Nic lets come to you know we hear there that the impassioned plea from. How is her meeting with the e. U. Foreign minister is being seen there in minutes. What people are definitely following these talks in brussels and these sanctions plans i think most the opposition as we have money going to that this is a bit its a question of too little too late this is a regime that is being under sanctions time and time again and the time time again has set out those sanctions if there is a regime in europe that was prepared and had he been asked to broaden made other arrangements i think it is about a russian one but i think at this point this is about the symbolism the symbolism showed that europe is paying attention to whats going on here is following this i think the most important thing for people here was that europe has refused to recognize the results of that rejection that was the big deal this is now for some details really doesnt have that much in the way of hald power as its inability to really put pressure on this regime but it is about the symbolism of showing support by the russians in the country and those that have left. As for the official reaction what we heard are going to furious rebuttal of these plans last week from the Foreign Ministry threatening to respond asymmetry and even to throw out foreign journalists alexander lets talk now about what pressure the e. U. Can exert here the German Foreign minister who has called for sanctions against president lukashenko himself so can we expect that actually to go through. Well actually that is what the foreign minister said after their last meeting in berlin a few weeks ago when they have announced that they are ready to cut to the sanction list if the situation is not going to improve on the ground in belarus and if there is she continues to use violence against peaceful demonstration that wants traitors and thats of course what we still see in minsk in our cities in belarus however adding to the sanctions list is one thing and agreeing on the list is another thing and the Foreign Ministers are still discussing the same sions with cyprus as you mentioned locking the senate against the russian officials and trying to couple them with punitive measures against turkey so we hope at least that there will be or what we can expect is that there will be an agreement but there are still discussing the same sions and the discussions are still going on and of course this is. The use of credibility that is now putting into question as long as the Foreign Ministers cannot agree on the sanctions start and nick i want to come back to you because this diplomatic debate comes off the back of another weekend of protests there where you are in minsk i mean how are demonstrators keeping the momentum going. Well that is the thing sumeet the regime here obviously happy to sound hoping there is some attention when 2 people see you but if you cant remember here these protests are costing the states huge amounts of money. Being paid to write lease to keep the most estates those resources are finite despite suzi changing youve seen those images we can weeks of protests coming out against police and Public Knowledge and just trying to do those Police Forces literally and metaphorically weve seen people ripping off the Public Office ripping off the mosques and police off and running away a strange thing to. If they really are convinced that what theyre doing is legitimate or even legal but in the metaphorical sense weve seen hackers loyal to the opposition hacking interior ministry databases releasing the names of Police Officers something that they obviously are very worried about weve seen activists post during the buildings the redemption complex where police live showing their neighbors what these people be getting up to that is Definite Development the government seems very worried about and one that seems to be promising quite quite a potential to put pressure back from the streets on the government in the weeks from. Our correspondents reporting for us Nick Connelly there in minsk alexander phenomena in brussels great to talk to you. Lets take a look now at some other stories making headlines around the world attack that antigovernment protesters in thailand installed over the weekend has now been removed the plaque in bangkok declared that thailand belongs to the people students have been leading protests since july calling for reform of the monarchy and political system. New restrictions on movement have come into force in spains capital madrid as authorities try to combat rising coronavirus cases almost a 1000000 people in and around the city will not be able to leave their neighborhoods except for work study or medical reasons the restrictions will be in place for 2 weeks. New zealands Prime Minister just then to argument has announced all remaining coronavirus restrictions will be lifted across much of the country with the exception of its largest city auckland will continue to have some measures in place for another 16 days the citys outbreak does now appear to be under control. And hundreds of pilot whales have become stranded along the west coast of the australian island of tasmania government Scientists Say it appears that dozens of the animals have already died rescuers have arrived at the site and are assessing the situation. Now to a banking scandal of gigantic proportions a cache of documents just revealed show that for years banks around the world have helped divert and conceal criminal funds the documents leaked from the Us Treasury Department appear to show how banks how to help to circumvent International Sanctions including those against iran and syria danish and british banks as well as germanys storage bank are among those implicated all over the world to using the Global Financial system to launder money its a dirty with lucrative business for the banks. If a bank notices a species transfer it has to report it to the authorities. Thousands of such reports were time by buzz feed news and then evaluated by the i. C. I. Jai. Its an International Network of investigative journalists. They have discovered evidence of Money Laundering worth 2. 