Mike and charles tried to make sense of what happened. Their mom and dad died. They were 100 and 98 years old respectively. Theyve been married 75 years. Everything, the accumulation of a lifetime. Fire doesnt care. Wow charles told us at least his parents deaths were quick and they died together. He says thats what they would have wanted. The Sonoma CountySheriffs Office announced it has located 57 of the 240 people missing and say communication breakdowns are hampering their efforts. The sheriffs deputies are urging people to call if someone is missing and also if someone is found so they can take them off the list. The biggest problem is communication. Cell phones are very spotty. People didnt take their chargers with them so they dont have power. The Sheriffs Office says 200 officers from different agencies are helping patrol the streets. Were getting a better idea of the measures people use to escape the flames and save those who cannot save themselves. One of those who dared go past there, he took a chance on his motorcycle to get to his home on rolling oaks. Its pretty sad. Ive seen them up there looking at their places. They look pretty upset. We made to it his house and it was one of the few still standing. But his neighbors homes were destroyed. What was once a white picket fence had melted. The guts of the home at 3700 rolling oaks were now ashes. These other neighbors across the street lost everything. Somehow the animals skirted around the flames. Even the chickens made it even though chicken coop was still smoldering. We fed them hay and gave them water. They had none when we found they will. Animal rescue teams had not gotten to them. Crews from the Santa Clara CountySheriffs Office and el cerrito Sheriffs Department helped round up some of the animals including this sheep which was in bad shape. The humidity has come up as the winds is coming off the ocean and blowing some higher, more humid air toward us. The winds will be ramping up. 30 to 35mileanhour wind gusts. Even stronger wind gusts. Gusts to 45 miles an hour for the hill tops. Low humidity and fires may start or spread rapidly. Especially those fires in the north bay and the embers there. They can rapidly spread. At least one bay area city took measures to help people breathe easier in the smoky air. One key thing about San Francisco, were miles away from the north bay fires but there is so much smoke that the afterschool practices have been moved indoors. You can see why. All the haze that has enveloped the runways. And were breathing that smoke. The smoke has created a nasty looking blanket over the bay. At noon you can see it at san rafael. And the San Francisco signature skyline was brown. The bay area quality index said it was unhealthy. However, people didnt alter their activities. They said those with existing Health Problems face greater risk however the general public should be mindful of symptoms that it could trigger bothersome symptoms. Hes been spraying down his neighbors homes and he says hes not going. Firefighters and Santa Rosa Police officers spoke to him. They took his picture, his name. They want to have a good understanding of who in the oak mont area is refusing to leave so theyll know who is still here. And hopefully thats a list that they wont have to use. Everything will be okay. Theyve done their best. Leonard even told me that when Santa Rosa Police took list picture, that they said to him, good luck. He is not the only person in the oak mont area that we have run into who does not want to leave their home. We just talked to an older woman. An older retirement community. She was walking her dog. We werent quite sure if she understood gravity of what was happening or the mandatory evacuation. When we talked to her a little more, she said she had received evacuation orders in the past a good couple of times, three times, and that in those instances, nothing had happened. So thats the sentiment of people were talking with who feel if theyve been ordered to evacuate in the past and nothing has happened, they feel perhaps safe. If you were with us in the last hour, i want to let you know that Santa Rosa Police said the first few homes in oakmont were beginning to burn and they were on crest ridge. People are asking about various streets. That was the one street Santa Rosa Police were able to say that the first homes had burned. The smoke out here is thick. Nothing to be joked about. I understand if people are asked to evacuate their homes and nothing happens and they come back, that could be perhaps an inconvenience. Were also talking about peoples safety and their lives we could try to talk to people. Leonard, do you want to talk to us . He did talk to us. He joked, he was one of the younger people in this Older Community and he wanted to take care of the peoples homes for people that could not. Doing general Law Enforcement over vallejo spotted a glow in the distance. So they started flying toward it. And he immediately saw that it was a rapidly spreading fire. Right away, he mobilized his colleagues. They began searching for victims. So far, since this fire started, the california Highway Patrol helicopters have rescued 44 people i know what the five dogs and one cat. One of the most emotional rescues, a husband and wife and their 5yearold son. And they were trying to make it out of the fire. They were blocked. As embers were hitting the helicopter, the father gave the son to the mother that was in the helicopter. The mother and the son left. The father stayed behind. What happened next is right out of the movies. Our second helicopter from red go came by and picked him up. They are ready to respond once again as soon as theyre needed. The list of businesses destroyed by the fires include National Chains like kmart and a hotel along with locally owned stores and restaurants. Youre looking at what remains of an apple bys restaurant. Look at the drive through of mcdonalds and arbys restaurants. Theyre some of the many businesses destroyed on air way drive alone. At least three wind countries windries have significant damage as well. They include Paradise Ridge and stags leap and william hill estate. Theres been an outpouring of support for fire victims in the bay area. Live in sonoma, one of the areas people signed up to help. Reporter school has been candled for the week and instead, it is being used as a shelter. Here were in the cafeteria and people are getting ready to eat dinner. Theyre having pizza and pasta and salad and volunteers have been here all day. This food has been donated from various sources. From food banks and local businesses and people from the community. Weve been told one of the biggest needs are volunteer doctors and nurses, spanish speakers and people who can work overnight shifts. The city is matching people with their various skills. Air quality is unhealthy in the north bay. As you check out live doppler 7, we are tracking quite a bit of high cloudiness as we have a system thats sending us the clouds. The visibility in the bay area is running low because of the fires. Here is a smoky view.
