Youre a little cautious on market. Reaction to earnings and data news that is coming up this week. What do you make of it . Im quickly losing my caution, charles, and the reason is, the markets responded very well to earnings. The old recessionary tiff which held market sway for a while seems to be behind us as news comes out on earnings. Markets are looking at earnings, saying what recession . Gdp Growth Continues to be strong. Fed will cut this week. Market moving forward. Dow and nasdaq are making new alltime highs this week. Charles erin, the big news this morning, there is a lot but the tiffany news is remarkable, this is a name, one of the retail names hadnt done too well earlier in the year. All of sudden made these enormous moves. If you look this earnings season, consumer driven things. Last week, tesla, electronic sportscaster, snowmobiles, polaris, recreational vehicles, these stocks are going through the roof. Things we dont need, but were buying them as a country. Shah brought up gdp. Can the American Consumer keep this going . So i think, tiffany is unique in that lets not forget 60 of the revenues, more than half come from outside of the United States. Were not just talking about the u. S. Consumer. It is very much luxury goods. Luxury goods versus nike are two different worlds apart. So i think that purchase of lvmh of tiffanys is about, a, getting a great brand at a great discount. Charles right. Tiffanys was beaten up. This is just, Bernard Arnault vision of having a luxury conglomerate. Buy it when it is cheap. We know that consumer is doing well. We know weve seen wage growth. I think right now charles shah brought up a few month, all the talk was about recession despite the fact we knew these things, so many of wall street, record amount of Money Managers sitting in cash right now . So the problem was hard to explain to consumers, a, we are talking something that might happen 12 or 24 months later. Right now were having good earnings quarters. Things are better. Were looking at 2 contraction. Things are looking better. 2020 at least on positive growth. So from the stock market prespective things are looking good but another big thing pushing up the stock market is, fed will probably cut rates. Charles right. Where else will you put your money . Charles right. There is worry about recession two years down the road, you have to put your money somewhere now. Charles to that point, shah, i talked about major Money Managers. You can see friday, even today we popped strong, right . Were up 200 points on the dow and then we drift a little bit. We cant seduce some of that bigtime money off the sidelines. Even the viewers watching with we hit the highs is this when i shoulding selling or buying . There seems to be a push and pull going on right now. It has been going on since 2009. This is still the greatest mistrusted bull market in history. This proves once again i think market has further to go. This bull is not dead for that exact reason. There is so much money on the sidelines. Im a case in point, charles. Ive been overly cautious. I missed a large part of this rally. I will have to employ a lot of cash Going Forward. I see a broadbased rally across all sectors. We were led last week, by energy, industrials and financials. Im seeing tech bouncing back. Broadbased rallies, you have to come back in. Im a little behind the curve. I need to get caught up. Charles erin, you dont make moves halfway through earnings season, were halfway through this week, is there anything jumping out at you . For two months now value is outperforming growth. Youre seeing much better estimates that are beats, that are earnings across the board for your value based stocks versus your growth. A much cheaper valuation. I think were finally starting to see that maybe that shift where people are saying, you know what . These facebooks, these netflix, all have problems, im moving away from the Growth Stocks and move for into value. That is two month trend. This is where we may see it going the next six months. Probably well sign it. I imagine the meeting is scheduled forchilli lee. Charles bring in First Trust Advisors economist, brian wesbury. Lets talk about the china situation. We heard in the Chinese Media a lot of stuff with respect to phase one. Getting it together, having positioned when president s of china and america meet next month, maybe that will set the stage for the next phase . Yeah. It looks like this phase one will include a freeze on tariffs, maybe even a little bit of a back off, some give in by china on intellectual property and also purchases of pork and soybeans which are great for farmers and a big constituency of the president. But heres the real deal. The chinese are losing exports. They are being forced to come to the table. This socalled trade war, i actually call it a skirmish. It is not a real trade war was back in the 1930s, it is hurting china a lot more than it is hurting the United States so they have to come to the table f they dont, they will lose the supply chains forever. Im very positive that this will happen. Ive been expecting it for a while. I think it is also lifting the stock market as this uncertainty goes away. Charles brian, some of the big question marks where do we go on transparency, particularly when it comes to government subsidies on china . What will happen to huawei . The enforceability of all these things. How much time will the room, markets economy give to President Trump to come up with these things . What people are realizing the pressures he used are working to make china come into the fold of a kind of a normal country when