00 trillion dollars. You could learn a lot by handling money from criminal sources. So thats why its hard for banks to say no to criminal money. In germany dortch a bank has some explaining to do the countrys largest banks already had to pay millions in fines in 27. 00 tane after dodgy dealings in russia. The investigation reveals that those illegal activities a much more expensive than previously thought russian criminals used torture banks Moscow Branch to loan to millions the current c. E. O. Christian saving served as head of corporate order thing at the time he did not raise the alarm but subsequent external investigations deed. Bank says it is since toughened its internal controls and it denies that c. E. O. s saving did anything wrong it says he was unaware of the external probe. Yeah im not i dont hide it because she founded a unit that led these investigations is what were not playing next to what we have since been external investigations to this and no stage could any responsibility be traced back to the head of the business. End of it and if im flipping to somebody to the conservatives who have nothing to say the investigation also shows that u. S. President donald trump may have profited from dirty money all agog from kazakstan board apartments and the trump new york property with laundered money trumps Company Denies knowing who these customers were but they did make money from the transactions. The investigation shows the scale of international Money Laundering efforts to curb it a floundering because regulators cant get to grips with highly sophisticated criminal now. It is a massive scandal lets talk about it more now with our Business ReporterArthur Sullivan is with us here in our studio and do we have our correspondents shall see delaney over in frankfurt near the headquarters of Deutsche Bank great to have you both arthur lets start with you were talking about a massive scale here so many banks that are implicated what does this tell us about the Global Financial system you know the skin is huge soon you know at the center of it is these 2000 or so suppose so called suspicious activity reports and these were these are reports detailing what banks suspect to be criminal activity in their accounts and so on so theres so much detail to pore through its 20 years of reports around 2 trillion dollars worth of transactions so so much stuff to come out and so much specific detail about some of these transactions what they tell us is something that on one level we already know about the Global Financial system bunks how for years facilitated Money Laundering and the socalled washing of dirty money not that its something that they necessarily want to do but its something that has been happening but what these reports show is the extent to which its been happening and in some specific examples shines a very very strong light on exactly the nature of some of those transactions and i guess why they are so potentially bad for so many people one of those banks is germanys biggest lender Deutsche Bank and chelsea i mean if we look at the numbers here it was involved in fixed the percent of the leaked transactions i mean tell us more about that. So georgia being very much at the center of this scandal. Is obviously a blow up because theyve been embroiled in so many scandals over the past couple of years and theyve really been trying to move past it some of the details that have come out of this investigation were already known some of the Illicit Activity that it had been involved in such as for helping evade sanctions against iran or for Money Laundering and russia those are things that torture bank has already been fined for but what weve learned today is that that for many of these things they continue to to carry on those activities after they had already been fined and as well as just these documents really just shed light on how lax really was for forth in time Money Laundering controls for example and russia where its Moscow Office was was under a lot of scrutiny for for Money Laundering they just have very few controls in place at all even the most basic ones like knowing who your clients are having an address for them they really didnt have any of that information so they definitely were turning a blind eye to. To these activities and thats really putting a lot more pressure on them today so what do you think this is going to mean for Deutsche Bank. It definitely opens up to more regulatory fines to more regulatory investigations Going Forward as i said they have paid some fines for these activities already but investigators likely will take another look at these reports and see if theres more to be done already is being investigated from by the department of justice and the United States for several Money Laundering complaints this could certainly play a role in that and it also does raise more pressure on the bank c. E. O. Christiane saving who was overseeing auditing at the time of some of these Money Laundering transactions and russia which of bank has said that he wasnt really involved in that but critics say he should have taken a stronger approach to that so a lot of questions and we are seeing this certainly reflected in the stock price today its down about 6 percent so investors are clearly stooped by these new reports so arthur as we heard there Deutsche Bank is now under massive pressure again to clean house but who really is responsible is it the banks or the regulators who have also failed to do their job i mean ultimately sumeet is a little bit of both now its important to remember this information came directly from the banks they were obliged to file these reports of suspicious activity so they were largely aware of what was happening its not necessarily proof of criminal activity but when you see some of the cases broken down its quite clear that the banks had a very very good idea of what was going on and started as a moral question on them why has this been allowed to happen when theyre literally making money through fees off some of these multimillion 1000000000. 