That is not a good thing. So right now, we are waiting for tminus seven minutes. That will start the engine chill. Shortly after that, we will also get the fuel shut down. Listening to the spacex launch director in the background. As i mentioned, tminus seven minutes, as we start to chill, we will get into the final topping off of stage one fuel, and then the fuel load will complete. Stage one and stage two, engine chill has started. We have heard the callout. Stage one engine chill has started. Soy have got up to the crew, they have situational awareness. We mentioned the prevalves are open, now we are topping off, getting ready to finish the fuel load. Liquid load will continue until the last three minutes to two minutes of the countdown. We should hear about callout, complete coming up in about six minutes. Rp1 is that densify kerosene or rocket fuel at falcon 9 that will be used to power bob and doug today. Stage i fuel is closed up. Right on time. That callout indicates that the fuel loading on the first stage is complete. Forning back the lines now first aid and second stage fuel are complete. Liquid oxygen loading is continuing on both stages. You can see on the view on the left side of the monitor, the condensation, the coal gas wrapped around the stages, as the tank scans are chilled by the liquid oxygen picking up the humidity. It looks like at this moment, we are a little more than 90 full on the oxidizer on the first stage, picking up toward the 80 mark on the second stage. We will be counting down to around two or three minutes, as john and i said, and then we will be go for launch. Configure for terminal count. Vehicle tanks pressing. Dan they are pressurizing the falcon 9 tank. We are going to open the clamp arm around the second stage and we will move back about two degrees. That will get us into lift off position. The strong back will then decline. The launch director called out the retractor has started on the left. Go back a couple of degrees see it go back a couple of degrees. Stage i has lift. We are four minutes away from lift off. At this moment, bob and doug are just laser focused on those displays. They have inside directly into dragon and the falcon 9. They are able to see where their fuel loading is that, how things are resting with the count. Final set up started. Three and a half minutes from launch. Is nowthe strong back reclining from the falcon 9. Dragon has transmission to terminal count. Stage one, block, load, call back. 2 42. K, we are tminus stage one is closed out. Stage two will continue to load for about another half a minute or so. Once we get to the completion of stage two offloading, we have to vent down the line, so you will see another large, white cloud coming off of the strongvac. That will be normal. That will happen about tminus 1 40. We are going on internal power now. Just a few seconds away from the stage to lock load being complete. A lot of work being done by thousands of people to get to this point. All of our eyes are focused on two now. Stage two is closed up. They are complete. Idle. Is in auto stage two lock, load, complete. All fuel, all oxidizer on falcon 9, 1 44 to launch. The clock is starting. Falcon 9 is in startup. It is con for launch. Under a minute now. The system has been armed. Dragon to spacex, go for launch. Spacex, dragon, we are go for launch. Tminus 30 seconds. Stage i tanks prepping for flight. Tminus 15 seconds. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Zero. Falcon 9 andt off, crew dragon, go nasa, gove spacex, godspeed, bob and doug. [applause] america has launched. The new generation continuing the dream. 20 seconds into the flight is nominal. Are 30 seconds into this historic commission, fly and crew on board Dragon Falcon 9, and look at them go. Nominal. We are throttling down to get ready for the period of maximum dynamic pressure. We are in the throttle. All systems are go. Vehicle is supersonic. We have exceeded mach one on the falcon 9. D throttle up. We are throttling up, back up machll power as we hit 2. Copy one bravo. We heard the bravo callout. They will continue to do that until the first stage has done its job, and it will switch over to the second. At this point, bob and doug 2. 3 timesout 2. 3 gs, the earths gravity, 1500 miles an hour. You heard the callout for the mback engine chill. Right now, everything continuing to look good. The next major event coming up is going to be the triple. We will have made engine cut off of the engine, stage separation, and then ignition of the second stage engine to continue to carry astronauts into orbit. About 20 seconds. D throttle down. You heard we are throttling down to merlin engine on the first stage. Meco. Meco. Falcon. Her a. Copy two alpha. [applause] contact ignition. Alright, we have space separation confirmed, the first stage beginning its flight back, the second stage being powered nowhat single merlin 1a, carrying bob and doug into orbit. They will continue into the power of the second stage. Nominal. Which will cut off at seco, or second engine cut off. A little over five minutes to go still on this the second stage. You heard the callout, two alphas, so this is the longest up to north carolina, up the eastern seaboard, up to canada. Things are looking good, nominal propulsion on that second stage. Bob and doug continuing to make their way into orbit. Dragon spacex nominal trajectory. Spacex dragon, nominal trajectory. All right, hearing nominal trajectory, so dragon pointed in the right direction, continuing to make their flight uphill. One of the other ground stations they are using to get data back. Stage two propulsion is still nominal. A little over four minutes, 40 seconds into the flight, bob and doug flying at more than 5600 miles per hour. Nominal trajectory. Already more than 200 miles from the Kennedy Space center, nominal trajectory continuing. And while they continue uphill, it looks like we are getting a view of the first stage as well. Screen,on your right you can see the first stage with the grid deployed, making its way back, attempting to land, of course, i still love you today. We are a couple of minutes away from the entry burn. That is where three of the nine merlin engines do ignite to help slow the vehicle down as a reenters back into the earths atmosphere. And after the entry burn will be the landing burn, which is just a single burn. Dragon the spacex, nominal trajectory. And you heard that callout, they are still on a nominal trajectory on dragon. Second stage, and that is the engine on the second stage, your left screen. Again, your right screen, that first stage booster coming back. Of course i still love you. We are about a minute away from entry burn. Meanwhile, that second stage continuing to go into orbit. Minutes from two now, we will hear the callout, seco. Stage two propulsion is still good. It will be a little over three minutes until dragon physically separate from the second stage of the dragon nine. Dragon to spacex, nominal trajectory. Dragon copies, nominal trajectory. Continuing to check in with bob and doug, as they are on a nominal trajectory. About 10 seconds away from that first stage, starting that entry burn on your right screen. You should be able to see that you live. Stage one entry burn started. And there is that entry burn beginning. 36 secondsasts about long. While that entry burn continues, we are about a minute away from seco. We will have a number of events all happen in rapid succession, second engine cut off, ready for the stage one landing burned shortly thereafter. Actually just within a few seconds of each other. View on your left screen, seeing bob and doug on dragon, and now you can see the displays that they are seeing right now themselves. Up 25 seconds or so away from seco, or second engine cut off. The point where bob and doug are experiencing the highest geforce. You see the counter pickup. Copy, shannon. You heard shannon, which means they are in their final aboard zone, to abort orbit and land off the coast of ireland. Mback shut down. Secondirmation of seco, engine cut off. Now we are waiting for the first stage to make its way, of course i still love you. Confirmation. Thehat you are seeing on screen is a live view of our drone ship, where the first stage will be coming down. It looks like we lost that live view, but we will wait for confirmation of that landing shortly here. Falcon 9, for stage, successfully landed. And there you see on your screen, falcon 9 has landed. This is the first falcon 9 to carry humans to orbit, so very exciting for us. And as you can see on your right screen, bob and doug are still making their way to their targeted orbits. Recovery one. So exciting today. [laughs] it doesnt stop. It does not stop. We did hear out that next callout, good orbital insertion, so that means falcon 9 and dragon right now are exactly where they should be. We need an frc on recovery launch. 0 gt looks like we saw indicator floating around your dino bob and doug around. I know bob and doug are wondering exactly what that is they brought up with them. And before separation, before dragon initiated separation from the second stage, they do make the they do ensure that vehicle is not spending, and it is in Good Condition before reseparating. That is right. The second stage does a small attitude maneuver using cold gas thrusters built into the rocket body itself. Exactly, so we do expect that separation to occur in about a minute from now, but they do wait until they have full confirmation that it is ready to separate. Such cool views. I cannot get over this view we are seeing right now. Bob and doug on the right screen, inside of crew dragon, out in space. Yeah, already 200 kilometers over planet earth, little over 120 four miles, traveling in excess of 2700 27,000 meters per second, about 16,000 miles per hour. We are just stagnating by standing by. That separation event should happen shortly, and it will be a draco of check on thrusters, power on its way to the International Space station. Standing by for separation. It sounded like we had an expected los, loss of signal come up with one of the ground stations. Waiting dragon separation confirmed. Dragon separation confirmed. There is a great view right in front of you have dragon separating. Dragon separation confirmed. And there is that callout. Dragon is now officially making its way to the International Space station today. [cheers and applause]. Spacex, separation call, we have a few words for you. Standing by. Dragon, chief engineer, dragging the ground, bob and doug, on behalf of the entire launch team, thanks for flying falcon 9 today. Well be you enjoyed the ride, and we wish you a great mission. Thanks. Congratulations to you and the team for the first human ride for falcon 9, and it was incredible. Appreciate all of the hard work, and thanks for the great ride to space. Copy all. Thank you so much for what you have done for us today, putting america back into lower or thorough but lower earth orbit from the florida coast. Copy all. Godspeed. Doug ight, so bob and nominal, firm superdraco section checkoff, deploy in progress. Copy all. We are monitoring. Here in hawthorne thatg the crew a heads up we have confirmation the nosecone is deploying. The nosecone will open up a little more than 90 degrees, comes to i think 195 degrees, and that will expose the actual docking ring and the hats they will be going to once they attach to the International Space station. And also, four of those draco thrusters, the bulkhead thrusters, that will be used for these major phased burns or firing of those thrusters to actually raise their orbit gradually over the coming hours. Also, we heard good activation ss, the environment of controlled lifesupport system, keeping the dragon a habitable environment, where they will be living for the next 19 hours until he arrived at the space station. Exactly. Falcon 9s job may be done for today, but the mission is not over. Crew dragons job is not over. As you can see, bob and doug are in crew dragon, making their way, it will be a 19hour trip to the International Space station before they dock tomorrow morning. And such cool views. I love that we can get these life views here live views here and see what they are doing now that they are in orbit. It is incredible to just be looking over their shoulder, to be along for the ride. And we are going to be with them, and we are going to be it with all of you, the entire way for their journey to the space station. We are going to be covering live throughout. Bob and doug will always lay have a sleep period, where they will get about eight hours of sleep later today before they wake up for their final approach. One of the major things we are will can forward to in the next couple of hours will be their controls, so the they are going to actually be using those touchscreen displays to take control and manually pilot dragon. We will walk you through what that is going to look like, and, assuming we have some good ground station coverage, we will be able to get you right inside dragon, looking over their shoulder as they manipulate the controls at the display. But, i mean, we had a smooth ride uphill both sages of the falcon 9 doing their job, placing bob and doug into orbit. I mean, this is a day, this is a historical day, this is us kicking off the new era of spaceflight we have all been talking about and longing for since the Space Program came to 2011. In and the weather cooperated. Yes second times the charm. Right. So a day for the history books. As you can see, we have lost some live signal there, but the Mission Still continues, and we will turn it over to ksc to continue broadcasting live. Yeah, jessie and dan, we are just in awe over here. When i woke up and looked at the weather forecast, i thought, man, we will be here on sunday, but we did it. Everybody was outside watching, inside, the lights were