I am glad to say a the first fellow and it is my pleasure but first day few important details silence your cell phones. We are filling this even to your face or voice may be live on the air and finally joined us afterwards for very busy conversation. Gathering together tonight is this fitting that the publisher has a ph. D. From the class of 89 is here tonight to help kick off. Amy became director july 2015 with a prior history at the press as executive editor as well as low as the broader publishing world for cry could share details but instead trust me she knows a good book when she sees one and we have one here to talk about perot trying to balance print and digital strategys to skean and preserved and libraries to access those books that were not available previously and then also with a shiny new storefront i am sure she hopes to see you there in the near future. While she will properly introduce our speaker i cannot not offer a very warm m. I. T. Welcome to president joseph aoun. [applause] we are proud to have you here with us this evening in their eager to hear your perspective. Robot proof i is known for intellect to fix things or make them better. Your leadership with this book shows the distinctive capabilities of the human mind even with the ascendancy of robots shows eight m. I. T. Training and appreciate your presence here tonight. [applause] i am delighted to be here. Publishing those most prominent authors to art and architecture including Higher Education and a linguistics. To imagine what that University Presses can and should be and the spirit is alive and well and his book robot proof Higher Education in the age of artifical intelligence challenging traditional models of university in the age where rote learning and memory is everythings the purpose of Higher Education for robot proved education trains creators but as someone who reads a lot of books and proposals levy said at was impressed then only with the content but with its many beautifully crafted sentences. I mentioned to a friend that i had the honor of introducing that i couldnt understand how they can bring themselves to choose of the associate editor. [laughter] there is no accounting for taste for pro but perhaps that is where they went wrong for pro just as he earned his ph. D. In n linguistics and then teaching and then after m. I. T. To join the faculty of the college of arts and sciences Northeastern University now in the 12th year to distinguish himself as an expert on Experiential Education that Signature Program with Work Opportunities around the world to share these successes of the coop program in the book to work and study and conduct research and in 2011 honoring m. I. T. Graduates for specific achievements. And announced just today when a 7n University President s for that Leadership Award of 500,000 which is quite remarkable to take this award even further as a matching grant. And then we will start the conversation for those work san question and then have the audience joined in the discussion as well. As a science and business journalist the first please join me in welcoming from Northeastern University. [applause] it is good to be back at my a, a matter. So she is very of biased so i will tell you about the book is essentially something that you all though that displaces us on many levels many jobs are becoming obsolete and have shown that over the next 20 years 50 percent is the equality that we know will increase even further. That the same time looking at the marketplace asking yourselves what are you looking for . For that creative pattern that could be global in a systematic way in this is something that is needed is something that everybody wants to have what society is asking for in order to make people robot proved. So with what i am presenting how it can change to make people robot proved one, think of curriculum and integrate experiential learning and third used Lifelong Learning proposal led mr. By the curriculum. I am calling for the curriculum based on the humanities witches of mastery they are the tax literacy understanding how they work in how they interact with these machines and the understanding the amount of information and how we can navigate disinformation and beyond top of that may in the the focus that the machines would have the difficulty to duplicate. Zero entreprenuership. And to interact with people and the ability to be culturally agile and global and the ability to function. How do we achieve that . We dont teach entreprenuership we have to practice that and that is the second component. That is essentially the integration but i believe the most powerful form is based on though work practice these low term internships to refine in the classroom. Have to understand how to work with other people and then to be a leader and a creator. That is the of politics and they see that happening on a daily basis. With Lifelong Learning and also getting smarter. Your jobs will disappear and new jobs will be created. Were going to be obsolete Lifelong Learning is a necessity. And also to be viewed as a secondclass operation it has to be a part of the core mission. That in order to remain robot proved. And isnt easy to integrate Lifelong Learning because it will be best better read the sole owners of the curriculum . And so the notion of delivery they dont have the time or the ability. The university has to go to the of burgers. Of though learners. To go through credentials. We need to meet these challenges society is changing and i believe Higher Education has that responsibility to make every lerner robot proved. [applause] im the editor of Technology Review it is a great honor to participate in this conversation with you. I have to say this book is terrific if people have not read it they should. It provides a Historical Context why robots are changing jobs and how those in the past have changed jobs and it is a nice discussion worth having but then it provides a strong argument to know people adapt to these changes. I will ask questions then have a discussion. So when did you start thinking about robots horror a. I. Why education might change in then how did your thinking change . There is work that has been done is called the second machine age and they were called into action. And a. I. Is going into society to work. But that was not one of the turning points. So in Higher Education we want to educate our students. Ha so where this is bin that core mission of the institution. And from that second machine age. In then i was writing the book that this happens that this was remote now suddenly jobs are disappearing. Also many politicians that said this is not the problem and we need to regulate that. For those things that started with a lot of discussions happening in society. So both that pace and development of technology has been much faster in with those policy makers absolutely pro but if you mention them look across europe is much more sensitive and rory about that. It is happening at the government level for them to say this is not the issue but the u. K. Now looks at the possibilities to put a small fraction per barrel with those workers or executives and those future employees . I was struck at one point with those powerful skills is creativity. That is still that advantage person has a 18q me that in a very general and abroad since to expand why it gives them the advantage over robots . And the entreprenuers is the creator. Looking at the opportunity in now to launch a notforprofit is a creator and working in these various industries. Then sold by a definition . With is everything that