Say about how gop leaders are reacting to the election outco outcome. The president does not like to lose and never admits loss. I more troubled by the fact that other republican officials, who clearly know better, are going along with this and humoring them in this fashion. It is one more step into delegitimizing, not just the incoming biden administration, but democracy in general. That is a dangerous path we. We would never accept that out of our own kids behaving that way if they lost. Right . I mean, if my daughters in any kind of competition pouted and then accused the other side of cheating when they lost when there was no evidence of it, we would scold them. I think that there has been this sense over the last several years that literally anything goes and is justified in order to get power and that is not unique to the united states. There are strong men and dictators on the world to think that i can do anything to stay in power. I can kill people. I can throw them in jail. I can run phony elections. I can suppress journalists. That is not who we are supposed to be and one of the signals that joe biden needs to send to the world is that no, those values that we preached and we believed in and subscribed in we still believe in. President obama from the 60 minute interview yesterday. Bob cusack i want to pick up on what he said about Republican Leaders but what are you hearing about how they will continue in what they have been insane about the november 3 election . Greta, thank you for having made this morning. Looking at the landscape of capitol hill in the postelection world specifically with republicans in President Trump Congressional Republicans did well. They held onto the senate Many Political handicaps said they would lose the senate pending the races in georgia in january and they picked up house seats which was really unexpected, especially because the democrats cash advantage. Moving forward a lot of republicans dont want to clash with President Trump and you know, you talk to them privately they know that the next president is going to be joe biden but they want to give the president some time to pursue his legal avenues and see where they go. I dont think it will be lasting that long because elect doors will be chosen next month but they want to give the president some space and it is an unusual time in an also unusual for a former president to criticize a sitting president and in that 60 minute interview its interesting that president obama said he wrestled that he did not speak out that much during resident trumps term and said some of the criticism on that was justified so i do think that Congressional Republicans, he started to see some of them say well, joe biden should be getting Intelligence Briefings and but not most Congressional Republicans, including in the leadership certainly have not congratulated joe biden and i think the dynamic will change after thanksgiving as we see some of these court cases play out which are being expedited but right now certainly most publicans on capitol hill are not basically calling on the president to accept defeat. How do you describe the relationship between Mitch Mcconnell, majority leader in the senate and the former senator now president elect joe biden . Its a good one. They struck a number of deals in the relationship between president obama and Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell is not good and was not good when obama was president so really it was the dealmaking came down to the joe biden and mcconnell and they struck a number of fiscal deals and president obama now criticized mcconnell in his new book and i dont think that means we will see a lot of kumbaya in washington but a lot of big sweeping a partisan deals in the deals that were struck basically between mcconnell and biden were must haves and Government Shutdown and raising the debt ceiling and dealing with taxes that were about to expire and they were kind of deals that had to be made for the most part so the relationship is good and mcconnell and biden certainly criticized each other on the campaign trail this year but at the same time, and never got personal. Cap personal between harry reid, majority leader at the time of the nominee john mccain and they had been very good friends and during that Election Year it got personal. In i do think they have a Good Relationship but at the same time Mitch Mcconnell easily won his reelection bid and it looks like he will hold on to the senate so i dont think there is a huge incentive for mcconnell and remember, one of his top Political Goals in the first term of president obama was to make sure that obama was the one term president. Im sure mcconnell wants to mak joe biden a one term president as well spew. I want to invite our viewers to join in on the conversation about the election and what is next for congress. S. If you are a democrat 202 7488000, republican 202 7488001, independent 202748 8002 text us with the city and state with 202 7488003, this morni bob cusack your newspaper had this headline, democrats lookomo sharpened message after senate setback. Explain. Well, democrats are very disappointed. They have been trying to win back the senate for years and they thought this was the best chance certainly in recent memory and in two years ago when they fell short Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer indicated that 2020 was a very good shot that they could win it back and barring a win in georgia where democrats certainly joe biden has been declared