shaking, cameras were shaking, lauren came back and with tears in her eyes. Lauren [laughs] marie this is really amazing. Lauren i cant believe i saw it with my own eyes. I am a little bit speechless, just so grateful that we got them up there, and theres a lot more to go. A lot more to go, but i am just so happy they are safe right now. I am just so happy. Marie yeah, it is amazing what we can do when we Work Together. Yes, american astronaut on an american rocket on american soil, showing you what americans can do when we come together as a team. Blast bob and doug off to the cosmos. This is what it is all about, and their families and everybody is working together to take them up to space safely. I dont know what to say. That rocket fuel is filling my veins, and i want to go get on the rocket. [laughter] marie it is too late now. Maybe on the next one. I now. I know. Marie we want to get over to darrell and the administrator, who hopefully have more words than we do, because we are speechless. Darrell . Beenll marie, there have applause from the beginning to the end. Some very special guests are here to watch it, including President Donald Trump, Vice President mike pence and nasa administrator Jim Bridenstine. Humana is back, launching astronauts again. Tell me how you feel about that, and tell me about the president watching the launch and what happened there. Mr. Bridenstine so this has been a long time coming. It has been nine years since we launched american astronauts on american rockets from american soil, and now it is done. We have done it. I want to give a lot of credit to charlie bolden. He was my predecessor as a nasa administrator. He fought hard for this when it did not get any support in congress. We now have an administrator that is fully of our spaceflight administrative, not only on discovery, going to the moon onto mars, but also from a space force perspective. Our budgets are going up, and it is just an amazing think youre one of the things the president did right out of the gate when he became president izzy created the National Space council, and he put the Vice President is chairman of the National Space cancel. Counsel. You have got the secretary of defense, secretary of commerce, the secretary of transportation, secretary of education, the chairman of the joint chiefs, all of these different, amazing individuals that deal with space day in and day out. A lot of people do not realize how many different parts of the federal government deal with space. The Vice President invited those members of the National Space council here as well. Then we have members of congress, bipartisan members of congress, republicans and democrats, who have been involved in supporting this program for a long time now. So i will just tell you, i am breathing a sigh of relief, but i will also tell you i am not going to celebrate until bob and doug are home safely. Tomorrow, they are going to talk to the International Space station. Tonight, i am heading to houston to be at the Johnson Space center when that happens. It is a bit of a relief. The nosecone is now open. It is now deployed, which means that, you know, now we are going to go into some burns. We are going to have some phasing burns. We are going to have some, you know, boosting burns, and we will get as much as we can in alignment with the International Space station as early as possible here, but also, i know it is hard, but, you know, the big thing to do now is we have got to get bob and doug, who has now gone through this exercise twice, they need to get some rest, but i can guarantee you, there will be no rest for a good amount of time while they are of in orbit. Are certainly on their way, and a lot of people joining us for this rocket celebration, as we just heard, 10 Million People watching live as this launch happened, and President Donald Trump becoming the third sitting president to watch a launch live from the Kennedy Space center. Mr. Bridenstine to be clear, i think he is the only sitting president to watch american astronauts to launch on a brandnew rocket that has never launched before, and that is a big risk. You know, he also said we are going to go to the moon by 2024. He is putting himself at risk to say look i am going to be accountable, potentially, i am going to be accountable to the initiatives that i put forward, and we have not had that kind of leadership for space in a very, very long time, and we are so grateful for it. Darrell what is it like watching the launch with the president . How did he react . It is something that is near and dear to him. He put a in the state of the union speech, we are going to launch american astronauts on american rockets from american soil, and i was thinking, we had better get after this. Of course we worked overtime to make it happen. We might be a little bit behind schedule, but we got it done, and we got it done safely. We are knocking on wood, but so far, so good, it is looking good. You personally, jen, when you felt that rumble, what were you feeling . Mr. Bridenstine i was excited, praying for bob and doug, praying for their families, praying for their safe return them even though they are just going. Before, eard that rumble but it is a whole different feeling when you have got your own team on that rocket, and they are our own team, they are americas team, this is launch america, everything america has to offer in its purest form, and times are tough right now. There is no doubt. We have got the coronavirus pandemic, we have other challenges of the country, but i hope this moment of time is an opportunity for everyone to reflect humanity and what we can do when we Work Together when we strive and when we achieve, and if this can inspire a young child to become the next elon musk or the next jeff bezos or the next server to branson, that that is what this is all about. Darrell for the next Jim Bridenstine. Mr. Bridenstine [laughs] i would not put me in that category. Darrell we appreciate your leadership for the space agency at this time, and congratulations on an amazing day and a launch. Mr. Bridenstine thank you. It has been a great ride. Darrell we will send it back to you in the studio. Lauren doug and bob are on course to land tomorrow, may 31,. We break away from our nasa tv coverage after hearing from a nasa director Jim Bridenstine to hear from you and your reaction to americas return to space, the first manned blastoff crew from american soil since 2011. We have opened up our phone lines, as you have seen on our screen, 2027488000 for those of you on the democrat side, republicans, use 2027488001, and for all others, 2027488002. Astronauts in orbit on their way to the International Space station. The docking happening there on sunday. We will have live coverage of that. Scheduled now for about 10 20 eastern tomorrow. We will have that live on cspan as we look at video from earlier of the lift off this afternoon about 25 minutes ago, at 3 22 eastern. Lets go to calls and hear from eric in illinois. Go ahead. Host the nasa director, Jim Bridenstine, saying in the interview a short while ago he is heading next to houston to watch the docking to the International Space station. As doug hurley and bob behnken board the International Space station tomorrow. We want to let you know, also, we are expecting to hear from President Trump this afternoon, the president returning to the Kennedy Space station today for the lift off. That is scheduled for about 5 00 eastern, i believe. We will keep you posted on coverage plans as we continue with your calls. This is andrew next in massachusetts. Caller congratulations to spacex. Host doug hurley is the commander of the spacex crew dragon, and bob behnken, his partner there, both became astronauts in 2000. Doug hurley was aboard the atlantis, the Space Shuttle atlantis, the last one in 2011. Madison, wisconsin next. Ed, how are you . Caller yes, good afternoon, and thank you for this fantastic event today. Host you bet. Isler my grandson said he going to be the first man on mars. Host ed, how old is your grandson . Caller eight years old. Host so he does not even really remember the Space Shuttle program. Caller yeah. No, but he is looking forward to it. He said, i will be the first astronaut on mars. Host give us a sense of his reaction when he saw the rocket take off, when hes a video inside the when he saw a video of the echelons inside the capsule as it made its arc up the coast. Caller one word, jawdropping. He was fixated on the screen. Focused. Host probably from the days of the early Space Shuttle, now you have big tvs, you can really enjoy it, right . Caller he had a spacesuit on it everything. Host did he really . That is great. Thanks for that. Have a good weekend. Richard, we go to louisiana. Richard, your thoughts, go ahead. Caller yes, sir, it is a great day for the country, and i want to say thank you, mr. Trump. Appreciate it. Host ok, President Trump at the lift off today, as he was wednesday. The Vice President as well, who is head of the space task force. The president is expected to make comments this afternoon sometime around 5 00 eastern. We will go to jim in south carolina. Jim, go ahead. Caller thank you very much for the opportunity to say hello, and we are very proud of spacex, nasa, and the president. Go nasa. Host ok. All the way from hawaii, and a loja to clark. Hello there. Caller aloha. Host you are on the air. Go ahead, clark. Caller i just want to remind everybody that nasa and all the events that have happened started with president kennedy and the democrats, and it has moved through life till now, but after nine years, i am so pleased to cs back in the Space Program. Aloha from hawaii. Host clark, why do you think it is important that the United States be back, not only in the manned Space Program, but providing lodges from the United States, in this case, the historic pad at the Kennedy Space center . Caller well, it is a wonderful thing to be back. I think it is good, because all of us are worried about the events happening, and that we were going to get out of going to space, and learning about our world, because it is a small , but i think it is great to see us back, and i am glad we are spending the money to go back. Host clark, what are the one of the differences with the spacex rockets come in this case, the falcon 9, has been the return of the rocket, the reusability of those rockets, which you heard about and some of the precoverage ahead of the launch, if you are watching. They were able to show they lost the signal for a bit, but they did show the very end of falcon 9 making the sticking the landing, as they say, taking the touchdown on the barge off the coast of florida. Lets go to san diego next and hear from stella. Stella in san diego, you are on. Hi, we just want to wish the not great luck, and hope everybody gets out and votes this november. Yeah hi guest host [laughs] take care. Caller as a turkish man, this was my first launch. This was amazing. I hope they make it safe. Host you have never seen a manned rocket launch, correct . Caller no, first time. My country does not do this. It was mind blowing. Host 2027488000, 2027488001 , or 2027488002. Sally, bakersfield, california, hello there. Caller hi. This is so exciting. I remember standing on the minute maid causeway, my husband was an engineer with the minuteman, and we saw launches from there, and the ground shakes like you would not believe, and it is just so exciting. But what really excited me about this launch is i was waiting for it to go downrange, where it hangs a right. There is a propulsion system, little more a command you have the retro rockets on the side to turn it, hang right, and this did not do it. I thought, wait a minute, it hung a left. I thought, my goodness, they are doing it differently. They are going up range now. Then they talked about ireland and everything, i thought, oh, my gosh, this is so exciting. Wow [laughs] and i am 78 now. I was in my 20s than. You know, it is just, my heart is pounding, i am so excited. I am so happy to see this wonderful launch. And i am so glad private enterprise has it, and they can go for all these wonderful things they have done that are so new to all of us. Host great to hear from you, sally. We will hear from bill next. The video we are seeing is not live, a short while ago after the separation of the falcon 9 and the space capsule. To bill in fountain inn, south carolina. Caller yes, we are just watching. It is one of the best things that has happened in america in a long time. We are very excited. My daughter, rachel, was just talking about it, and, um, seriously, this is what america needed. We are really grateful. Thank you. Host ok, denver, colorado. You are on, good afternoon. Caller yes, i would just like to say that i have thought that this was one of the most amazing could we in the country have witnessed, especially during these times. This was just absolutely incredible to see, the manpower, the energy, the emotions. Im almost host its all right. Caller this is incredible to witness, these people, the sacrifice, what they are going through, what we all have been going through, staying home, this is a feat that we all needed to witness. Host you mentioned the word emotion there, vane, why do you think this although it has been nine years since men have lifted into space, since astronauts had lifted into space, why do you suppose this one felt more emotional to you and to other americans . Caller well certainly we need something to look forward to in these times. We are locked in. This is an American Opportunity as well. We have been hitch sorry, piggybacking on other countries, leading our men into space, and now we have been able to do this. Elon has been able to do this. Spacex has been able to do this. The team behind them this is just very, very emotional, very powerful. I mean, i cried when i watched this launch, and