Were very concerned about those folks. Good morning to you, it is 5 00 a. M. Team coverage on the evacuations. Jessica castro and matt keller are live in sonoma and napa counties and well talk to them in just a few minutes. Lets start first with mike nicco. Im hearing reports from friends and friends coworkers that theyre moving in with other people and not waiting to be evacuated so that might be a good move. Some of it is to get away from the air quality, the other is theyre too close. They can see the glow of what they said is hell rising in the north bay, the way it turns the night orange. Thats their words but it does make a good description. So gusty winds continue in the same areas until about 5 00 and so does the red flag warning. Once that passes were out of the woods at least for about another 24 hours. Heres a quick look at your 12hour day planner. Waking up to temperatures in the low 40s and 50s. 60s near the coast, 70 around the bay and 70 to 74 inland with hazy sunshine and lighter breezes as we head into the afternoon hours. Good news there. Lets see what alexis has. Were starting to see some of that haze on our Traffic Cameras already this morning. Heres a live look at the bay bridge camera. If you look under the street lamp, that is not fog, that is smoke. So once again weve got a spare the air day. Spare the air alert extended through sunday. Westbound 580 tracy to dublin, slight delays there. Youre up to 42 minutes in the yellow. Westbound 4, antioch to concord, 15 minutes and 101 san rafael to San Francisco youre in the green at 16 minutes. This morning firefighters continue to ballottle near a do wildfires in the north bay. The biggest is the atlas fire thats grown to more than 42,000 acres. Just 3 contained. The tubbs fire in santa rosa has charred more than 27,000 acres. The Redwood Potter fires have scorched 30,000 acres. At least 23 people have been killed in those fires. In santa rosa, a new alert. The city is warning people to be ready for a possible evacuation. This advisory came down last night and covers the area that we are going to show you right now if we can. There it is. Its the gold area on your screen. It latest from santa rosa. Jessica. Reporter good morning, reggie. Yes, the Sonoma County fairgrounds becoming the Central Command station for four different fires in this area. I want to bring in the Public Information officer. Paul, can you tell us the latest on whats happening here today . Absolutely. This morning we will be taking over the nons and adobe fires so were handling the entire complex. The pocket, tubbs, adobe and nuns fires. We anticipated dealing with some very strong winds. The wind picked up yesterday and then fizzled out late in the afternoon. The winds that we expected to materialize overnight never really did at the surface level. The humidity shot way up, its cold this morning, and the fire has pretty much laid down throughout the complex itself. The only activity we actually heard that was any substantial note was on the very north end of the tubbs fire. It did make some progress up highway 29 towards lake county at this point in time. Reporter so can you talk to us, in light of that, the winds that didnt materialize overnight, we did hear that there are advisories for parts of santa rosa. Can you talk about those . We anticipated originally a pretty significant north wind event again with that. There were some concerns with it being able to push back into the city limits or further into the city limits so we issued some advisories from mendocino avenue all the way out to fourth farmers highway 12. At this point in time all that stuff will be reevaluated. Like i said, it was just an advisory, but we continue to evaluate all of our advisories based on the needs and conditions. Reporter okay, thank you for the update. So good news for firefighters oernight with those winds. Ill be here at the Sonoma County fairgrounds throughout the morning and bring you updates a little later. Im Jessica Castro, abc 7 news. There are still people staying at the fairgrounds, right . Do we have any idea how many at this point . Reporter there are a lot of people staying here actually. Theres First Responders here as well as evacuees. Paul, any idea how many people are staying out here at the fairgrounds . Late yesterday i believe we were up to about a thousand at this camp. As of this morning, the numbers are just coming out so by 6 00, 6 30 we should have a better idea of numbers. Resources are pouring in from all over the state. Additional strike teams have been showing up and checking in this morning. Reporter so that 1,000 is evacuees as well as those providing aid. No, the thousand was the firefighters. I dont have a good accurate number on totals right now. Reporter so a thousand that are helping out in the firefight and various different needs that they have out here in Sonoma County that are centered here at the Sonoma County fairgrounds. Back to you. Jessica castro live for us in santa rosa, thank you, jess. Mandatory evacuations are under way for the entire city of calistoga. Authorities going door to door telling people they need to get out. The concern is that the tubbs fire could blow in that direction. Its still unbelievable. We cant believe this is really happening. Weve never been in a situation like this. Oakland Police Officers were enforcing road closures in calistoga. Lincoln avenue, the main street, is a virtual ghost town. Most people have already left. Some are refusing to leave. That same fire thats forcing evacuations in calistoga is affecting all parts of napa county. Matt keller is live in napa with a look at the fire and more