At least four people are dead, two students, two teachers, nine others injured after a shooting at a Georgia High School about 50 miles northeast of atlanta. The Georgia Bureau of investigation has identified the suspect as a 14yearold Student at that school. He surrendered to School Resource officers and is now charged with murder. Law enforcement agencies swarmed the campus earlier today as students sheltered inside The School at first and then The Schools football stadium. Correspondent Steve Harrigan is at Appalachia High School in georgia tonight. Good evening, steve. Good evening, bret. The numbers could change right now it stands at four dead. 30 people wounded. Nine of those wounded with Gunshot Wounds in the hospital. Many other injuries from trying to flee the scene when that shooting began. The real number of victims goes far beyond that, including a young woman who said when the shooting began, she tried to hide under her Teachers Desk. I remember being in class and i just heard boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, and at first i didnt it really didnt go through my mind that they were gunshots. I hid up under my Teachers Desk and i crawled up into a ball and i was just i was shaking. There were a number of real acts of heroism. Resource officer as well as a 12th Grade Student who said he tried to save his math teachers life. After dragged them in. I started barricading the door with all the things i could find. Me and some other kids lifted up his shirt to see where the gunshot was, maybe try to stop it and put some pressure on it. The Bleeding Wouldnt Stop we stopped until the cops got there. President biden said his heart goes out to the victims families. Vice president harris says americans are outraged by yet another School Shooting. Our hearts are with all the students, the teachers and their families, of course and we are grateful to the first responders and Law Enforcement that were on the scene. Two School Resource officers encountered the shooter within minutes after report of the shots fired. The suspect, the student at The School, immediately surrendered and was taken into custody. That is just something we dont hear a lot in these School Shootings, mass killings. Yeah. Thats extremely rare, bret. For someone to go in and to wreak havoc and to kill four individuals and then to, you know, safely be apprehended. You know, Law Enforcement basically knew the School Resource officers knew this may end in a shootout with us. But, he surrendered and he will face justice as an adult, a 14yearold. Again, this is just within the first month of school beginning, bret. What was it . What was so grievance that he had . Was this an individual that had a troubled past of a problem that he was waiting to reek havoc what was the precipitating morning this is the day im going to do this went in and killed two students and two teachers. Again, my respect goes out to these School Resource officers. They are extremely effective when they do their jobS Properly. And i work the parkland School Shooting and unfortunately there was a School Resource officer who did not engage the shooter. Who hid outside of The School while children were being massacred. And so, again, in Law Enforcement, we are trained. Did you go towards the gunfire. And thats what you are supposed to do. You go in there and you engage until the threat is eliminated or this individual is now in custody and arrested. Bret whats The Next Step here. Obviously we dont have a lot of information. We dont have where he got the gun. Obviously what the motive is what is The Next Step for investigators . The next step is they are going to continue processing the Crime Scene that school i understand its being closed for the rest of the week. Its going to take several days to process that and to gather the evidence, collect evidence, z. Tips from other students. Witnesses, conduct interviews. Execute search warrants. And, again, review the shooters social media. HiS Phone, his devices. Talk to hiS Parents, any friends, things of that nature are going to be going on behind the scenes.