i hope that a lot of other people did, too, because this is really, really special, for what we need to do moving forward, and to have a goal for moving forward. A lot of people are down right now, and a lot of people are looking for something to look up and this is the most up we can go, and this is the best symbol of where we are, how we are still strong, and how we are going to host i appreciate your insight into that. We will go to austin, texas. Alessandro . Thought it was amazing and supercold to see the rocket take off. I have never seen that before in my life. It was amazing. I love everything about space and science and it was amazing. Host tell us how old you are . I am 11. Host you are 11 so you do not remember the Space Shuttle that ended nine years ago and you were pretty young men. The First Mission with people youve seen blast off in the United States, right . Caller yes. Host does this if you an idea that you would like to do something, be involved in the Space Program or work for a Space Company . Caller yes, that would be really cold. Especially to do it through the military, it would be amazing, really cool. Host david is next, in north carolina. It is a great day for all americans, it sure is. Most hard to believe. America has stepped forward again and took the reins and god bless. Host sorry, i did not mean to cut you off. Caller it is a great day in american history. It is almost rest taking almost breathtaking. Caller mentioned President Trump, who is supposed to make comments this afternoon around 5 00 or so, as we look live here. I do not know if this is Kennedy Space center or houston. President rn from the and we may also get a briefing from nasa officials sometime this afternoon, and we will hope to bring you that as well. We are going to hold on calls and we have comments from President Trump. Lets show those to you now. Mr. President , what did you think . Pres. Trump it is incredible. The technology. The power. And i am so proud of the people at nasa. All of the people that worked together, public and private. When you see a sight like that, it is incredible. The power of that machine. And the danger. No matter how you figure, when you hear the sound and the roar, you can imagine how dangerous it is. When you feel the shake, and we are far away, but you feel the shake over here. It is amazing. A beautiful sight and the beat of a ship, and a beautiful ship, too. That is a big part of the danger, what you just witnessed. Site we are very honored to be here. Have you talked to elon . Pres. Trump yes i spoke to him and i speak to him all the time, a great guy. He is one of our great brains. We like great brains and elon has done a fantastic job. That was a beautiful sight to see and i hope you all enjoyed it. We will be saying a few words inside so i hope to see you inside. It is a great honor to have you here in. [indiscernible] pres. Trump i did. Just god bless you. Theres nothing else you can say. More current. More courage. Even our congressman, our senators, would you do that . I dont know. Do you know who would do it . Brian would do it. I would be the first one, if it was legal, for elon to give us a ride. An amazing honor. Four years ago this place was essentially shut down. The Space Program was over, the Shuttle Program was dead. One of the secret service men said they were here when a past administration, and i will not tell you who, and they were here to shut down the facility. And now we are the leader in the world again. This is just the beginning. We are going to mars. We are going to the moon, going to the moon in order to go to mars. Jim, would you say that is a correct statement . Yes. Pres. Trump i want to congratulate you. [applause] and congratulate the Vice President. [applause] and the governor of florida. [applause] and requisite great governor and rick wasat senator a great governor and now a great senator. [applause] we appreciate everyone being here and this was a tremendous site to see. I said would, you hear anything . Because we are great distance away. And then you hear that roar. You are not think that machine, what have that kind of power and make the kind of sound, or that vibration. And it is really something special. So im going to be saying a few words to you inside so we will see you in a couple of minutes. Host President Trump from within the hour at the Kennedy Space center after the launch. The space x crew dragon from pad 39a of the Kennedy Space center. And we expect more from the president and we will bring that to live if we can. 2027488900 democrats 2027488901 republicans 2027488902 others your reaction to the launch today. Amercos return to space americas return to space. The first time lifting off since 2011 from pad 39a. We will go to cheryl with comments. Caller it is wonderful to be happy about something here, after all that is going on in the world. We are in san pedro, 20 miles perMission Control and spacex from Mission Control. And hawthorne, which makes it extra exciting for us. Our grandson wants to be an astronaut. He is seven years old now. It is so exciting. I want to wish safety to the astronauts, and safety to the world. Thank you very much. Host thank you, and a couple of more calls here and then we will go back to nasa and we expect to hear from the president and perhaps other nasa officials like the launch. We want to remind you that the docking at the International Space station set for tomorrow eastern and we will have that for you. Now miles from tennessee. Caller im a fan of what elon musk is doing and i think it is very inspiring. I expect to see [indiscernible] on the next rocket. Host marcella, go ahead. Ela,er my name is maris from costa rica, but he texas. I have cried all morning. We forget how amazing our brain and creativity and dreams can be. Congratulations to everybody. God bless america. May his grace be upon us. And keep shining. I am a ventriloquist. I am also an educator. One ofrage children my puppets is alex the astronaut. He is encouraging kids to dream big. Videossaw earlier, the on how the suits were made, i saw these beautiful ladies sewing. We forgot about those details. So thank you so much for everybody who has been part of all of this. Host thanks for that and we will take you back to nasa to be covered in a moment. Lets get one more call from say paul, minnesota, philip . Paul. Philip, go ahead. Caller good job, nasa. Space x, good luck, bob and doug. Host we appreciate all of your calls and we will take you back now to live coverage from nasa tv. A report, the same time the crew does on how the burn goes. We are looking for those words, good burnafter it is complete. This is the first of five major burns we will be performing over the next coming hours. This is the first major step in the free flight of demo 2. Loss of signal. Roomine whirring background sound] we are two minutes into our phase to burn. Phased burn. Everything looking good, so far. [bee] [beep] dragon, spacex, burn is nominal so far. We have confirmation burn is nominal. We concur, thank you. Bob and doug have insight through the Touchscreen Control Panel they have in front of them, those three screens. When we get video inside the cabin back when we are doing the manual flight test, you will be able to get a closeup look at how they have their window into dragon itself. We are coming up on three minutes into our first major t path totheir onorbi the space station. If you are just now joining, we are three minutes and 45 seconds into the phased burn, the first major burn. Youre getting a look inside the space Center Control center inside hawthorne, the team responsible for looking over dragon and bob and doug on their flight to the International Space station iss and we will have intermittent video with the dragon spacecraft itself when we are over ground stations, and only when we are doing some different maneuvers. Right now we are continuing to listen in. That first burn is going well. Every sing a one of these burns is critical, to actually making it to the International Space station iss . It seems like a pretty quiet time right now, but thrusters are firing on the dragon space craft as we speak and they have been doing so for four and half minutes. We have three minutes to go and everything is looking good so far. I remember during the deorbit, International Space station iss International Space station iss leaving me, leaving the International Space station iss broadcast, we were say it feels like it takes forever to do anything. Everything is super controlled, very precise, and very exact in terms of timing and adjustments. This is a critical moment. Definitely one of the first Exciting Events we have in dragon, as it is now free flying. Weto let you know, anytime have video with the crew during the flight, we will do our best to bring it to you. We are getting a quick check in on the teams and Mission Control and hawthorne. These are the people behind the scenes who have done so much to get us to this day, taking part in simulations and mission planning, with the crew themselves. Youre talking countless hours, just rehearse everything for this flight before we get here. And we are here. We have a successful launch, which we still have not come down from and that was incredible. Everything has gone smoothly so far. A good initial orbit. The burn started right on time. We are six minutes into the burn and there should be one minute or so left. As you have heard us say, prior to lunch and after launch, bob and doug have rehearsed everything a procedure with the space x for this mission. Everything they are doing now and have done all day, despite the scrub earlier in the week, was an extra practice test, which was awesome. But it was nothing new for them. They had rehearsed everything. The same goes with this. All of the procedures we are running through now and will continue running through for the duration of the mission, bob and doug are super familiar with what is going to happen and what they are expected to do. We should be coming up near the end of the phased burn. This is the first of five. The next major one will be the boost burn which will raise their orbit up to 10 kilometers below the space station itself. They are going to get closer and closer, and these incremental steps. You will see in these in this graphic, when they do these burns, it looks like they are kind of doing a loop the loop. This graph is in relation to the space station itself. yne access, on the and on ther below, how far. Dragon to space x, nominal burn. Nominal burn. We just heard the two words we were hoping for, nominal burn. So one burn out of five, checked. The next one coming up will be burnin about an hour and 20 minutes. Before that we will look to the manual flight test where they will be taking the reins, and taking control of dragon itself. In preparation for that moment, i highly encourage you to check out the simulation we have on spacex. Com it is an awesome opportunity for you to test your own skills at steering. Dragon, spacex, we are disabling cameras. Andare go for suit doffing camera and cabin config ration. The camera casts which will be centered can be found in location eight. Cameras are currently configured. Dragon copy, suit doffing. Are in placemeras and we can do doffing. Copy, over. Dragon, at your convenience, if you can confirm gas detectors are off, location 14. Wilco. What is going on at this point is, bob and doug it now have the opportunity to take their suits off. This is referred to as doffing , as donning is putting the suits on. They will be able to remove the suits at this time and get more comfortable in the cabin. They will put the suits back on when they get closer to the International Space station iss . Checkly encourage you to out the simulation we have online, where you can test your skills at steering dragon and docking it to the International Space station iss . The website is iss. Sim. Spacex. Com. And you can test your own skills at flying dragon. Dragon, spacex, one additional note, the next burn will be the boost burn, and one hour and 23 minutes. Copy, thank you. Definitely gives the crew dragon talking demonstration a try. It is a lot of fun. Demonstration. It gives an idea, you have imaginable. Axis my first couple of tries i got impatient and flew in way too quickly, and it one time started to spin wildly out of control, so it is probably good i am down here. But it is on fun to check out. I was surprised also at how many levels of control there are, and how difficult it is to that them all to work in synch at the right speeds. It is unanimous, everyone have spoken to what to fast the first couple of tries. But my third or fourth try, my decades of training finally paid off. I managed to dock to the station after practicing a few times. Check. X dragon, and, dragon, you are a little broken, but i did copy you. Time . About this im here on the cabin mic. Loud and clear on the cabin mic. Copy that. Anything to say . Burn nominalfirst and outoftheway, the next one coming up in an hour and 20 minutes, the next thing we will look forward to is this manual free flight. Crew dragon is designed to fly autonomous, meaning a spacecraft does all of the navigating goes to the station on its own. There are override controls on the spacecraft and they enable the astronauts to step in and take control should any issues arrive arise. Bob andthose controls, doug are about to do the first of two planned manual maneuvers inside dragon. Touchy will be using the screen controls we have seen in the webcast. They will practice putting dragon in lvlhattitude. local vertical, local horizontalconfiguration means they will use our itself as a guide, and reorient dragon with the nosecone pointing forward, and the bottom of dragon and at the bottom of dragon from where up and doug are sitting, the earth will be directly below them. They will be putting