Pompeo adding china will be the trump Administrations National security if trump is reelected. Americans warning of 25,000 workers can be furloughed as coronavirus cases spike across the country. U. S. Airlines received 25 billion from the federal government in exchange for keeping workers on the job until the money runs out on october 1st, travel demand is not expected to return to 2019 highs for years. Take a look at shares of American Airlines this morning in premarket, we are looking at decline of 4 and twothirds percent on amr. Massive twitter hack meanwhile the social media form hit with awe of attacks on highprofile aaccounts, hackers posted tweets asking user to donate money to bitcoin, joe biden, president obama, jeff bezos, elon musk, all among those targeted. Twitter released a statement saying this, we detected what we believed to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools. Once we became aware of the incident we immediately locked down the affected accounts and removed tweets posted by the attackers. The news sending twitter shares lower the premarket. Decline right now of 7 on twitter. Joining me right now the cyber guy, kirk canutson and liz peek and chairman for American Conservative Union matt schlapp, thank you very much for being here. Kirk, how did a hack like this take place . Kirk yeah, it is something and if you look back at times jack dorsey twitter ceos account got ahold to, whats happening with twitter is a massive, massive violation of their own securities. Somebody got the key to twitter and administrative controls internally the kind of employees would use to control your account and they went and changed, this is how it worked, they went into your profile, they change who had the person is thats in charge of your account as well as the email and at that point they went ahead and started posting as you, coordinated attack and how they got into twitter isnt clear yet. What we do know the most common way that your account can get hacked is through fishing scheme, you clicked on something, looked legit. The one thing you can do with that you would normally notice login alert by text or email to you, you didnt look at it and you say that wasnt me who logged on, you make sure that your account is in good shape and if you enabled two factor authentication and require you to get a texas or if youre making changes to your account and that way you will have much better control of your account. In this particular case, though, this is something that jack dorsey has a lot more explaining to do. Not only to the market but also to consumers. Imagine, maria, what would happen if the president s twitter account got taken over and hes talking about crazy, crazy beyond crazy things in terms of what could jeopardize our National Security by a hacker. Maria yeah, thats the thing, the way that they did it to actually get into the system and change the person who is actually in control of your account, that means any of us are vulnerable. Kurt did this really happen to influencers, people with large following. Accounts like yours that are verified and reach a lot of people. Hackers were sophisticated and knew what they were doing. Im curious about the investigation and i want to know who might have been involved inside of twitter but something highly unusual to happen as large social media concern as twitter to actually lose the keys to your entire company for a moment. Maria well, what are the odds that this was a fishing expedition going toward election day. Can these kind of attack become more common around the election, how vulnerable are twitter users in that regard . Kurt well, it could influence decisions and minds. Instead of pushing people to fraudulent crypto currency scheme which by the way the fbi is also investigating, imagine if they were pushing it to false information that could jeopardize a wave, start a wave of retweeting and reporting in other platforms and cause minds to reshape as it did in previous elections. Maria yeah, thats exactly right. All right, kurt, we will be watching, thank you so much for that, and we are also looking at our panel to to jump in here. Whats your take on this, liz peek. Liz well, i think a lot of people who have been embarrassed by things theyve said on twitter in the past have claimed to have been hacked. I guess the question is how novel is this . Hasnt it been the case always that we are vulnerable on twitter . What strikes me about this it was a moneymaking scheme which is pretty weird. I mean, no one none of the people in that list that you mentioned, maria, are going to haul fall for blatant scam, i dont think. It almost seemed like a publicity stunt from someone who is maybe trying to undermine twitter. Maria yeah, matt schlapp, we are about 100 days from the election, im looking at this potentially sort of a warning sign or a fishing expeddish to see what can be done around the election. Yeah, you know, when i think of twitter, you know what i think of, maria, i think of realdonaldjtrump and what he has done and revolutionize the way in which a politician talks to voter. You know what donald trump did last night, he made a big Campaign Announcement on another platform, so what this really means for twitter is that if people gravitate to parlor which is much more accepting of conservatives and really big accounts start to go to other platforms, guess whats going to happen to twitter, itll dwindle. So this is existential question for at jack. Maria this is a really good point that he made announcement on parlor and then youre seeing parlor get more activity. We will see if it actually makes a dent in terms of market share. Real quick, mark tepper, economics of twitter stock, down almost 7 , i also want to get your take on china reporting growth in the quarter. It is not moving market but apparently the country is saying they are actually seeing growth in the Second Quarter. Well, when it comes to china i really dont know what i should believe that comes from them. No one really knows how they calculate it. China is not very transparent and if you look at whats going on in the u. S. Versus china all this covid talk is front and center in the u. S. , its scaring people, its roiled the markets a little bit. In china no one is really talking about it. Im not saying it doesnt exist there, it might be worse but they are not talking about it. They are secretive. On twitter i would be buying on pullback. I think engagement will stay high. I do think parlor is competitive threat but i would be buying twitter on a pullback here. Maria all right, we will keep watching that. With are just getting started. Coming up secretary of state keith is here on the United States confronting Chinese Telecom giant hauwei, latest out of china. Sean is here of tax exodus. Johnson and johnson chief Financial Officer joe wolf will join us on the companys quarter expected later this hour, delta ceo ed sabastian and 8 00 a. M. If youre worried about too much wine, dont worry, a second dallas might help but everything in moderation. Stay with us right here. Maria welcome back, majority of voters backing the former Vice President. Biden leading in wall street journal nbc poll and quinnipiac poll, the president only netting 36 approval in the poll. President trump devoting Campaign Manager brad passqaul, joining us former california congressman and former candidate darrell issa, congressman, always a pleasure to see you, thank you so much for being here. Thanks for having me on and as you say theres been a legitimate shakeup in the president s team and a lot of it is based on the mistake that was made in tulsa because, remember, before tulsa it was pretty easy to understand. One man was going out to talk to America President ially and the other man hiding in the basement and thats still true and thats part of the message that i think American People will see and hear going forward. One man in the basement reading teleprompter and the other person leading the nation. Maria yeah, i dont understand these polls, then, you dont see joe biden out and about, you dont really he did obviously release an economic plan the other day but its loaded with tax increases and spending on the groan climate plan and yet leading in the polls. What do you make of the polls, are you buying it . Im not buying it and if you want to say youre happy with the current environment, pandemic being handled differently in every state, every city, of course, you are. Its one of the sad things. The president is limited in his authority, he cant simply preempt all of the states and all the cities as much as hed like to but at the same time if you ask people who is trying to get my children back into school, who is, in fact, opening up the economy, who has a plan thats going to return us to prosperity, you know, they are going to without a doubt if theyre honest be 100 , thats President Trump. Maria well, whats the state of play in california. The number of coronavirus in california rising with more than 11,000 new cases at home, hospitalizations on the rise, Governor Newsom reclosing businesses statewide and now many are looking for congress for further stimulus. Whats your take on, this a proposal expected in the next few weeks, darrell, do you think we will see a fourth stimulus before congress leaves again on august 8th . Im afraid we might try to use printing money instead of addressing the virus in the appropriate way. Initially some of the financial stimulus made sense but lets be honest other than getting the a vaccine, the fact is we will have to live through it and the original intent which Governor Newsom has seemingly periodically forgotten which was to make sure that our Healthcare System didnt get overtaxed but at the same time recognize that this like the flu, like the measles and like the chickenpox is a virus that we will all get, we are only slowing the rate and those who believe that we should stop it have missed the point. Thats not going to happen and we may never have a virus like the flu, we may never have virus vaccine that totally eliminates it. California needs to get back to the original message. Governor periodically does understand that its about staying within limits, not simply trying to make everyone stay home and ive had to fight the governor at time over unconstitutional activities. Maria darrell, real quick, leading super pac working to elect joe biden launching multidollar initiative. Real quick, darrell, we have to jump. Unless we clean the rolls a lot of dead people will be voting and unfortunately theres a tendency for the vote to dead democratically. The