Bushfires have joined together north of the countrys largest city sydney they have formed what is being called a mega fire say it is too big to put out. Grass fires. Bushfires. And even a fine nato a deadly swirl of flames spinning out of control. These are just some of the dozens of blazes this is ripping across eastern australia several fires have come together in a mega fire in an area roughly 60 kilometers across leaving the nearby city of sydney sway in toxic smoke. The speed and unpredictability of the fire leaves rural residents with little choice so any taunt him or just come over to sorcery just leave bushfires a common in australia but meteorologists say. Climate change is exacerbating this fire season its an extreme challenge especially for firefighters equipment as well for that if theres a 30 to 40 boarders i mean. Theres little relief in sight forecasters say more hot dry and windy conditions are on the way in the coming days. Into another area of Environmental Concern oxygen and they worlds oceans is being lost at an unprecedented rate threatening sea life important ecosystems and some coastal communities and scientists speaking at this weekends u. N. Climate change conference in madrid say that rising temperatures overfishing am pollution are to blame and our very own Alex Forrest Whiting joins me here in the studio to talk more more about this tell us more about these findings and what or who is to blame well its a report thats been done by the i. U. C. N. The International Union with conservation of nature and its the largest study of its kind and what scientists are warning is that warming sees are creating dead zones where there is no oxygen at all in the oceans now theyve already pinpointed to around 700 sites where theres virtually no oxygen left to tool up from 45 in the 1960 s. So you can see what a huge change there has been over the decades now all fish need dissolved oxygen to survive but largest species obviously need to maul so that means its more difficult for for example choose sharks molly more do they do they go to the shallow waters where there is more of the gas but then of course there is the possibility that they are vulnerable to fishing that leads to another problem overfishing and on top of that something weve known about for some time which is called nutrient pollution chemicals running off the land such as nitrogen into rivers into the seas. And causing more problems so all in all scientists are very concerned about this so what does this mean and in reality what are the cons trying to make us realize just how important the oceans onto our lives for example in protecting us from Climate Change and that is because the seas absorb the huge amount of Carbon Dioxide thats in the atmosphere and also heat and there was a big fear that that oversees going to be put at risk when there is less oxygen there is the problem for example of the loss of habitat and the loss of biodiversity so for example that has a huge impact on fish stocks which are under threat and again because of the whole issue of overfishing and also we mustnt forget another issue that we all know about which is plastic pollution so of course aussie life for dealing with that and on and on with scientists is saying actually we dont really know what the long term effects of this lack of oxygen is going to be but it doesnt look good it sounds pretty catastrophic what can we do what needs to be done while scientists is saying that there are 3 things that need to happen pretty much immediately number one curbing Greenhouse Gas emissions and number 2 and pollution so chemicals running off the land and also thirdly stop overfishing that sounds good in theory in practice very difficult to put into place particularly when youre talking about a Global Community trying to get politicians at the top to take these bold decisions when we know that some leaders dont even necessarily believe in Climate Change so it is a problem for them but i think the the warnings are if people dont do something about it soon and we actually dont know what will happen in the future such a complicated problem we dont use Alex Forrest Whiting thank you so much. To fronts now where different protest movements have come together to cause more on rest police scuffled with yellow vests protesters angered at the rising cost of living in the country transport employees all on strike as well in protest against changes to the National Pension system and the government plans to unveil a pension reform on choose day expected to include incentives to make people work 2 longer labor unions say the plan threatens a halt for workers rights. And for more on the story were joined by lisa lewis whos in paris lisa were seeing another day of nationwide strikes protests with unions as well as the best protest but things have been relatively calm until now havent they. But thats right but as you can see right behind me theres heavy Police Presence here at this demo by these security you know one of the far left unions here in france they are demonstrating against the recent labor market reform unemployment benefit reform but obviously also against the pension reform its a big picture they say in about call the president they say is taking apart our Social Security system Security System elsewhere in paris you have another demonstration going on by yellow vests i have heard that the end of us protesters try to join this demo its their kind of conflicting reports or some say the police have prevented them from coming some say they didnt want to come but in any case you have lots of police everywhere here in paris and george you seem very afraid that there are more questions today. Ok now the trigger for these protests as you were saying pension reform president of course says hes simply trying to simplify france is notoriously complicated Pension System so why is it people are so angry. But people are really angry and theyre really afraid many people here feel. You know the plan that im on our correspondents to bring together 42. 