Its really my great pleasure now an honor to introduce the lunch in speaker. And january of 2018, the standing of Harvard University ascended when philippe Philip Deloria departed from michigan unsettled into his war as professor of industry at harvard, the first full professor that is native american at harvard. It only took over few centuries there. Just think of the next four centuries when it might happen there. We will accuse harvard or michigan of theft, its in this beautiful fact that this absurd and good fortune for those institutions was ours before it was theres. Philip deloria received his degree from the university of colorado in 1982. Wanting to observe and understand humanity from many different angles, he then taught band at a denver metro high school. Having observed High School Music performance to satisfaction he turned four an mma in journalism and communication which was back when you could remember what to call that program when it was an acronym that comes out whenever i try to say. So, by one of the providence most racist act of kindness he took my American History course which was called the early american frontier in the journalism program. In that course, the first assignment require students to write an autobiographical essay about western adventure that experienced. The assignment launched on the adventure and i had 50 students in the class but i ended up with 51 papers. So, i poured over the class regulation was comparing the names there with the names of students who had submitted papers. This did not solve the mystery but it did give it a little bit more definition. A person named hank gomez returned a paper and something had gone awry with tank gomez and his relationship with the university in his name then did not appear on the course list. It probably figure out where this is going. From time to time, they filled the laureate fulfilled his workload and had very capable papers and had the work name of Philip Deloria had a different version of the paper of colorful, informal and full of vitality and probability and submitted it. That as the work of hank gomez. Law laughs asset our bid harvard has it on the rub side or something. It is not on harvard website, no. Moving on. It is now Public Record and thats good. But its also a Public Record that hang comments and Philip Deloria were both a students. I never suggested that hank gomez applied to the yale american studies ph. D. Program so i wrote a letter of recommendation two Philip Deloria and a week ago i had a archive impulse to find the recommendation that i wrote him three decades ago but phil with a sigh of relief did not find a time to perform this exercise and have that resource and benjamin. Anna say a word about humility and as they mentioned earlier there is a virtue and i tell my students its a precondition for all knowledge and help us to admit not only our ignorance but the possibility of are learning and the possibility of other perspectives and possibilities that i might discuss. I knew my dad as a father and as a colleague at the university of michigan and was just down the hall we shared the same office and convenient thing for the department to show offices and known him at an intellectual figure and of course in other ways as well but others of you have known him through different experiences as a teacher and collaborator and as a minty or a mentor and a subject to the historical analysis and an author that he read. Deloria was a complicated man and involved in many spheres of life. Complementary saying that i was disciplinary but he was more disciplinary disciplinary than me and studied law. He studied history and a probably a few others that i cant even quite remember. I never fail to learn something new about him when i meet people knew with religious work so on and thank them for sharing the learning. The third caveat of this election sovereignty is a practice in which the creates and shooting to engage one another with energy in the past and sincere engagement is to ask tough questions. While going to say is a piece is a great book or a world historian book and is not a perfect book but its greatness arrives from the arguments about Self Determination and originality and responsibility and catalyzed in a moment in these possibilities and in particular style and voice that a lot of those who came after and all of these things are super important. But to see to discuss an even joke about these ambiguities is not a sign of disrespect. Anything that a book gives us will need to embrace those gifts with humility and respect. For people of his generation its a critical and the critical taxed for the indigenous consciousness and at the same time they called out the audience with a critical voice and a demand for accountability in action. There is nothing illogical about it and go up in the shadow of the Organization Act to help create a culture of politics. The National Organization was capable and competent or potentially so or mostly so when they have these indian leaderships and bat a powerful faith in the future of indian people. He recommended tribal nationalism and criticize hippies and counter cultural us that got it completely wrong and it was the wrong occasion to praise cultural list forgetting it kind of right and on this particular line of question. He saw earlier in the convincing analogy of the corporation which is an honored form in to launch the critique of the capital conditions although i think youre right, this is a question for him and a shrinking one that seems to me he was interested in a slightly different question with these entities that we think about in those bigger terms. His definitions are tribal naturalism words were used and were precise. It was rested on native status as issues in relation to other governments and nationalism and another big nationalism