Failed West Perth motion would have urged re-opening of outdoor facilities

A rare notice of motion that would have urged the provincial government to immediately re-open all outdoor recreational facilities was defeated during West Perth’s council meeting May 17.
Put forth by Coun. Jeff Marshall, and seconded by Coun. Murray Rose, the extension of the stay-at-home order by Ontario Premier Doug Ford until at least June 2 has been controversial as it limits citizens from participating in a myriad of outdoor recreational activities. He said in his motion that the risk of transmitting COVID-19 in outdoor settings is “extremely unlikely” and outdoor activities like golf, tennis and beach volleyball are low risk. The fact that over 40 per cent of the population of Ontario has received one dose of a vaccine and the numbers are increasing every day coupled with children and adults’ mental health issues negatively affected by the repeated lockdowns – the latest began April 8 – made the basis for the motion.
