Long its been, and how many people you guys start out with. So basically we opened the shelter on august 26, a day or two after the hurricane happened. When we opened the shelter here, the grp, we had over 10,000 residents staying here. Now we are moving into another shelter. The population has decreased over time as people find new accommodations. So right now we had, two days ago, a little less of around a thousand people. What we find new shelter. Where moving to the Houston Committee college warehouse, and thats the 1000 people you have where moving them to. Today so right now we only have half of those people around 400 people yesterday. We started the move and were able to move roughly half of the residence certainly will have around 400, and we have buses that we can take them to the new shelter. Obviously, their stuff goes with them. So we have two buses come to buses for their belongings, and the last bus is buses for the rest of them to accompany their belongings. So their belongings are always within and we also have pets. So the pets at these shelters that were staying at the shelter but with the residence. But at the new shelter they are going to be with the resident but in a separate area. Theres two sections. Go ahead and walk us through this section that we are currently in right now. Kind to tell us what was going on here. So as you can see, more or less, this is where we provide residents with cots here if you can see the cots, we are roughing the muppet we provide them with two red cross blankets. We give them three news the day, two of them warm, breakfast gold, serial and things like that. But for lunch and dinner we serve warm meals it would also provide them with medical services for the pets we also have a group of veterans vacation the pets were okay. And so, between ms. We will provide them stacks. We just want to make sure that people uncomfortable. That people have suffered so much, many have lost their home or their homes have been really flooded by the hurricane. So we just want to make sure that you they find a place whee they can relax, where they can figure out the next moves as things happen. This room has obviously cleared out a little bit already. Already. From here they move on over to the bus shelter . Yeah here so what happens is that its organized, weve been doing it through phases. So yesterday we had, echoes by hall. It goes through by hall. We make sure people get on the buses. It goes by sections. Ive easily when moved in we have to make sure, we cannot move them without their stuff. We do it by sections on every hall and then we finish with every hall. You of his gilbert of health. You obviously get a little bit of help. We roughly 3000 workers around the houston area helping with the efforts. Right now we have around 3060 volunteers helping moving the residence to the new shelter. We also have the help of the texas guard and the Houston Police department. And also fema was here and other services for people that are needed for their wellbeing. There are a lot of cots heres to. Will these be moved to the new shelter . No. We provide them with new cots. Going to give them new cots if we both did the new blankets. Everything that is going to be at the new shelter is going to be new stuff, new articles, right. We also provide them with like shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, everything will be given again is brandnew articles of hygiene. This is the last day this will be open. A big challenge come right . Right. The the red cross will make sure were going to leave this shelter, i mean, the Convention Center as we found it. But then obviously the grb crews will take it over and i think they are going to have a few conventions coming up very soon. We are going to the best to keep it, to find this Convention Center away without it and take all of our stuff out. And you were telling me about criteria for staying here. Tell us about the red cross mission, the criteria to stay at a shelter. Basically the residence that were already here are transported to the new shelter. We dont really ask for come when people come to shelters, the red cross is a nonprofit. We are a humanitarian organization so we dont ask, when people first come to the shelters we dont ask for their ethical background of whether they are residence or whether company, united states, whether they have a green card or their citizens. We take anyone regardless of immigration status, whatever theyre coming from. We dont ask for that. Most of the people in the shelters i would say they have been affected by the hurricane. How long will the new shelter stay open . The new shelter, the Houston Committee college warehouse will be open as long as we are needed until people find, the idea of the shield is that we as a said before, we give our residents the time to relax, to be called and to start for them thinking about their permanent recommendation. Will there be the same amount of services that was provided here over the . That is correct. The thing about the services. We will give them new cots and blankets, new hygiene kits. Like i say they have like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap. We also provide Laundry Service for people to launder their clothing. Also showers. We have three trucks with fixed showers each so one is for females, another one is for males and we also have a handicap truck that serves as a shower. You guys have received a lot of donations for Hurricane Harvey. How much of that funding or that money goes toward running the shelters . Right. So basically of the 300 million the red cross has received for Hurricane Harvey is going, all the money is going to be back into the community. So were going to keep all that money for the hurricane, for the relief effort. So 90 cents, . 