what we call a book bag. we call them backpacks. i got up early in the morning and put my papers and books in my book bag and went to the front porch to wait for the school bus to come up. when i heard the school bus coming up, i would run out and get on the school bus and go off to school rather than to the field to work. i had a wonderful uncle, one of my mother's brothers, who told me to get an education. he inspired me. he went in the military and served and came back, finished college, became a high school principal. he taught me. i had a wonderful teacher who told me in school, "read, my child, read." and i tried to read everything.
