Coverage for you. Blake burman at the white house. Lauren simonetti watching those markets and Hillary Vaughn is is in washington but we begin with blake. Reporter ashley, Republican Convention next three nights as they see it, continue to draw the distinction between President Trumps vision of the future and joe bidens vision of the future. Tonight will have a bit of a family feel to it as well, as two of the president s children will speak later this evening, tiffany trump, and eric trump and the keynote address will be given by the first lady from the newlydecorated rose garden. Melania trumps chief of staff says the first lady will talk about her role as a mother and a look ahead to the potential second term. Her speech tonight will be very positive and uplifting which is her signature. She wants to look forward. She wants to talk about what she as first lady plans to do when the president wins another four years. She also wants to lay out for the American People while, why it is so important that the president become reelected. Reporter also speaking tonight, secretary of state mike pompeo will be addressing the rnc from overseas. There are questions about that decision. Pompeo will be delivering his remarks from israel. Nancy pelosi saying today that is quote, sadly discoloring our bipartisanship in terms of our support for israel which has always been bipartisan. The Biden Campaign has slammed the move as well. The state Department Says on this, that the address is being delivered by pompeo in his personal capacity and they also contend that no state Department Resources are being used for the address. Back to you. Ashley blake burman, thank you very much. Melissa. Melissa here now is James Freeman from the wall street journal. He is the editorial page assistant editor and a fox news contributor. James, i want to focus on the land of opportunity tonight in terms of the economic message out there. This has always been a strong point for the president. The idea there is so much opportunity. Obviously were in a time when the nation is financially struggling. How does he thread that needle, do you think . Except for the stock market as you mentioned, thanks in part to the Federal Reserve but i think this is really so far the big contrast. You did hear a lot about that patriotism, opportunity, prosperity last night. How we keep the comeback alive and that is really not the message you heard last week. Then of course since then joe biden suggesting that he reimposed lockdowns if some unnamed scientist recommended it to him. I think that is, im not sure why biden wants this but that is setting up to be a principled debate between these two. Do you want the reviving economy or do you want to hunker down again and hope that, that is a solution to the virus . Melissa you know, it seems like that would be an argument that both side would like to have. Joe biden likes to talk about the science although i guess until this weekend he never had a covid test which absolutely blows my mind. He says he has been out of the basement. You would think he would have to have a test at some point in time if he in fact believed in the science the way he says. Regardless, President Trump says we want, government is the problem not the solution. You want to cut regulation. Get them out of the way. Democrats say where he is falling short on the coronavirus. Doesnt that seem like its a fight both side would like to have . If you were the president how would you make it that Less Government is the way to go right now . Weve learned our lesson over the past three or four years . Well, i think he was getting tremendous results. We saw when the he reduced our Corporate Tax rate from the highest in the industrialized world to a competitive rate. We saw a surge investment in the united states. Ended up with really by many measurements the best job market ever. Similarly a lot of success in terms of reducing arelation. The president has really our least regulatory president in the modern age, if you measure it in terms of number of rules coming out of washington. Pages in the federal register, et cetera. So i think he kind of had a lot of progress there, a lot of things to run on. Obviously covid changed things. Were now coming back but, to the biden point, i think this his timing is really weird to start pushing a lockdown again because youre starting to finally, maybe ive been optimistic here, starting to finally getting a consensus that the spring lockdowns, more recent lockdowns were really not worth the cost. Enormous economic damage. Enormous Health Damage for noncovid treatments. Enormous damage to kids not being able to get the education that they need and losing future earnings as a result. So i think this is really kind of a strange gamble for biden, especially given that he seems to be ahead in so many polls to want to tie his campaign to another lockdown. Youve been trying to patiently explain to the governor of new york how his harsh lockdown gave us the worst results in the country in terms of health and economic damage. What he should have been doing is focusing on protecting the vulnerable. Melissa right. And he is a total idiot along with our mayor and we have tried to sort of drive that point home here, using data and you know, maybe phrases that would help people understand that like the governor. At the same time the democrats made him one of the speakers at their convention. So to me that really illustrates that there is a group of people who is still hiding inside and believes thats the right thing to do, and maybe democrats cornered the market on those voters. What if the president posed the question the way, are you better off than you were four years ago . What if the president said at this point should we, is the