dragon in the same orientation as in a praying as an airplane flying over earth. They will be taking Manual Control but stop one step before actually sending the command of their attitude adjustments to dragonfly computer. So the flight computer they will stop one step before actually sending the command of their attitude adjustments to dragons flight computer. Station only flies in that lvlh, always going the same direction because it has big joints for the solar arrays to rotate around. Four dragon they will have to maneuver the tuck the truck to charge the batteries and maneuver for satellites depending on which antennas they are using so this lvlh will be a test for the manual flight test. And there is the simulation online, where you can check out for yourself. Definitely go pilot dragon. We will see that tomorrow morning. It was surreal when we got to see it on demo1 with dragon coming in. We have great cameras on that port where dragon will be pointed and it will be very exciting to see them come in for the final approach. Dragon, spacex, no response required. We are going to be enabling brent to of the helium system and this is expected to be done on orbit. And dragon, spacex, clarification, this will get us back into the expected onorbit config. Copy. Gon, properon, spacex, reconfiguration is complete and expected. [beep] missed there, you launch so you may want to head online and go back and check that out. Bob behnken and doug hurley are flying now you can see where dragon is over planet earth. You will see a number of lines, usually three at a time, and that is showing each orbit around planet earth for the spacecraft. It looks wavy because youre taking a globe and stretching it out flat. It is a Straight Line if you are looking at it around the globe. With that ontime launch, they have already traveled well away from the Kennedy Space center. They are downrange in excess of 600 miles. They will continue to fly around the planet earth. They will continue to raise their orbit over the next 19 hours. They were successful in doing so with their first turn burn. Wedragon pursuit, doffing, started a timer for drying the suits about 4. 5 minutes ago, if you want to back us up. Confirming, timer started for suit drying, 4. 5 minutes. That was the crew talking to Mission Control hawthorne. Or gottens doffed, out of there sue that they have had on for hours their spacesuits that have had on for hours, and they have a timer to dry them. They will not have to put the spacesuits back on until tomorrow when it is time to dock with the space station. The view on the right side of and dougen is, if bob were looking out the window, that is what they would be seeing, a live shot from dragon. With planet earth rotating below it. They are going to continue to make their way up, over the next couple of hours. We have a number of items coming up for them. We are counting down to the manual flight test that should come up within the next halfhour. That will be bob and doug actually taking control of the dragon spacecraft for the very first time. That will be very exciting and hopefully we will get video inside the cabin. We will have video in the cabin any time the crew is ready for us to come on board and anytime we have connections through, ground stations through space xs Worldwide Network of ground stations to Committee Kate with the space to communicate. Thectually that looks like International Space station iss , where bob and doug are heading. This is just the beginning of hour journey for them. They have a lot coming up. There are five main burns and we have completed the first of those five main burns. They will be going to sleep in a while. They will eat first. Then they will get to sleep. That sleep portion of the mission is really important. We need them to be really well rested and comfortable, whenever they start doing the approach phases, to the International Space station iss . So they are scheduled eight hours of firemen were correctly. They are scheduled for eight hours, if i remember correctly. 4. 300 is complete. Is complete. 0 again, that is bob and doug getting the cabin configured, getting out of their suits and getting more comfortable, and hopefully we will get to the manual flight test in a little while. They will have eight hours of sleep schedule but i do not know how you can go to sleep on a day like today. But i also do not know how they were as calm and collected as they were. Again, youre dealing with special people when you are flying somebody into space. Yes and as you saw from our views inside the cabin earlier, they will be sitting in a sitting position while they are sleeping, whereas on the International Space station iss , they have a flat bed they get strapped in. The sleeping situation they have for their ride on dragon is different than what they will have on their longer stay on the International Space station iss . To walk you through quickly, we are looking live now, from bob and dougs destination, International Space station iss . They are scheduled to dock pacific at 7 29am, time, so on the west coast and 10 29 a. M. On the east coast. It will be nine hours and seven minutes if they docked directly on time from lunch to docking. It will take five successful burns to get them in close proximity to the International Space station iss , followed by a number of smaller maneuvers to the wrong video in the final approach sequence two that ron dave you to the rendezvous in the approach sequence. Docking. To they continue to raise their orbit and chase down the space station. They willet there, join the expedition 63 crew, already in progress. Chris cassidy is there on the right of the photo, joined now by two russian ivan, auts, anatoly, and who have been on board since they launched several weeks ago. Now it three person crew on board, one of the major reasons we wanted to get this commercial crew capability online. Soyue no long are flying 4 z per year, only to prayer. So we need this and eventually the boeing space liner to carry cruise to orbit. Only 2 per year. They will reside inside the usos segment, have to station. Pursuitn, spacex, drawing, low priority. Go ahead. \ we wanted confirmation you 2 in seat 1,it since we are not seeing telemetry. Affirmative. Is seat 2 is in seat 21. Is in seat 1. At this point, the crew is out of their suits, and they are drying them, so they are connecting them to the umbilicals of the seats they not using. If you look inside the dragon capsule, it goes from seat one and they are getting their suits connected to canumbilicals, which provide between occasions and you can flow air and they are using that to dry them out now that the crew is not wearing them and their comfortable on orbit. I can imagine that despite airflow going through the suit throughout launch and launch itself, with the adrenaline and their hearts pumping, i imagine it might have gotten sweaty in their. There. Like hanging your laundry in space almost. They will be out of the suits for the next several hours and get more comfortable the dragon capsule. They will wear them again when it is time to dock. We typically have astronauts suit up when they are in a dynamic operation. So that is a launch. Anytime youre talking or undocking from the spacecraft. And on reentry and landing. These suits are custommade for bob and doug, so there is no chance they might be able to put the other ones on. Their name is stitched on it for obvious reasons. These suits are highly intelligent and highly functional. So even though they will be more comfortable out of the suit, they have said the suits themselves are nice to sit in. As you can see from todays events and the launch attempt we have before, they do spend quite a bit of time in those suits. They are custommade for each individual astronaut, made hawthorne, ca,in and the same building where we built the rocket and built the spacecraft. So it is interesting to see that piece of hardware itself, now in dragon. Finally, we have talked about how the suit is all must to many spacecraft itself and we say that when the crew goes out for spacewalks. Because the suit is self contained to have the breathing air just in case they need it. Specifically for flight suits on dragon, they will be most needed if you have a depressurization or loss of cabin pressure, inside of dragon. Theyre able to be in their suits and get pressurized nitrox, or even pure oxygen, and their suit will be in a lower pressure. Because if you put the suit all the way up to 14psi, it would be like wearing the large emu, like wherefore spacewalks. Pressurizing that to atmospheric pressure would be you and a giant balloon where you cannot move your arms easily. When youre in a suit that is pressurized, your typically at , and im not sure what the space x suits are out and youemus are at 4, have to up the oxygen to get enough. So they will be able to flow pure oxygen into those suits if required. If youre just joining us, we have lifted off. Bob and doug are now on their way to the International Space station iss . An hour and a half into hat will be a 19hour journey, chasing down the space station. We are approaching what is known as the far field manual flight test. This is the opportunity they will have to take back control of the dragon capsule, and performed the ability to pilot it manually. Dragon is a fully autonomous spacecraft, meaning it drives itself. It is highly intelligent. The flight compare makes all the calls using input from the sensors and data it receives. So, realistically, this is meant to be a fairly handsoff flight to the International Space station iss . But, in the event that for some reason, bob and doug or whatever astronaut is on board crew dragon, might need to take Manual Control, the far field manual flight test which we have coming up in a few minutes, is what we will be doing, to complete the test objective for this mission, saying yes, that it is possible to do. It is there in the mission. It is Demonstration Mission 2. WeDemonstration Mission 1, did not have crew but we did a final approach and even docking. So bob and doug are on board to put it through the rigor, to put all the system through the ringer. This will be the final test before nasa looks to certified space x to begin regular crew flies to the space station, for missions of six months to one year, with crew members and working in space. We are looking to do that later this year as soon as we wrap up with demo 2. As soon as a month after bob and doug return, we will look for the next crew to go up. Three nasa s brought three nasa astronauts and one from japan. We are at the start of this mission. It is hard to imagine we are ticking forward to the next one so quickly. But that is the nature of the business now. Things are picking up in space. As a spacex engineer, part of my job is to help nasa come in and certify the hardware we are building. I have been inside of the capsule that is now in space. I have been inside the capsule mentioned earlier, the dragon clean room, hallway from us which is now in a different building, for it to complete highpressure testing. As someone who has spent the last five years working for this mission we are executing today, it is so surreal to now be performing the parts of testing, of demonstrating, with the astronauts. I storm ever hearing the comes check on wednesday comms check on wednesday, preflight, making sure all the key players in the mission could contribute could communicate back and forth, as well as with bob and doug. I got chills whenever i heard that tone of them commit to getting back and forth to Mission Control. Yes, it was great to see them get off the ground today. Hopefully, we will see them in 10 minutes or so doing this flight. We will follow along and we are here for the duration. Dragon, spacex, fourtime line. For timeline. Go ahead. Have theareness, we manual flight demonstration here in 10 minutes. As soon as that is complete, you have your go to step into your meal three. Be aware the boost burn is at 21 42. So those three events will be close in succession. Thanks for the update. Yes, we were looking at that. I think we are about changed so we will give you a goat to come back on board here and maybe five minutes or so. Copy that and we will be standing by. At your discretion, you can d estow the floater camera prior to 22 38. Copy that. Andhould be joining bob doug inside the dragon capsule in five minutes or so, then we should see the manual flight test in 10 minutes from now. The International Space station iss is flying and lets get a look at the ground track. It is flying over the Pacific Ocean southwest of mexico, about to swing out over the central part of the United States. At the time of launch, it was over north carolina, and passed over the cape, minutes before flight. We were able to get a couple of images down from the current expedition commander, Chris Cassidy. Ats is of that path, 39a, the Kennedy Space center, with the rocket still there taken two minutes before the launch. That is incredible. Eagle eye for Chris Cassidy to snap these and we literally got these down so we want to share them with everybody. The space station was flying directly over at the time of launch. We are almost at an hour and a half since launch. Gones already almost around the entire planet and it is about to cross over the United States in the next couple of minutes. This is live simulcast coverage from nasa tv. We expect to hear from President Trump in the next 10 minutes or so and we will have live coverage of that, here on cspan. While we wait well take you back an hour and a half or so to the launch this afternoon, of the spacex crew dragon from the Kennedy Space center, at 3 22pm eastern this afternoon. T 30 seconds. Stage one thanks, pressing for flight. T 15 seconds. Nine, eight, seven, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0. Ignition, left off. Crew, lcon