The french economy. This is day to be a business on robots in berlin its great to have you with us germany has announced a new blueprint for relations with asia calling in particular diversity and its focus on the region thats being interpreted as an effort to lessen its dependence on china a move that would almost certainly have consequences for german businesses. From its messy internment of we goes engine jiang to its crackdown in hong kong and of the shop and the edge of its diplomacy in recent years china is politically a growing problem for germany. Economically china is a golden goose on average german Blue Chip Companies earn 15 percent of their revenues from china some go further china accounted for more than 40 percent of turnover for folks who are going in the 1st half of 202034 percent for b. M. W. And 22 percent for adidas. And that gives china leverage in the relationship the new guidelines from the German Foreign ministry are meant to begin correcting that imbalance one key word diversification spreading out amongst more countries for strategic and trade partnerships foreign minister told his chinese counterpart one gave this week that his country wanted to be seen as an equal if we wont allow it that we become the plaything of a superpower competition between the United States russia and china we want to be in dialogue with everyone. Easier said than done many german businesses are wary of endangering their relationship with china well on this lets speak to gabriele feldman i his president of the killings to change for the World Economy here in germany thanks a lot for joining us so the German Government has been pretty clear in its criticism of. Certain chinese policies the treatment of the weak. On kong security law but how much clout germany actually have i mean is it big enough trading partner to make a difference. Yes the tyranny is a big trading partner of china its also a Technology Partner it has grown in its importance because of course the United States is decoupling from china so in determine he has clout in this relationship and is an important factor in pushing china towards more risky prosody into the whats a more balanced relationship. Other european leaders have talked about the europe as a whole being a bit more selfconfident in the face of china whats been lacking in the european approach that. Well i think thats very easy is unity and you know we all know about the 16 plus one initiative for china actively tries to drive a wedge between the European Countries of course germany is much more exposed to the chinese economy than say france or spain or italy zal there are different interests within europe that make you need more difficult but its important now with these new guidelines that the chairman he takes the driving seat that does more to unite europe behind a very balanced and reasonable approach which is now led out in this new paper beyond china west germany looking. Well in this specific paper theres been a published yesterday the chairman is looking at particular the r. C. N. Countries indonesia being the largest and fastest drawing amongst them we already hear from treaty agreements for example with singer poor but others are i dont negotiate or are in difficulty for example title malaysia i think this target is exactly right and the 2nd big power of course in the area is india and chairman he has not yet developed a good strategy to deal with that country that potentially is larger in terms of population than china and also has a lot to ground to grow over took over in terms of for Economic Development which india strategy is as important of what is reason for this region then a smart way to deal with china. From the kill institute for the World Economy thanks for joining us meanwhile china has acted reacted angrily to indias decision to block 118 chinese smartphone apps beijing has called the move a violation of the legal interests of its developers the bands cover a Popular Video game post online marketplace. Payment Service Alley pay among others indias i t Ministry Says its protecting the private data of indians and defending the countrys sovereignty india had already banned thats including to talk as a military standoff at the india china border continues on this i speak to our Business ReporterAshutosh Pandey he joins us from bonn russia tossed how much of this is about Data Security and how much is pure politics. Well i think probably its a mix of both more politics and economic than Data Security while there are concerns and fears of data breaches and how these are absolute Border Security risks but we must not see these bans in isolation theyre part of a. Wider area of measures that the Indian Government has taken to actually limit investment from Chinese Companies in india and this all started to one of the worst commissions between the 2 countries at their borders in in decades and 29 soldiers were killed and no number of chinese soldiers were killed so the bureau after that there has been an effort by the Indian Government to actually limit emissions from chinese they have been also instances of how tenders have been cancelled there is growing scrutiny on Chinese Companies looking to invest in india so its actually a mix of both clearly very tense chinas come back pretty hard against these bans telling india to correct mistakes how important is in there is a market chinas big tech. Its inclusion market or lets be sure that for now theyre not generating a lot of their revenues from india its still a small market as far as revenues for say 10 cent or baidu a concern but they certainly see it as a Good Opportunity there is a potential there over a 1000000000 population and thats what theyre trying to actually capitalize on but now these bans are certainly adding some sort of uncertainty as far as their plans are concerned as far as. A tick talk and by dance are concerned they have been could be more immune and remember theyre looking for buyers by dunces looking for buyers for ticktock and any such ban is going to actually work on the what kind of price they can actually extract from potential buyers should have found a thanks for keeping us up to date. The finest grapes in the world grow here in champagne country but the coronavirus pandemic is taking the sparkle out of the market for bubbly. Restaurants were closed for months weddings parties and receptions are all cancelled the pandemic threatens the livelihood of champagne producers like eve. Good. Old wine regions are in trouble at the same time were in a Global Crisis and the whole industry is affected what is certain however is that what is not consumed during a certain period is no longer consumed later. The government is sensitive to the plight of the wine growers its introduced an aid package worth 250000000 euros in alsace alone several 1000000 liters of excess wine are being distilled to make way for the new harvest this would normally be unthinkable but during the pandemic theres no alternative but to pour off the precious wine some will be distilled into ethanol for disinfectant. We look were only doing this because we have no alternative but it hurts deeply to see the wine go like this. The wine growing center is worried the mayor of middleware wants more support. For the government aid wasnt immediately ready but of course it did help to pay the bills. Naturally this wasnt directed aid it was indirect assistance we have to pay back later its a lonely. Group. As youd expect in a wine village like this the mayor is a connoisseur. And. He runs a winery together with his wife and son. Welcome to the show were experiencing an historic reversal in the global surge of people getting small towns in the country for the allure of the big city the pandemic is changing so much. Needs water she can no longer open. Like a few weeks ago she lost her office drop in the city and moved back to her village. To collect water from any neighbors tech. This was hoping to get. Straight because everything in the city do it inside the house. Except. Her daughters