democrats seem to have an advantage with those who have passed on. [laughter] maria okay. Tongue and check but i think this is a serious issue. Seriously voter fraud is a challenge when you expand dramatically without cleaning the roles properly. Maria all right. We will be watching, darrell issa, we will be right back, thanks, darrell. Maria welcome back, no mask, no entry, Walmart Kroger kohls and sams club joining the growing list of Companies Requiring customers to cover their faces as coronavirus cases spike across the country. The National Retail federation is now pushing for a nationwide mask policy saying this, shopping in a store is a privilege, not a right, if a customer refuses to adhere to store policies, they are putting employees and other customers at undo rest. Mark, tenner whats your take on this, masks can become policy. Unfortunately im not a big fan but im not sure the governor demanded it, now i was just in Newport Beach for a few weeks for Family Vacation and they were already doing it everywhere even outside, restaurants were only outdoor seating. I think the issue here is i think people may be willing to do this for a finite period of time but if this becomes an indefinite mandate where theres no end in sight, people will eventually revolt. Nobody wants to do this forever. People want to live their lives. Maria yeah, miami the latest state to require it, their requiring facial coverings, youre getting so much pushback saying youre impacted my rights. Liz its ridiculous this has become political issues and i would say to Trump Supporters out there, this can be the most important thing you can do to reelect the president because people are scared of this surge in cases weve seen around the country. There is no proof that you or me wearing a mask on the sidewalk is going to make much of a difference but the truth is it could make a difference and so why not do it, if youre on a ranch and you have 30 acres, theres nobody around, fine, i get that, you dont have to wear a mask, otherwise, for heavens sake people, lets be sensible, lets try and stop the spread of this thing so the economy can reopen and fewer people get sick and die. This just seems elementary to me. Maria yeah, its unbelievable. Everything has changed. We will take a break, when we come back clamping down on hauwei, the Trump Administration tightening the hold on Chinese Telecom giant, the latest coming up. Secretary of state mike pompeo in an interview yesterday with the hill said that china will pay a price for covering up covid19 pandemic. This comes on the same day as the u. S. Announced visa restrictions on hauwei, another Chinese Technology company. Joining me right now Energy Secretary and the environment keith krach. Thank you very much for joining us. The state the president putting out more warnings there. Assess the situation for us, give us the biggest National Security issues around china . Well, i think theres a multiple of issues around, maria, and by the way thanks again for having me back on your show. I think what you have seen recently is human rights atrocities and you see that theres debt transparency all over the world and i think the citizens are waking up to chinas 3prong strategy of conceal and the pandemic is part of concealment of the virus and citizens in the world are realizing that supply chains are entangled and you also look at chinas socalled diplomacy which is coercion and seduction to get countries to do what they want them to do and then throw on top of that whats gone on in hong kong where the freedoms and autonomies have just been avis and theyve really stepped up their aggression. Maria yeah, keith, the Trump Administration is contemplating a possible travel ban for member offense the Chinese Communist party and the plan would limit travel to the United States for executives at Stateowned Enterprises and members of the Peoples Liberation army. How likely is this ban. We know has taken place in terms of the uighurs being locked up, over a million of them. The administration wants to go out to specific individuals behind these things. Maria, i dont want to get ahead of the president on this issue but i can tell you that we are Holding China accountable. Theyve attacked in hong kong freedoms of the press, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, rule of law, theyve attacked human rights and so we made the comment we will use all tools available and United States has taken strongest action of any country to protect those human rights and those freedoms and you would think that ccp would would be somewhat apologetic for what they have done with the virus and it should have never happened and i think this is a big issue and and we are dealing with that and we are seeing countries in the world joining us. Maria let me ask you, keith, do companies today understand the National Security risk . I mean, the chinese president xi jinping wrote to ceos and talking to ceos, urging them to be part of chinas economic expansion. In the letters of council xi jinping writes this, you have made correct choice putting down roots in china to seek development. Meanwhile you have Pension Funds and University Endowments invested in Chinese Companies through various emerging market index, some of these companies are are already on the sanction list, they are they are already being sanctioned for things like working with the uighurs, tracking the uighus, building equipment for the chinese military. Whats your take on communicating to american ceos who ag barr said to me a couple of weeks ago, they are interested in shortterm profit versus longterm issues of National Security. By the way, i also think that ceos and businesses around the world are also waking up. You know when i hosted secretary pompeo out in Silicon Valley for four days in january, one of the things we said is, you know, i said guys, look weve always said corporate responsibility, social responsibility, but its also National Security and i think they understand that chinas aggression is urgent threat to freedom all over the world but its also real urgent threat to businesses because they dont want to compete and they dont want to put them out of business and they are all free traders but they also understand when somebody doesnt play by the rules, the market is no longer free and i sent a letter to all ceos and boards across america based on whats going on. What i said, look, its incumbent on the board to deal with human rights and its also incumbent that you analyze your supply chain. For the financial institutions, i think its also incumbent to take a look at Chinese Companies that youre invested in, you know. Lets face it, the average bond holder in the United States has financed the bell road initiative. The surveillance state and i think its these boards and the ceos moral responsibility and fiduciary duty either to divest but at the very minimum to disclose and you see whats doing on in the stock market and this is a huge risk to american investors and disadvantages american businesses and, you know, its going to road our goal standards of financial markets. Maria well, its interesting because many of the companies that youre referring to, some of them trade on the new York Exchange like, you know, alibaba, et cetera, those companies are not tired follow the u. S. Accounting rules, so, you know, thats people didnt understand the story so the president has proposed that the thrift fund not invest in msci index which is home to Many Companies in that index or even if Railroad Workers 401 k plan. Do you think she would be able to stop the money from going into those indexes, real quick, keith. Well, by the way, i think educating everybody, i think at the end to have day the power is in is in the citizens because they can speak with their pocketbook and, you know, Chinese Companies dont have to the guy took 3 companies public, you know, thats not fair but thats my personal problem, but the danger is to those investors and i think i think you will see some movements in terms of University Endowments. I think Pension Funds because they are at risk and they are financing the surveillance state. Maria yeah. For sure. All right, keith, great to have you this morning. Thanks very much, coming back soon. Keith krach from the state department, good to see you as always. More Second Quarter earnings hitting the tape. We are getting Johnson Johnson right now, we are waiting on bank of america. We have beat on earnings per share, 27 cents, the company came at 1. 67, excuse me estimate was 1. 49. The revenue story miss here, 18. 3 billion, we were looking for 22. 0 we were looking for 17. 61 billion, it is a beat for j j and we are coming at 18. 3 billion. Again, we are looking at those numbers right now, we are waiting on bank of america, a couple of things are raising fullyear guidance for the year, they are also saying that their sales and earning per share guidance will be raised. They are giving us a range. Operational sales slightly down but overall really strong numbers coming in on j j, they are focused on advancing a vaccine which is key for investors right now to address the pandemic and, again, they are giving us a few more headlines and they are giving us more guidance. Sales declined a little bit on the operational side but overall worldwide sales for medical devices and for their products, maria, were strong, again, double beat for j j as you can see on your screen and we are waiting on bank of america, i will send it back to you. Maria all right, j j shares up half percent. J j has been rising on efforts toward a vaccine, another major milestone for that company. We will speak with the cfo of j j coming up. Coming up fleeing high taxes, i will be talking with the connecticut state treasurer on howie state is dealing with exodus of people because of the taxrate level. Have the glass or wine or ice cold beer, the medical study shedding light on the potential Health Benefits of drinking in moderation, yes, youre watching mornings with maria live on fox business. Maria welcome back, breaking news on bank of america earnings right now. Cheryl casone with the numbers, cheryl. Cheryl double beat, maria, estimate earnings per share 27 cents, they came in at 37, healthy beat on earnings per share. Stock slightly up and revenue slight beat as well. 22. 011 billion, they came in at 23. 3 billion, they are set ago side 5. 1 billion for potential credit losses, so this is a company that is talking about the 5. 