government the problem . Should they get out of the way . Or do you think we should go back inside and stay locked down . Vote what you want to happen. Vote for me if we should go out to try to get the show back on the road. Vote for him if you think you should hide in your basement. It is, a bunch people will say hide in the basement, i have no doubt about it, but is that too stark after contrast . Is that is kind of what is going on . I think that is really the debate were getting into now. While it may be not explicit, i think that has been the implicit message. This is kind of a hope versus fear election and the president is saying, lets rebound, lets revive. Lets get back to work. Mr. Biden is saying the opposite. I think, one thing that may be for biden is that, if youre, if it become as straight economic argument without reference to covid, it is tough going for him because he doesnt really have a growth message. There is really nothing in the biden agenda which is mainly bigger government, higher taxes, saying that is about economic growth. He tries to make the climate argument there. But i think people recognize it. This is a cost. You may believe we need to do it to avert some future environmental doom but you cant really argue that this isnt an enormous cost to turn over our Energy Economy . Melissa well, theyre operating on the principle that money grows on trees, that the government owns. They sort of grows, they hand it out to people and makes everything free. I wish that were true. James freeman, thank you so much. Ashley . Thanks, melissa. Ashley i want one of those trees for sure. Speaking of joe biden is he doubling down on economic security. He Hillary Vaughn joints us with those details. Hillary. Reporter when it comes to the economy the Biden Campaign says they want to take credit for some of it but not all of it, pushing back on claims from republicans last night that the economy would tank under a potential president biden. They say that biden is the reason for the highs in the economy that weve seen over the past four years but not the reason for the lows that weve seen over the past few months. We heard about the great economy that donald trump inherited from barack obama and joe biden but not a morsel of regret for how trumps failed leadership has squandered it. Starting even before covid hit. Reporter even though biden and harris did not denounce any of the violence that has been plaguing communities like portland night after night, in their keynote speeches at the dnc, the campaign is pushing back on the idea presented last night by republicans that democratic rhetoric has been outspoken against the police but silent on ongoing riots in the street are part to blame for what were seeing in portland. Bidens campaign has been aggressively trying to drown out the convention this week with their own countercampaign but biden has not been a part of it, ashley. But he did take a bike ride in rehobeth beach today. Ashley i hope he enjoyed it. Melissa. Melissa moving confidence. New Consumer Confidence data revealing worry about the future. Big surprise there. Lauren simonetti with the details. Lauren. Lauren this was a bit of a surprise, melissa. We have Consumer Confidence now weakening for two months in a row. If you look at Conference Board data, it shows the index fell to 84. 8 in august. That was a sixyear low. July was revised lower as well. The reason . Were worried about the pandemic effect on business and job market now and in the future with more people saying Business Conditions are bad versus good and more expecting the climate to get worse in the next six months. The impact of all of this could be reduced spending. That is a major component of Overall Economic activity. The chill as we saw the number of infections spike in june and july, causing persistently high unemployment, and uncertainty when more federal help is coming if at all. The translation a pretty bumpy recovery. The economists like to give it shapes a k or two track recovery. Upward part of the k is hiring americans keeping jobs investing in the stock market, buying homes and the lower part of the k, lower income americans who continue to struggle. In my opinion, melissa, the next test for consumers, the start of the school year very soon. If schools reopen successfully, contain the number of cases that could provide a boost to sentiment. Meantime low, this latest august gauge, signals the depth of economic hole quite frankly caused by the pandemic. When we got the report at 10 00 this morning it actually took stocks off their highs. So the market closing mixed but coming off their highs with this data, melissa. Melissa absolutely. Great breakdown, lauren. Thank you. Ashley. Ashley talking about going back to school, health hurdles on campus. Colleges across the u. S. Struggling to stay open as covid cases continue to rise. Well talk to dr. Ashley some colleges are definitely struggling to handle breakouts of the coronavirus. The university of alabama reporting 500 plus cases in just the first week of classes. In response by the way in alabama, the city of tuscaloosa has shut down bars and restaurants for the next two weeks to try to stop the spread. Joining me is dr. Jenette nesheiwat. Thank you for joining us. Is this a real shocker . College students failing to follow the proper social distancing rules . I mean this is what they do in college. Are you surprised by this . What can you do to combat it . Will closing bars and restaurants around campus do the job . That is a good point, ashley. It is difficult. Kids will be kids. It is hard to educate and inform them their actions will affect what happens in the community if they become ill or their family or loved ones become ill. What it comes down to is compliance. Were