Break away from spain. And theresa may attempts to rally support. Several painful interruptions derail her speech. We will look at what went wrong. Sarah i am sarah kelly. Welcome to the program and thank you for joining us. U. S. President donald trump is visiting las vegas three days after the city suffered the worst mass shooting in modern u. S. History. President trump and the first lady visited survivors in the hospital before meeting members of the emergency services. 59 people were killed and what an 500 injured when a gunman opened fire at an open air concert on sunday evening. Investigators have been trying to establish a motive for the attack, which they say was prepared meticulously. The shooting has reignited a nationwide debate on gun control. Joining us now from las vegas is our correspondent. As we just saw, President Trump not having any Public Meetings. Rather, some Public Meeting some private meetings. Does it seem as if his trip will be seen as striking the right tone . Guest it looks like it. Definitely, donald trump struck the right to only praised police and the First Responders and all of those ordinary citizens who helped those victims of the attack, even though their own lives were in danger. And he praised the courage and heroism of these people. This is definitely what the people here expected. So many of the survivors i talked to also praise the police and their fellow men and women at that venue on sunday night because they said there were so many people who helped each other despite of all the chaos and he or and the horror. The president praising these people, that was the right thing to do. Sarah one thing the president has also said is this is not a time for debate when it comes to gun control. Of course that is not what everyone feels in the United States. A senior u. S. Democratic senator had this to say. Some have said we should not do this now, we should wait, now is not the time. You have to say, enough is enough. You have to say that there is no reason to make a semi automatic Assault Rifle into a fully automatic battlefield weapon. Sarah just walk us through how this debate on gun control is playing out in the United States. We have seen this debate time and time again in the wake of these mass shootings. Is anything different this time around . Carsten i wish i could say yes, but it does not look like it. Is pretty much the same thing. Of course come everyone at the beginning is shocked about what has happened, but then the use will the usual playbook of the gun lobby and republicans say now is not the time to debate this, to start a political depression discussion. Is the time for morning. Mourning. Then in the end they say theres nothing we can really do about this. Clearly the National Rifle association has supporters in congress. We also have to say many ordinary americans really believe in the right to bear arms, they do not want any restrictions on guns at all because they fear that will open the floodgates and in the end there would be no right to bear arms anymore. This is really not so much about sensible, pragmatic steps. Is a principal. And it is about principal. That is what makes it so complicated. Sarah how about the survivors . U. S. Spoken to so many of them there. What are they saying on the matter . Carsten it is interesting, among the survivors we talked to, a number said there should be stricter gun controls, there should be limitations, in particular on militarystyle rifles, semiautomatic or automatic. But also some survivors we talked to said it is part of our identity to have arms, to be able to go hunting, to be able to defend yourself. Is not that everybody was there and suffered from the attack said we have to get rid of all the guns. There were people who said it is terrible, but that does not mean the principle of the right to bear arms is wrong. Sarah just generally speaking, what is the mood like in the city and what are people hoping to hear from the president today . Carsten on the surface, las vegas is back to normal in many ways. The bars, the restaurants, the casinos, the shows are full and people are going about their business. But when you talk to people i talked to a number of people at slot machines they said they are gambling because they want to distract himself themselves, they want to get back to some normality. But the city is still in shock. At least right now people dont want a political debate here. They want to get over this. They want to feel the comfort of the president being here and talking to them. They want to feel the solidarity of the nation. At least till far this is what they are getting. What they cannot avoid having that lyrical debate in the next few days that political debate in the next few days and months ahead. Sarah thank you. In other news, catalonias regional president has given an address in which he both confirmed he would push ahead with declaring independence from spain and urged the Spanish Government to accept mediation. He also condemned Police Violence during the referendum. Hundreds of people wer reportedly attacked and injured when they tried to vote. Both the spanish Prime Minister and spnish king have struck back verbally against catalonia for allowing the referendum. The Prime Minister of catalonia called him quote, irresponsible for not accepting the deviation. For more lets bring in our correspondent standing by from barcelona. We understand he says he will apply the results of the referendum. Just walk us through exactly what that would mean. Guest this speech was highly anticipated right here in front of the office of the president. People have gathered here before the speech and they are already changing independence chanting independence and expect any president to declare independence on monday. He did not directly say that but he said he will push through with the results of the referendum, which pretty much means the same. He started with a moderate tone saying he is open for dialogue and mediation. But he did say he offered dialogue before to madrids government but the offers were not answered. He continued to condemn violence, which is of course the confrontation