it comes to trading. How can you have laws that allow to you steal . When they say were interfering with their internal sovereign laws, do they really, those laws really say its okay to steal . Thats not, i mean that is in the ten commandments. You cant steal. For them to accept this, shouldnt be a hard thing. That is what normal trading countries do in this world. They dont steal from each other. Charles right. So i think pressure is there. I think President Trump, i think people are giving President Trump the benefit of the doubt, that he is doing the right thing. I think when they sign this phase one deal i think it is going to be a big victory for the president. Charles for some time china pointed to history and things that led to the opium war. Correct. Charles boxer rebellion, humiliation in front of the world. It worked for mao. Xi tries to dip into the pool from time to time. Think i youre right, they need american expertise. They want to go to consumer based economy and not rely on exports as much. Right. When it comes to the rate cut, what do the market need to hear to make it not sort of anticlimactic . I think the rate cut is coming. Interesting, none of the things right now. Were moving closer with china. Brexit is wide open. It is still an uncertainty out there. And europe is still slowing. So all of the things powell said to justify a rate cut still exist but, but, they may still put a floor in it. I think that is what the market expects. They think one more and done. I think, clearly market is expecting it. Clearly the market is okay with that. Thats why were at record highs. Fridays employment report will be a little weak. I know you were probably going to ask me about that. We have minus 75,000 in manufacturing jobs. Because of the gm strike which is now over. So were going to have a weaker october number. November will bounce back strongly. This economy is doing well. Another rate cut. I mean, i dont think the fed should be cutting rates personally. But it doesnt hurt the markets. Charles right. People say, golly, if that is the case with him what about these ordinary citizens, either homeless, whether temporary or in some cases permanently . Its a big issue. There are people in my district that have been impacted by the Power Outages and of course the fires have been a disaster. The damage they have done. We need to have more federal resources in the state to fight these fires as fast as we can. We also need proactively more Forest Management to clear brush and to have the fires that are responsibly done so that we can prevent these kind of mass fires taking place. Connell that is interesting. You mentioned federal funding. I know the Trump Administration has talked about the very issue you just brought up with management, Forest Management. Why is there such pushback against some suggestions get rid of things that light up almost instantaneously to mitigate this issue . There isnt in terms of clearing brush or in terms of having actual managed fires that clear out the danger of broader fires i think there is recognition we need to do more of that. That there wasnt enough investment in that for the past 20 years. Where there is push back, we should not be clearing the trees to, for logging interests or commercial interests. But in terms of responsible Forest Management, of course we need to do a better job on that. Charles california is not just the wildfires. Looks like your state is in a lot of trouble. Census bureau says income inequality in california, the rich and poor gap is getting higher. The homeless situation, higher gas prices. We are 15 of the gdp of the United States. Are you okay with the idea of a broader leadership, whether it is tech in overall market rather than just a handful of names driving the market up or down . I think that is frankly better. That is a sign of more rationality in a sense returning to the market. That is a sign of the whole passive index Fund Investing trend continuing to expand. More mutual funds, more 401 k s, for better or worse, just blindly buying. You know, the Bigger Picture, that yes, amazon, facebook, apple, now with that being said, charles, well talk about the counterpoint. Apple, microsoft, two out of three trillion dollars companies. Theyre essentially at alltime highs. There is still concentrated leadership but youre seeing a lot of, a lot of stocks go higher that have been kind of, going sideways while these Bigger Companies have been going strong. I like that. Charles apple making a new alltime high just about every session the last two weeks. Thats right. Charles we had a little bit of merger mania if you will, francis. The tiffany story we talked about in the a block after bit and the stock is up 34 . The flipside of that do you buy anything that is breaking out . Do you chase anything here . I personally am not a chaser but i will tell you we have an uptick in the ipo market. We have an uptick in mergers acquisitions. We have to discern whether this is late cycle or final push up or whether we have a reacceleration and i will say some of the commodities markets have popped, some of the inflation has popped. Well have to see if that is sustainable. Well have to look at economics numbers, jobs numbers you mentioned on friday. Inflation numbers, see where they fit in to give us an idea. The other thinking that will give an indication of short term market trade something the volatility index. Were hitting alltime highs again volatility is relatively muted almost near a alltime high. If volatility remains muted i see a breakout in the overall market. As your other guest said, more picky i think.