seeing crowded gatherings, parties on and off campus. Why were having surges off campuses on campuses. First and foremost before they open the schools. That the Positivity Rate is low, ideally less than 5 . When they go back to school, superintendents, deans, teachers, community, that the school has a Health Safety action plan in place. It must be followed. It is about discipline. It can be tackled. They can go back safely to follow cdc guidelines. Make sure everyone in the classroom is wearing a mask. Good filtration and venlation in the classrooms. Make sure the classes are limited as well. If students are able to learn at home, should remain at home, only go to class if it is mandatory for a test, that sort of thing f theyre sick, they need to stay home. The school has to insure there are proper resources for testing and contact tracing. If someone tests positive, make sure those who come in contact with are quarantined so they dont spread the virus t can be tackled and done. It is a matter of discipline and compliance. Stark Community College in ohio, they have zero cases so far this year. Ashley it is ironic, isnt it. They complain they want the full college experience. They dont want online classes. As soon as they get on campus, they do what college kidses do and ruin it for everyone. We have some news on the effort to treat and prevent covid19. The british Drugmaker Astrazeneca is beginning phase one of its antibody trial. Im assuming this is the effort to boost the immune system, putting those forms of protein that you would normally see in an immune response into those that already have covid or perhaps to prevent people from getting it. Is that the correct analogy . Sure, similar. This is really, really exciting. So astrazeneca, theyre already working on a vaccine and hopefully to have over 100 million doses for us by the end of this year, early next year. So lets just remember antibodies, these are like soldiers that fight infections in our body. What they do is, they block the virus from attaching to our cells so they dont invade our body, so we dont get sick. So with this antibody treatment, theyre looking to see if it can help prevent disease and also treat, sort of a two in one and they have already begun phase one. They have about 50 volunteers who are already dosed. So they will follow them, watch them, to check for safety, and also check for side effects until they can proceed to phase two and phase three. Really exciting. Actually not new. We have eli lilly who injected and infused about 2000 patients with monoclonal antibodies. Sigh toe dine is using this is exactly what we need more tools in our arsenal to help fight this virus. Ashley yes. Very quickly, doctor, how close are we to having a vaccine a vaccine we can all get access to, hopefully get back to our normal lives . Its soon. It is just around the corner thanks to operation warp speed. Were probably months, maybe sick months, maybe another year for the vaccine to be on the market. Some of the pharmaceutical companies are estimating by the end of this year or early next year in the spring. Remember it usually takes about 10 years for a vaccine to get on the market. The fastest one we have the to date, measles vaccine that took about four years. Were really moving fast. We cant take any shortcuts, ashley. We have to insure the vaccines are safe, they work, and do what theyre supposed to do which is induce immunity to protect you in case you do come in contact with coronavirus in the future. Ashley all right. Well leave on that hopeful note. It is coming soon. Dr. Jenette nosh watt. Thanknesheiwat. Thank you for your Important Information today. Melissa. Melissa this story stopped me in my tracks. Reversing the call, all 77 positive covid19 test results. Tools, cattle, grain, traded goods. Even shells represented value. Then currency came along. They made it out of copper, gold, silver, wampum. Soon people decided to put all that value into a piece of paper, then proceeded to wave goodbye to value, printing unlimited amounts of money as they passed the buck to the future. Thats why its time for Digital Currency and your investment in the grayscale funds. Go digital. Go grayscale. Melissa the newlyminted bidenharris ticket may be a tough sell for beef farmers in the Battle Ground state of iowa. Farmers there outraged at comments Kamala Harris made last fall about red meat. Take a listen what she said. Would you support changing the die taterry guide lines, the food pyramid to reduce red meat specifically. Yes, i would. Melissa Garrett Tenney is live in davenport, iowa with more. Garrett, i will eat all of her cheeseburgers, send them my way . Reporter they would love to do that, melissa, the Cattle Production industry is a big part of iowas economy. The Trump Campaign is hoping to capitalize on that by warning ranchers about democratic policies such as the new green deal which called for americans to eat less beef. Senator Kamala Harris said she would change the dietary guidelines of this country to reduce the amount of red meat americans can eat. [booing] were not going to let joe biden and Kamala Harris cut americas meat. Reporter joe biden having called for changes to dietary recommendations less meat would mean less money for meat producers and that is why the ranchers we spoke to say they wont risk voting for democrats in november. I think our economy is, should be our main focus here, maybe not our dietician regulations. I have not heard anybody changing course as far as going, and voting for the democrats. Reporter meat producers have already been hit hard about it pandemic and local Democrat Party officials argue that iowa farmers should view proposals like the new green deal as an opportunity to transition from cattle to the growing market for plantbased meat alternatives. I think there is naturally going to be more and more people moving to the meat substitutes as well and the beef farmers are going to be in a bind. We well find other markets. There will be other things, other parts of economy will be picking up to replace that. Reporter that kind of economics 101 is never an easy sell when it is your job, to some extent your familys way of life that is being replaced. Melissa . Melissa yeah, im not trying one of those plant based burgers anyway, garrett. Ashley. Ashley me either. All right, melissa, thank you very much. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers declaring a state of emergency following the protests in kenosha. Grady trimble live on the scene with the very latest. Grady. Reporter ashley, the family of jay cob blake speaking at the kenosha courthouse downtown. His mother said moments ago he would not be pleased by the destruction that took place over the last two nights here in the city. That courthouse is about a mile from here. That is where the protests started last night but then they made their way here as police dispersed them. Rioters destroying several buildings and businesses along the way. I talked to several Small Business owners today. They say they understand the frustration of people protesting jacob blakes shooting by police. Really going to miss it. I feel bad for my parents. This was their baby, they started it. It is my fathers legacy. I dont get it. He has been an icon in this town for decades. It is just horrible. Reporter there will be a curfew once again tonight in kenosha from 8 00 until 7 00 tomorrow morning. Although the protesters and rioters ignored that yesterday. As you mentioned ashley, the state of emergency declared here by Governor Tony Evers. He is sending in more National Guardsmen to protect businesses and other structures here. Although i have talked to many people on the ground who have told me they have not seen those National Guardsmen. They hope they do a better job so that this doesnt happen again. Ash. Ashley yeah, fingers crossed. Grady trimble in kenosha. Grady, thank you very much. Melissa. Melissa so we all know it takes a lot of guts to start a business, especially when you were planning to launch your premier product just as the pandemic is beginning to sweep across the entire world but katy brown didnt let that stop her entrepreneurial spirit, quitting her new york city ad job to start a seltzer business, lone river beverage company. She is selling ranch water. It may not sound refreshing if youre not from west texas but people from west texas have been enjoying the tequila cocktail since the 60s. We have katy brown, the ceo of lone river ranch company. People are so beaten down by what is happening in this country. They have seen their jobs, their fortunes, their Small Business really suffer, you are a story of inspiration. First of all how did you get up the courage when you had a good job to take the leap and try to, and try to put one of the many ideas that you had into action . How did you find that courage . Yeah. I mean i think you hit the nail on the head. It takes a lot of courage to pursue any idea. The most important part of my journey has been people around me who encouraged me to take the first few steps which i think are the hardest, have supported me along the way. I think that has made a huge difference to me as i obviously been learning how to run a business but also how to run a business in a completely new industry. Melissa i also made adjustments along the way. You thought about a tequila beverage. There are a bunch of difficult ways you could move this you moved into seltzer which has become a blockbuster business. You did smart thing, making same size as cans that can go into a drink cozy, im not sure how you say it but i have them. Something people wanted to v i just wonder, what would you tell people, a lot of people sitting home have ideas. How did you figure out if your idea was a good one or not and made business sense, if youre at home thinking about it . How do you know . Yeah. So i think when we started to look at the hard seltzer category, we realized it was being driven what we call a sea of sameness, a lot of brands that look, felted, tasted the same. We felt like there was opportunity to really carve out a point of differentiation of ourselves building a beverage company. I think that is the most important thing looking to start a new business. Really looking at the category you want to be in, insuring youre offering something different, giving consumers kind of a different choice that maybe doesnt exist yet. Melissa oh, that is a great point. Tell us a little it about about how the pandemic impacted your growth and your story . You were getting ready to launch. It was april, right . Some of your supplies came in late because of the pandemic . What a time to try to get your product out there. Did you think about putting everything on hold . How did that work . Honestly we had no idea what to expect because so much was changing every single day. We were slated to go to market midapril. It was really right at the height of the pandemic as things were happening and, you know, we never, the thought never crossed our mind to put it on hold. We were heads down, doing everything we could to navigate multiple different supply chain disruptions to get our product on the shelf. I think the biggest challenge for me obviously, coming from being in advertising, how to get our product in front of the consumer, just knowing that you know, one of the core tactics a lot of brands use was instore sampling and that was immediately taken off the table for us. We really benefited from a Digital First approach. Investing a lot of capital into social