How Colchester High Steward Sir Bob Russell's first stepped into public life

FIFTY years ago on Saturday is the 50th anniversary of what turned out to be the first step in a long journey of public life for a 24-year-old Colchester man.
Sir Bob Russell set to work cleaning up Holy Trinity Church in Colchester, a kind act of public duty which was to become the template of his life.
He went on to be elected as a Colchester councillor, mayor and leader of the council before becoming MP for Colchester for 18 years and being knighted for public service to his home town.