nine and dragon. Go nasa. Go spacex. Godspeed, bob and doug. Start of mvac engine right now everything continuing to look good. Next major event coming up. [applause] is going to be the trouble. We will have main engine cut off of the nine engines, state separation and then ignition of the 2nd stage engine to continue to carry astronauts into orbit. Coming up in 20 seconds. N1d throttle down. We are throttling down the merlin engines on the first stage. State separation confirmed. [applause] copy. [applause] mvac ignition. We have state separation confirmed. The furred stage beginning its flight back. 1st stage beginning its flight back. The 2nd stage carrying bob and doug into our bit. State to propulsion is nominal. Part of the launch earlier today, with the last hour and a half, spacex crew dragon from the Kennedy Space center. If you minutes we expect to hear from President Trump at kennedy and we will take their life here on cspan. The president watched the launch live there in florida and made comments to reporters and others after the launch. Here is what he said. Tobob and doug continuing make their way into orbit. While. Wow. Mr. President , what you think . It is incredible. The technology, the power, i am so proud of the people at nasa, all of the people who worked together, public and private. When you see a sight like that, it is incredible. The power of that machine, and the danger. When hear that sound and you hear the roar, you can imagine how dangerous it is. When hear the shake, and we are far away, but you feel the shake over here, it is amazing. A beautiful sight, and a bit of a ship. They have a long way to go, but that is a very dangerous part of it, a big part of the danger, what you just witnessed. So we are very honored to be here. Yes, i spoke to elon. I speak to him all the time, great guy. He is one of our great brains. We like great brains and elon has done a fantastic job. That was a beautiful sight to see and i hope you all enjoyed it. We will be saying a few words inside so i will see you inside. Thank you. A great honor to have you here. To astronauts . K pres. Trump i did. What did you tell them . Pres. Trump god bless you. More courage, that even our congressman. Our senators, our congresspeople, would you do that . Do you know who would do it . Brian we do it. If it was legal for elon to give us a ride, we would go. [laughter] pres. Trump an amazing honor. Four years ago this place was essentially shut down. The Space Program was over and the Shuttle Program was dead. One of the secret service men said they were here with a past administration and i will not tell you who, and they were here to shutdown the facility. Now we are the leader in the world again. This is just the beginning. They are going to mars. There going to the moon. Theyre going to the moon in order to go it to mars, it is a platform. Jim, i want to congratulate you. [applause] i want to congratulate the Vice President , wonderful job. [applause] we have the governor of and congratulations to you. [applause] and you know rick, rick scott. [applause] a greatgovernor and now center and marco is here someplace. A great senator. This is a great site to see. Sight to see. I said, would you hear anything because we are a distance away. And then you hear that roar, it incredible, the power. That machine looks small from here. That it could have that kind of power or make that sound or make that vibration. That is something special. I will say a few words to inside so we will see you in a couple of minutes. Trump right after the launch this afternoon. He is expected to make additional remarks a few minutes away and we will have live coverage of that here on cspan. We will take you act live now to coverage of nasa tv. Dragon, spacex, you are go to perform manual piloting test. The test must be completed by 21 26. [beep] 4. 042 we have a go for and we will put that in and understand the testing to be completed by 21 26 zulu. Good read back. 3, 2, 1. This is Mission Control houston. Bob and doug are inside a crew dragon vehicle performing the manual flight test you can maybe see a bit on the front screens. They are manually piloting the crew dragon. Go nasa. Go spacex. Go america. It was just a year and a half ago that the president of the United States put in his state of the Union Address that we are going to launch american astronauts on american rockets from american soil. He looked at me and said you were going to make that happen. Here we are, and with the help of elon musk and the spacex team, we have delivered. Course the president s agenda is just beginning. There is so much more. He turned around and recreated a moon program. He said we are going to the moon as a purpose, we are going to get to mars as a nation. This area, this Little Agency we call nasa is excited about it. I want to tell you a quick story. My job is to introduce the Vice President of the United States, but i will do that in a second. It was about nine years ago that the Space Shuttle atlantis landed right here for the last Space Shuttle mission in the history of the u. S. 2000 pink slips went out. Over the course of the next two years, this area went from 15,000 jobs down to 7500 jobs. Devastation for the Kennedy Space center and a lot of very disgruntled nasa employees. The vision now is as bright as it has ever been. We are one step by one step accomplishing what we need to do as a nation to lead again in space, and it is not just rhetoric. The president s backing it up with his budget requests and we are getting bipartisan support in the house and the senate for this very aggressive space agenda that includes nasa, but also includes the brandnew space force, which is a great partner of us right here at the cape. Have the great honor of putoducing a person who was in a role by the president of the United States. This role has been gone for 25 years. The role of chairman as the National Space council. Said we are going to make a priority, and heres how serious i am. We are going to put the Vice President of the United States of america as the chairman of the National Space council. We will put on that counsel the secretary of defense and the secretary of state and the secretary of commerce and the secretary of transportation and the director of National Intelligence and so many others. Heres what we have done. As a nation, america is again leading in space. And we are proud. [applause] you that when the Vice President got that role of chairman of the National Space like a, he took to it duck takes to water. Meeting after meeting about how to make america preeminent in space. I have entertained phone call after phone call about this mission we accomplished here today. Is a veryresident real space enthusiast. He has been very supportive of what is now the largest budget in nasas history in nominal dollars. Here at the Kennedy Space center, we are seeing the benefits of that today. For the First Time Since 1972, we have a landing system funded to go back to the surface of the moon. Now we have contracts for that human landing system. One of those partners is spacex. Thank you for partnering with us yet again. Pleasure and my honor to introduce to you the chairman of the National Space council, the Vice President of the United States, mike pence. [applause] , hello, nasa, hello, spacex and hello americas future in space. [applause] to the governor, leader mccarthy, members of the house and senate, members of the cabinet, the joint chiefs, Jim Bridenstine, the incredible men and women of nasa and spacex, it is an honor and a joy for me to be here with the president of the United States at Kennedy Space center on the day we made history. On the day american astronauts returned to space on an american rocket from american soil for the first time in nearly 10 years. You did it. [applause] long, the american Space Program was neglected and ignored. Those days are over. Under President Trump, nasa is back and america is leading in space once again. It has been more than 50 years since our nation first set out to leave this planet and land american astronauts on the moon. Today, under this president , we begin a new mission, to return to the moon and ultimately land american astronauts on the face of mars. When the apollo rockets leapt into the skies in the 1960s, they rose above the tumbled and the clamor of their times. They were a symbol of National Strength and unity. As states across the nation take their first steps to reopen and recover from an unprecedented pandemic, and as our nation reels from the tragic death of george floyd and violent protests the past few days, i believe with all my heart that millions of americans the samel find inspiration and unity of purpose we found in those days in the 1960s. [applause] life matters, ery and there is no tolerance for racism or violence in the streets of this country. The president has made clear we will honor the memory of george floyd. Justice will be served. We will have law and order in our streets and we will heal our land. As the people of this country did so long ago, we will prove again that even in the most challenging times, americans rise above. We always move forward. We overcome every obstacle. We reach new heights, and we reach them together. [applause] in that spirit, today we begin a new era of human Space Exploration. The credit goes to dedicated men and women all across this country. To the ingenuity and hard work of the entire nasa team. America is proud of the men and women of nasa. [applause] but for the first time in our history, our astronauts have taken to the skies on a commercial rocket built by americas private sector. So join me in a vigorous round of applause for elon musk and the dedicated men and women of spacex. Job well done. [applause] welldeserved. [applause] thanks, elon. And none of this would have been possible without the personal courage and unflinching skill of two american astronauts. One of them is an activeduty colonel in the air force, he was accepted in the nasa Astronaut Court in 2000, served on other missions, the other was the first marine pilot to fly the super hornet. Hes logged hours in more than 25 aircraft. His second flight was the very last mission of the Space Shuttle from american soil in 2011. Join me in giving a webers round of applause to commander bob behnken and commander doug hurley. We are proud of our american astronauts. [applause] because of their courage, and your hard work, america is leading in space again. Of 3. 5s the culmination years of renewed leadership in space. Its a tribute to our astronauts, the ingenuity of the wingmen and women the men and women in spacex. I also want to pay tribute to the vision and leadership of a president who from the very first days of this administration was determined to revive nasa and American Leadership in human Space Exploration. Today is a tribute to the leadership of President Donald Trump. [applause] hishe president said in inaugural address, we stand at the birth of a new millennium ready to unlock the mysteries of space. That is exactly what we are doing. The president revived the National Space council after it laid dormant for 25 years. He brought together the best minds in and out of the government to revive the American Space enterprise. We reformed the National Space Traffic Management system. We streamlined regulation for the commercial use of space. In 2017, President Trump made it the policy of the u. S. To return to the moon by 2024 and ensure the next man and next woman to set foot on the moon would be american astronauts. [applause] and we are on our way. President s direction, we will not just go back to the moon. Mission artemis will take us to the moon, and there we will make the next giant leap, and we will land american astronauts on mars. [applause] again for ouring prosperity, our explorer spirit, but we are also leading for the security of the American People. As nations around the world increase their investment in space, this president also took the decisive step to ensure america remains as dominant in space as we are in land, air, and sea, when he created the first new branch of our armed forces in more than 70 years, the United States space force. [applause] so the American People can be confident after todays history making launch that we are just getting started. Under this president s leadership, with the courage of our astronauts, the ingenuity of nasa and private partners like spacex, the support of the American People and gods grace, we will never stop pushing to reach new heights, to go farther, faster, and higher than ever before. We will inspire the world as america leads humanity into the vast expanse of space for generations to come. Now it is my high honor and distinct privilege to introduce to you the man whose vision and relentless leadership brought us to this historic day, the 45th president of the u. S. , President Donald Trump. [applause] pres. Trump thank you very much. Big day. A big day. I want to thank our great vice andident for your fearless tireless commitment to fulfilling americas destiny in space. Thank you very much, great job. [applause] mikesalso grateful to wonderful wife, karen, for being here and for all she does for our country. Thank you. [applause] before going further on this iciting day, for all america, want to say a few words about the situation in minnesota. On theth of george floyd streets of minneapolis was a gr ave tragedy. It should never have happened. It has filled americans all over the country with horror, anger, and grief. Yesterday, i spoke to georges family and expressed the sorrow of our entire nation for their loss. I stand before you as a friend and ally to every american seeking justice and peace. And i stand before you in Firm Opposition to anyone exploiting this tragedy to loot, rob, attack, and menace. Healing, not hatred, justice, not chaos, are the