1 billion as a provision in case there are credit losses and theres within that theres a 4 billiondollar reserve bill. This is some of the things that we saw banks tell us in the last quarter, we are seeing that once again as well. Looking for trading revenue data which i dont quite see yet but i will tell you that loan and lease balances in a lot of Business Segments rising 96 billion, thats 11 , thats not too bad. Also they have right now, they ended the quarter record deposits 1. 7 trillion, but they are talking about the reserve bill, they are talking about covid19 and the pandemic and the economy and saying basically this reserve is because of a weaker Economic Outlook related to covid19, bofa unchanged. Maria all of the banks have been setting aside increased money just in case you see a loan default later on we will be watching that. It is now down 3 quarters of a percent. Tax money moves, americans increasing leaving hightaxed states like new york and connecticut for Greener Pastures with lower tax burdens like texas, florida and nevada, but what about the states they are leaving behind, how are they handling the exodus. Joining me right now sean wooden, great to have you this morning. Thank you very much for being here. Connecticut has had fair share of budget problems even before this pandemic. Can you give us the state of affairs right now in terms of connecticut and what youre seeing with money leaving the state and what that means for the budget . Yeah, so connecticut, we have a beautiful state with lots of great things to offer, the tax discussion has been a longstanding one and a necessary one in our state. With that said, we have some of the highestquality schools and communities, there are lots of reasons to be in connecticut and lots of things that our resources go to fund Higher Quality of life. Some of the places you mentioned, i assure you connecticut residents are not fleeing to florida right now. For example, in fact, as you may have reported on theres an influx of people relocating to connecticut as we speak thats in part driven by the states strong management around covid19 and the fact that we are one of two states that have seen a steady decline in the number of covid19 cases and so that type of sound management following Public Health officials and the science towards our reopening are very strong indicators and show what a great state we have. Maria yeah, its a great point that you make because people are leaving new york city for the suburbs and that has actually helped connecticut and do you think thats going to be a longstanding situation . Will people leave one state and and stay in connecticut because of these worries over covid . I think so. When you see home purchases that gives you an indication that its longer than renting a house for a month and that maybe the shift will be more long lasting and i think we will see a lot of shifts out of this pandemic in terms of way of business is conducted, the way people live, yes. I think its longer term. Maria sean, you wrote a great oped. Please come back soon, we appreciate your time, shawn wooden, we will be right been helping people weather storms. In say sharks red across the board, in asia, red across the board. The countrys economy expanded by 3. 2 in the quarter. As you see the shanghai composite was down 4 andahalf percent overnight. Joining the conversation, mark tepper, liz pete and matt schlapp. Great to see everybody this morning. Some of the top stories this morning, twitter is investigating a coote coordinatd attack, targeted several high profile accounts using the companys employee tools. Joe biden, former president obama, jeff bezos, warren buffet among those targeted, twitter accounts hacked with a link to a Bitcoin Wallet for users to send money with the promise of getting even more money back. Twitters ceo, jack dorsey, says the company will share everything it can when it knows more about the nature of this attack. And coronavirus deaths have now topped of 137,000 in the United States as cases near 3 andahalf million. The most of any country. The United States. The cdc reported nearly 61,000 new cases just yesterday alone. That was just in the United States. Nearly half of those came from florida, arizona and texas. All three states raising concerns over the lack of icu beds as hospitalizations once again grow. Starting today, mask mandates are in effect in alabama and in montana. In alabama, face coverings must be worn in public and when not social distancing. In montana, masks are required in certain indoor spaces and for Outdoor Activities as well. In georgia, the governor is banning cities and counties from requiring face coverings. Meanwhile, more retailers are requiring shoppers to wear masks in their stores kohls, kroger, walmart, sams club, mandating that face coverings are in place, beginning next week. Time for the word on wall street where we discuss whats driving markets and the economy. Joining me now is david balen, chief investment officer, jack ablin and mark tepper. Great to see everybody this morning. Weve got a selloff underway. Let me kick it off with this massive twitter hack, the social media platform hit with a wave of attacks on high profile accounts, the hackers posting tweets asking users to donate money to cryptocurrency accounts. Joe biden, president obama, bill gates, jeff bezos, elon musk were all targeted and the news is sending twitter shares lower in the premarket, a decline of about 6 right now. Your take . Mark. So i think twitters got a lot of issues. I actually own twitter because of the engagement. People log into facebook a few times a week, they log into twitter several times a day. My bigger issue with them is their suppression of conservative comments. I experienced that myself. I had a reply to one of my tweets that had the word liberal in it. It was a nice tweet. I couldnt see it in the normal thread. I had to hit the more replies to view it. The next issue is security and theres a ton of fake accounts and bots and stuff like that. Dual factor authentication is probably a must. Maybe they should limit one account per phone number. Its way too easy to create a bunch of fake email addresses. If they they dont start of to fix this stuff theyre going to lose credibility. I think its a must they attack this headon. Maria theyre going to lose credibility. Theyre mayb going to lose markt share. Were continuing to see parler increase in market share and its presence overall. Matt schlapp reported earlier that the president decided to make an announcement about a change in his campaign on parler, not on twitter. Next up, Bank Earnings this morning, bank of america reporting a double beat of Investor Expectations thanks to stronger than expected bond trading. Morgan stanley will report later this morning, rounding out earnings from the major dangs. Banks david, what do you see so far in terms of the backdrop for the financials . Well, overall very impressive. If you think about it, were in the worst quarter in terms of earnings for the coronavirus and were seeing really quite resilient strength in the banks and their Balance Sheets overall. And while were seeing a build of reserves for credit and you talked about that earlier, the fact is when we look at the actual data, the book value of the banks are actually going up to me, what that says is if this is the worst quarter, the banks in total have very strong Balance Sheets, theyre going to do very well over the course of the virus andhe pandecdec andndd r thilthy tth t be res. 4hene woo l bk b b8o8 24 ntmorohs nhs, n t, nse the arehe stoc thahaan pfo prett ptt llor cli for cten ps. I mean, the virus has had a the resurgence of the virus has slowed the acceleration of the u. S. Economy. The u. S. Is 4 of the worlds population and now more than 27 of the worlds pandemic cases. Its not been a good performance for us as a country and its definitely slowed down our of recovery. That said, we are still seeing pretty good resilience. What the investors are going to be looking at is whether or not theres another fiscal package that supports the economy between now and january 31st. If that occurs i think well see a reacceleration of the economy and that could be very good for investors. Maria yeah, and this weekend i spoke with certain senators who said theyre not going to leave again on august 8th without a fourth stimulus. So they leave for the Labor Day Holiday august 8th. He doesnt think its possible they leave without another stimulus. Finally, if we can believe the numbers out of china, economic recovery seems to have begun. Beijing reporting gdp growth of 3. 2 for the Second Quarter of 2020. Indicating a bounceback after covid19 caused the countrys first gdp decline since 1992. Jack, are you believing the ccp on these numbers . We just received. Were watching Energy Consumption as a major indicator here, right . Right. So exactly. Its part of my trust and verify with chinese data. What we look at is just try to verify overall growth with something a little more reliable and consistent, like electricity usage. And i will say, electricity usage up nearly 5 . So it is consistent with the 3. 2 that the country is reporting. Also, similarly last quarter we had a similar decline. So, yeah, i would say what were looking at which is consistent with what were seeing worldwide is what well call not necessarily a vshaped recovery but what i call is a radical recovery. Radical looks like a square root side, down, up, two thirds, three quarters of the way back and flattens out. About half of what china was enjoying going into this thing. Credit growth, mea meanwhile, up 13 , not quite getting as much juice out of every squeeze as they did several years ago. Maria well, thats the kind of radical that i like, thats for sure. Jack, real quick, in terms of the u. S. , were getting retail sales out this morning and were also of getting the jobless claims number in about an hour and 10 minutes. Has the recovery gun in the United States recovery begun in the United States . I believe it has. I do think when were taking two steps forward and one step back its going to be a little bit choppy. One of the things we track, which is kind of open table to offer daily data, shows for example a lot of retrenchment in reservations in some of the sunbelt states. So i would expect cases, for example, in florida, cases in texas to start rolling over. But i also expect growth to slow incrementally to the upside. So, yeah, its going to be a little bit choppy. Maria all right. Yeah. Because we saw good retail Sales Numbers last time around and we saw good jobs numbers two months in a row, may was revised up and june, good numbers. So well see what todays numbers tell us. David, jack, thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. And mark tepper, youre with us the rest of the morning. Thank you, gentlemen. Great word on wall street this morning. Coming up, Johnson Johnsons chief Financial Officer joe wolf is coming up on the companys quarterly results. We have Morgan Stanley earnings out right now. The company reporting a beat on revenue. Lets get right to Cheryl Casone with the numbers. Cheryl. Cheryl earnings per share, maria, this is a double beat. This is the last of the big six banks were going to hear from this week. Estimate was a buck 12 for earnings per share, 1. 