Former Alabama state Finance Director Bill Newton speaks to a group studying changes in oversight of building and safety code compliance in public buildings.
The Alabama Legislature approved a bill this year to move the oversight of school construction projects of $500,000 or less from a state agency to local school boards.
House Bill 220 did not change the oversight of that state agency — the Division of Construction Management — on school projects of more than $500,000. HB 220 did remove all community college projects, regardless of size, from the DCM’s oversight.