mission at hand. [applause] the Police Officers involved in this incident have been fired from their jobs. One officer has already been arrested and charged with murder. State and federal authorities are carrying out an investigation to see what further charges may be warranted, including against, sadly, the other three. In addition, my administration has opened a civil rights investigation, and i have asked the attorney general and the Justice Department to expedite it. I understand the pain that people are feeling. We support the right of peaceful protesters, and we hear their pleas. But what we are now seeing on the streets of our cities has nothing to do with justice or with peace. The memory of george floyd is being dishonored by rioters, looters, and anarchists. The violence and vandalism is being led by antifa and other radical leftwing groups who are terrorizing the innocent, destroying jobs, hurting businesses, and burning down buildings. The main victims of this horrible situations are the citizens who live in these once lovely communities. Devastating the lifes work of good people and destroying their dreams. Right now, America Needs creation, not destruction. Cooperation, not contempt. Security, not anarchy. And there will be no anarchy. Cherished,n must be defended, and protected. The voices of lawabiding citizens must be heard and heard very loudly. Allow at and must not small group of criminals and vandals to wreck our cities and lay waste to our communities. We must defend the rights of every citizen to live without violence, prejudice, or fear. We support the overwhelming majority of Police Officers who are incredible in every way and devoted public servants. They keep our city safe, protect our communities from gangs and drugs, and risk their own lives for us every day. Fellowis more upset than Law Enforcement officers by the small handful who failed to abide by their own to serve and protect. Stop mobstration will violence, and we will stop it cold. It does not serve the interest of justice or any citizen of any for thelor, or creed government to give into anarchy, abandon police precincts, or allow communities to be burned to the ground. It wont happen. Those making excuses or justifications for violence are not helping the downtrodden, but delivering new anguish and new pain. From day one of my administration, we have made it a top priority to build up distressed communities and revitalize our crumbling inner cities. We fought hard with senator tim scott and many others to create opportunity zones, helping to draw a surge of new investment to the places in our country that need it most. We must all Work Together as a society to expand opportunity and create a future of greater dignity and promise for all of our people. Withst forge a Partnership Community leaders, local Law Enforcement, and the Faith Community to restore hope. Radical left criminals, thugs, and others all throughout our country and throughout the world will not be allowed to set communities ablaze, we wont let it happen. It harms those who have the least. And we will be protecting those who have least. The leadership of the National Guard and the department of justice are now in close communication with states and city officials in minnesota. We are coordinating our efforts with local Law Enforcement all across our nation. Neverrica, justice is achieved at the hands of an angry mob. I will not allow angry mobs to dominate. It wont happen. It is essential that we protect the crown jewel of american democracy, the rule of law, and are independent system of justice. Every citizen and every community has the right to be safe in their workplace, safe in their homes, and safe on our city streets. This is the sacred right of all americans that im totally determined to defend and will defend. My administration will always stand against the violence, mayhem, and disorder. We will stand with the family of george floyd, with the peaceful protesters, and with every lawabiding citizen who wants decency, civility, safety, and security. We are working toward a more just society, but that means building up, not tearing down. Joining hands, not hurling fists. Standing in solidarity, not surrendering to hostility. Moments ago, as we witnessed the launch of two Great American astronauts into space, we were filled with the sense of pride and unity that brings us together as americans. That same spirit which powered our astronauts to the moon has also helped lift our country to ever greater heights, justice, and opportunity throughout our history. So today as we mark a renewed commitment to americas future in space, a tremendous commitment it is, let us also commit to a Brighter Future for all of our citizens right here on earth. When americans are united, there is nothing we cannot do. From day one of my administration, we put america first. [applause] this afternoon, im delighted to be with you at Cape Canaveral in this storied home of american dairy, aspiration, and drive. This is the first big space message in 50 years. Think of that. It is an honor to be delivering it. Today as we gather in this special place to celebrate not only the launch of a new spacecraft, but also our nations bold and triumphant return to the stars, it is a special day. Moments ago, the world bore witnessed to the flight of the first new manned u. S. Spacecraft in nearly 40 years since the Space Shuttle launched in 1981, a long time ago. Im thrilled to announce the Spacex Dragon capsule has successfully reached low earth orbit and our astronauts are safe and sound. [applause] with this launch, the decades of lost years and little action artificially over. A new age of american ambition has now begun. Past leaders put the u. S. At the mercy of foreign nations to send our astronauts into orbit. Not anymore. Today, we once again prouty launch proudly launch american astronauts on american rockets, the best in the world, from right here on american soil. [applause] those of us who saw the spectacular and unforgettable lift off this afternoon watched more than an active history, we watched an act of heroism. Every time our astronauts climb aboard a rocket, which is many fuel,s of only engine and and roll across the sky, they display breathtaking valor. What colonel Douglas Hurley and did thisobert behnken afternoon was pure american genius and courage. They joined the ranks of just seven prior american astronauts who have made the perilous Maiden Voyage to test a new class of spacecraft. Behnkens of hurley and will stand in the history books alongside those of legends like alan shepard, gus grissom, john and selflessbrave astronauts will continue their advance of the cause of Human Knowledge as they proceed to the International Space station before returning to earth. We wish them god speed their journey, and as one proud nation, we salute their fearless service. Thank you. [applause] thank you. [applause] thank you. [applause] nationsnt to send our gratitude to the wives of these valiant astronauts. Both of whom are astronauts themselves. We join them in praying for our heroes safe return. Has spring, our nation endured the pain and hardship of a global pandemic. As we usher in a new era of manned spaceflight, we are reminded that america is always in the process of transcending great challenges. Our nation is blessed with limitless reserves of talent, tenacity and resolve. The same spirit of american determination that sends our people into space will conquer this disease on earth. It should have never happened. Itself, not even gravity can hold americans down or keep america back. To nasarateful administrator, Jim Bridenstine, and director of Kennedy Space center, bob cabana for welcoming us this evening. Very special. Thank you very much. Thank you. [applause] thank you, great job. [applause] great job. Come along way in 3. 5, havent we . Women incredible men and of nasa from here at Kennedy Space center to the Johnson Space center in texas, we love you, too. To nasa plum brook station in sandusky, ohio, thank you all for working so hard to make this day a reality. We have many more great days almost ready to happen. Also with us, are many members of my cabinet, including our great new dna, john ratcliffe. Thank you, john. Thank you. [applause] have, a great friend of mine, a special man, ran a great campaign, governor of florida, ron desantis. Thank you, ron. [applause] your senators, rick scott and marco rubio. Thank you very much. [applause] thank you. [applause] leader kevin mccarthy. Kevin, thank you very much. Great job you do, kevin. [applause] and representatives, matt gates, john rutherford, michael waltz, bill posey, gus bilirakis, daniel webster, brian mast, elise stefanik, bill ryans, brian babb and, davis, Roger Marshall and stephen plaza. Thank you very much. What a great group of people. [applause] they are warriors. They help so much get this done and so many other things. Also is our air force, chief of staff, general david goldstein. Thank you very much. [applause] thank you. Thank you, general. Thank you. And chief of space operations, the first ever named, and now, a member of the joint chiefs of thef because we created United States s. Force. In senior members also of our great United States military. It has never been stronger than it is right now. Also, attorney general of florida, ashley moody and chief Financial Officer of florida, jimmy petronas, and many other distinguished guests. Thank you very much for being here. We appreciate it. [applause] i especially want to congratulate someone who truly embodies the american ethos of big thinking and risktaking. After achieving success as an internet entrepreneur, he could have spent his fortune doing anything including yachting. Lots of things. But in 2002, he began pouring tens of millions of dollars of his own money into research and development for a new rocket. He is a little different than a lot of people. He liked rockets. He assembled a crew of some of the greatest minds and talents in american aerospace. Spacex hass since, become the first private company to develop and successfully launch its own rocket into orbit. The first to launch and recover capsule. And moments ago, spacex became the first private company to put humans into orbit around the earth. Elon musk, congratulations. Congratulations, elon. [applause] [cheering] thanks, elon. Spacexand 8000 employees, today is the fulfillment of a green on stream almost two decades in the making. For years on end, they have worked handinhand with nasa, sculpting aluminum, tightening nozzles, testing parachutes and filling massive tanks with thousands and thousands of pounds of kerosene and liquid oxygen. Today, the groundbreaking partnership between nasa and spacex has given our nation the gift of an unmatched power. A stateoftheart spaceship to put our astronauts into orbit at a fraction of the cost of the Space Shuttle. And it is much better. From now on, the United States will leverage the fastgrowing capabilities of our commercial sector. And the finest pieces of real estate on earth, which you need very badly, to send u. S. Astronauts into space. Under nasas commercial crew program, we will use rockets and spacecraft designed, built, owned and launched by private American Companies at a fixed price for the american taxpayer. Clear theunch makes commercial space industry is the future. The modern world was built by fierceers and renegades, competitors, skilled craftsmen, captains of industry thats what no one else saw and envisioned what no one else could ever think of seeing. The United States will harness the arrival, creativity and toed of our private sector stride even further into the unknown. This launch also marks an exciting turning point for nasa. This agency will now focus its unmatched expertise like nobody has ever seen. To dower and integrity what nasa does better than anyone else. And it is not even close. Embarq on the most difficult, most daring, most audacious missions in the history of humankind. When i first came into office 3. 5 years ago, nasa had lost its energyd the excitement, and ambition as almost everybody in this room knows, was gone. Throughs grass growing the cracks of your concrete runways. Not a pretty sight. Not a pretty sight at all. The last administration presided over the closing of the Space Shuttle. Almost all of the giant facilities that keeps so many people working, so many Brilliant Minds going, people were crying, they were devastated. But now, it is the greatest of its kind anywhere in the world and will get greater and greater with years to come. I promise you that. [applause] we have created the envy of the world and will soon be landing on mars. We will soon have the greatest weapons ever imagined in history. I have already seen designs. Even i cant believe it. Regainedd states has our place of prestige as the world leader. As has often been stated, you cant be number one on earth if you are number two in space. [applause] we are not going to be number two anywhere. [applause] nowhere is this more true than with our military which we have. Ompletely rebuilt under my administration, we have invested 2. 