During a traffic stop the driver shot Sergeant Lunger. A second officer returned fire as the driver drove away. Sergeant lunger was brought to Eden Medical Center where he later died. A News Conference is about to begin. Lets listen in for the latest. Reporter good afternoon. Chief of police here at the Hayward Police department. I would like to spend a couple of minutes talking to you about the man and the friend and the warrior that we lost today Sergeant Scott lunger. Sergeant lunger was that man. He was that it guy. When you read about hear about, think about what a warrior looks like visualize what Sergeant Lunger was how he lived his life. He was a great leader here in our organization. He inspired people every day, an incredible friend, a great father, a brother, a husband, a partner. We have really suffered a tremendous loss today and the world is a little worse with him being gone. There really isnt a lot of good news to share other than that we have made an arrest. We do have a suspect in custody Mark Anthony Estrada. He is being treated for gun shot wounds at a Highland Hospital. He is in police custody. He is under guard. We are pursuing a lot of follow up and leads at this time. We do know he is associated with a gang, however he is not a validated gang member. Probably the most important thing that i would like to share with the community is how much the Hayward Police department appreciates the love and support you are giving each of the men and women who support and protect you on a daily basis. Police work is not a very sexy job. Nobody wants a cop unless they need one. Today is a day that i just really want to thank my community for coming together and supporting all of us loving us, the outpouring of messages phone calls, phone calls emails, facebook, social media, you name it. On behalf of all of the men and women here in the Hayward Police department we thank all of you. Right now on the streets the union city Police Department is out helping us cover calls for service, the almeida county Sheriffs Office and all the way from south county to santa clara Police Department. I have had thousands of phone calls and Text Messages from around the state, people that i used to work with at the San Jose Police department. People cannot do enough for us in this time of tragedy. We are so grateful for all that everybody is doing for us. I have no further comments at this time but i will take some questions. Reporter can you tell us more about estrada . He is from the city of oakland. His father owns a company here in hayward where he worked. He is familiar with the hayward area. Up until today we are not aware that he has any prior criminal history. Is he a u. S. Citizen . He is. Reporter were there weapons recovered from the vehicle . Not from the vehicle we have. We have recovered ammunition during a search warrant. We have recovered a gun. We are linking pieces of evidence to the crime scene everything from clothing to blood to pieces of evidence that were found near the car stopped in the area. We are still it is still very preliminary as you know. We are not 12 hours into the investigation. So we are really putting bits and parts and pieces together at this time. Reporter [ inaudible ]. I dont believe the injuries are life threatening. Reporter [ inaudible ]. There is no why. Its an absolutely senseless murder. Is there any video of the incident . Not everybody has been deployed with body cameras in our department yet. There was not a body camera on Sergeant Lunger. I dont believe there was one on the other officer. We dont use incar cameras. Reporter [ inaudible ]. He is not. Can you say that again . Was the suspect caught [ inaudible ]. There are reports that there was somebody doing donuts in the area. We know the car stop was made by Sergeant Lunger because the car was driving erratically. Was he shot multiple times and how did he get to the hospital . We are still putting the parts pieces together. We are still getting search warrants and taking evidence into custody right now. Are you looking for anyone else who might be connected to this . We cant confirm that there wasnt anybody else in the car for sure at this time. Is estrada cooperating . Is his family cooperating . Estrada is not cooperating and it is questionable whether the family is cooperating or not. Sergeant lunger was in charge of a team when he put the car stop out. One of his officers responded to provide cover to him on the car stop. They were in separate vehicles. We generally ride Single Person vehicles here in this city. Can you elaborate more on the traffic stop and the reason Sergeant Lunger was contacting estrada . Only what i told you is that he put out that he was making the car stop because the vehicle was driving erratically. It was a short duration of time between when he actually stopped the car and the shooting took place. It was a very short period of time. Were talking about less than 45 seconds. Not a validated gang member what does that mean . We found gang at the search warrant but dont have him as a specific member of a validated gang group here in the state of california. Have you been able to talk with his family . We are with his family. We have all kinds of resources with the family. I just got back into town. I havent had an opportunity to meet with them personally, but we tell his family the same thing we told all of you. We lost a warrior today, you know. Sergeant lunger was that it guy. When you look at that Police Officer that is a leader, that is tactically sound, that is a role model for young officers tenured officers he was that guy. I mean, he was fit. He was tactically aware. He was experienced. He was smart. He was ethical. And he truly represented what we do every day in this line of work. This is a dangerous job and Sergeant Lunger knew it was a dangerous job. He brought all of those resources to work every day and mentored other people every single day in this organization. Lots more coming up on this tragic shooting of Sergeant Scott lunger. That was Hayward Police chief emotionally shaken but somewhat frustrated and angry with what she described as a senseless murder. She said there was no reason why it had to take place. We did get new information about the suspect, 21yearold mark estrada from oakland presently in custody at Highland Hospital. Familiar with the hayward area. His father works in that area. We are keeping updated on this. We will have the latest coming up on abc 7 news at 5 00. Always follow us on twitter for the latest. Really the chief saying the sergeant was that it guy. He leaves behind two daughters. We will have a lot more on possible motives and what happened exactly early this morning during this shooting coming up on abc 7 news at 5 00. It was a somber moment when flags were lowered to half staff. Lots more to come on this story. Also making news today, facing the end of their lease kids club preschool in antioch is starting to move today. An alternative location has not been set but the preschool isnt giving up hope. Jonathan bloom joins us live with the details. Reporter this morning administrators announced they are vacating this building behind me. You can see the movers have been spending all day taking kids size tables and chairs and putting them into trucks where they will stay in storage for a very indetermined amount of time. This was, by the way, antiochs only free preschool served mainly low income families and kids just learning english. Now that the district said it wants this Building Back the preschool says it is going to have to close, maybe forever. It is move out day. We are being asked to leave this location by the end of july. Reporter putting a whole school into storage isnt just tough. Its emotional. I love the children. I love the teachers. I want them back. Reporter he has run the statefunded kids club preschool since he took it over from his mother six years ago for families who cant afford private preschool it is the only option. Some programs have ten spaces open or four spaces open but there isnt a program that has 250 spaces open so these children dont have anywhere to go. Reporter they are cleaning out the building they once leased from the School District for 5000 a month. They got notice to move out so the district can use the site for special needs kids. We need a central site so students can come to one location and we can assign support staff to the students at one Central School site. Reporter the superintendent gave us that interview in march but on moving day he was unavailable to answer this question. Why dont you want to help the children of antioch. Reporter talks with the district have fallen apart. I would say there is politics at play with district administration. Reporter it is devastating for one mom who brought her kid to school here while she worked as a teachers aid. Do i need a downgrade on house . Im already looking at all of that. Its going to have a huge impact on me. Reporter kids club is hoping to find a new home. Jonathan bloom abc 7 news. Back now to our breaking news. Take a look at this.