with the spanish king who did not condemn violence in his speech yesterday. He said the speech of the king was very disappointing to catalonians and was very critical of the Central Government saying the policies of the Prime Minister are catastrophic. You can see even though the speech started in a very moderate form, it was pretty much a backlash, hitting back to the speech from king felipe last night. Sarah absolutely. We will see if it does provoke an escalation. In the meantime, what has the reaction been . Not only from the people within spain, but in the catalonia region itself . We understand theres polarization on this issue of independence. What are people saying . Fanny indeed, not everyone supports independence. Some people are actually quite worried about how the situation is going to play out in the next few days, if really independence is going to be declared. What happened right after the speech finished right here in front of the office of the president of catalonia, was people started to clap spontaneously, they started to sing the catalonian anthem and felt content about the fact that their president has condemned the violence, which was not the case yesterday. At this point, the violence point is a unifying point here in catalonia. Even the people who do not support independence or only support independence if it is illegal referendum, they also say the if it is a legal referendum, they also say the violence is not ok. But catalonia is very much split over this question if independence is the way ahead. Sarah no easy answers. Fanny, thank you for your reporting. Worldfamous soccer Team Barcelona also finds itself in the center of the catalonia independence debate. Several members expressed disdain, booing and causing a Team Practice to end early. They want him off the team for participating in the Catalonian Referendum vote on sunday. They spoke to the media on his future. In response to his voting in the referendum, supporters held signs of hostility aimed at gerard piquet reading, i do not want you to leave, i want you to be kicked out. You are sickening. That message, despite him winning a world cup and two european championships with spain. He suggested he would quit the Spanish National team if asked before the 2018 world cup. The boos and chants brought training to a premature end. He subsequently spoke to the media, asserting his allegiance to the team. No one likes booing. Is impossible to question my commitment. I have been here since 2015, i consider this a family. Someone who is proindependence can play in the team because theres no candle and team. Kata land catalan team. Reporter spains next woke up is on friday against albania. Sarah a quick check of more stories around the world. Reporter next offering on the floor was a gift for picture guests. A prankster giving her resignation papers. The man sent by the foreign secretary, he claimed. Boris, please say you did this. You ask me to and now you are denying it. Reporter the mishaps only got more awkward with an fbomb of her own as the stage started falling apart behind. And it said something about us. Reporter once more. Watch it again. Ignoring what the optics could be seeing about their leader, the crowd gave her a standing ovation. Theresa may would have really liked to regain the upper hand at this conference to show her strengths as a leader. She had some interesting ideas regarding social policy. I think they went down very well with the party audience. Challenging jeremy corbyn, the labor leader who has been successful as of late. But then it went all horribly wrong. She was struggling with a bad coughing fit and could hardly finish her speak her speech. The audience really felt pity. But overall it her performance, she did not appear strong and stable but instead she came off as battered and bruised. Sarah the bad luck coming in threes for british Prime Minister theresa may. Christoph the crisis in spain over the catalonia independence vote has investors on the edge of their seats. Most european markets finished wednesdays trading session with losses. There was one notable exception, though. Reporter germanys index reached a record high in wednesdays session, the only top European Index to end in positive territory. Gains from carmakers held the dax hit the high but it was not smooth sailing. I think the worries over catalonia dan dampened the market and the market loss. But it recovered. Kind of a funny day. People had the time and lets say the inclination to look at the strong points of the german economy, but also low interest rates, offering little alternative to investments and equities. Reporter elsewhere the catalan major catalonia banks sank the furthest in line with rising political risk. The u. S. Was more or less unaffected by the turmoil in europe. After a sleepy start, the s p 500 reached its seventh straight game with the dow also continuing to rise. Christoph for some more analysis lets cross over to wall street. Jens, u. S. In the private sector less jobs were created than expected, but earnings season is about to kick off next week and we have numbers here on wednesday already from pepsi, they missed revenue expectations but the stock traded to the upside anyway. Nothing really seems to stop the market at this point. I believe it was the 42nd record close for the s p 500 just within this year. Christoph i want to return to our main story. The eu is cropping down cracking down on apple and amazons tax schemes. How was this news received on wall street . Jens taxation is a hot topic all over the globe, especially for technology companies. When it comes for the European Union coming after apple and amazon, the first question is first of all, will they really get the money . Luxembourg, apple and amazon can actually appeal the decision. Even if they had to pay 300 million for amazon, sure, is a lot of money, but not necessarily for amazon, and the same for apple. Were talking roughly 13 billion. Apple sitting on a cash flow of about 250 billion, in most of that is overseas anyhow. Wall street is not super concerned. Amazon actually gained 1 . Christoph jens in new york, thank you.