on the evacuees. Reporter good morning. Calm conditions out here this morning and very cold, but the flames roll on. Check this out behind me in the hills just east of napa you can see that glow coming from there. Were here at the highway. It doesnt appear as there are any homes in the immediate area but as we know things can change very quickly. People have already left their homes to get out of the way of the path of the fires. People have been heading to several evacuation centers. American Canyon High School opened up with cots, blankets, food, walter and wifi. Its filled with people forced to leave at a moments notice. Its a nightmare. Were living a nightmare. I wish we could wake up and it would go away. A Small Community and i know everyone will come together an help each other out. Reporter the sonoma raceway campgrounds is open for rvs. Fairfield high school is also open as a shelter. Evacuation centers are taking donations like clothing and blankets. People are trying to be helpful but its difficult when you still have fire burning out of control. We just saw a flareup there in these hills. You can see that glow getting a little bigger this morning, so obviously concern that these flames are still moving here, even though the conditions are calm and cool. Reporting live in napa, matt keller, abc 7 news. Matt, what is the air like where you are . We can see the ash sort of falling in your camera light right now. Reporter you know what, yesterday at this time the air quality was much, much better than later in the afternoon. Once the sun came out, it seemed like the air quality dropped significantly. Yeah, we could see ash that is falling from the fires, but as far as the air quality, i actually took off my mask and its not bothering me right now. But if it is going to be like yesterday and the day before, once that sun comes up, the air quality drops significantly. Matt, we appreciate it. Matt keller live in napa for us. Officials in sonoma and napa counties expected to update the public on the fires later this morning. Both of those briefings will once again begin at 9 00 a. M. Well have live coverage on air, online and on our abc 7 news app. If youre not at home, download that free app. Well also get you push alerts and the latest breaking news right to your phones. If youre headed to sfo this morning, check with your airline before you go. Heres a live look from our sfo camera where the fires affected 300 flights yesterday. Thats because theres such low visibility, planes cannot land simultaneously. So its like when we have fog in the area only this time its smoke. Many arriving flights were delayed an average of two and a half hours. Sfo usually receives its faa delay order around 6 30 in the morning. So a little less than an hour and a half from now well bring you an update as soon as we get that. Lets take a look at what it looks like from the east bay hills. At least opening the window here, it looks a lot better than it did this time yesterday but the air quality is actually a little worse as the fine particulate matter has ramped up significantly. We get about a fiveday forecast. For today very unhealthy. About as bad as it gets in the north bay. The rest of us unhealthy. That means all of us are going to be opened up, vulnerable to the pollution in the air. By monday its going to be possibly, this is their forecast, north bay, coast and central bay, inland east bay, those most susceptible and then South Central and Santa Clara Valley shouldnt have poor air quality monday. That could change depending on what happens over the weekend but the poor air quality will last through at least monday for now. Lets talk temperatures. 42 in menlo park, 46 in redwood city, pacifica 49, everybody else 50 to 52 degrees. Weve got mid to upper 40s all the way into the south bay. 42 in san ramon, 41 in napa. Notice which way the winds are blowing right now. Theyre blowing back towards San Francisco and that means the smoke will come back towards us as we head through the Morning Hours. Dry and smoky for the roads today. Mass transit and spare the air. If youre on the bay water today, its not quite as breezy as it was yesterday. Lets find out more about that commute. Heres alexis. Yeah, we dont have any major problems so far for the typical commute here on this thursday morning but we of course have a lot of road closures in the north bay. I know this is fluid and a lot to keep up with. Im sending out a lot of resources for you this morning. State route 128 closed between tubbs lane and chalk hill road out of the calistoga area. Same thing goes for state route 29. Youre shut down between old lawley and western mine road. We did hear about a collision in one of the fastrak lanes on the lefthand side, im not seeing it here yet. Ill try to have more information soon. No metering lights yet. The red cross has two new shelters open for fire evacuees. Well tell you where people affected by the north bay fires can now go. Obviously this is not only serious but getting more serious. Governor jerry this morning we are hearing from santa rosa residents who lost everything. One of the hardesthit areas by the tubbs fire is the coffey park neighborhood. Maggie is live on miller drive inside the area that is still under mandatory evacuation. Good morning, maggie. Reporter good morning. Here in coffey park, like you said, one of the hardest hit neighborhoods. Driving down street after street all you see is total and complete devastation. This used to be a subdivision in santa rosa, a little over an hour north of San Francisco, with hundreds of homes. Now every single one of though homes is just a pile of