00 you mentioned systems into one single system and they understand that the Current System might not be sustainable in the long run but they just dont trust the president to do the right thing they think that hes just going to take away from those who are already struggling to make ends meet and at the end that the rich are going to be even better off and they want they understand that that the system needs to be reformed but they dont trust him to do the right thing and they want him to actually make something happen so that those who are less well actually have more when they retire we can some people are really struggling even today who do you think will back down 1st will it be the protesters or will it be president mark home. Quote president mcconnell is determined not to back down he knows that this reform is crucial for his time in power he thinks that he needs to carry out the reform to satisfy his coverts as when he came to power he was appealing to people from the center left and people from the center live right but now left wing which is has largely lost confidence in him and he knows that he need to satisfy those who are asking for more reform and thats why even members from his government say that even if he doesnt manage to push through this one the pension reform that he will have very little chance to get reelected in 2002 so he doesnt want to drop the reform but he also marries that if the strike strike goes on for weeks or even months that might really have an impact that he might have to back down so he knows that he needs to negotiate and talk to unions and thats what hes trying to do the government will unveil the details of reform later on next week and well see what they say all right lisa lewis reporting from paris thanks so much for bringing us up to date. Lets take a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world there are reports of more gunfire in the iraq in. Capital baghdad a day off for at least 15 people were killed and more than 60 wounded in an attack on antigovernment demonstrators widespread protests have rocked iraq in the last 2 months of the corruption and the economy. The United States and iran have each freed a prisoner in a swap a chinese american detained for 3 years on spying charges and an iranian accused of violating u. S. Sanctions have returned home and it was a rare act of cooperation between the 2 off style countries now u. S. Authorities also watching from motives off to a shooting by a 1000 ethels lieutenant at a u. S. Naval base in florida the Saudi National was training as a pilot he killed 3 people and wounded several others before police shot him dead the saudi government has condemned the attack the Saudi Air Force trainee opened fire in a classroom building at the u. S. Naval station in pensacola where a couple of 100 foreign students are in training in washington President Trump said king solomon of saudi arabia had called to express his condolences. He said that people have made me angry by the actions of the shooter and that this person in no way shape or form represents the feelings of the saudi people who love the American People so much the f. B. I. Hasnt yet named the shooter or commented on his possible motives there are many reports circulating. That the f. B. I. Deals only in facts but at the naval station floridas governor addressed leightons concerns i think theres obviously going to be a lot of questions about you know this individual being a Foreign National being a part of the Saudi Air Force and then to be here training on our soil that to do this the stations Commanding Officer has defended the International Training program saying its important to train aviators of the United States partner nations. Now the European Film Academy meets in berlin today for the yearly film awards and joining me in the studio is culture correspondent Scott Prescott thanks for joining us now its not a real awards ceremony without a scandal and this year obviously it is involving someone who is no stranger to control bothy yes polanski the polish director he is nominated in all the major categories in the european film awards are being held tonight in berlin a couple of hours of his film the controversy is not really around his new film which is called off sort of spy and its a pretty serviceable period drama its been fairly well received by by critics but of course around plans he himself because the nominations came just a couple of days after new allegations of french actress accused polanski of raping her years ago in 1075 when she was just 18 and this comes of course after a series of new allegations that have come to light and of course most people do know that polanski himself is a fugitive from u. S. Justice because he pleaded guilty to statutory rape of a 13 Year Old Girl back in 1077 but then fled the country fled the u. S. Before sentencing and has been a fugitive ever since so the controversy of course is around whether or not. A system like the european film cavity should be honoring a man whos been accused of doing these things and theyve been calls to boycott the film to boycott a polanski and i think thats going to be one of the big subjects one of the big topics tonight at the awards and so do you think theres any chance that he might win despite all of this controversy i dont know i the film is is fairly decent this has been critically fairly well received it won the jury prize in venice where premier but i really cant see the cademy awarding klasky just the sort of honor i think google will be a huge shock if they do that tonight im particularly because there are so many much better films nominated this year i mean there are 2 masterpieces really that i think will do the big winners tonight the 1st is most of ours pain and glory. Which is a career masterpiece from the from the spanish director in the stars im tony harris in what i think is best ever role where he plays sort of like the fictionalized version of a lot of our himself as a truly amazing movie and then theres the favorite which is from your guest on to most which is already a massive success and also really actually already won an oscar for star Olivia Colman playing that queen am on a film that i think recreated the the genre of period drama of pure historical movies so those are 2 amazing movies and i think the you cademy you though they dont take my advice usually but if they did they they would be well advised to pick one of those instead of the polanski ok well we will find out tonight. Thank you so much.