remains in the village while their mother spent 8 years in the city working to support them trips home where it wasnt making sense in a way because i had to pay. Some money to my kids home with the. Kids so it wasnt. Home and be with my kids and do something here. Now the 38 year old. Just turning a pastime into a profession in a small house she takes precedence this fits. She receives up to 7 orders a week and has already made enough to invest in an oven her daughters cell powered they are happy to have their mom back. Where did you miss most of your very very remote. It is not so many young women that are independent but getting to see women. In their lives it encourages me it helped me go on the move and it helps me be. Cultivating fruit for export is just one of the Business Opportunities she could explore here in the village. Cynthia is full of ideas and optimism for her new life in her home village but also here in the rural areas people are feeling the pinch of the Coronavirus Crisis and the economic consequences of the knock down. Cynthia is determined to persevere in her backyard shes already working on her next project. So i went to a certain critical place this small place like oh ill be sending. People off and make us so that people do not have to go to town to get pizza because so they can only. Look at the list of belittlement and then im getting from baking is one thing that im trying to save so that i can be able to do that cynthia time bonnie is happy to let her daughters moved to the city to continue their education but shes certain her own future lies here in the countryside. Sam brannan leads the risk and Foresight Group at the center for strategic and International Studies have cities there are a little or is this just temporary. In my view its temporary and the reason is because of course there are a lot of reasons you would not want to be in a city right now the disease is more transmissible among densely populated populations and it is more transmissible indoors both of which define cities and of course through Public Transit we see higher rates of transmission as well some forms of public transport in any case but i think the long term the growth of cities is just unstoppable or in a cot to me in the labor market now where people need to be clustered for innovation economy for flexibility between jobs for technology bases and so everything is moving in that direction and as soon as we have a vaccine hopefully next year i think really humanity will be in a hurry to sort of get back to where things were before this began on the other hand i do think the idea of working remotely the nature of work itself perhaps the reduction of commercial real estate these are factors that were moving before hand and have been excel aerated by that and ive been reading a lot of people feel safe in the country or safer in the place they grew up. Ive also been reading that a lot of broke remote communities and and country towns over all it takes is one infected person to enter and the disease can spread like wildfire i mean this is whole concept of safety have you defined that. Yeah so i think the disease obviously moved faster between cities initially they were connected by air corridors there were more people and before we really knew how to take the necessary measures against the virus or we didnt do so effectively you saw a lot of transmission in cities so they were the 1st place the pandemic hit but for instance the United States we now see much higher rates of transmission in rural areas. And were beginning to see in rural areas around the world pretty Fragile Health Systems that are rapidly overwhelmed when the virus shows up there so its a bit of a false sense of security really people are not safe anywhere right now from the virus if theyre not taking the sort of distancing and mask wearing and other other measures. And so in many ways youre probably better off in a city right now if youre following those precautions but obviously people are returning home also for economic reasons they may have lost their jobs they may not be pay rent so its really its a its a difficult time its an insecure time no matter where you are and of course the pandemic is an ovum but but what about the next one because were told next one will hit at some stage will cities be better prepared. You would hope so this should be a wake up call i mean in many ways the 2 cities that were hardest hit by this were with china new york city and new york and neither really appeared to be prepared for what happened in cities around the world likewise you know its a very uneven response seattle in the United States on the other hand where theres been a lot of thinking about disease preparedness seem to be much better equipped there was a lot more remote work early part of it for cities is going to be to decide you know can you sort of shut things down rapidly particularly air air transport appears to have played a really big role in the initial spread here and so having a plan for that next pandemic keeping an epidemic from becoming a pandemic is critical here and really the biggest Lesson Learned i think was that everything moved too slow and there was a sense that something that was overseas couldnt just so rapidly as a plane flight arrive in your own city so theres a lot of work to be done by cities and so much disbelief a lot of people believing it wouldnt hit them or affect them well what about the worlds biggest city in developing countries. Yeah so i think thats a particular challenge because when we say cities its a big war but theres a lot of difference between cities that are rich cities and poor cities increasingly there are these hyper dense cities that are developing and in africa and in south asia. And in parts of china as well and you know this is going to put really big strains on the cities were already people are eating out life on the margins and you know i think what we dont see a lot when we talk about migration is that a lot of migration inside of developing countries happens from the countryside to these big cities it within countries before people leave the country so theres a lot of Development Work to be done as well and trying to figure out how to make those cities safer and safer from pandemics Climate Change a lot of things that were going to be experiencing that greater rates over the next decade and beyond san fran thank you very much for being on the show today thank you. And youll turn to us because jones is our science correspondent derek williams. My wife has cancer and different on cola just sort of told her Different Things about her risk levels if she catches kovac 19 so is she more at risk from the disease. Im not a physician so i cant answer this question directly for a specific patient but but what i can do is try to bring you up to speed on what researchers have been finding out about the connections between cancer and covert 19 for many months now trustworthy sources like the World Health Organization and National Health authorities have listed cancer as a comorbidity with clear ties to more severe covert 19 outcomes but as a new study involving over a 1000 patients in britain points out cancer is of course not really a single disease but actually a wide range of them which is why the researchers said that blanket statements like cancer is a risk factor are really reasonable or informative. So what they did was split up Cancer Patients who taught coded 19 by their particular cancer subtypes to see if some of those patients were hit harder by the disease than others and and they found Something Interesting sars cove to susceptibility they say was worse in people who had cancers that affects the blood or lymph system like leukemia or lymphoma which backs up earlier smaller scale chinese and European Studies that came to similar conclusions so the evidence seems to be growing that while cancers in general puts you at more risk when compared to the general population some types like these a logical cancers likely put you at more risk than others.