96 they came in, very strong. Revenue estimate was 10. 31 billion. 13. 4 billion. And as im watching more of this, more of the headlines crossing, looks like a lot of this was because of the volatility in the market. Morgan stanley has the largest Stock Trading Division in the world. Theyve got the largest portfolio. The trading revenue coming from the volatility in the market really helped them. Looking for trading net he revenues which came in weaker. But if you look at the fixed income, trading net revenues, very strong. More than 3 billion versus 1. 13 billion. So again, were going to look for any comments from ceo james goreman and any updates on the etrade acquisition which is supposed to close in the Fourth Quarter. Theres Morgan Stanley and the stock is up more than half a percent, double beat, Morgan Stanley. Back to you. Maria all right. Great. We will wait for more info from the ceo, as you mentioned, cheryl. Thank you. Johnson johnson also reporting better than expected Second Quarter earnings in the last hour. The Company Beat Expectations and raised full year sales and Earnings Guidance even though profits were down sharply. The stock is edging higher in the premarc premarket. Joining me is the chief Financial Officer of Johnson Johnson, joe wolk. Thank you for joining us. Appreciate your interesting in Johnson Johnson. Maria j j for the quarter, we have seen nonurgent procedures, elective surgery put aside amid the covid19 disaster. Is that what was a major issue for the company, seeing a decline year over year . Tell us what drove the quarter, joe. Yeah, so that is precisely it, maria. If you look at our medical device unit, we had thought at the end of march, early april that procedures, specifically elective ones, as you referenced, could be down anywhere from 40 to 60 . That came in year on year down about 30 to 35 . So much better than what we had feared. As we saw economies open of up a little bit sooner, hospitals adapted to that. They were able to perform elective procedures at a little bit quicker rate than what we anticipated last quarter. And so were watching with guarded optimism as we see some rises in cases throughout some parts of the country, and across the globe. But we do think it was a good reason to raise our guidance in terms of ill call it guarded optimism. Our pharmaceutical business continued to perform very well although we did see a decline in Office Visits and physician administered drugs and then our consumer business, brands like tylenol and listerine continue to do extremely well in this environment. Maria okay. Because people cannot put off those operations forever, right . So of do you have any visibility into the next quarter that you think people are going to be going back to get those hip and knee replacements for the medical device part of the business, joe . Yeah, so the nice part about the quarter, maria, is that we saw our best month, although it was down in medical devices, was in june. So a good 10 to 15 points below each of our of platforms. It was better in june than it was for the quarter. So we think thats a very good, healthy sign. Again, were monitoring the case count and the rise in cases but we think that in many discussions with hospital administrators, their preparedness is much better than it was attend of march and early april so we feel theres a good way to navigate this going forward. Maria all right. Let me ask you about the drug business and oncology, you continue to report strong data, increased potential for several drugs there, immunology as well, looking very well positioned. But our audience wants to know about the human trials of the experimental Coronavirus Vaccine this month. What can you tell us, joe . Weve made a lot of progress since we announced our lead candidate on march 30th. We will be publishing very shortly in a prestigious scientific journal the results of our preclinical data. We have enough confidence in the data to start human trials next wednesday. That will be a more than 1,000 person study, go from adults age 18 up through 65 and older. Were addressing the most vulnerable population and broad demographics across that group. We will be studying both a single dose as well as a prime boost dose as well. Were also in discussions with the National Institute of health to potentially move our phase three initiation to the end of september. So that would test the efficacy of the drug. So dr. Paul stopel and his team continue to beat every timeline we set out in the beginning of the development plan. Maria well, we are certainly wishing you the best of luck on that one and i know the foot traffic comes back in a big way once we do have a vaccine in place so its all connected there. Joe, its good to see you this morning. Thank you so much, sir. Thank you, maria. Maria well be right back. Apps are used everywhere. Except work. Why is that . Nypd officers including the chief of department were injured during a protest on the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday. Footage shows a man with a cane hitting the officers while they were making an arrest. This amid a sharp decline crime has been rising in the big apple. Matt, your thoughts . Matt yeah, you know whats amazing, when black lives Matter Incorporated first started messaging about defunding the police some people were caught offguard that this was about racial harmony. What its really about is creating chaos in our cities. This chief who was beaten yesterday actually kneeled with the black lives matter incomp incorporated protesters previously. This shows these marxist leaders are not of good will. Theyre trying to sow the seeds of discord and cops are in the cross hairs. Maria cops are in the cross hairs because they dont have any support. Yes, please, jump in. The mayors and the governors are not backing the police. Look at these pictures. Go ahead, mark matt all the antipolice stuff has to stop. Defund the police has to stop. The Police Officers are here to protect us. We all need them from time to time. Imagine what society would look like without them. Its not very pretty. My brotherinlaw is a cop. He was called to a house last week and the newest trick theyre using is they call you into their house, the husband gets aggressive while the wife is recording everything, just so to see if the Police Respond and retaliate. Its ridiculous. Its a setup. Again, maria maria what were you going to say, liz . Liz we know how the story turns out. Theres ample evidence and weve all lived through periods where they really dumb down policing. A, its really bad for the economy because people get nervous and the reason people are moving to connecticut, yes, maybe the virus. Its also because new york all of a sudden is not a very safe place to live. It affects students coming to our universities here. It affects tourists coming to new york. This is a really bad idea. If cal california wants to adopt measures like that, fine. But in my hometown we know it doesnt work and the tragedy is the neighborhoods that are worst hurt are the neighborhoods that the these people are protesting to help, presumably. Black neighborhoods, low income neighborhoods. Thats where the damage is the most intense. Were already seeing people, leaders from those neighborhoods saying please dont do this, we are under attack and our kids are not safe. I mean, it is an appalling decision. Maria you know, the other day mayor de blasio put a tweet out, liz, and everybody, mark, matt, and the tweet basically said for anybody who tried to mess up our black lives matter mural, well, nice try. The department of transportation fixed it and, you know, your vandalizing did not work. He was so worried about the black lives matter being vandalized on fifth avenue but no comment whatsoever about half the city is all boarded up because it was vandalized. I mean, its amazing to me. Its possibly the worst mayor in history. Maria sorry, go ahead, mark. Mark hes afending the wrong defending the wrong causes. He should stick up for the police. Police defend our personal liberties, our freedom. Without them, this society would not look promising at all. I dont know what hes doing. The guys clueless. Maria this bloody picture, liz, thats the department head. Hes the department head. Look at him. Assaulted. Liz look. I mean, we just have to have more pushback from new yorkers. I have been calling for a rally to support the police. I would go to a rally showing support for our police. I dont know why no one has mustered the energy to do that. Because i think de blasio needs to know most of us are not onboard with his policies and by the way, when youre trying to get billions of dollars of help from the federal government, having this black lives matter painted in front of trump to you you wear, how trump tower, how stupid is that . [ laughter ] maria yeah. And i mean, to waste all that money and time to paint on the street rather than using those resources to fix up what is a badly damaged city, its really a shame. Well take a break. When we come back were talking travel with the ceo of delta, ed bastian will be here, next, on earnings and how the airline plans to bounceback from coronavirus lockdowns. Dont miss it. Stay with us. Maria welcome back. Good thursday morning, everybody. Thanks so much for joining us. Im maria bartiromo. It is thursday, july 16. A look at markets right now at 7 33 a. M. On the east coast. Futures are in the red but off of the lows of the morning. The dow futures are down 151 points, nasdaq down 124, the s p is down 18. We are standing by for retail sales data and initial jobless claims. Theyre out in one hours time, 8 30 a. M. Eastern, giving us another window into where we are in the recovery in the u. S. Economy. Stocks posting gains yesterday. There was investor optimism over Coronavirus Vaccines and that pushed markets into the green. The dow closing higher for a fourth session in a row. The nasdaq was up 62 and the s p was up 29 yesterday. This morning european markets are on the decline. We are waiting on the ecb decision. The ecb press release will be out in 10 minutes time at 7 45 a. M. Eastern. We are expecting that the ecb will hold Interest Rates unchanged. The meeting is certainly a market mover. European indices are down ahead of the news. The cac is down 32, the dax index down 66. Stay with us on this. Well get that news in 10 minutes time. We could see a move in these markets. In asia overnight red across the board. The Chinese Government released data which shows the economy expanding in the Second Quarter. It grew by 3. 