Israel. This is very close to gaza city. Israel is continuing to ram up up its strikes this evening in gaza. Its 10 00 p. M. In southern israel. The country extends its Ground Operations this evening. What a possible Ground Invasion might looks like. At this point its unclear. It has felt imminent the last 48 to 72 hours, really. Israeli officials today telling us that the world should expect to hunker down for a long war. They have two missions. The first is to eliminate forever the threat that hamas can present to the country of israel. So that they can never be threatened or hurt again. They say that too many of their children live in fear, go to sleep in fear at night. They want to erase the threat of hamas and the threat of what they watched unfold on october 7th. Now, secondly, and not particularly in this order because these two things obviously are very interwoven in terms of what they face right now. 229 hostages. You can see some of their faces here. We will take a look at these faces because they are real people. Irez calderon. This boy is 12yearold. Abducted by hamas. These are two threeyearold girls that are somewhere in gaza city. The question is, how do you do all of these things at once . This is a challenge the likes of which we have never seen as a Ground Invasion is likely to be underway soon. Its heavy fire along the israel gaza border. Over the past few hours, weve watched as the Israeli Air Force has pummeled the northern part of the gaza strip launching a number of air strikes in a variety of locations. At this moment, israeli artillery continues to fire in to gaza. Youll hear the boom. An indication that theyre shelling the eastern side of the gaza strip. As this Artillery Fire continues and the air strikes target different positions, we are getting reports of troop movement, israeli troops heading in to gaza. Daniel hagari, the spokesman for the idf says this is an exstanded ground raid, not the Ground Operation weve been anticipating. I want to be clear. The Artillery Fire that you hear there and the movement of troops behind me, according to the Israeli Military is an expanded ground raid. They are not saying this is the Ground Operation in to gaza. This could be the beginning. We have to be patient here and we have to be accurate with our information. This is what we have. To give you a 30,000 foot view of what is taking place today, martha, its been an exchange of fire. Factions inside gaza, 21 days in this war, have maintained their capability to target major population centers. Sirens sounded multiple times in the city of tel aviv Sending Hundreds Of Thousands of people to bomb shelters. Last hour at this location, we took incoming fire. You have ant 10 second to respond here. You can hear the thud of artillery in the distance. If i stop talking here, youll hear the engines of those armored personnel carriers. Theyre headed to gaza. Tonight there will be Israeli Forces inside the gaza strip. Whether or not this is an expanded raid or something larger, we will know more in the morning. But what is taking place tonight, martha, is unique to this conflict and unique to tonight. Over the past 21 days we have been here reporting every day, we have not seen anything like this. Were in the shelter. The light isnt very good. Activity has increased, picked up on the gaza strip. We caught some of the outbound rockets in tel aviv. I called them long range because they have the ability to reach the 50mile distance up to tel aviv. Earlier in the day, some rockets got through the defenses and hit an apartment in tel aviv injuring three. Contact in gaza says the strikes are covering the whole of gaza city. An idf spokesman said the Ground Operations in to gaza are expanding. In resent hours, idf has increased the attacks in gaza. The idf is striking underground targeting and terrorist structures. Following the activity in the last few days, the Ground Forces are expanding the Ground Activity this evening. The idf works powerfully in allits means to achieve the goals of the war. This as israel released video that appears to show a Chain Reaction hit one of the tunnels and set off Explosiving Bes stored in the tunnel. As israel says that hamas is exploiting its Tunnel Network to put command and control structures beneath the Shifa Hospital using the patients in the hospital as human shields. The idf said tonight that hamas has been hoarding the people that people in the gaza strip need so desperately. Sound like thunder in the background. That will be good for the people of israel that will be safer and live more secure lives, free from the threat of constant Terrorist Attack and it will be better for the people of gaza that will be finally rid of this terrible theocratic authoritarian regime headed by a terrorist group. Martha today i was shown the video of the hamas body come of october 7th. Its intertwined with Civilian Body Cams and recovery, people that came in and that the videos that they have. You know, it is unlike anything i have ever ever seen in my life. It is bloody and gruesome and beyond that, the thing that is so shocking about it is the laughter and the smiles of these Hamas Terrorists. Theyre calling home, asking their parents if theyre proud of them, telling them that they have killed ten jews one phone call that we listened to. You know, its important i think for people to understand israels reaction and to remember exactly what happened to these people, mark. You know, martha, what is interesting, throughout history, weve known terrible regimes, weve seen governments commit mass atrocities what is different about hamas . They dont hide their crimes. They take pride in their crimes and they parade their crimes. The i mean, all that Video You Saw was taken by Hamas Terrorists as they were brutally massacring israelis. The nazis tried to hide their crimes. The soviets tried to hide their crimes. Hamas parades their crimes against humanity. The documented evidence is their own films, the ones youve described. The rapes, the murders, the beheadings. The massacres of the young