A series of women and children gaze, unsmiling, at the camera. Even though all are Australian citizens, many of them born here, people of colour had to seek exemptions to travel overseas. Part of the White Australia Policy in the 1920s, anyone wanting to challenge the ban had to convince the authorities as to why, and have their photo taken as part of the process.
