us combined. We reestablished the White House Initiative to expand opportunities throughout the community. And we finally provided compensation for filipino war veterans of world war ii. Long, long overdue. We got it done because we understand who we owe debts of gratitude to. Most people think only about latino immigrants when we talk about dreamers. Doc offered a critical opportunity to thousands and thousands of aapi dreamers as well. It is beyond the latino community. Might immigration plane is going to include a roadmap to citizenship for undocumented people in the United States. Contributing every day, coming out of shadows. And by the way, i propose we not 800,000 we the should be able to increase to 3 Million People, the people who can come for family reunification. Think about it. Think about it. It makes no sense. This is a big, strong, vibrant country. The idea we cannot reunite more families is bizarre. It is what makes us stronger. It holds us together. And folks, the university of las vegas, the university of nevada las vegas, the grant money we , look. The idea there is some limitation on the capacity of the immigrants in this country is bizarre. It is absolutely bizarre. Critically, through the Affordable Care act, we cut in half the number of uninsured aapi community. Thats why im fighting so hard to protect obamacare, not tear it down and start over like trump wants to wipe it out and some of my colleagues in the Democratic Party want to do. 20 million americans have gained coverage under obamacare. Communityin the aapi and 100 Million People in this United States of america had preexisting conditions. A child with as more down syndrome asthma or down syndrome. I was stunned to find out two weeks ago donald trump said the reason we had preexisting conditions covered is because of him. He is a preexisting condition we have to take care of. [cheers and applause] look. Im taking too much of your time, and i apologize. But there is so much to say, so much to do. So many good friends to do it with. The fact is Everybody Knows who donald trump is. We have to let him know who we are. We have to restore decency and honor. The reason why america has been able to lead the world is not because we are the most powerful military in the history of the world. It is the idea, not the power of military, but the power of our example that has caused the rest to riveras. The rest ofre the world to were reducing our standing in the world in a matter of years unlike any time in american history. We have to reestablish the decency and honor about who we are. Everybody know who is donald trump is. Even the his supporters dont want his kids to end up like him. We thought there was a basic code, an american code of honesty, decency, leaving no one behind, treating everyone with dignity, giving hate no safe harbor. Thats who weve been. But look how its changed so, so rapidly. So folks, weve got to let him know who we are. Weve got to show them who we are. We choose hope over fear. We choose science over fiction. [applause] we choose to deal with division. We choose compassion over cruelty. And maybe most importantly, we choose truth over lies. Truth over lies. So folks, its time for us to get up. This United States of america, weve never, ever set a goal weve been able to accomplish when weve done it together. And were going to be together when im president. And i promise were going to take back this country and be the envy of the world once again. Thank you. God bless you. And may god protect ours troops. [applause] thank all of you for joining us tonight. We are not done yet. In fact, comes the most important part. We need all of you to head over to the chinatown mall to cast your ballot for joe. We only have one hour left. We need to be in line by one hour. Im so excited for us to have an opportunity to elect joe tonight. You can cast your ballot. And well have a buffet for everyone.
