We went to talking to you about the book which is 101 president ial insult. The concept comes from many years ago, probably 30 years ago my research noticed the relationship between the 44 men who have served as president , sometimes Good Relationships and sometimes bad. Sometimes they start out good and it goes sour. So i began collecting these quotations and i started thinking about the political environment that we live in today and i thought this would be timely to demonstrate the fact that these flights by these men have been around since the founding of our country. A lot of these guys did not get along did they . They did not. Sometimes they got along one of the classic is tom adams and Thomas Jefferson who parted their careers and were great friends and collaborators and had a big folly now as they found themselves with Political Parties. And a dozen years before their death adams writes a heartwarming letter to jefferson and said you and i ought not to die before we have explained ourselves to each other. I always think that such a good statement we can learn from today, how do we explain ourselves to one another in this political environment. You have a quote talking about john adams, a mind soured, seeking for popularity and even to a honeycomb with ambition, yet weak, confused, uninformed and ignorant. Where did you find that. The interesting thing about that quote, it was months after adams was elected president in jefferson Vice President. So they didnt have a Good Relationship with one another. Did that affect that administration . Absolutely. If you just imagine today if we had a president and a Vice President from different Political Parties that will totally shape the environment, it often seems at least from your book that president s who ran against each other or followed each other had a particularly bitter relationship. I think that is very well said. You can look at 1912 which probably prior to 2016 was the bitterest campaign weve ever seen. So you have William Howard taft trying to defend the white house, Theodore Roosevelt, he is running and then democrat woodward wilson. It was vicious. Especially roosevelt was quite creative with the things he had against him but wilson got into the fray and taft fought back as well. One thing i learned from the book, there is a lot of quotes that we hear or read about that these president s have said about one another that you cannot find them anywhere. One was in 1912 that was reputed that Theodore Roosevelt said taft has a brain of a guinea pig. Its a great memorable line but nowhere to be found. At least i cannot find it. Here you have Theodore Roosevelt talking about William Howard taft, where did you find that. I think i was in a newspaper clipping from they are 1912 i want to say, and both taft and roosevelt were making swings through ohio and the newspapers were reporting on what they sa said. You use a lot of quotes from Richard Nixon in the conversation with monica. I think that is when after his presidency nixon was more unfiltered perhaps or news was coming out and were getting a window into something of his mind. One of the more unusual relationships is jimmy carter and gerald ford, a very Bitter Campaign in 1979. It was incredibly bitter. They hated one another and yet when they both went to the funeral, after the presidencies, they were spending a lot of time on the plane and realized they did not like each other and of course gerald fords funeral jimmy carter spoke and said probably no two president s have enjoyed such a close relationship as they did. They became very warm in their friendship. Harry truman is also quoted in here i couple of different times. He was willing to speak on the record. He spoke on the record, some of what he said was that contemporaneously, unfiltered somewhat and a lot of it came out of the 1961 book by miller where he would consecrate on earlier president s and say Franklin Pierce was a complete fizzle. So he definitely had choice things to say. Who was he talking about when he said this, this is harry truman he was the coldest man i ever met, he did not give a damn personally for me or you or anyone else in the world as far as i can see. That sounds like fdr. Why would he say that about his predecessor who appointed mvp. Fdr and truman had not much of a relationship quite frankly. Truman was a dark course becoming Vice President in truman was only a Vice President for a few months before roosevelt died in april 1945. So i think they had met once during roosevelt fourth term. Who did the art on the front of your book . It was done by an artist out of new york, victor and i had a lot of fun talking about concept and what it should be and i think he did a delightful job of capturing some of the president s were vocal on spoken and looking at them there quite angry. When we go through this book, our world today is no different. It is no different, thats one of the things that i learned from doing the book, these insults have been around forever. The differences in the early days of the republic, many of the quotes were written down in a private letter, and a diary, a private conversation that somebody would report on whereas today and increasingly so it has been in books, speeches and now on twitter and i think today the level of what we see in the Public Square is much more vitriolic and intense and frequent than what we ever had before. Its always been around because its politics. Given were in a social media era, people are not writing the letters that they used to. Is it tougher for a historian . I think its definitely tougher. You do not get the unfiltered thinking of these men and all you get the posturing that comes on social media. I think social media along with other factors is the reasons and why we have a polarized society, not only social media but i think theres a lot of fear in our society and people who are afraid of seeing who people speak differently and look differently and worship differently. So all these factors combine in the speed of our new cycle continues to escalate things. Prior to developing yourself as a president ial historian what work redoing. I worked 30 plus years as a contracting manager for state and local governments in Washington State dealing with Construction Contracts and consulting contract. President ial history. Com, what will people find. They will find my blog word includes interesting things, the most recent was a guest host with someone from Andrew Johnson National Historic site and she told the story of holly found some new records of Andrew Johnson. These things are hiding in peoples addicts and museums so i do a blog there and i have videos that recreate what it would look like if modern day tv newscaster was recording on a key event in president ial history. Theres resources on terms of links to books and president ial sites. When you look over your shoulder, what are your thoughts. I think about john adams statement when he writes to abigail, he lived in the white house for five months only and he says may none but honest in wiseman ever live under this roof or rural under this wil ro. I think about the long tradition that we have in this country as a presidency. The book is called 101 president ial insults and what they really thought about each other and what it means to us, the author is mike purdy. Now on book to be jeff mason and joel klein discuss a warning which is reported for a behindthescenes look from a Trump Administration from an anonymous source. You been around this town for a long time did you learn anything from anonymous . I dont think anything is startlingly new in the basics, its a critique of term presidency that we heard a lot in red in the same author in the New York Times and ominously, i think you learn the depth of the concern of this particular person and interesting details about antidotes. I thought one thing that was interesting was to learn the rationale for addressing this in this fashion and in an ominous book as opposed to with your name attached to it or keep it to yourself. I think thats an issue that a lot of people will look at the book and trying to figure out why do it this way and why attaching name to it or keep quiet until you left the ministration. Your down at the white house every day, what did you learn. A did distill some things we already knew and jerry refer to that, there were not any major disclosures in here that i made because weve seen so much of the reporting over the last two and half years, President Trump style, for example the writer goes into the fact that in briefings people were asked to boil down their talking points to one bullet point as opposed to briefing papers and even as opposed to three or five bullet