91 of every of every dollar received is going to go back to provide this kind of services, and the other is for us to move our volunteers, as i said, we have 3100 workers and volunteers around texas. We have 190 emergency vehicles around the affected areas providing food and hygienic, also to provide meals and all the kind of thing. 91 cents of every dollar of the 300 million is going to go back to provide all the services, and the rest, the other nine cents are going to go for logistics and management and things like that. I distance there was a limit of a computer glitch with people applying for assistance through the red cross. How are you rectify that, and can people who live in the shelters apply for that. Is yes. Thanks for asking that question. The red cross has an immediate Financial Assistance program. The program started in septembe. We had over 100,000 families apply within the time of 20 hours. So we were able to distribute 45 million, but the system crashed and was not able to take so many people, you know, that were going to us for assistance. The system crashed but its going to be up and running again on september 21 come which is going to be next thursday. Families will receive 400 per household. All they have to do is come on september 21 go to the website which is redcross. Org hh i a ad all they have to do is put their name, their email, phone number and address. The address has to be obviously an address that matches one of the 39 counties that were affected by Hurricane Harvey and that is basically it. They dont have to ship any kind of id. What happens is once they are confirmed and into the program, they did a code and with that code they can go to different outlets. One, they can get a money grab. Fasten they can get the money, paypal, and also they can go to walmart with that code and they can get the money in cash. You will have people can apply it shelter . No. We dont really offer computers. What we as people is to do either on their phones or if they have computer, if they dont have access to a computer or a phone that connects to the internet, they can also call our 1800 number which is 1800 red cross. But yesterday to give an example of a lady called and said i want access to that, i dont have a phone that i can access the internet, what can i do . Shes going to go to the library. Or you can for a computer from a friend or as i said people having problems or the driving way to access the internet they can call four 1800redcross and will be able to assist him with the process. With two major hurricanes hitting the u. S. , have you guys been challenged anyway to move employees or volunteers . Thats always a challenge. We had harvey and then we have irma and we have jose so theres a lot of hurricanes happening at the same thing. The red cross workers, its always a logistical problem. Its a lot of pieces that need to be moved. We have, we deploy volunteers from all different areas of the country like myself, im from los angeles that we have people from new york, iowa, from washington state, basic all of the country coming here to help with the red cross. Its a logistical, you know, a way to organize everybody so we are very organized. Nothing is perfect but we try to make sure the most important thing is to make sure the clients here are residence, safe, so they should have all the volunteers that they can have further assistance. After its all said and done and the recovery is moving along, what is the red cross our main goal is to make sure these people go back to the lives as they were before. So thats a manco. Right now were just starting the process. It has been even a month since hurricane happened so our First Priority is to make sure those people are okay, that they find a safe place to stay, that they of comfort. And then now that were moving to a new shelter, to try to help them to see, to give them the time to find permanent accommodations and thats what we giving those 400. Its an immediate help. Its the money they get right away. So that can help them with whatever incidentals they may have while you work with your insurance and with the family members or friends for them to find additional accommodations. Permanent accommodations, thats our goal. President trump said today the u. S. Would be imposing additional sanctions on north korea. The question of our with exceptional but theres also just bigger question is why had he never thought this was a form of propaganda that why had i not thought to question where was this concept coming from and what was the job that it was doing for individual americans. I think one thing i was realizing that this took a long time to realize in fact, is a very language we use when we talked about Foreign Countries has been kind of determined for us a very long time ago because we tended to look at muslim countries and especially countries in the east as with a catching up with us or with a behind us . What that does is that prevent you from being able to see the country on its own terms. Watch after words sunday night at 9 p. M. Eastern on cspan2s booktv.
