Intersection of president ial history and politics. Its something that has been a passion my whole life. Has been fun to do that writing now. And to publish a book. And we want to talk to you about that book. The concept comes from many years ago. I started to notice the relationship between these at 44 men who has served as president sometimes Good Relationship sometimes really bad. I began collecting these quotations and then i started thinking about the political environment that we live in today. These quotes and the snipes have been around since the founding of our country. A lot of these guys did not get along. Sometimes they got along and then they did it. The early parts of their careers great friends. They found themselves in different Political Parties. And then about a dozen years before the death adam writes the heart warming letter to anderson. I always think that is such a good statement that we can learn from today how do we explain ourselves to one another. In this political environment. A mind soured. And into a honeycomb. The interesting thing about that quote is that it was just months after adams was elected president and jefferson was elected Vice President and they did not have a very Good Relationship with one another and did that affect the administrations to make absolutely. If you just imagine today if we have a president and Vice President from different Political Parties it will totally shape the environment it often seems like from your book the presidency ran against each other or followed each other had a bitter relationship. I think thats a very will said. You can look at 1912. It was the most Bitter Campaign you have incumbent william taft. And then the democrat woodrow wilson. Especially roosevelt was quite creative with the things that he lobbed against taft but wilson got into the fray and they fought back as well. One of the things i learned from the book. There is a lot of quotes that we hear or read about that the president s have said about one another that you cannot find them anywhere. One of them is 1912. It was reputed. They said that taft has the brains of a guinea pig. Its a great memorable line but its nowhere to be found. Here you have roosevelt talking about howard taft as a fat ted. Where did i find that. I think that was in a newspaper clipping from may of 1912 both taft and roosevelt were making swings through ohio. They were reported on what they said. I think that is when we are getting a window into some of this thinking. One of the more unusual relationships was a very Bitter Campaign. They hated one another. When they went there about the funeral. And they realized they didnt really like each other. And of course, aunt gerald fords funeral. He was willing to speak on the record. Some of what he said was said contemporaneously. Unfiltered somewhat. And a lot of it came out of the 1961 book. He would talk about earlier president s and he would say Franklin Pierce was a complete fizzle. He have choice things to say. Who is he talking about when he said this. He was the coldest man i ever met he didnt give a damn personally for me or you or anyone else in the world as far as i could see. See mac that sounds like thats fdr. Fdr in truman had not much of a relationship quite frankly. Somewhat of a dark horse. Becoming Vice President. Only Vice President for a few months before he died in 1845. I think they met once. Who did art on the front of the book. Just a delightful job capturing some of these. Our world today its no different. Thats one of the things that i learned from during the book. These insults have been around forever. I think the difference is that in the early days many of the quotes were written down in a private letter in a diary in a private conversation. Today an increasingly so it has been in books, speeches and now on twitter of course. Today the level of what we see in the Public Square is much more intense and more frequent than what we ever had before. Given that we are in a social media era they are not writing the letters that they are used to. Is it tougher for a historian. You dont get the unfiltered thinking of these men and i you all you get is the posturing that comes out on social media. I think there is a lot of fear in our society. And a lot of people who are afraid of seeing people that speak differently. All of these things combined. And the speed prior to developing yourself. What were you doing. I looked for 30 plus years as a contracting manager. They include a lot of interesting things. She tells the story of how they found some new records of andrew johnson. They are hiding in peoples addicts. I have a blog there. I have a couple of videos that recreate what it would look like if modernday tv newscaster was recording some key event. President ial sites and things like that. May they never rule under this world. I think about the long tradition that we head in this country. Here is the book. 101 president ial insults. What they really thought about each other and what it means to us, the author is mike purdy. On our Author Interview program afterwards Kai Henderson former dc public schools. About problems in the american and justification system. There is a long history of politics interfering with the effort to get content in. Both from the left and the right. More from the right historically that has led to a lack ofs best activity. Certainly at the national level. They are voluntary. States can choose whether or not to adopt them and 46 in 46 states at one point. They are very similar. And a lot of people think that is the curriculum that those standards are. And that they had content and i think that is some of the opposition in the premise of that. They mention a few foundational texts in american history. There is no a specification specification of content. Tucked into the material of the standards. You actually had to build their knowledge for coherent content curriculum. Even those that are may have difficulty responding to it. They may be caught in a system that is not is not set up to respond to it. Over content. They get to be a meeting a media circus. Everybody is kind of shied away from specifying content. If you dont specify content you get this real vagueness. People look at the standards and think thats all i need to do. I do think there are ways to avoid these political battles. There are an increasing number of districts. Fairly newly developed content. Some of them have a more social justice orientation. Kind of the western culture orientation. I hadnt heard a lot about political battles over these elementary curricula. So i think its a red herring. And the controversies in the controversies i have heard about have been raised about novels that are already being taught in a lot of Elementary Schools and may touch on some things that parents are wild about. But i think the bottom line here is we cannot let our fear of political battles prevent us from giving the kids access you need it most. Visit our website at book tv. Org.