2 after contracting nearly 7 in the first quarter. If you believe these numbers, the recovery is beginning in china as well. But the shanghai composite was down 4 andahalf percent overnight. Covid19 impact on air travel, Delta Airlines reporting Second Quarter earnings this week further solidifying the crippling effect of the coronavirus pandemic on the airline industry. The Company Posted a Quarterly Earnings loss of 4. 43 a share. This coming amid heightened concerns over furloughs and layoffs hitting the industry. American airlines issued warnings to 25,000 employees of potential furloughs and Southwest Airlines saying bookings need to triple by the fall. Airlines are prohibited from laying off workers until octobef federal Coronavirus Relief. Joining me right now is the ceo of delta airline, ed bastian is with us. Ed, it is great to see you this morning. Thanks so much for joining me. Good to see you. Maria look, this is a tough time. We know that. What have you been doing, ed, to potentially avoid layoffs . I know that youve got major cost consciousness all over and youve already taken a fair amount of cost out of the business. To avoid layoffs. Sure. One of the things we said at the beginning of the pandemic was that if we could avoid layoffs, certainly minimize layoffs, that would be a real testament to the strength of the company and the culture and our people and i think weve got a real shot at doing just that. Absolutely only a minimum level of furloughs, and i think weve got a shot at having no furloughs once we get to the october 1st date. We are finishing up an Early Retirement Program with our people here, the month of july. We had over 17,000 of our people subscribe to it. Thats 20 of the workforce, voluntarily agreeing to retire and on top of that we have monthly leaves of absence, unpaid leaves of absence in the current month we have over 40,000 people on those and we have thousands more that will continue over the fours of the fall. The delta people are stepping up and making a great sacrifice and as we try to down size the airline in the face of the pandemic. Maria youre handling all of this great with terrific leadership, ed. But i know youve already made impressive progress on cutting costs, total cut cutting total operating expense by more than 50 in the june quarter. Youre expecting that to sustain through yearend . What does that do to cash burn, ed . Well, cash burn is the one and only metric were measuring these days in the industry. When the pandemic started, we were close to 100 million a day that we were burning cash. Which immediately stopped. The team has gotten it to the point where in the month of june were down to 2 27 million a d, a 70 reduction in 90 days, a lot of it driven on the cost side, 50 reduction, great sacrifices by all of our people across the country. Our goal is to eliminate that cash burn by the end of the year. We have some work to do to take that 27 million down to zero. But based on the success weve had to date, i feel cautiously optimistic well get there. Maria so you do think that youll be able to achieve the breakeven cash burn by yearend, and tell me about the liquidity progress that youve made already in terms of the liquidity position. Weve raised a significant amount of liquidity since the start of the year. We raised 14 billion in cash and we closed the june quarter with 16 billion in the bank. So we knew the recovery was going to be difficult to predict. It was going to be really a lot out of our control. It was going to be based on the containment of the virus and when the virus has areas weve seen the best in containing the virus such as the month of june down here in the south, we saw some nice traffic and revenues pick up. But as the virus has grown, demand has stalled out any additional growth. We knew we needed a large cash reserve. We have that. We have about 19 months, assuming no recovery or no improvementings from here, improvements from here, no additional cash to be raised, were working on all those. Deltas in good shape. Tough shape but were financially in good shape to avoid the worst case outcomes. Maria then the question becomes the demand side of the equation. In order to meet those cash burn targets you need to see demand, in order to see demand we need to see confidence on getting on a plane again. Youre taking a lot of safety measures. Delta announcing that you will keep the middle seat empty on your aircraft through at least september 30th. Youre requiring face coverings for all employees and passengers on flights. Your competitors, american and united have limited capacity on aircraft. But still have the middle seat available. Ed, how long can you keep that middle seat empty . What is the Economic Cost of eliminating that middle seat . But thats the kind of thing that brings confidence and gets you to get on a plane again, right . Thats our top priority is restoring confidence in consumers and travel. We want our customers to feel as confident in their health as they do the Flight Safety that they typically expect when they board a delta flight. And we know that its not sustainable. We cant keep the middle seats blocked forever but until we see a significant pickup in confidence in travel, i think were going to keep that middle seat blocked. We committed to do it through the end of september and i indicated when we reported our results this week that were going to go beyond september. We dont have an exit date on that yet. But i would rather keep the middle seat blocked, add more seats, more planes, weve got a lot of planes on the ground that we can add back into the sky rather than trying to fill up and jam up the airplanes with every seat available. When consumers have confidence thats renewed back in travel, that will be our indication as to when its time to start selling the middle seat. But i think its too early. Teams done a reelly good job with really good job with all the safety protocols, the masks, filtration systems, every single flight before it goes down, wiping down the surfaces. So customers are telling us they feel very good about the experience on delta. In fact, we just got our june survey results back from our customers. Our surveys jumped 20 points in the month of june over june a year ago. So highest in our history. So the experience is very, very good. Anyone wanting of to travel, can feel safe in doing that on delta. Maria and youve got the highest margins in the industry as well, for the investor out there listening. How important has the Coronavirus Relief from the cares act been to the company during this pandemic . How have you used that money . Oh, its been huge. You know, were an international airline. We have investments in Certain Airlines around the world and what weve seen is any individual country where its government did not step up and support its local airlines theres been real challenges. With the cares act and kudos to the administration and all the leaders on capitol hill for having the foresight to put the airline employees at the front of the list in terms of knowing that the airlines are going to lead the recovery out of the virus and keep the employees in place has given us the opportunity to potentially get through this at delta with no furloughs. So its absolutely working. You know, again, i cannot express my appreciation on behalf of all our employees, giving that six months to understand and sort out what were seeing and then in an orderly fashion offer retirement programs, over voluntary leaves and work sharing and job sharing arrangements with our employees to make certain were in good shape on the back end of this, that were not decimated by the virus. Maria you mentioned in the quarter the writedowns of some of your investment partners, notably the latam and groupo aio mexico. When would you expect International Travel to come back, is that a 2021 affair. Its a 2021 affair, maria. Very much so. We thought here that its going to lag domestic by probably 12 months in scale and so id say anyone thats looking to go overseas, im optimistic that next summer will be a Good Opportunity to do that. But unfortunately, the summer plans that anyone has or the fall plans, its not going to work this year. Maria unbelievable. What a moment in time, ed. Have you ever seen anything like this . No, no, you know, we thought coming through 9 11 that that was a defining moment for this industry and it was, absolutely, for our society. This is 9 11 unfortunately on steroids. But we will get through it. Im confident. Im optimistic on the recovery. We saw some good growth in june. Were about 20 of our normal schedule this summer versus a year ago and if we can especially here in the south, if we can enact and use our masks and maintain social distance and wash our hands, the basic hygiene principles, we can get that curve down and that will be the indication to consumers that its safe to start moving again. We have to take care of our health first before we worry about travel. Maria just an extraordinary situation. Ed, thank you very much. Happy youre in the drivers seat at this moment in time. Well see you soon, sir. Ed bastian is the ceo of Delta Airlines. Well be right back. Maria welcome back. High profile twitter feeds hacked. Joe biden, bill gates, elon musk, jeff bezos, all among those targeted in a simultaneous attack yesterday. Hackers posted tweets soliciting donations via bitcoin, promising to double the money sent to a particular cryptocurrency wallet. Mark tepper, this was an extraordinary move and i think whats most extraordinary here is that twitter just told us that their employees can get into our accounts. Because thats how they did it. The hackers mark thats not good. Doesnt make me feel very safe. Maria the hackers hacked the employees to get into various peoples accounts to change the person that could operate the company. Not a twitter person. This bitcoin person. Now we know twitter can get in all of our accounts. Mark yeah. Well, i mean, they need to ramp up their security, internal and external. Look, theres been all this talk about