rubble. People who have been able to come back in and take a look at their homes tell us that it was hard for them to even recognize which one was theirs. There was one woman who said shes been here for 20 years and now she could hardly recognize which one her home was on the block because it had been reduced to just nothing. We spent all day here yesterday as well Walking Around looking at some of areas. Some of the dramatic scenes we saw exemplified how powerful this fire was. The aluminum on car tires completely melted. Down the block we saw what was left of houses as just chimneys, basketball hoops, down to nothing. You can tell how ferocious this fire was. We know firefighters are out there right now working overnight 24 7 trying to stop the spread and making sure that the devastation were seeing here in coffey park we dont see in other areas of santa rosa as well. Maggie, when youre talking to some of the people who are able to escape and came back to see that there was nothing left, did they tell you stories about how they knew to get out there and are they worried about maybe some of their neighbors they havent heard from . Reporter some of the stories are terrifying. We heard from people who only found out, they woke up and saw flames practically outside their back door or flames coming down a hill. Here in coffey park we were told there were sirens that went off, cop cars down the street in the middle of the night making an announcement people should evacuate. At journeys end trailer park we talked to many people as well who said they woke up middle of the night, flames were outside their door. One man helped his neighbor in a wheelchair escape. Unfortunately, some people in that trailer park were unable to escape and died as a result of it. So this is a tragic situation and were told its potentially only going to get worse so this is something were going to be reporting about now for days to come. Maggie, thank you. And there is more help out there for wildfire evacuees this morning. Were going to look at photos of two red cross shelters open, one at Contra Costa Community college and the other at cal expo in sacramento. Everyone is welcome there. In Solano County the alan witt Sports Complex is open. There is food, water and 65 beds. That is in fairfield near west texas street and beck avenue. Santa rosa police have arrested three suspected looters within the evacuation areas since the fire started. Unbelievable that we have to tell you about that. The department has received at least 69 calls of possible looting. 15 people were questioned. Three suspects arrested. Each either had outstanding warrants or were in violation of probation. And people wondering what sparked all of this. Well, a pg e lineman believes downed power lines and exploding transformers sparked the wildfires in the north bay. He said he wants to remain anonymous. In the early moments of the disaster, several calls came in about power lines falling in high winds. Electrical investigation, 1047 maverick. Hazardous conditions, possible transformer explosion fulton road at old redwood highway. Weve been advised there are power lines down with a transformer down. All units be advised. The lineman says that customers may also be to blame because many resist when crews try to cut vegetation. These destructive winds along with millions of trees weakened by years of drought and recent renewed vegetation growth from winter storms all contributed to some trees, branches and debris impacting our electric lines across the north bay. We have posted the entire statement at abc7news. Com. A reminder from Sonoma County officials, the sonoma raceway is not a general evacuation shelter. The raceway is available for rv campers only. Sky 7 flew over the 50acre campground earlier this week. Evacuees in rvs were allowed in starting on tuesday. It can handle up to 2,000 people during major events. Officials teamed up with United Site Services to provide basic services for rvs that includes water and sewer. Governor jerry brown grateful for all the tireless and selfless work being done by firefighters and First Responders. He stopped by the office of Emergency Services yesterday to convey his appreciation. I just want to thank you and commend you for all youre doing. Obviously this is not only serious but getting more serious. Peoples homes and lives are totally disrupted. I know everybody in the state appreciates all that youre doing. Governor brown says the damage total from the fires will run into the billions. He says hes encouraged by the promise of federal aid from washington. Lets get over to mike nicco. I know youre looking at the long forecast. We do have some rain on the way, if only it could come a little bit sooner, right, mike . The sooner it gets here the better off but thats the major change from yesterday. Hi, everybody. We talked about monday, i was watching that cold front come down. The medium range models had it knocking on our door. Now theyre saying its going to get a little stronger push down towards our neighborhood and could bring maybe up to a third of an inch of rain in the north bay, fingers crossed. Thats also next wednesday so it is quite a ways away. So lets talk about what leads up to that. Sun and smoke. Fire danger does taper today. Clear and cooler and calmer tonight. The fire should lay down a little bit. Then tracking that chance of rain. Lets get right into the numbers today. 62 to 64 Half Moon Bay into San Francisco. 