An interview with Joseph Mccarthy where he discusses the origins of what became called mccarthyism. Longines cone on scope. A Public Affairs program that 1951 untils from 1955. Its time for the longines cone scope. A Television Journal of the important issues of the hour, brought to every monday, wednesday, and friday. A presentation by the company longines company. Good evening, this is frank knight. May i introduce our coeditors longines coneon scope . Our guest for this evening is the honorable Joseph Mccarthy, United States senator from wisconsin. The opinions expressed are necessarily those of the speaker. Senator mccarthy, our viewers, of course, know you are one of the controversial political figures of our time. This is your first appearance since your overwhelming victory in the wisconsin primaries. Now, sir what brings you east at this time . Senator mccarthy your program. And i believe also this week you expect to make an address in connecticut, is that correct . Senator mccarthy tomorrow night at the Memorial Hall in bridgeport, connecticut. And of course our viewers know that in connecticut, thats the home state of a man that you had a few words with, senator bill bevin. Now sir, what, whats the purpose of your going into connecticut . Is it to defeat senator bevin or try to help to defeat senator bevin . Senator mccarthy my purpose will be about the same as the purpose in some 12 or 13 states i will visit. That is to bring important facts to the American People. I get a very strong feeling that most of our people in public life underestimate the intelligence of the American People. They try to argue and tell people how to vote. I think you need merely give the people the facts, and then you can go home and they will vote right. In bridgeport, connecticut, if i understand you correct, it is said that you are opening a 12 or 13state drive now in support of the National Ticket . Senator mccarthy i think i am scheduled to speak in some 13 or 14 states where they have a close senatorial contest. A lot of people came into wisconsin, to try to defeat you in the primaries and it seemed to have worked the other way. Dont you think perhaps when you go into these states it may have that sort of effect . Senator mccarthy well, sir, i do not intend to go into the states and tell people how to vote. I dont intend to go and discuss the local men running for congress or senator. I intend to go into those states and give the American People a cold, documented picture of the sellout in korea, the extent to which communism has been directing our Foreign Policy. Our suicidal Foreign Policy, if you please. And if the American People want more of that, then they can vote for the present administration. I feel that the millions of americans that have long voted the democratic ticket are just as loyal, love america just as much, hate communism as much as the average republican. I think it is up to those loyal democrats to realize as of today they dont have a party in washington. The only way they can have a change is voting republican. Do you think a lot of democrats came in and voted for you in the wisconsin election . Senator mccarthy i dont think it. I know it. Let me put it this way, two years ago, the democratic vote was 70 of the total. This year we had, i think these figures are 83 republican vote, 17 democrat vote. And most of the democrats apparently voted for mccarthy. Because i carry the democrat words better than i carry the republican words. Which proves my contention, that in this fight against communism it isnt a democrat fight or a republican fight. It was not a vote for mccarthy. It was a vote on an all important issue. The American People recognized that the one real issue, not the phony issue, is the issue of communism, corruption, all tied up with the korean war. And world war call it 2. 5, call it police action, call it what you may. It means the American People are sick way down deep inside with whats been going on. Id like to consider it a tribute to mccarthy, but it is not. It was a vote upon an all important issue and i just hope many of our good friends realize that this is the issue. You implied, senator by saying they didnt vote for mccarthy, you implied that youve become something of a symbol to a large group of americans. What do you believe you symbolize in the political scene now . I dont quite like the way you put that question. Lets put it this way, many people have been waiting for someone to expose the extent of which our suicidal Foreign Policy has been dictated from the kremlin. They have been waiting for someone to fight corruption the way men like senator williams have fought it. In wisconsin, we are voting in approval of a fight against communism, corruption and a sell out of american interests. They were not voting for joe mccarthy. I happen to be the recipient of the vote, and i certainly appreciate it a great deal. Coine other side of that is you were the recipient of all the protest vote in wisconsin. That would be against the failures of the administration. Senator mccarthy that may well be. Senator, i wanted to ask you about mccarthyism. Am i right supposing that the first one to use that word was Owen Lattimore . I think it was first used by lattimore or the daily worker. Communists gathered in new york to decide how they would fight mccarthy and they coined the term mccarthyism. As to the date of that, i frankly dont know. That is the argument, you see. Either the daily workers publication or the lattimore testimony was the first time it was used. Or the testimony by howard rushmore. And coinedunists met the phrase mccarthyism. I want to ask you about the congressional testimony about the institute of pacific relations. This was about a year ago, and it was a letter written by a secretary of the ipr to a mr. Varnette and the letter asked who they would invite. He writes, someone we might consider is someone from knoxs or simpsons office. He mentioned adlai stevens, one of knoxs special assistants. Why would he, back in 1942, stevensommended adlai as a participant in that meeting . What qualifications did he have . Qualifications. The other man has been named under oath seven times as either a communist or espionage agent. Let me finish. I would rather not go into stevens record too much at this time. We have just completed a complete and thorough research on adelaide stephenson, and i intend to give that picture on a nationwide network. After i give that picture of themenson, the history of since the time he entered the agricultural department, and after i give that history, if the American People want him, they can happen, but i dont think they will want him. I gather from what you say that it is fair to confer that you do not avoid personalities. Senator mccarthy i will never avoid giving the facts to the American People. It is so easy to talk about communism generally, to talk about the sellout in china and korea generally. Unless you call the rule of the traders and those responsible for the suicidal Foreign Policy it is a waste of the speakers time and the audiences time. I do not intend to get up and talk about treason and sellouts. Treason is created by men with faces and names. Those of us who are elected by the American People and command the watchtowers must possess the intelligence. If i may use a word we use in wisconsin, unless we have the guts to name them, we should be taken down from those watchtowers. Intend to ever avoid giving the names of traders triaitors. Even if they are in important positions. Thank you, senator. Thank you.
