Computers and before we get into that the topic ofs the book. At the school of management midirector of the mit center for collective intelligence. Ou i teach two main courses on strategic organizational design in these different situations like wikipedia and then the workshop where i help students learn about the capabilities and with that collective Intelligence Center and of those things that i wrote about in my book that was in a very general way to act collectively so by that definition every company or nonprofit is a collective intelligence our market and community and democracy are all examples of intelligence so to flesh that out a little bit i talk about as collectively Intelligent Systems and that i realized a short way to say that was super mind how the hyper connectivity in 2019 changed quick. From my point of view that is a very important part of the super mind that is possible. Many people are overestimating Artificial Intelligence i think it will be very important but they are underestimating how hyper collectivity will be. Connecting people to other people. And with that connectivity that happens all the time and then it is an interesting example to understand it if you think of the encyclopedia 30 years ago babies emails back and forth but because of the communication all over the world thousands of people could create the encyclopedia far larger than anything we dihad before and probably far bbetter and by the way almost for free. That is of a conductivity to organize the work of writing much more easily. T and with that ability. And as mentioned earlier with Artificial Intelligence that this is for strategist. There is huge potential but as many people imagine as artificialnt intelligence and then just to sit in the car att the bosses desk that is in the way of thinking that Artificial Intelligence will enable us to do. What are the most common uses of ai in our world . That determines you define ai with that Artificial Intelligence in the search algorithms Many Companies are now using chat bot for more and more things like that that those small parts of what could be done with Artificial Intelligence that these programs today and for the foreseeable future and then to talk about differentnt subjects and quite a long ways away. Youre just scratching the surface. Yes. But the possibility for hyper conductivity. But in ten years or 20 years and as people have estimated in the past to answer the question but the reason its so easy to estimate the potential of ai it is full of computers that are his intelligence as humans but if you ask people today how long it will take to have Artificial Intelligence that the answer would be about 20 years from now. Es but what a lot of people dont know i and then asking the same question of Artificial Intelligence and people have estimated that ai was 20 years away for the last 50 years. Then to have conversation with mit professor. So do you have any idea do you have a role . I havent had that involvement but to use that as an example of the original program like the game show jeopardy it do know the person that led the development of that program and i confirmed those playing jeopardy could not play tictactoe much less chess it was veryy specialized to thatt task. And i use that term to describe other stuff since then but in those that are called the same thing. And there is a long way from a general purpose that can do different things. You teach the mba class. Then participate in the program quick. Iro have no particular recommendations so the enterprise of ibm brings Artificial Intelligence echniques to bear. So that is one example you can do with hyper conductivity. So if anybody wants to participate you can do that very easily and from anyone anywhere in the world. Thats not the only way to do hyper conductivity. Caller good afternoon. I totally agree 35 years the Computer Program i totally agree with your assessment with Artificial Intelligence people trying to make things happen. And then people using omputers. And then had that first navigational system and the program for the navigation program. The point was to the computers and if anybody can solve the problem be our guest. And then with that success of 19 years before gps and then to translate we are saying with those factors that you talk about thank you for your time. And those that Work Together to create that. And so we see more and more very useful things of Artificial Intelligence with credit card charges and things like that is something that happens so frequently we almost take it for granted. Spent the next call. I watch your show all the time i wonder if hyper connectivity could be related to emergent behavior in groups of lower order lifeforms. In otherer words how colonies like ants or schools of fish is that a form of fiber connectivity . The example is interesting. I would absolutely consider animals examples of collective intelligence of birds walking together or beehives are ant colonies that is collective intelligence. I would not consider them examples of hyper conductivity because they still communicate with each other at a localit level. So one bird can sense the other but not with Long Distance communication across the entire planet and that leads to even more interesting kinds. What is the downside quick spirit that is a good question. It is possible to know too much. I was talking to a colleague the other day who was a Nobel Prize Winner in economics he espoused the view that what they want to do in government there is too much conductivity and too much transparency that the people make decisions with every comment they might make about what should be done to play a game that doesnt make that in the long run. So talk about super mind about democracy. T that is an interesting possibility. I think it is an interesting possibility and then to have a combination and Representative Democracy on every question the Representative Democracy and then you elect representatives and then you can do both. That most of us dont begin to have the time for anybody else fat once that. And then with the Environmental Issues for those that knew specifically and if at any time i could take it back and give it to someone else. In there with that responsive for what we have to do then to take advantage of thatan specialized knowledge. Thomas malone is the author and his most recent book super mind also the author of the future of work coming out in 2004. Thank you. Amazon, google and uber.