the winner but as far as other statewide races that republican usually win. They are disappointed there was conversations in the senate as well in b the house and what did they do wrong and a lot of democrats that we talked to have been upset, certainly the ones in battlegrounds races who were the most moderate they were concerned that republicans seized the message of defunded the police and seized other messages like the green and new deal in medicare for all which has been championed by the left and Bernie Sanders and progressives in congress and use that against them in key races. There has been disappointment and certainly there is excitement thatce joe biden is e president elect but the same time what can get done and what biden can get done with all his Campaign Promises are likely going to hit most of them will hit a brick wall and a likely republican led senate. As you said, publicans picked up seats in the house on the or in this last election cycle so there is democratic leadership elections this week and what could be outcome . Could there be a change in leadership . There will be some changes in leaderships because of vacancies but really at the lower level, the top three nancy pelosi, cindy hoyer and cliburn who are all 80 years old are expected to get reelected and there are some races for the number four slot as well as the campaign arm and that really could set the stage for who replaces nancy pelosi because remember, she has said this will be the last congress to get the votes on the house floor two years ago and she said she was either be speaker or top democrat for two, four years but now she said she will serve her term so this will be her last term as a speaker there is some speculation that cindy hoyer heard deputy and jim clyburn this could be their last so the race below them, one is Catherine Clark versus davidson cellini and that number four slot Hakeem Jeffries is already in leadership and is 50 years old and he is the favorite to replace pelosi and as the house cap democrat but that will not happen yetet so some of these lower tiered races could decide who will be the speaker or the minority leader depending on how the 2022 election goes. Now, that said while the nancy plus he doesnt have any challengers yet she needs to get 218 votes onuc the house floor t remember, theres a behind closed doors votes for the caucus leaders and then for speaker youve got to get 218 votes a majority on the house floor and even though she had struck deals two years ago there was a number of democratic defectors and she would have to minimize those public defectors in order to get to 218. She may have to strike a couple more deals but she is expected to be the speaker in the new congress but as we were discussing the publicans did well and he did better than expected and now Kevin Mccarthy who isn the House Minority leadr has already predicted that the republicansill win back the housen the Midterm Election in 2022. What are the potential public defectors saying they want from nancy pelosi . Great question. Two yearsgo what a lot of them wanted was rule changes to the house rules and basically that to give the rank and file more power. That if a bill, for instance, got a lot of cosponsors and g two thirds of the house backing it well, technically leadership cannot back it but there was a rule change thataid okay, we willllow some of these bills to actually get voted on a there were a number of other rules thatnu moderates pushed fr in exchange for voting for nancy pelosi and that was a Bipartisan Group. Tom reed, republican from new york was willing to vote for nancy pelosi after nancy pelosi vowed tooor these house rule changes which were implemented. Pelosi said she did not want to read t vote so he did not vote for her but there was a Bipartisan Group called the problem solvers and they have not yet said what they want but that is something to watch because they will want what they got two years ago and then they may want some other rule changes and one of the rule changes that is inside but significant that the marini party and house they are allowed a certain amount of amendments and motions and sometimes they will try to get a motion on a bill to basically kill the billy and that is offered on the house floor and minority has very few rights in the house but that is one of the rights they had and usually its kind of, to use that vote a a campaign ammunition his emotion at leadership does not want but moderates dont want to vote against because it could be used against themhether on immigration or healthcare or whatever the issue is. There has been talked instead of having that motion to be commit amendment it says that instead of just bei majority vote it would mean two thirds of the house to back it so the moderates could end up voting for itut it would still fail. Some people say its silly to ayve the motion anyway because if you are going to kill a bill you should kill it before it comes to the house floor but at the same time replicants will cry foul if that rule is adopted at the same time there the Minority Party in the rule change could pass. That is somethin to watch but rule changes on the house floor because that will be significant as far as campaign ammunition and as far as ive been in washgton the rule has been if a motion to recommit by the minority just would need a majority so two thirds would be a significant vote. Lets hear what are viewers have to say. Joann in portland, oregon, democratic color. Goodorning. Caller good morning.
