better in this debate than any other debate i've seen. >> barr being low. >> the bar was all on the ground. >> but he was better. i think he was better than the last couple of debates. i did not see awkward smile. he seemed to be a little bit more comfortable. the debate prep was working. that being said, i don't think either candidate, and i saw brianne pfannenstiel on with my colleagues a little earlier, nothing happened in this debate. and frankly in the town hall from donald trump that is going to fundamentally move the needle. and a week out from iowa, you are looking for a big shift, a proverbial bomb if you will, that's what folks should be using this last debate to do, to show up strong. and i don't think either one of them did. they showed up small, and i did not see a president on that debate stage. >> i agree. that is the key thing. because in the last three debates -- actually, all of the prior debates. nikki haley, to me, came off as the most presidential. tonight, she start -- she tried.

can't. as a chairman at a certain point i would have pulled my candidate off that stage and say, dude, you've got to rethink what you're doing here because this is not --in to your point, alic, this is not how you're going to make that closing argument. you've got to make that closing argument five days out from when voters vote. and they wasted a lot of time. >> arguing with each other. >> i tweeted about this when it was 20ed minutes in. >> two things. one, to ron desantis' credit, words i didn't think i would say tonight he was better in this debate than other debates. the bar washa on the ground whe know right. >> wow, you really think so? >> i think he was better than the last couple of debates. he seemedou to be a little bit more comfortable. the debate prep was working. that being said, i don't think either candidate -- nothing

Deadline White House

like the debate, even got covid during debate prep with the former president in the lead-up to one of the 2020 general election debates. it was a serious about-face but a moment where the call was coming from inside the house, a former trump ally running a campaign steeped in saying this man is not fit for office again. when we write the story of what 2024 looks like, it seems at this point the assumption is that trump will be the nominee again. but i think it's important for us to note that there are people trying to stand in the rift and try to show the party there are other alternatives. not just liz cheney anymore. >> we are waiting for chris christie to take the stage at an event in new hampshire where he is largely expected to announce he is dropping out. i want to bring in the co-host

republican primary in new hampshire has been 40%. so we'll see if it actually is a rising number of people who call themselves independents and show up. it is a lot of democrats way past the deadline of being able to switch and vote in the republican primary. we'll see how it turns out. he is welcome to do that. for a while governor christie had some momentum as being the non-trump candidate. by definition you are a non-trump candidate if you are running this time. i have think governor christie and donald trump had a 20-year friendship. i hate to see that disappear because of politics. and like i said for me personally i worked very closely with both of them. governor christie did a great job as the commissioner of the president's commission on opioids and drugs, a great job. you see him in the rose garden for barrett. helping with the debate prep. it went long after 2016.

carolina. giuliani's campaign had a different idea. >> my advice for the debate prep, i remember, i was in the meeting where they rolled out the florida strategy. the idea was to skip the initial primary states and betting it all on the republican primary in florida. >> there are a lot of former new yorkers there and no doubt the republican party faithful will support giuliani and that'll change the whole contest. giuliani was lulled into thinking that because he was so well-known nationally, he was banking on this, "well, look, i'm still leading in the polls." >> he's waiting until january 29th in florida to take on all comers. he'll be, in effect, out of the news cycle. will he be able to raise money? will he have any momentum? it's a high-risk strategy camping out in florida on a night like tonight. >> like, this is [ bleep ] crazy. it misread the state. it misread the demographics. it misread the voter behavior. >> this is the strategy that we

ron desantis got out of that debate with pretty good scores. hal lambert pleased with the results, big backer of the florida governor, joins us now. hal, he survived, maybe then some. what do you make of it in. >> he had a fantastic night. he got up on stage, and for the first time millions of americans were actually able to hear him talk about his record. all those people on that stage, they talk about revolutions they want to lead, he's already led it this florida. he's already done the things people say they're going to do. he's already done the school choice in florida. for illegals, the the illegals are leaving the to the state because they can't work there the because of e-verify. he supported the police there. remember, he paid for police being run out of blue states to come to florida. he's done all the things that people are talking about they're going to do. and i'll give you a little tip here, neil, you know, he came across as humble, and he came across as respectful because that's the way he is. in fact, in debate prep they've had to kind of work with him to talk about what he's done, to talk about what he does because

we work ed on debate prep in '9 and led the debate prep for every democratic nominee since, including barack obama and president biden. welcome. >> thank you for having me. >> let me start with a nonpartisan question. you wrote in aw memo, while you can lose a debate at any point, you can only win a debate in the first 20 minutes. did anyone win that debate in the first 20 minutes? >> i don't think so. i was surprise d by the fact tht with donald trump not being there, it was a big opportunity for them to step up and stand out. not be under his shadow. i don't think anyone stepped up to that. there was a lot of bickering, sometimes pointless bickering. i don't know why mike pence decided to pick on vivek ramaswamy all night. i don't think it helped him. someone with 20 points behind ron desantis, they didn't go after the people ahead of them. they were after the single digit candidates.