people in the pit. The burning bodies alive. Weve seen this from their own material. Their own material condemns them. Thats who were dealing with. A brutal ruthless Terrorist Organization. Martha i hope that most people dont ever have to see this movie, this video. But i want people to know that i saw it and i can testify to it, exactly what youre talking about. I want to talk about the hostages though. We all remember gilad. One idf soldier that was there six or seven years. He was traded for 1,000 palestinians. Now we have 229. Israel says 12 of them are americans, which our government has not confirmed. What is going to happen to these hostages when the Israeli Military goes in full force . And were already seeing the bombing that is happening in gaza. Who know whats is happening to the hostages now. One of the goals of our operation is to free the hostages and bring them home. We believe that is best achieved by Hitting Hamas and Hitting Hamas hard. Weve also said very clearly and we said again tonight, anyone in hamas that is involved in harming one of those hostages, one of those 229 hostages, anyone involved in hurting them, we will find them and we will punish them. It might take a month, might take a year, 20 years. We will find them and we will meet out justice. You heard those hostages. You will pay a price. Now were going to keep the pressure up on hamas. The pressure will be on them until our operational ames are met. That is the release of all the hostages and the end of this terror regime, this enclave of terrorism and slaughter in the gaza strip. Martha reuters reports theres 12 american hostages as i mentioned. We have heard from the white house that there are a handful of americans and theyre not calling them hostages. They say theyre unaccounted for. Can you confirm, are there 12 americans that are among these hostages that are being held in gaza . Can i say, martha . Some of the information remains unclear. Theres still people that are missing. We dont know if theyre dead or in gaza. Theres still bodies to be very frank that are so badly burnt theyre difficult to identify. Hamas turned people in to ash. We have trouble identifying exactly sometimes what were talking about. So there is a certain amount of unclarity. I apologize for that. I cant give you exact numbers. As youve seen the last new days, despite the releases of those two women and the other two women, the number of hostages has gone up. Were finding new information through intelligence and other sources. So im afraid i cant be more specific on the numbers that you want at this stage. Only to tell you at this stage we know theres 229 hostages still holed in gaza. Theyre being held by hamas, which is of course has shown us all the brutality theyre capable of. Martha one last question before i let you go. Will we see is the idea that the shelling will force them to say, okay, were going to release hostages to get this to stop . Weve heard from the white house that they would consider encouraging pauses to release hostages. Or would we ever see a trade for Palestinian Prisoners again for hostages . Will we see anything like that again . Martha, the key here in our understanding is just to keep the pressure up on hamas. When that pressure is unbearable for them, maybe well see some movement. Its the 20th attack against our u. S. Forces since all of this began just a few weeks ago on october 7th. This attempt happened just hours after there was a response to these attacks. That came in the force of a pair of u. S. F16s that hit two location thats are linked irans revolutionary guard. That happened last night. Lloyd austin said these acts of aggression must stop from iran and their proxies. Well speak with mike pompeo coming up. First, we go to rich edson with more. Hi, rich. Good afternoon, martha. Senior defense Officials Say they knew exactly what they were aiming at here. That pair of f16s targeted an irgc munitions storage area and a weapons storage facility. Officials say they used attacks that targeted american troops. In a statement announcing these strikes, lloyd austin called out the Iranian Revolutionary guard corps. He said these selfdefense strikes are in response to a series of ongoing and mostly unsuccessful attacks but i rainian tacked malitia. Austin says 21 u. S. Personnel have suffered from minor injuries over the past ten days in those attacks against bases housing american troops in iraq and syria. He says all those injuries have returned to duty. The pentagon is warning it could launch additional strikes. Well see if iran gets the message. As we have done in the past, we certainly reserve the right to take additional strikes and continue to ensure that the message is loud and clear that we will protect our forces and that these kinds of attacks are unacceptable. The Defense Department says these strikes and an increasing all is military presence are designed to deter iran from escalating. The navy is sending two carrier groups, positioning more aircraft and troops. The pentagon says 900 american troops are in the process or have fully deployed to the middle east. Secretary pompeo, good to have you with us. Weve seen this uptick in fire that is coming from israel in to gaza. We know its a part of the operation to soften up targets there before a likely Ground Invasion. What is your assessment when you listen to reporters on the ground . What changed here tonight . Martha, this is carefully thought out, strategic. The israelis made clear that they would respond precisely as you see them respond this evening. I dont know if this will be a part of the main assault or a raid for the evening. The israelis will make that decision. What i hope is, i hope the United States will continue to do the things that it needs to do. It frankly hasnt done them so far. It needs to give israel all the time and space that it needs. Were not talking about hours this evening or days this week. Were talking about months to defeat hamas in detail. Thats the requirement, the necessary requirement to keep israelis and americans safe