00 transactions at the same time it is ultimately regulators and in the u. S. And elsewhere that are responsible so its a little bit of both i mean the banks really should be should be doing better on this and some banks do better than others as weve seen Deutsche Bank is doing particular poorly or husband to keyboard in the past but ultimately its a little bit like the global tax question its hope to regulators internationally to come together and governments to figure out a way to crack down on what is of global problem rather than one specific to any individual country well have to leave it there our business correspondents are there sullivan here in studio Chelsea Delaney for us in frankfurt thank you both for. Much. Now with over 4000000 cases india has the 3rd highest community of people suffering from alzheimers disease in the world after the u. S. And china experts say the lack of awareness surrounding the disease means many elderly people go undiagnosed and for those who do get treatment the coronavirus lockdown has been an isolating difficult experience with many family members having to step in to care for alzheimers patients. Quarantine has been fun for the sooty. She has spend playing games attending online classes and coloring with her 9 year old granddaughter should be. The care centers like this one called hope asha you were instrumental in providing patient care before the pandemic dr seuss notionally ization helps immensely in managing the disease. But now things look Different Group sessions are no longer held and all the caregivers wear protective gear and maintain social distance the change was confusing and isolating for residential patients. Who. Was sitting next to bear him having been you know giving them for who they were but lets what is this. They were all really calling them come here come here while the residents adjust to their new circumstances the engine is also helping patients at home they have to look to schedule and activity kits with cognitive exercises which they then help the patient stack go through with. Patients in gauge hopes of what episodes of violence which can be aggravated by isolation. And become very aggressive for now for 3 to 3 months. They were not even taken out to the bar or even are playing and that theyre becoming very. Smart after following this routine that will be in the give them theres a lot of different. Dissolute these have managed to keep any such episodes in checked should be misses her friends at school but is enjoying the praise and affection she gets for looking after her grandmother. Shes certain poverty quietly enjoys a 2. Piece. Could have used for porting for us there. Now to the biggest night of the year for programs on the small screen that was held on a grand stage with no audience the emmy awards only a hint of the glitz and glamour that were used to the u. S. Network h. B. O. Came up the big winner of the night its show succession of the watchman took home a handful of hardware. For hello and welcome to the pandemic. At 1st it looked like any. Money but it soon became clear there was some technical trickery and no audience but more than 100. 00 stars joining from internet feet it was a big challenge but everything went smoothly. Did you ever think you could do it. The top job the h. B. O. Series succession scored big wins across the drama categories with its star Jeremy Strong named best actor. In the bar the night we asked me about the moment i fell in love with you. This is the moment but the most awards went to watch me an adaptation of a superhero graphic novel tackling racism in america. My perception of time yeah i get it this series took 11 awards in total including regina king for best actress reminded us that its not only awards season in the us court also election season got a vote i would be remiss not to mention that being a part of the show is person is watching and how voting play and go to ballot pedia dot com vote up the ballot please why thats time to lay down you know where i had the all fired cup 3rd. Partially renovated rose. Stanek sheets creek swept the comedy awards with 9 prices breaking the record for most wins in a single season for comedy. But this shows the fact you live a more political than comical in his acceptance speech as you know as well our show i did score is about the transformational effects of love and acceptance and that is something that we need more of now than weve ever needed before and i just wanted to say for any of you who have not registered to vote please do so this year is emmys was hailed for its many nominees of people of color. One of them 24 year old scindia also became the youngest we know of best actress in a drama for her role in the series euphoria. But to talk more about the emmys now Melissa Holroyd from good of you arts and culture is with us hi melissa so this year the emmy awards they were digital they were virtual how did that work yeah i think it worked ok i mean i think along with a lot of other people my heart sinks that little bit when i hear this would chew all because everything seems to be virtual at the moment and being the 1st socially distanced emmys meant the ceremony was always going to be a little bit rocknroll we had jimmy kimmel in l. A. And they had 130. 00 camera tame sent out around the. World to peoples houses or to wherever else they met and that provided some of the highlights and lowlights of the so we had David Letterman who rocked up he just sort of appeared in a field with a big bushy beard looking like a hermit whos been looking like a hermit for quite a while now and he had a jar of all of it in an emmy for the back of a car for this variety talk series it was always going to be a little bit awkward and i think jimmy kimmel own that or could nurse the opening sequence when jimmy kimmel came out and he talked to an audience that effectively wasnt there an audience that was in his head and then suddenly they really werent there and that was a big reminder of how isolated everyone is and how you know those of the taste of the rest of the show if you like i found a little bit depressing. So that was part of the emmys that kind of fell flat but at the same time there were big successes the story of the watchman for example that was a show that really one