new normal. This is the new normal when it comes to crime. I mean, it is absolutely crazy. But this is how people rob you now. They used to put a gun in your face. Now, they steal your Social Security number and take out credit cards in your name. Or they steal your twitter account. I mean, the fact that biden and musk and all these high profile people were part of this hack, it shows you it doesnt matter who you are, doesnt matter how smart you are, these criminals are professional criminals. Theyll get you. It can happen to you. So look, security needs to be ramped up within twitter. Maria the stock is reacting viethis morning, matt schlapp, e stock is down 4 andahalf percent. Heres what one twitter user writes today. Twitter just admitted that it has a tool that lets employees take control and use your account. Matt you know, it is shocking but i guess also not shocking. And i think this is the larger question beyond twitter. Clearly, twitter has a huge security problem but there is this question about all the search, the 90 of search thats done on google, the 90 of ecommerce thats done on google, these Big Tech Companies have so much information on each one of us individually, if they ever wanted to destroy us or bring us to our knees, they could. And theyre not on at least not on my side politically and i think all of us should be awfully careful what we do online. Maria well, this is why parler has been gaining market share. And we had the founder of parler on and he told us that accounts are going up significantly. They are taking market share. Well see what happens with this marketplace. Ill have my kids find those, maria. [ laughter ] maria heres the real buzz. A couple in pennsylvania thought they had water damage in their house of. It was actually fresh honey dripping down the walls, a colony of bees were living on the roof. Business, oh, my goodness. Liz i love this story. This actually happened to friends of mine out in south hampton. They came back after a winter away from their house and the whole house was humming. Well reopening america he seems job one right now, the country, coronavirus causing a major shakeup cross the country changing how we live changing everything, there is the optimism states are reopening plan schools to begin in two weeks time louisiana congressman House Minority whip Steve Scalise great to see you thanks for joining us. Always good to be back with you, maria. So most schools are not opening for about a month, so weve got a couple weeks weve got the beginning of starting to get back to school, but really, the school is supposed to open within about four weeks what is your take on schools open do you see children needing to go back this fall or do you think we need to watch the science . Children needing to back to school be in classroom with teachers maria, this is something 2that weve got to commit to doing it there are safe base i was with Vice President a few days ago in baton louj lsu, University System working together different protocol putting out so students can safe come back to school in louisiana, all of our post higher ed schools open k through 12 schools working on plans to reopen, every state needs to be putting together their plan, not saying of whether or not to do it but working to figure out how to do it safely, share that data with other states, but, ultimately, get it done because kids need to be in the classroom, we are seeing a lot of pediatric studies show damage done to children by not being able to go back to school, the end of semester last spring we got to work to get this done we can get it done, and that is where our focus needs to be. Maria so, congressman do you think this should be funds in this news stimulus badge to target schools in particular if they need help . You are going back a couple weeks then congress leaves again august in august. Do you think you will be able to get another you stimulus badge done before you leave for the next recess . I know there are a lot of negotiations and whether or not there will be another package, is still yet to be determined. But you know look whatever we do has to continue to be focused on 4ing people safely get back to work, helping schools safely reopen there are a lot of federal dollars hundreds of billions federal dollars still out there, that weve already appropriated, it may be reallocation, or continuing tweak like what we did with ppp, a few weeks ago. Where we took existing money made it more flexible for businesses something we can look at more choice for kids in education if schools not reopening, there are other schools that are reopening, they ought to have that flexibility, so that parents, can send kids to a school that is going to be able to safely take care of their kid, and there are a lot of other reasons why schools need to reopen not just for the educational help of those kids but there is a lot of mental health, that is involved in it. And then you also youve got parents that are working sending kids to school, you are also making it harder for those parents to go back to work, as well, so there are a lot of reasons we need to say, look this country has done great things weve taken on many challenges in the past tackled them said figure out how get it done not whether or not to get it done, that is our what ourtude has to be, we have to serve our children, we have to be focused on serving them would it be a copout to say it is too hard so we are just going to have kids stay sat Home Learning again that is not that is not an acceptable answer. How will voters congressman how will voters react to this we are on count don november election 100 days now polls jog majority voters backing former Vice President joe biden leading President Trump 11 points a lifts the wall street journal nbc news poll 15 in lateest quinnipiac poll trumps approval tolerating 6 biden came out with economic plan this week, it was about, issue raising taxes, spending two trillion dollars on green plan, if Elizabeth Warren says Economic Voice likely a wealth tax as well so anything enough the bank you are also getting taxed are people responding to this . A well, thank goodness joe biden is going to have to come out of the basement some point let people know what he would do as president because the contrast has never been sharper what President Trump did, issue to take an economy that was sluggish because of the biden policies turn it around make it hottest economy in the world, President Trump did it once, we are obviously, at different place because of covid19 but who better to bring that economy back than President Trump look at what joe biden, with emergency plan you know energy as well as anybody we had a great energy plan we were one of the dominant leader in Energy Production before covid we are going to be again by the way, joe bidens plan brings us back to those policies of 10 years ago and i called it on steroids joe biden was father of failed 5 a 35milliondollar taxpayer subsidy to Energy Company that failed because corona capitalism at worst that is is what joe biden wants to do not with 500 Million Dollars of tax dollars but with two trillion dollars that is not direction we need Higher Energy costs not what we need President Trump has proven record on energy and economy, frankly the economy, maria i think is going to still be the biggest issue, come november not today, we are focused on getting through this pandemic, the president has done with the president has done with operation warp speed closer than ever not only they are pooez but a vaccine possibly ready never unheard of any kind of disease, to be this close, because of what President Trump has done with operation warp speed. The yeah, congressman i want to ask about mailin voting a super pac working to elect joe biden has launched a 24milliondollar initiative to boost vote by mail in swing states that same Group Already announced 32milliondollar effort, to be registry new voters your thoughts on mailin voters how much of this election will be mailin . I think are seeing an increased participation in mailin voting every state gives voters a lot of options to vote but i still see a lot of desire store people to want to in person vote there is just something unique about going to polls going into the voting booth casting your vote, that option, ought to be there for people as well, so, you know this is america we like choices but, ultimately, i think you are going to see a large numbers of people, participate in this election, i think you have by the way, 8 million trump voters did not show up two years ago because donald trump wasnt on ballot going to show up in this election, that is going to bode well for President Trump, and Vice President pences reelection, and look those people are for got withen men and women in states like he pennsylvania joe biden wants to ban fracking not only Elizabeth Warren heading up economic plan with all of this class warfare built aoc, healeding up energy plan, with things like the Green New Deal solar peoples on airplanes all this foolishness. I have wonder if he wanted to name aoc environmental head, because i mean obviously, they all want jobs, in the campaign Elizabeth Warren, wants to be treasury secretary, so people joe biden ought to name secretaries show who he would have running government good being with you. Yes, exactly, so people understand, the administration that they are getting congressman Steve Scalise good to see you, sir take good care quick break a lot more coming up looking at market awaiting initial jobless claims real sales due out 15 minutes time could be Market Movers a blocking spree underway for model cristy teesen cut off people from twitter, you are watching mornings with maria, live on fox business. M. Eastern, joining me right now to talk about state of business, today is usa ceo john, it is a pleasure to see you. Thank you so much for being here. Maria thank you so much for having me. Characterize what you are seeing right now in terms of your own employees, and your own customers, working from home, is it working . Have can when are you expecting us to go back to normalization . Well you know maria. Paribas in United States, weve been mostly working from home, observe the offer 90 staff is still working from home, however, weve started, asking some of our colleagues to come back the ones who work in the key critical areas like general trading clearing, and payments, but going to be very gradual, we started phase one 10 days ago you know this pretty well, we ask people to be tested we test all staff to come back, we have do cleaning, if the upper take you to the