5 trillion in new submarines,s, tanks, missiles, rockets. Anything you can think of. Last year, i signed a law creating the six branch of that already very famous United States armed forces, the space force. [applause] for every citizen who has eagerly waited for america to reignite those engines of will, confidence and imagination that put a man on the moon, i stand waite you to say you need no longer. Artemis program, the United States is preparing for a crude mission to mars crewed mission to mars. Earlier this week, i saw the orion capsules being worked on in this building as part of the artemis moon to mars program. Those capsules will soon return americans to lunar orbit for the years. Ime in over 50 half a century. By 2024, our astronauts will return to the lunar surface to establish a permanent presence. And the launching pad to mars. [applause] and the first woman on the moon will be an american woman. The first nation to land on mars will be the United States of america. [applause] since i signed the order to establish these goals, shortly after taking office, we have made rapid gains. A new 22,000 pound capsule is already built. The next generation of spacesuits are already made. Colossal rockets are now being tested. The contracts for three separate lunar landings have been awarded and signed. They are magnificent. Ahead, america will go bigger, bolder, further, faster. And america will go first. America will always be first. [applause] to be certain, we will meet the adversity and hardship along the way. They may even be tragedy because that is the danger of space. There is nothing we can do about that. Talkingr that we are about is unrivaled. There is nothing we can do. About problems. We will have very few of them. We will confront all of those challenges knowing that the quest for understanding is the oldest and deepest hope in our souls. The innate human desire to explore and innovate is what propels the engines of progress and the march of civilization. Persevere. Serve and ofwill ensure a future american dominance in space. To that end, over the last three years, i reestablished the National Space council. Cutting redirective tape for Innovative Space Companies such as spacex. Worlds First Comprehensive space Traffic Management system. Last month, i signed an executive order establishing u. S. Policy for the recovery and use of space resources and minerals. Steinstrator braden announced the artemis course to govern the future of Space Exploration and development. Together, we will assert americas rightful heritage as the greatest spacefaring nation already, itt, and is not even close. In the half a century since the United States stopped spending ,stronauts to deep into space 1972, no other country has ever done it. The reasons are simple. Complexityological and tremendous danger. For instance, i was told that the rocket you just witnessed had to be launched within one second or it would be impossible for it to hit its target. I was here two days ago. I said to jim, jim, it is ok. Why dont you wait five or 10 minutes . [laughter] have a sir, we only window of one second. I walked out of here shaking my head. Is that true, jim . Yes, its true. Space travel is not a feat of engineering alone. It is also a moral endeavor, a , itsre of a nations vision willpower, its place in the world. Exploration is a test of our values and of our faith. America is a nation defined by its commitment to discovery. To solve mysteries, to chart the unknown, to press the limits, to achieve the fullest expression of lifes potential. And to ensure that america is the nation that always leads the way. Especially in space. This evening, i am more confident than ever before that america stands poised to thrive in this grand undertaking. It is incredible. Pioneers. Ation of we are the people who cross the , carved out a foothold on a vast continent, settled a great wilderness and then set our eyes upon the stars. This is our history and this is our destiny. Now, like our ancestors before us, we are venturing out to explore a new magnificent frontier. It is called space. Feats, our most epic journeys, our biggest adventures and our finest days are just beginning. Americas proudest moments are still ahead. We are on the verge of our most exciting years. Next year may be the most exciting of all. You just watch. Today, as our brave american shape the shake earth and blaze fire and steel into the heavens, we proclaim for all to hear that we have not yet tested the full strength of the american character. The world has not yet seen the full glory of the american spirit. For our country, for our children and for humanitys march into the stars, the best is yet to come. [applause] it was a great honor for me to deliver this speech. God bless our great brave after mott now brave astronauts now soaring through the heavens. God bless the men and women of nasa. And god bless america. Thank you very much. [applause] dragon spacex for next steps media event and dragon flickering. Dragon spacex for next steps. Go ahead. I was wondering if you had had a chance to get the floater media camera and prepped for the media event . No, we havent yet, but we can certainly put that to work if you guys want us to. Grab thatf you could and put that into somewhere that space we interference would like to do that in the next pass. Ok. Going to grab it right this second. Great. The next pass is in less than five minutes, so that would be perfect. In addition, i have words for geryon the thermal ima flickering you saw if you are ready for that. Go ahead. This is a nominal feature of the camera. The camera is doing a self correction meaning the camera has not yet reached thermal equilibrium. After power on, it takes about an hour after the cameras turned on to reset thermal equilibrium. From power on, you can expect the thermal imager to flicker every once in a while for the thermal equilibrium. Ok. That all sounds good. Ready, the media event pdf, i would like to talk to you about which steps you want to complete on the media event timeline. Ok. Let us pull it up. Doug, just want to make sure this is on a noninterfering if you want to delay talking about this, we can if you want to finish your meal. Give us a couple of minutes and we will call you back. That sounds great, thanks. The camera is out and set up, so if you guys want to do the station check out, it should be ready to go. Ok, copy. For the set up, we are going to be changing some of the lighting configurations. So that is us from the ground. Copy. This is Mission Control houston. You are looking at the inside of the Flight Control room. This is one of three will be using today. Winding down from today after overseeing some of the prelaunch and launch activities and some of the initial burns of the dragon on its way to the International Space station. We will be conducting an overhand shortly. That is one of the control rooms we will be using. It will be flight director Rebecca Wingfield over there leading the teams on some of the overnight shift while bob and doug are asleep. Thes cassidy aboard International Space station already entering his sleep period before waking up and beginning to prep the International Space station for the arrival of bobby and doug. A lot of that work already completed from some of the prework done even for the first 27,ch attempt on may checking out some of the monitoring tools and Communications Hardware that needs to be used and checked out prior to the launch of bob and doug. A lot of that work done today, saturday. The main task of Chris Cassidy was cleaning the space station. And he has the rooms prepped for bob and doug upon their arrival. We are now entering into a media event. We will be able to see some views from inside the dragon. Bobby and doug aboard the dragon vehicle just finishing up their meal. They are shifting a little bit from what Chris Cassidy has experience, but they will be all synced up when they arrive at just about 9 30 a. M. Central time tomorrow. Again, teams here winding down. Teamlight director orbit 2 will be handed over shortly to Rebecca Wingfield over in the bluefly control room. Itil then, we will taloss back over to hawthorne to take us through the media event coming up shortly. Thanks for that update from houston, gary. We are very much looking forward to getting our first glimpse inside the capsule from the perspective of. We have had a perspective of bob and doug. We have had a spectacular day given the fact that we were once again iffy on the weather again iffy on the weather. Just seeing the blue sky come out in force upon left off was quite a sight. Real quick, i will check the clock. We have just passed the t plus [no audio] i think we just lost your audio, kate. Canwill make sure she c can keep saying it in a few minutes. The falcon nine delivering bob and doug to their initial orbit. We havent been tracking any issues with dragon since they arrived in outer space. Ofhave already completed two our burns so far, two of five that are going to be responsible for getting us to the International Space station. We did the phase burn a few hours ago. 1 16 pm over up at here on the west coast. Bob and doug did a manual flight test. At the controls of dragon for the very first time and they were able to control that test subjectively putting into a special orientation known as ,ocal vertical local horizontal literally using the earth itself as a guide to position themselves as they were flying. Also able to do that boost burn successfully. That wrapped up just about 20 minutes ago. Another two point five minute firing of the draco thrusters, the second of five burns to get us to the International Space station. Right now, at this moment, the crew is still on board dragon. They are at the latter part of their day. It has been a pretty long day for bobby and doug so far. At this moment, they are just wrapping up their meal. Rewis the first meal via c on board dragon. We will see if they let us in on what they were eating when we get inside with them in the cabin in just a little while. The next major milestone coming up going to be the close coil lift it burn. This is just a little bit more circulars our orbit. We are going to be a constant 10 kilometers lower than the International Space station. That is coming up in just under 21 minutes from now. Assuming that burn gets done successfully, we will be three of five in the bag and well on our way to the International Space station. And then, we should get a chance to check in with bob and doug on board. Just really pleased with the Mission Progress thus far. Like we have said before, launched today, that is not where it ended. Bob and doug are en route to the International Space station, but even once they hop on board the space station, it is still not done. We have got to get them back home. Just as a reminder, while it will be a very long initial day of the mission, it certainly is not the conclusion. Just something to keep in mind. We will be staying live here with you on air bringing you updates throughout bob and dougs journey to the International Space station over the next we probably have another 15 hours left at this point. 15. 5 hours or so. Really exciting day. Even still, the energy in the building here at spacex headquarters is very much electric. Given the success of the day so far, Mission Control is right next to me to my left. We just had a shift change among the dragon operators. We are still going strong. I know gary walked us through. They are also doing a shift change over at Mission Control houston. You have teams working aroundtheclock in houston and aroundtheclock now for this flight uphill for dragon. Just some of the voices you are going to be hearing throughout jaylaunch, jayaram ha was the cap corn here. Hawthorne that was talking to bob and doug. He has since handed over to laura crabtree, who is now on console there right behind us in the Mission Control center here in hawthorne. Going to be talking bobby and doug through the last couple of hours of their day before they get ready to go to sleep. Eight hours timeline for them and they will wake up tomorrow morning. By that point, we will be wrapping up the fifth and final burn before we get into what we call the approach initiation. The really close maneuvers in toward station. By that point, they will only be a few kilometers below and seven kilometers behind. They will execute a burn that is going to bring them really close to the space station. By that point, we will also be getting views from the space station which we will be looking forward to. There is a view on your right hand side screen that is Mission Control here in hawthorne, california. I believe on the left, that is our core, laura crabtree. She would be the person that is communicating back and forth with bobby and doug, walking them and confirming procedure points. It has been a wonderful day. Getting back to the next event that we have coming up in exactly 20 minutes or there about. Exactly almost. 17. 