A LARGE and very beautiful piece of artwork which has been attached to the railings outside Carlton and Faceby primary school, has caused significant attention since it was erected.
The large colourful piece, dominated by Santa jumping a rainbow, depicts many school activities and people who attend and work there. It is the work of Pete Smith, former teacher and head of the health and social care department at Middlesbrough College.
"Many years ago, I remember seeing a print by Shirley Hughes outside a primary school in Middlesbrough," he said. "It showed the school as a welcoming centre of its community and most importantly it made you smile. In these troubled times and in the depths of the winter we need things to pierce the gloom, and the rainbow image in so many settings, has helped to do that. So, I decided to go for a bigger scene with a bigger rainbow, first outside my grandchildren’s house in Swainby and then a second one on the railings outside my grandson’s school in Carlton."