floor, trading floors all people as well plexglass, dont have enter mingling across the floor we respect are social distancing wear a mask dont expect more than 15 staff back in corporate oufs over summer month and then based on pandemic yeah, it depends what is state of business, weve heard from colleagues in the Banking Sector talking about, increasing number of dollars aside for loan loses they are expecting later in the year what is your take on all of that . Can you assess your own business right now in that regard . Well, as you know maria i am in the until we publish or research by month end i can give you a sens what i see the Banking Sector, and paribas very active supporting clients when activity very high because clients have been very, very busy, just to give you a sense, in europe, a home of bnp paribas we extended 200 billion financing to european clients, equity markets, with 60 loans indicated market there and over 50 of the high rate bond markets, you know this is the activity experiencing here in the United States, we followed exactly the same trend, supporting corporate clients, funding, access to get to markets, as well as, a times of just weve been very active advising on hedging strategies. Let me ask you this ecb to keep Interest Rates unchanged this morning, emergency coronaviruss Stimulus Program unchanged, monitors the economic strength of the eurozone all monitoring how business is changing i want to get your take on real estate, this is also an important point, in terms of your own business, people feel that with real estate is going to change, people will not wanting to into highrise buildings a lot of commercial real estate on cutting room floor how do you see real estate right now . Well, you know it is really what youve been covering in your show combination of pandemic digitization of economy of business is really leading businesses across you know all verticals, to make some significant adjustment, and some of these things will be longstanding what we just discussed working from home, about probably here to stay, it is beneficial to employees, as you know, commuting, more in communities, we have been extremely efficient doing so, then the consequence of that we see, will commercial real estate, footprints from conference in the events in areas to significant, trend the trend has to be mentioned is business traveling. As weve been doing so much digitally including today i wish i was in your studio like we always do facetoface i love that, but it has been quite efficient, then, companies will look at business traveling in a very different way, and twice before flying understanding we can do things very effectively. All right. Thank you your colleagues for supporting liquidity as you are, 150 billion plus loans out the door, it is good to see you this morning sir thank you so much ceo of bnp paribas, we will be right back. Maria welcome back mailin ballot worries u. S. Postal service scrambling to fix issues to prepare for election in about november sending advice check lists across the country recommending voters request ballots no later than 15 days ahead of election sending them in a week ahead of time matt will these be enough to avoid fraud ag barr says this opens door to massive fraud. That is right nothing wrong with voting by mail can when with individual requests absentee or early vote because they have, accused of abs from voting election about day you can show up to vote in person the on as the of that they are pushing in about states every name on rolls pushing them ability to vote by mail saying they must vote by mail these are dirty filled with fraud, this will put the whole question about the election results, with big question mark. Maria weve got Economic Data on the other side of this break jobless claims retail sales right after this. Stay with us. Maria welcome back, good thursday morning. Thanks so much for joining us. Im maria bartiromo. Offu thursday, july 16, we are standing by for initial jobless claims retail sales take a look at markets ahead of breaking news numbers this morning it is adjustment before 8 30 a. M. East coast dow industrials right now down 161 points this is pretty much near lows of the morning, the neas deck futures down 125, issue the s p futures down 20 points right now, the numbers that we are looking at, encapsulate week in terms of Unemployment Benefits and last month, in terms of retail sales, the retail sales expectation gain for month 5 much better than expected right to Cheryl Casone with the numbers, we are looking at very strong retail sales report this morning. Cheryl we are i am going to start with that stronger than expected second behavings report we got for the week for monthovermonth the estimate was for jump 5 we got 7 1 2 jump for june retail sales that is is very strong, strip out autos estimate was jump 5 we got 7 there, also saying, 7 versus 77 1 2 versus 5 , this is not as strong as may i wrant to be clear we got 17. 7 , for the month of may we are not getting back to that blockbuster number that we had last month, also, we are looking at initial jobless claims coming through, right now are maria for the weekly initial job claims estimate for 1. 25 million we are coming in 1. 3 million, so a little bit of a gain, that means, that we are down from the prior actually in line with prior number from last week, so this may not be fall so much might be really in line, this now takes us well above 50 million for initial jobless claims since we got those in midmarch, we are now, again, this is another 1. 3 million on top of 49. 98 million we already had looking back, to continuing claims, we are looking at a 17. 33 million number for continuing claims, that is a little bit are better than coupled continuing 17 for 6 million 17. 33 continuing claims week ending july 4th estimates that is kind of towards the top end of the reaping i want to say looking at again, the initial claims, almost top end of the range from economist are Getting Better at this i got to say at this point, looking at the philadelphia fed, by the way, going throw throw in for july better than coupled, 24. 1, the estimate for 20, this is manufacturing eastern pennsylvania delaware, south jersey, so again, we are looking at numbers a slight reinvention for the week ending july 4, 1. 31 million initial claims a lot of data is crossing mar prea as you can see a little bit of a loss, on not a big one not Economic Data that we just through at all viewers i got to say markets kind of holding on where we are at but, again, retail sales a big one, big one, for today, that we were looking at much better than expected maria. All right cheryl as you so much 7 1 2 you would have thought would have improved market in fact we are seeing worsening, dow futures down 180 points nasdaq down 134 s p down 21 joining me right now allianz chief economic adviser Mohamed Elerian always a pleasure to see you your reaction to this Economic Data that we are getting, this morning, 7 1 2 retail sales, certainly makes you feel like we are in recovery mode when it comes to retail, and jobs. Yes maria these numbers shows you both what is possible, and what we should be worried about, possible came from retail sales this economy can take off, very quickly. If it has a green light but, unfortunately, that is june data july dedicate is not going to be as good. Why . We know certain states either halted reopening or went back we are starting to pick that up in these jobless claims, jobless claims we should worry about number came in higher than expected didnt recoup from last week i worry that next week maybe even worse, so, you know on one hand there is a lot to hope for, if we get the hotel issue right on the other hand too earl to feel comfortable the unemployment problem is still there. Maria so you know larry kudlow joined me a couple weeks ago, said that we should expect a 20 growth story for second half of the year do you believe that do you think we will see a snapback in third and a furthering quarter . It all depends on health worried about two things one inability to open up in healthy manner when means we are like pendulum swinging around trying to confined equillip brum point to live with covid unfortunately, that what is we have to do until a vaccine or Community Immunity the second thing Big Companies getting announcement after announcement of Big Companies looking to lay off people, yesterday was American Airlines, 25,000, i am worried that we are going to migrate up in layoffs on the small and Medium Sizes Companies i would hope for what larry is talking about but i think going to be heavy going for a while unfortunately. Maria let me bring in mark tepper go ahead mark. Hey mohamed, so i read your comments about this being a liquidity driven rally and how dangerous that could be. And the Retail Investors really being front and center. How much are apps like robin hooded apps like that impact what we are seeing in the market right now . A huge way, mark. And in two ways. One is therapy using barrier to entry you can buy 5 dollars, you can buy, a small proportion of lots of shares so we are reducing the barriers to Retail Investors and secondly, what to think about is talking to millennials in a way that they like being talked about to. Dont get me wrong. It is a good thing that we get broader retail participation we want this market to be he deeper we want society to have a buyin to the market system i worry a little bit chasing market higher and higher home i will be wrong the last thing we want is a whole new sket of investors getting burnt in their first entry into the market about. Maria that has never seen a he selloff never seen a a recession, what do you think is going on with markets recently . I mean even with the cautious news on the pandemic, mohamed, we are near record highs and, yet, this morning, we get good news, on retail sales we see market worsen down almost 200 points right here are. Yeah, daytoday is hard, but i think maria a step back two very strong factors in play, one is the ability to look through the short term, and the hope that vaccine is coming the u. S. Economy can come back quickly, the second is just liquidity, Central Bank Liquidity and today we heard from ecb, that they are going to be flatout still, the fed is giving every indication, that it you will be supportive of market liquidity. And Retail Investors, so i think this have as liquidity driven market. It is hoping for a destination that comes rather quickly that is what i am worried about, so the big question is going to be do we have enough liquidity to continue ignoring tougher