Media Advertising to reach millions of people to really drive awareness, to get people in stores, to purchase our product. Melissa were out of time but i know that you called the first store that your product was in and you heard that it had sold out. I cant even imagine that exhilarating feeling. I hope a lot of people at home watching right now who have ideas will be inspired by you to pursue them and figure it out. Katy, thank you so much for coming on today. We really appreciate it as if you need it. You dont. Thanks for having me on. Ashley great story. Okay, how about this . Another great story. The return of the pumpkin spiced latte. For those that have not evacuated, up and down houston, 100 miles that way, it could be hours if not days for help to arrive if they choose to stay in their homes, melissa. Melissa leland, thank you for that. Well bring all the breaking news. Of the ashley, over to you. Ashley mayor bill de blasio not exactly making a lot of friends in new york citys dining industry. Earlier this summer we spoke with a new york city restaurateur about his expectations for business bouncing back. Take a listen. What will happen here in new york city . People coming back . People stay away for a while . What sense do you get from people you talk to . During the pandemic up to now 70 of our customers were gone from the city. I personally do not expect to come back to some semblance of normality until september. After labor day i hope people come back, School Starts reopening, i hope. Ashley all right. That was back in june, remember. Now the mayor is suggesting that new yorkers may have to wait until next year for Indoor Dining to return. He was very vague about the whole thing. Guess what, luca is back with us today. Thank you for doing that, luca. Good to see you. Lets pick up what you said in june you hoped by september, maybe just after the Labor Day Weekend that things would start to get back to normal, at least start picking up. What do you think now . Well, my hope that something will happen after labor day. I am actually reopening one of my restaurants on september 10th. I have five restaurants, three of which are open, two are closed. Im betting on the fact that new yorkers will come back and the city will restart. So far no, new yorkers are not around. No tourist business is terrible. We are down anywhere from 20 to 80 . Ashley ouch. Well you know, as i just mentioned there in your introduction, mayor de blasio essentially, kind of, you know, vaguely saying that, you know, dining inside may not begin until sometime next year. Have you had an opportunity to speak to the mayor right now, what would you say to him . Outdoor dining is not the cureall for restaurants, even in nice weather. Come november, there is no heaters that will let us stay afloat. So we need to reopen. We need to have a clear path to reopening. We need to budget our very limited resources and we need to reopen. We have been very compliant. New york restaurants have been incredibly compliant with serving alcohol and social distancing. We care about our staff. We care about our customers. We want to reopen. We want to reopen in safety. But we need a clear path. And if we do not reopen by the beginning of november indoors, i cannot imagine how many restaurants will go out of business. Ashley well, i would imagine you yourself, this is a very tough time. You have five restaurants you own around the city. Are some doing better than others . Or is it pretty much the same story throughout the city . It depends on the neighborhood. But the restaurant doing best is down 20 compared to last year and the one, two are closed. One doing worse is down 80 . It is unsustainable. Ashley yeah. I mean, look, you know, you mentioned something that has been on the minds of a lot of people, restaurants across the country, how do we survive in the winter . We recently spoke to a restaurateur in chicago who is like, we need help. We have cannot, you know, obviously once the weather starts to turn cooler we have to have another option. Some of those options that were suggested was creating bigger tents that you can have eating inside. Is that something you thought about, if we continue down the same path . What is the difference between having a tent and dining indoor . Ashley good point. Walls are closed were rather dine indoors. So i think it is a mute point. It is extra expense and most restaurants cannot afford right now. Ashley you must have other friends in the business in new york city or elsewhere. Are they, how close are they to not being able to hang on as this thing continues to drag on . Well, i just received a text message about two hours ago from a friend and a restaurant partner who said that, he is closing one of his three restaurants and, that restaurant will be closed for good. It is a restaurant in brooklyn. I hear this every day. Ppp is running out. We again, we do need a path to reopening. I think new york restaurants, restaurateurs are compliant. They know what theyre doing. They care about their staff safety and they care about their customer safety. We need help. Ashley im sure you do. Luke car, very quickly if that help does not come soon enough, some of these restaurants that we, you know, know very well in the city, is there a chance they will never come back . Well, if were talking about the top restaurants they may survive but i would say 95 of new York City Restaurants are at risk of closing if help does not come soon. Ashley that is a really disturbing number. We wish you the very best. Luca, thank you very once again for joining us. Again we wish you the very best. Hopefully we can chat again soon. Thank you so much. Melissa, over to you. Thank you. Melissa yeah, i dont think that is an exaggeration, he is right.