as well. It is now time for the United States to do its part. I heard the administration say that these attacks have been mostly unsuccessful. Remind me of mostly peaceful protests. These attacks were deeply successful and all driven by iran. Thats the thing that the administration did at the outset that has caused us to find ourselves where we are today. They renews to acknowledge, they denied there was iranian involvement. This is all from iran. What israel is doing will drive iran to take more aggressive action unless United States deters them. Martha i want to talk to you more about iran and what should be done. I want to ask you about these hostages. Its obviously unsettled and strange Hostage Situation so far. Because generally when we have seen hostage takings, theres some kind of communication, some kind of proof of life. Maybe thats going on with the qataris. That may be happening right now. We havent seen any of these people. We havent seen them in front of a camera as you often see. We remember the horrific videos that we saw from isis of holding people. What is your take on what is going on or even if they know where all of these individuals are . Because theres a lot of different players here. Well, listening to the israeli advisinger to Prime Minister netanyahu, sounds like they dont know how many there are let alone where each of them is. I suspect that is that they are working alongside us. Im sure im confident theres arab countries trying to see who is there, where they are and doing their level best to get them home. These families are suffering terribly. Make no mistake, israeli families and American Families will suffer more if israel doesnt do the necessary. Its confident that theyre aiming to figure out how to get as many of these people back home safely to their families. Theyre doing so against the knowledge that the let up is an opportunity for hamas to rearm and continue to tack in to tel aviv and to jerusalem and beyond. Martha no doubt they took these people for a reason, for some kind of leverage. Weve yet to see how this will play out. Its quite scary for their families. We pray for all of them. What about the qataris . They play this sort of this helpful role in getting in the middle of us and israel and gaza to try to get people home. Yet they allow the leadership of hamas to live in fancy apartments in qatar. So how long can they do both here . So im confident without knowing the details that there are very complicated, detailed conversations going on. The qataris have been and will continue to be useful in this process, to help the israelis figure out how to get their citizens back home. I hope theyre doing their part to deter iran, allowing israel to do what they need to do. There will be real costs should hezbollah or the irgc forces in syria that we attacked last night. I hope theyre playing that positive role. Its true. We knew these folks were there in qatar. The israelis have work alongside qatar to help in the gaza strip for years and years. On october 7, a lot changed. Im confident everybody recognizes that there will have to be real changes with respect to how each of them treats hamas and iran in the days and months and year ahead. Martha one last question. With regard to iran, we saw these retaliatory attacks by the our department of defense, the white house, that were very clearly directed at the irgc, at Weapons Centers in syria and in these two hits. We remember what happened during the administration, during the Trump Administration when soleimani was taken out. After that, things calmed down. Theres a wide range there of response. What would you do right now in this situation if you were in charge or if you were advising the person in charge . Without real cost imposition on the leadership in iran, i unlikely to deter them from continuing their Terror Campaign that theyve been at for years and years. This is what we saw. When you go after the folks that fired the artillery at your embassy in baghdad or you go over even in this case, you go at hamas. That tells the iranians that they have your attention. So what we could learn from the police in the next few hours remains to be seen. At this point Law Enforcement is trying to get any piece of evidence or any clue to break the case wide open. That may come from the public. Yes, the public needs to shelter in place. The last thing we need to see is any more senseless murders in this case. It could be the public that spots this individual. While you are needing to shelter in place, we also encourage the public not to inadvertently assist this individual by leaving keys in cars, by leaving firearms unsecured. They were in there for several hours and pulled out. Today they expanded the operation. The internet was knocked out in gaza. That is a common Military Tactic where you knock out coms. We talked to Military Experts all the time that say dont get confused in this being some kind of Normandy Invasion where its an all at once option. This thing will happen in stages. The key when you listen to idf is them saying this is not a matter of hours or days or weeks, this is a matter of weeks or months. They plan to take their time in all of this, martha. Thats the tricky part as they start to go in. I also saw a report today theres Tens Of Thousands of palestinians that have gone to that hospital for safety. They could be human shields, right . Sure. This is also a common tactic, martha. Weve seen it with hamas and trey yingst was talking earlier about how hes been to that hospital. He described the hospital. Were seeing that with hamas. We saw this up here covering the war in 2006 with hezbollah. We saw the very same tactics where you had these headquarters under hospitals and based under schools. You know, the goal was to get them hit and in that case in 2006 one of these major infrastructural Head Quarters was targeted. It happened to be in a civilian building and got all kinds of press an condemnation for israel. The hope is the same this time. So these are normal tactics to win, as you say, the Information War.