economic corporate fundamentals . Sure, liz peek. Is if, a question i am struck by the fact, that almost every read on the economy, whether sw ask and have Consumer Sentiment or pmi numbers or todays retail seals are also a better than expected, at least over the last couple months, that has been the case. I would think that means that earnings also, for the Second Quarter are going to be better than expected terrible probably yes, but better than expected, wont that help the market . Of it should help the market you are getting two phenomenon onlima you march april slit hard underestimated how hard that hit was. Mayjune bounced back much faster that people expected the arrow on both sides i think that has to do with models that are not able to capture this historic shock. In terms of earnings my gut feeling is that we are going to look through them again, we are going to say unfortunately these are these days a lot happens from one day to another as you report so well every day. So, i think the market is going to say that is great, yes, it is better than expected but what about the Third Quarter what about the Fourth Quarter . Yeah, so how do you want to allocate capital amidst all this uncertainty . You know the last three to four weeks, i have been cautious and wrong i have been cautious, because despite there being some really attractive companies in terms of fees, and by that i maintain strong Balance Sheets, the world is will coming to them, this seems good valuations are high so i have been overlycautious, and i remain cautious because of valuations dont get me wrong there is a lot to like in various companies here just that valuations have gone really far really fast. Maria yep for sure mohamed great to get your insights this morning thanks so much, sir, good to see you. Thank you for having me. Thank you. So a thank you mohamed, mohamed he will areian pour yourself another glass happy hour may actually be good for your health we are going to take a look that the super Model Chrissy Teigen cut off one million twitter users what sparked this blocking streak you are watching mornings with maria live on fox business. Cant get you off my mind. Maria welcome back. Happy hour may be good for your health now we are large, a new study from university of georgia finds low to moderate Alcohol Consumption can help prevent cognitive deadline joining is doctor jennifer fer great to see what you did you make of this study talking about it all morning getting on it wanting your advice here. Absolutely i indefinitely think interesting study alcohol has a mixed relationship with signs on health for stlur have been many studies that have been suggesteding that alcohol excessive alcohol can be problematic to health in terms of ub cardiovascular disease studies it can be helpful, this study wanted to see what deal is, by the way, should i stay there have been studies said no, it doesnt help with cognition that is why i say mixed references look at 20,000 people maintain age 61 years old followed nine easier asked about drinking habits about questions that would assess how well they think and remember things like that, about what researchers found was that, compared to nondrinkers, those who were low to moderate drinksers had better cognitive scores in terms of memory things like that had a lower rate of decline, of cognition as well this study seems to suggest it can be potentially beneficial to cognition. All right matt schlapp wants in. Yeah, i think part of the frustration, americans people around the globe have with medical science generally seems like studies that show one side and the other side. How many years into the future will we understand what could have stopped coronavirus, a similar kind of dynamic studies tell us what we bid helpful harmful you will. That is excellent concern how long is it going to take to understand what is going on i can tell you on the ground part of many physicians groups closing we talk all the time advances in information we gather from covid putting into use on daily basis, so in real time, this disease is being studied there are studies literally coming out of italy other countries, our own country, we have seen many of them, so we are working fooef richley to get as much as we possibly can i will say this is taking a long time to understand the, one thing i need to say regarding that one of the reasons information about how many cases we have, where they are who happening, and that information needs to be transparent available to the public, we need Public Access to this information to really be able to study it so that we learn as quickly as possible about this disease. Of the. Maria radio yeah, it is a really good point, we have been taking all morning about aging, women and men, dont age you know they just age differently, dont age the same, so also changing, according to one way or another in the the wall street journal, talk to us about how men and with many a age differently. Women and men are not the same, and many ways we are very, very different also with aging as well we ne first of all, women tend to outlive men, but there have been studies over the years suggest that that men and women have different immune functions, different brain functions, other systems cellular structure to be different between two with covid bringing that into the picture we have also seen, studies data suggested covid may be more swlefrl were several affected a gender different with realtime disease dealing with covid we know social cultural environmental factors into gernz, age men and women seem different roles different soetsdz probably makes a difference as well, i think for me are what is really important for to us take home from this is that men and women are not the same, we are different, there are gender related Health Differences another reason we need as many with women as we have men in studies that we have, and the Clinical Trials studying men and woman so we fully understand the differences that men and women have men and women are definitely not the same. If the men and women are exercising the same eating the same you are saying tickle outlivemen you just said something about covid. Did you say that men are more susceptible to covid than women . Men have typically according to data that we have the study weve had so far in covid, we know that men tend more he severely affected by covid than women yes, you are right statistically a fact women live longer than men life span of women longer a statistically fact macroissues the microissues cellular structure things like that different, but studyinging this, it is why we need gender equality in studies to understand how men and women are different how we are alike. And how we are behaving in terms of health, and our healthy living, eating, exercising whether or not changes that equation also with exploring always a pleasure thank you very much great to talk with you this morning see you soon superModel Chrissy Teigen cutting off one million twitter users what sparked the blocking spree right after the break. Stay with us. Hike Simon Pagenaud takes the lead at the indy 500 coming to the green flag, racing at daytona. Theyre off. In the kentucky derby. Rory mcllroy is a two time champion at east lake. Welcome back fox business alert ecb president Christine Lagarde holding a News Conference after the central bank statistician to keep Interest Rates the stimulus unchanged lagarde says she sees economy nu rebounding Third Quarter but uncertainty about strength of recovery remains high is expecting growth in the Third Quarter. The market are pretty much unchanged ft 100 down 27 cac quarante down 35 dax down 71 expecting a decline on wall street, about 200 points from opening bell in about 35 minutes, a massive twitter hack not only issue for social media giant this morning, superModel Chrissy Teigen blocked more than a million users yesterday deleted more than 60,000 own tweets overhaul coming after she said she was get with harassed because of spir theories linking her to Jeffrey Epstein she is denying all he allegations said never met ep epstein never been on island or jet another example of issues issues on platform we have been talking about all morning with ma that massive compact. Exactly right once something takes off on social media start to attack you rather scary thing, i think when you are the subject of these attacks, especially things like cancel culture you find yourself realizing being too attached toed to social media platform is actually ininjurious to your health. Twitter shares back down 7 early on now you are look at decline 4 mark tepper i said earlier i will say again, what happened with this hack, basically told us twitter has the tools to allow its employees to control our accounts, that means shadowed banning Everything Else they told is that is how hack happened took control of the person were who could operate yourures user accounts. If they decide speaking on my behalf my voice of profiles i have a big issue huge from the twister perspective probably why parler is gaining so much popularity back to Chrissy Teigen thing i get it i have been attacked on twitter i dont have nearly as many followers god forbid i say tesla stock price expensive controls come out quick come out hard it is really easy to attack somebody, whenure a faceless coward you are not tied to your own personal account this is too many fake accounts out there way too many bots theyve got to go. Some are fake, elizabeth but, you know, there is also about social media mob mentality, the mob comes at you when you Say Something they dont agree with some are bots i agree with that but not all not all robots, elizabeth. I think that is exactly right, maria, what is amazing to me is that apparently has removed some million followers i dont know i have no idea how you do that how do you identify a million followers, that you can remove i can remove 10 if i dont like when they say look, a little bit people have gotten too enamored having a social Media Presence that is when it comes more important than life, right . And i think you kind of have to take the lumps if you are going to be that sort of endemic to twitter followers involved with them things like this can happen not good but it is going to happen. Maria for sure more mornings with maria live on fox business right after this. Maria thank you. Great show, everybody. Thanks for being here. Have a great day, everybody. Varney Company Begins right now. Stu, take it away. Stuart good morning, maria. Good morning, everyone. As the economy emerges from the covid depression, two indicators for you.