was people who had to state and emphasize the superior forms of self governments and cultural production. Those forms were tribal and relational interdependent responsible spiritual and highly developed over time and matured earlier this morning that things developed over time to reach a certain level in which things worked better by trial and error and which will do certain results. In a way the, radicalism which reads as differently radical comes from how much faith he had went given control over the laws with develop new forms of tribal nationalism and be a model for change across the board. This is the tone that we read the summer which is striking about how much faith he had, how much confidence he had. This is a critique of course but this is a futuristic look that is looking towards things that can and will happen but theres nothing crazy about this either and thats the moment and determination which is pent in the paternalism and is widely affected tribal with the possibilities in this administration which is really feel for him and a personal admirer of the leaders in the 19 fifties and sixties. He characterized repeatedly as the affairs daunting to challenges. I find myself at this moment parallel about the career of his friend susan who was celebrated next week and the one thing of an writing a piece on this. One thing that stripping about her career is that the sheer numbers in the leaders in which she partnered with over the years. This was a time of intense Financial Stress with this limitation and then there was the punitive learning on the job which my grandfather, who conducted a massive social logical study in the church in 19 fifties, diving to reservations in the country made a major role which was helping him think about the country as a diverse hole. It was part of the training for the ncai and traveling around with his father and going into the different communities but another part of it was all about what my grandfather had done with the sociology and the all american Football Player in 1922. My grandfather in many ways was talking about Indian Country and interestingly, my father was having the includes civic of his hand which had fieldwork with the structure by her Fathers Network of church and the introduction that he provided for her. Every time i show deloria men in a geological trajectory like this i feel comparative to show women. One of the things that school is or is the painting of my great, great grandmother who i offered solely to be the father of her child mary solely and Institutional Capital was administrative but also it was at its core what they can ship relations and established through his family so the book bears a lot of traces in this learning and not all of which which is positive and notes that containing the ncai position and frustration of this incredible participation and the unpredictability of the politics. The first half of the book is razor sharp as other folks have mentioned as it takes critical aim and legal and political history and the churches and of course anthropologists. The second half as a little bit more with different themes and Race Relations and civil rights and in the future these are essays that are pieces rather than sustainable and the editor put in the sequence that we encounter what we do today and i want to pull out a couple that came into this through humor i want to pull out a couple of hints chapters and think about it with you for a little bit for the consideration of the legacy today. The chapter i like best where you can take it and read it instead of jokes is important but a light argument where indians are not stoic and have a strategy where its easily read as the equivalent of sitting around telling jokes and this was my experience at the chapter i could assimilate for me by taking a breath to come out of those really tough chapters and court launching into the rest of the book and i dont think its that it all and inclined to read it as a key as a style and the problem and the relationship between style an argument and in my problems writing argument is sometimes supplement to style but sometimes the style would be arguments that would be stronger but style is married to argument and its incredibly strong and powerful and you dont always get it right but theres tensions between those things thats really interesting in terms of reading this to the book. Style i want to say carries content in and of itself and its not just the superficial thing so the chapter suggests to me that is not just him for talking about something larger and a sense of style and was pulled together to explore this dynamic i thought we might go on to the most famous passages in the introduction to anthropologist and the paragraph in the book and will go over these quickly for a second its delightful to hear more talk going so, well in staking mike lane of just going to coast on that for a while but its critical kinds of methods and allows me to compare to an artist oren so ive tried to digest the sentences a little bit and one of the things you can see it on i make the argument that as fierce as it is its one or style doesnt actually support this in mind. Indian life as it relates tends not to disappoint people was calling out and getting those readers where he forced us to live our lives on what you think and then at the end of this does damage in this is harm and this is part of history and we have suffered and this is a piece of rhetoric that is fantastic with the analysis and the humor and the irony all happen at once. All of this writing functions and functions like the other which we can escape because the other work is okay to. This is where power lies and the rift is famous with the republication on style and is less humourists and more devastating style through the argument and they work here is arguments along