a lot of hard work also reflects the Political Climate in the u. S. Right now to tell us more about totally current watching is absolutely spot on at the moment the series explores the legacy of racial violence in the United States the whole thing starts by looking at a real but little known massacre that took place in tulsa oklahoma in 1921 where white vigilantes attacked black residents executive producer damon linda hoff dedicated his best limited series award to the victims of that atrocity its inspired by the 1987 graphic novel of the same name watchman explores an alternate reality where massed vigilantes hunted as criminals in a story that tackles issues of Terrorism Police brutality and racism sound familiar its really really current at the moment is the 1st comic book adaption to win a major and leave for best limited series and it does 2 things its at once a comic book show and a show the. Examines these very very important issues so it was a big night for the watch mbit also for a show called shits creek tell us more about this one thats right shits creek spelt with a c. And to tease for anyone thinking anything different everything everyone is saying that this years emmys was a shits creek show its a canadian show about a rich family who lose almost everything and have to settle down in a place called shits creek its created by eugene and dad livia father and son team they created and starred in the sitcom they both took home and mays that makes them the 1st ever Father Son Team to win emmys in the same year they won 7 the show won 7 prime time awards and 9 emmys in total all right thats certainly something to celebrate and just quickly succession did really well succession did really really well successions a great show its a little bit like a modern day dallas and sort of the its also sort of along the lines of like king lear its a terrific show if you like a good night at the emmys for a lot of shows there most of all right from d. W. Arts and culture thank you so much for joining us. Books you meet your favorite writer living in china like to see myself as the kid style in the strange grown up world deal where you grew up. The power of influence or what they mean for democracy. Welcome to all mind session. Influencers. Recently voicing their opinions about political issues. On the new dynamic is emerging. What does this mean for democracy. Joining our discussion starts 1230. Pm to global 3000 this week we find out how young people in uganda attending their dreams into reality. We learn about a potential solution for global food waste. And we need to photographer document the effects of Global Warming in the sun help. More than a 3rd of our planet is made up of deserts and dry lands and that percentage is rising every year an additional 70000 square kilometers of fertile land tends to desert the main courses a deforestation over grazing on the over use of Water Resources all of which deplete the soil of essential minerals with temperatures set to rise over the coming decades the rate of disaster for cation is likely to speed up considerably more to scarcity is already a problem for 1000000000 people most of them in africa. The world risk index says the situation is particularly precarious in the sun held region. In West Central Africa people here have. From fishing and farming for thousands of years it appears the democrat at 1st glance. But one of the worlds biggest environmental catastrophe says unfolding here. 20 years ago the lake surface shrank by 90 percent and now Climate Change has brought extreme weather thats just drawing the local farmers livelihoods. Photographer and the spiral is working on a photo project that documents the effects of Climate Change in the entire cycle. Spyros the last reporter in the region before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic back home in germany africas problems seem far away still they have a direct impact on europe. 80000000 people live in the sahara region their livelihoods will be taken away in the coming years and decades the people have to go somewhere and go they will just a matter of where. On lake chad byron experienced firsthand how the climate catastrophe lead to conflicts forest terrorism and africa. Extreme weather is getting worse harvests are failing and large parts of lake chad can no longer be traversed because nature can no longer provide for the people here there are intense fights over the remaining resources entire villages have been burned down. Or into villages that ended up at war with each other and it was clearly about resources it was but access to water access to food and fishing rights the weapons they used were as archaic as the landscape spears bows and arrows. Of people die on lake chad to the regional conflicts that have been brought to the region. And. And the spiral has photographed in syria afghanistan and in the balkans he shoots with a wide angle lens which means he has to get close up to people. Spyros work isnt limited to farmers he also photographs were islamic extremists women who have been raised to understand the interplay between hunger or religious extremism from seeing them firsthand including only. Drives around the lake at night and recruits young man you offer a 500. 00 and a k 47. 