we do the way we look at the world. So this is the upper view of human beings. So to see the next new opportunity so that is why they should focus on these big aspects of human beings. With a. I. And robot very few things would get more powerful than what you out line with the creativity for the foreseeable future. And the ability to locate in the eye. So that injured bill to bail and then to be led bayou. In that fundamental. This is something that we need to continue. So something to mask and with that skill gap but then many do not believe that is true. It is a complex issue but your take on the skill gap how we address that . And how people are prepared to make sure theyre treating people for the right skills skills . Certainly what is needed in society now the Business Education forum did that. So for instance we need any type of security and a big data. So with that youre miss demand eagerness enormous demand. You can have various other aspects but ask me how we can am looking into that. But their options i. M. Discussing in my book. Those are the undergraduates those who are long on experience or short on time. So there are new demands constantly build what has happened for instance is that Higher Education has not answered that. But those boot camps that will not teach you coating coating but were seeing those limitations of what they have done with codng. A say this will get you into the job that not allow you to really think or master or be a creator. So in some ways they say we will create our own university. Otherwise why should they start their own university . So that i designed to go to somebody who knows how to do that. Said is the failure of Higher Education. So then to answer the need but those companies are doing Lifelong Learning. But if we do this to get people to be robot proved robot proof that is also an opportunity. We can begin taking questions said the package is there a microphone . Like many others in their room if i was taught economics is scarcity. Everything produced will be consumed in there is no excess. I believe a. I. With biotechnology have created an Economic System to distribute purchasing power so that Consumer Choice determines what is produced yet maintain for outstanding people . Thanks. This is an outstanding question because to the fact if a. I. And robots will displace us. Who will be the consumers or the taxpayers . So what is happening in that to define themselves. And that is beyond the expertise. That everybody becomes obsolete. And Higher Education and creates a Lifelong Learning for perot. I would not even begin to offer an answer but your major significant upheavals have we think of our future im not sure anybody has an answer that this is a big deal. To node the Experiential Education in the northeast with Online Education how do provide that x pharyngeal learning experience if your students are not near the campus . So is an everything that we do we are experiential. And now were moving with paul ph. D. Is to be the ever. But wasnt saying we have done, what does it mean . So to be short on time we have searched a certain number of campuses in charlotte and toronto and asia. But precisely to be where the lerner is. For somebody who is long on experience she knows what she does. It is sent that massmarket approach. And moving into a new field. So it has to be experiential. Which means the university is becoming a model. But that is what we have done. And then to that in the expert and jet expert and shell way. And even with Higher Education there are far fewer jobs. This is a healthy concern than the new job created. And doug miller that would be enough. To look at these new opportunities. I dont know but certainly i know one thing to recall the fact to be a part of them we will be losers. With some version of this question and the best answer that i get with that key parts of the equation and to your point with the type of work with the type of jobs but also along those same lines as learners and as creators to shape it in different ways. About Higher Education leading the world is middle of the pact broke what has to happen with the Public School system and secondary education and . And second overtime may 21st century i dont want to be operated on by a robot. And say no nonos stop. That becomes significant overtime. You are seeing the reaction were even in europe for the rest of the world with uber it will not surprise you but to have people that will not accept cash. It was a waitandsee situation and to become the model and it may take time but ultimately that is happening as we speak. That is viewed under those lines. So of a discrepancy that we have in the United States that is the of fundamental question to Say Something that may surprise you that Higher Education has to lucas so for instance we launched at northeastern the sheer. With the School Counselors or advisers are principles to go from the United States or canada to work with us to get trained in Experiential Education. So with our responsibilities i mention in Higher Education needs to change that it starts early with our responsibility in terms of science and engineering the they benefiting from that . Not really. Mentioning this critical entreprenuers creativity. And then and Society Moves more toward that keyword so number one how do you assess or proposed to the private sector . That is getting harder and harder. So it in whatever we do to focus on those input measures. Looking at those incoming students we know who they are. We dont affect the outcome but now that is something we need to work on. That is what you call this soft kill. And calling for the integration. With the human literacy. Every in junior it is very simplistic working on building a new city. How do we assess that . So with that platform and then to remain with him or her. And allow them to assess. And how we are hoping to meet that objective. Next year will be universal. So we have to start. With the perfect approach absolutely not. I went to a liberal arts school first not trading for a job but a Higher Education are how to learn so given these developments but over the last 20 years so are around the world to reduce or eliminate the history of literature. So what is the future . So we created a false dichotomy between the running and earning a living. We got away for that so now this is question and. So this dichotomy to gore around at to go around that from the human to the technological. So the second point stood to close the department. So that responsibility to do our souls a disservice were not teaching literature. Were not teaching history that becomes. So then move away from that idea that you are espousing. But it to say no. We need to integrate. So the world is changing. To have this enormous opportunity. One more question has been sent to in. I am looking forward to reading the book. So primary and secondary education to train the teachers to much how to teach. Higher education has been criticized is northeastern hiring different ph these . How do they get to that spot to teach experiential . And to focus on building those sciences but natalie that theoretical sense. That every educator is taught with experiential learning is coached to become part of that ecosystem. I invite you to do that. Has i mention those first aspects are to use separate endeavors. Then they go to have that six month internships for pro that is the integration of the two. And with that fine tuning of the because once they spend six months in shanghai a then discuss what is happening with the client they get out of their comfort zone