5 minutes. We are going to get to the close coalition to burn, her. Or close burn. That will place dragon on an oliptic withy co the space station. There are 16 different maneuvers to use. Forward thrusters are primarily used for the bigger delta philosophy maneuvers like we would be executing here with the close burn. The 12 Service Section dracos dragon space and are used for attitude and low impulse translational control. A mix of these have been used for each of the burns. We have redundancy ills into dragon if we run into built into dragon if we run into any issues with thrusters during the mission. We should be coming up to the burn and about 16 minutes. When we get there, it is going to be a fairly long one. It will be about a 10 minute firing of the thrusters. Once it starts, we will just continue to hear we should get some check ins from the court to the crew as it is going to update them. Of course, at the very end, we are looking out for those words, good burn. That is what we want to hear. They are continually adjusting the timings of these burns based on how much dragons velocity changes on the way uphill. We have pretty specific times down to the second where they are initially planned even days or even weeks out sometimes before they launch. Readjustingstantly in real time just how long these burns are going to occur and how long or when they are actually going to happen. This is just part of the nature of orbital mechanics. We are trying to hit one speeding bullet with another one as dragon continues to raise its orbit over the next several hours. Dragon spacex for a close burn. Go ahead. We are just about 15 minutes out from the. A Team Transition approximately four minutes into the burn from landing tank to orbit tank. Initially, there will be a cabin fan swap during the burn or just after the burn. Spacex is go for the. For the close burn. Go for the close burn. That backandforth that we just heard between crew dragon and core here in hawthorne was basically saying that we are go coolliptice close burn which is going to be raising dragons orbit. Coming up in just under 14 minutes. You will hear them get a lot of details in these calls. For this crew in particular, we know they have asked for every little tidbit about dragon to beyond their displays or radioed up to them. Literally, where they were being told were some of the different tanks that are feeding these thrusters, they told him they are going to have a cabin changeover, that is something that would be pretty audible. Inside crew dragon, there is a lot of ambient noise so they are able to hear things like the cabin fan which is constantly moving the atmosphere inside because you dont have natural convection in microgravity. Hot air doesnt rise, so you have to actively be moving the atmosphere the entire time. These crew members are trained to expect to hear different sounds, different sites when they are going through these different maneuvers. They like to get those kind of updates from the core and the teams down here on the ground so they are not caught off guard for anything. Exactly. Like we said, this will be the third of five major burns that dragon will be performing. It is the last burn that will be occurring before bob and doug go to sleep. They have already had their meal. They will hopefully be giving us a little tour of crew dragon here in the next several minutes. And then, they will have a quick medical evaluation with their flight surgeons, and then they get the ok to take an eight hour long nap. We are watching live coverage, nasas simulcast coverage on cspan. We are expecting to hear from the nasa administrator within the half hour or so. We will bring that to you live here on cspan when that happens. We have also heard today from President Trump, who is on his way back to washington now on air force one. Washington, d. C. , one of a number of cities across the country experiencing civil unrest and some violence in the streets following the death of george floyd in minneapolis earlier this week. At the Justice Department today, attorney general william barr made a brief statement on the violence taking place in the cities across the country, saying that outside groups are behind the writing. Rioting. Good afternoon. Nationatness of our comes from our commitment to the rule of law. About National Community what happened to george floyd in minneapolis israel and legitimate is real and legitimate. Accountability for his death must be addressed and is being addressed through the regular process of our criminal Justice System both at the state and at the federal level. And system is working moving at exceptional speed. Already, initial charges have been filed by the state. That process continues to move forward. And justice will be served. Unfortunately, with the rioting that is occurring in many of our cities around the country, the voices of peaceful protests are being hijacked by violent radical elements. Groups of outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate and violent agendas. In many places, it appears the violence is planned, organized and leftn by anarchic extremist groups, far left extremist groups using antifa like tactics, many of whom traveled from outside the state to promote the violence. We must have law and order on our streets and in our communities. It is the responsibility of the local and state leadership in the first instance to halt this violence. The department of justice, including the fbi, u. S. Andhals, the atf, the dea, our 93 United States attorneys , arees around the country efforts,g these local will continue to support them and take all action necessary to enforce federal law. In that regard, it is a federal lines or toss state use interstate facilities to incite or participate in violent rioting. We will enforce those laws, thank you. And also, a briefing today was acting department of Homeland Security secretary, trent wolf and other dhs officials concerning their ment ins involve policing protests after the killing of george floyd. They said they are investigating radical groups involvement in the riots. Guys, come on down. Good afternoon. Thank everyone for being here today. Let me recognize a few folks that i have behind me. Acting deputy secretary ken cuccinelli, acting ice director, matt albans, United States secret Service Director murray, and debbie director klein. Thank you all for being here. The department of Homeland Securitys highest priority is to ensure the safety and security of the American People in the departments workforce. We have witnessed an outright assault on our Law Enforcement community. Last night in oakland, california, and assassin cowardly shot two federal protective Service Contractors as they stood watch over protest. One officer was killed and the other is in critical condition. Police, the oakland supported the by the department of Homeland Security, are investigating that intact. Attack. Let me express my deepest condolences to the family members of these two contractors. Any loss in the dhs family us. Cts all of i want the loved ones of these brave officers to know that you have the support of the department behind you. Men, last night, the brave and women of the United States secret service were assaulted by criminals. They threw rocks, they threw urine and alcohol at our officers. In several instances, our officers incurred injuries to include broken bones. These protesters committed these acts of violence while hiding behind their First Amendment right of lawful protest. Finally, earlier this week, and ice facility was attacked by a criminal who threw a molotov cocktail in an attempt to burn down the facility. A facility that houses the men and women who have taken a solemn oath to protect this country. While these incidents are under investigation, the department of Homeland Security will not rest until these criminals are brought to justice. As the nations largest Law Enforcement organization, the departments top priority is protecting the American People in our workforce. I want to ensure the american assure the American People that dhs officers will continue to fulfill the solemn duty regardless of the violence they face. Dhs and its lawenforcement components are taking a number of proactive steps in response to the unfortunate events that have taken place over the last 24 hours. Those include federal protective service has taken an enhanced posture in a number of cities and localities throughout the country. United States Secret Service is evolving and adapting to the changing nature of the threats they face. Ice are supporting local partners on the ground with surveillance and other capabilities. These measures will help our personnel stay safe as they continue to protect us from those who spread this violence. Our nation is at its strongest when we confront challenges together and resist the voices that try to divide us. Our Law Enforcement officers put their health, safety on the line in order to protect the american public. Leo them and their families not only our respect we owe them and their families not only our respect, but a debt of gratitude. I ask acting deputy secretary cuccinelli to say a few words. Thank you for being here. I would also like to express my havelences to those who been killed unless mines ask the violence. In acts of senseless violence. As a former state attorney general , i know i have been totoo many of these funerals. The department of Homeland Security is nearly two decades of experience responding to some of the most challenging threats our nation has ever faced. We will continue to meet any challenge head on as we fulfill our duty to protect the American People and our Law Enforcement personnel. Stands ready to protect the American People and our employees during this difficult time using every legal means at our disposal. We stand firmly behind our Law Enforcement officers and the state and local Law Enforcement officers that form some of the most valuable partnerships with which we work every single day. All across america to keep you safe. There are currently threats by some to attack Police Stations and federal buildings. That violence not only wont be tolerated, we are also committed to ensuring that it wont succeed anywhere. Anywhere. Clear, when someone targets a Police Officer or a Police Station with an intention to do harm and intimidate, that is an act of domestic terrorism. Fighting terrorism was the very reason for the founding of the department of Homeland Security. We will standier, behind our Law Enforcement officers here in the department and all over america as they put themselves on the line to protect each and every one of you. Thank you very much. We will take a few questions if there are some. Are there any suspects in custody at that t this time . Dhs is supporting our federal and local Law Enforcement partners in any and all investigations across the country. I will defer that to fbi, doj and others on that investigation. It is too early to comment, but just know that whether it is ice Homeland Security investigators or other secret service and others throughout the department, we are heavily involved in those investigations. We are partners not only with the bureau, but with other of our local Law Enforcement agencies. We will continue to support them in those investigations. Reporter are you seeing an increase in the white nationalists or white supremacist organizations and any chatter on those websites trying to infiltrate these groups, maybe . Again, i would say it is very early in these investigations. We are interested in any and all groups that are taking advantage of what could be a peaceful protest and turning that into something that is very different. That is what we are seeing across the country. We saw that last night. Again, we are interested in all groups, all violent groups, all extremist groups that are taking advantage of individuals exercising their First Amendment right to do the peaceful protest and turning it into something else. We are seeing a pattern of that and we are very concerned about that. Do you have any reason to believe that the shooting of these officers was racially motivated in any way . No. Again, i would say the investigation is ongoing. I would just note that we had to fbs officers shot as they were responding to a protest in oakland. Officers shot. Again, whether it was racially motivated or whatever it ends up being at the end of the day, the investigation will demonstrate that and that continues. It is very early on in that investigation. Let me have fbs also talked. The individual shot last protectivecontracted Security Officers that we contract with two protect our federal sub facilities. This is the third one in the last few years that has been shot and killed in on duty. One in maryland, the same year in new york city and this is our third. They are definitely a front line of defense in our federal facilities. Thank you all for doing this press conference. Secretary, could you speak anymore to any of the specific groups you are interested in, looking into and more broadly, about what it is specifically, the work you are doing to look into extremist groups . Sure. Again, as i have been indicated, the investigation is very early on. We have seen reports out there that a number of groups are involved in these, whether it is antifa or others. We are going to continue to look at that and continue to pull this string. What we are concerned about is these groups taking advantage of a peaceful protest. What we are seeing is organization to these groups. We are seeing different tactics of these groups. Things you would not see during a peaceful protest, we are seeing Different Things and that is concerning to us as the weekend unfolds. Again, we have our Law Enforcement officers on the frontline of this. We have an enhanced posture. We are searching resources across the country and we are ready for what is going to happen. Reporter what evidence do you have that it is groups like antifa versus other i have just said, we have seen reporting that it is these different groups. As i indicated im not going to guess what these groups are. We are going to continue to look at the facts. We see reporting out there like other individuals do as well. I have seen that. We are looking into that and we will continue to do that not only with the a department of justice but with the fbi and others. This is for the secret Service Director. Do you have any comment on the situation outside the white house last night and maybe if there is going to be an increased posture given the situation last night as the weekend and the week progresses . Sure. First, i wanted to commend the men and women of the secret service for the high degree of professionalism they showed an compassion and concern for not only demonstrators, but people that meant to do them harm. Also very grateful for the partnership of u. S. Park police and metropolitan Police Department that were there supporting us as well. Our protective methodology is scalable. It is never a question of readiness for us. We are always ready, but we try to capitalize on Lessons Learned and deploy the appropriate measures. We will do that and incorporate them and ensure we do our best to provide a safe and secure environment for everybody who comes out to exercise their First Amendment rights. Thanks again for everyone coming out. [singing] the Spacex Dragon crew lifted all caps on the Kennedy Space center three hours and five minutes ago. We will take you back to live coverage.