00 is very enticed into someone whose livelihood is disappearing. From that quarter for you. Also went to nigeria where the conflict between the nomads and the farmers has been escalating for years its now one of the bloodiest civil wars in the world for a week spiral accompanied Muslim Falana nomads as they drove their cattle herd southward during the dry season. But passengers caused the situation to explode when full lonny herds grazed on farming land the farmers shot the cattle the nomads burned down the farmers villages in retaliation both believe theyre in the right and the government is unable to resolve the conflict. Later we heard the other side of the story we went to the christian farmers and listened to their version of what happened at this one village called bari it was completely destroyed by the full army people dozens of people were massacred people were decapitations and they took the heads with them it was very brutal. Internal conflicts led to a military coup. Troops marched through the streets of the capital bamako and force president and Prime Ministers to resign. Not even the deployment of the German Military which had been in the country for 7 years could prevent the total collapse of the government. In march and the spiral was in mopti an area that was once popular with tourists today the region is isolated and millions of civilians suffer violence there caliphates and ethnic militias but no government mali hasnt been seen for quite some time. We wanted to put me in the so we went to visit there with the Prime Minister and there was an armed unit a kilometer long at least a 100 vehicles just so we could visit the village says a lot about the security there or. More than 2000000 people from the lake chad region have fled due to hunger war and extremism and aspirants provocative pictures show the impact this has on people and how violence leads to trauma and devastation. They have no choice but to flee and they wont be the last. Hunger is on the rise all over the world it now affects around 820000000 people and yet some 1300000000 tons of food or wasted every year in developing countries this is often down to a lack of infrastructure as a result on average 6. 00 to 11. 00 kilos of food a wasted this way per person per year in industrial nations that figure is 10 times greater retailers and consumers often toss out food just because it no longer appears fresh extending the shelf life of produce could improve the situation. In the. Fruit and vegetables rotting in fields or during transportation to consumers. According to the un food and Agriculture Organization or f a o some 14 percent of food is lost after harvesting before it reaches the market or retailer. If you go to a particular country or particular village youre likely to see varying levels of food losses and these youve been on a situation would go up even to 50 percent if youre talking about less the fruits and vegetables for example if theyre from it does not find a market for that particular food product in a timely basis now this is huge amount of food and if you you convert it into our monetary 20 this is a lot and if you only read it as well into the laws to the environment or the Environmental Impact that is also huge. When that happens water pesticides and resources used for transportation are all wasted. Some 7 percent of global Greenhouse Gas emissions can be traced back to food loss and waste. If the chief causes include problems of transportation and refrigeration. To power from harvest to Kitchen Table as a race against time. A California Based Company appeal sciences might be able to help. Founder James Rodgers and his team have developed a liquid that could extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. Appeal is a little exactly like it sounds peel we applied to the surface of Fresh Produce you cant see it yet if you look at it slows down the factors that cause the fruit to age. It helps even without refrigeration. Appeal is a liquid coating that dries into a kind of edible skin. The coating helps the projects last up to 4 times as long. As time to time to transport the project to storage and to eat it before it spoils. Up. Based on lip its another natural compounds found in fruits and vegetables. Theyre extracted and blended into a tailor made solution. By combining them in the rate ratios when they dried a dry eye in 2 in arrangement that allows us to control the factors that cause street to age which are basically water going out and oxygen going in so same materials were just a new trick by finding the right formula to apply to different kinds of produce early give them the same kind of protection that you have a lemon on a cucumber or on a. Dutch wholesaler natures pride sells some 120000. 00 tonnes of fruits and vegetables a year they import from 59. 00 countries especially latin america in rotterdam the imported projects continues to ripen before it sorted packed and shipped to the retailer spoilage and waste is a common problem in the industry but the Company Hopes to minimize these losses in the future. The way they actually bought it and they dont use it and that costs money so in the chain if we dont know in a way you dont spend that money wrongly with the people we can reduce food waste well 60 percent of that we did a level. Food that used to land in the trash can now be sold. Every day natures pride treat 6 tons of avocados with appeal before sending them to supermarket shelves across europe. The main customers are in scandinavia germany and the netherlands. Natures pride is the 1st company in europe to use appeal. Theyre planning to start treating other kinds of fruits and vegetables. Are saying is going by air or using a few we might give them the possibility go by boat and that is our forces they would be fantastic so theres lots of opportunities. So far the new technology is mainly being used by Large Companies the smaller ones cant afford it. But appeal says planning to change that with a new Business Model in which retail chains and supermarkets pay smaller producers some farmers to install the necessary set up in return they receive longer lasting produce. Farmers in places that havent had access to National International markets could also benefit. And so the opportunity is to be able to use appeal to reduce the transport station costs and increase the quality so its not a its a way d for a small producer to grow something thats intrinsically valuable to collect some of that value. Extending the shelf life of projects will help but it wont end the problem of food loss and waste. For that transportation and refrigeration systems will also need to be improved and expanded. On consumers will have to stop throwing food away and start only buying what theyre actually. This week in global ideas we look at Employment Opportunities how can jobs be created for young people while at the same time protecting our planet and its resources just outside of the ugandan capital kampala our reporter julia visited a learning hog which encourages young people to turn next patients into reality.