with the sense of sequence and timing and politics. Read through this kind of writing across time as you can see as my friend reminds me is the same kind of skating irony found in generations of american writers before all the way back from william abbess which is to articulate the sense of the 1960s reader. The chapter exemplifies the native stylistic continuity which to find its own writing and will remodel the indigenous style of critique set through generations and all have to do is take at stuff on youtube with degeneration as the exact same kind of voice and there is stuff going on that notes that scott was in that same agreement and we can call a super serious indigenous modernism and two of them are so important is that irony requires intelligence and solve awareness but the conversion the irony into humor is wanting something more and transcending awareness which is exactly what theyre trying to do among white readers and forwardlooking self aware intelligent sense of self with indian leaders and future indian writers. Thats all foot would produce new ways and critically tied to the old way of thinking and will be a new age and will point you to this. Progress has been made in the concepts since the i. R. A. Its also worth noting and going back of this machine which did a real good job with this book and my understanding is they are the ones that were in this chapter in playboy and help get pieces in the New York Times magazine and they pushed all of those reviews and cultivating this book for a couple of months apparently before the week about. Heres the Playboy Magazine and he does this hysterical riff where he pulls out the medicine bag and a sacred object. I want a second where playboy was at this moment some pretty intense political writing was taking place and they started with Martin Luther king and highly recommend to anybody and its incredibly revealing. It speaks on this and it would take place over two or three or four days and to the point where it a say that want to break down the subject passed the obvious things and get them to say other intuitions that are more interesting. He grew confident as a writer and had a more fragile thing that he led on in that dialog which felt he couldnt get comfortable writing in arizona in 1978 and was right about respecting him as a writer and struggle with three drafts to finish and these were the kind of words with all writers and was a wonderful moment which to find him as a writer. In the auto auto biographical wave in was the city after custer who occupied up in high moore and others. Here he is talking about is first night into the lions head. So, on this magical first night he stays on after everyone leaves and the Village Voice comes in and a top awhile and they walk over to his apartment and they have his copy of custer and then the night shift is arriving. This is what he said over and over again and topics would switch as fast as people can get their scripts out and there were smart people back and forth constantly. It is no coincidence that they were there because it has become a obsession to me to tip the ball boy and to a lot of behind the scenes work and he also talks about an interesting kind of thing that the lions had and how much they loved it and theres many other things with these fantastic jokes. My twenties my dad always told me that men dont figure out their lies until theyre 30. It seems like were treading water so or 29 years only stars first job at the United Scholarship Service and the director of ncai when custer came out. Its a bit emotional for me to read these biographical pages and the selling off of all of the memorabilia that was there. You think back to him as a younger man imagine him in that moment. Custer he not only ended up being a writer in the american letters but he enjoyed and loved and embrace that. These were moments for him got a really coming together. The insistence on this is just moving forward to the conclusion. So, in many ways was custer also a justification was concluding another one of those stories. He was famously around in 1964 were the university of Colorado Law School was an inspiration in the form of refuge. He saw custer as a book a few bridges are the title a bit about earlier. He said that this place was in a certain position of Indian Affairs and should not be able to retreat. At least not very soon. One reason i want to write it was to raise some issues for younger indians which have now been raising for themselves. Its a critique for what was so unknown and the american institutions which is hard to be so specific and pressing the strategy of pushing for the tribal nationalism and militants had their moment and responded to this critique and the traditionalist with their respect. Finally, confirmed in his belief that they had bold work along the militants in his own way offered the best path forward in 1970. Perhaps the best exemplified by the resurgence of the ncai organization like the rights fund and the laws and administrative rules and thats one Important Message with the treaties which was his last major piece of indian writing and the issue of what martinez called the trawler g. Of custer and god is read behind the trail of broken treaties and in 1969 in 1974. One might actually expand detects tautology or i had a look up those things with sixties and seventies in them it was linked to cluster. We went back to the utmost good faith and im struck by several things and its the kind of document it with a School Students and its much more than that and its worth returning to the frame they put around what is not a standard but often impassioned to Pay Attention and to learn in many cases what smart interpretive conclusion and the leading with indians which with just as powerful as the innovation of the forces in the birth or Tribal Council and louis its.