68 in oakland to 72 in palo alto. 72 in san rafael to antioch and fairfield about 75. Tonights temperatures, look at that, low to upper 40s just about everywhere. So here we are wednesday at 5 00 in the evening. Watch as the rain comes down. Now, its only green, which means its fairly light rain, but it is rain. And by midnight through the Morning Hours well have our best chance of receiving some of that rain which could help with the fires and could help also with the air quality. That is if it materializes. Its still a ways away. Until then weve got bone dry air through at least monday and temperatures reaching the 70s, 80s and possibly 90s monday. So we still have some other obstacles to go through. Really hoping that rain happens here about a week from now, mike. Taking a look at our traffic maps. Earlier i told you caltrans was encouraging semi drivers to avoid westbound 80 through the vallejo area. In fact they were saying 580 was an option for you. Normally that is restricted for tractortrailers. You have to stick to 880 instead. They are now saying semis no longer allowed to use 580 so you are no longer restricted through the vallejo stretch. Heres walnut creek so southbound 680 moving along okay. We are expecting to see a lot of smoke filling in later today. No issues westbound 80 highway 4 to the maze. No problems across the bay bridge and 101 San Francisco to sfo. Fire evacuees put at ease fire evacuees put at ease knowing their pets something we all think about as we head into retirement. Good morning to you on this thursday, october 12th. Jessica on assignment covering the wildfire disaster in the north bay. Well check in with her throughout the morning. We want to start with meteorologist mike nicco. Good morning. I want to start with the air quality because thats affecting all of us. Reggie, you made the remark that santa rosa has cleaner air than San Francisco. Heres the latest air quality map. Its moderate up in santa rosa because the winds are blowing out of the north gusting to 20 to 30 Miles Per Hour overnight pushing that smoke to the south, as we expected. Heres a different way to look at it from the east bay hills. Parts of the north bay are very unhealthy as you head towards napa and solano. Other parts like the coast and central bay, which is in yellow there an inland east bay which are in green are unhealthy for all of us. South central is pink and poor. And Santa Clara Valley, youre doing okay. This will change the next couple of days and ill take a look at whats going to affect our firefighting efforts coming up next. All that being said, it is a spare the air day today and actually every day through sunday. If you can car pool, use mass transit, that is highly recommended. Com for specific streets and areas. Were going to get to matt keller who has been looking at some flames this morning. Hes live in napa county with a look at the atlas fire burning still. Hey, matt. Reporter good morning, natasha and reggie. Were seeing some of these flames flare up and then sit back down this morning here in the hills east of napa. Thats the good news is that these flames dont appear to be getting bigger, they appear to be getting smaller. We still have these flames and the glow here in the background. We are standing off of highway 221 and geyser road. The good news, this is in a park here. There are homes to the north of us and then to the west is napa. There is an advisory evacuation for parts of the city of napa. It is not a mandatory evacuation, but the city says residents should consider preparing for evacuations should the situation worsen. But it appears that the weather conditions out here are favorable for the fire. The winds are really light and the conditions are calm and the temperatures are very, very cool out here. We did see a bunch of Police Officers drive by in the last 20 minutes or so, apparently here to help with evacuations and also road closures. They are coming from all across the state. Of course well keep an eye on these flames behind us and let you know what happens here. Matt keller, abc 7 news. In santa rosa, people dealing with a new alert. Reporter hi, good morning. Yes. This is basically where they are going to have Central Command or where they will handle four different fires. You can see all the information maps and charts here that are available, but they will handle things for tubbs, pocket, nuns and the adobe fires here. Theres about a thousand firefighters and First Responders staying here at the fairgrounds ready to deploy. I want to show you also around here you can see that theres a ton of tents where they are sleeping. So this is where they will deploy from later today. We did learn good news for the firefight. The winds did cooperate overnight. The winds that we expected to materialize overnight never really did at the surface level. In fact the humidity shot way up. Its cold this morning and the fire has pretty much laid down throughout the complex itself. Reporter back here live, we also learned more about the also learned more about the advisories issued in in in in in none have been lifted since yesterday but calmer winds were definitely a good thing for folks. Of those four fires, the tubbs fire was really the only one that made any significant changes overnight. We have learned that that particular fire is moving from sonoma towards lake county. Last we heard it was right on the border of sonoma and lake counties. Reporting live, im Jessica Castro, abc 7 news. Jessica, thank you. The fire is so different from the ones weve seen in the past because its affecting so many Population Centers including now areas in and around the city of sonoma. We want to continue our Team Coverage with amy hollyfield. She is following that tough decision for many people to stay or go. Good morning, amy. Reporter hi, good morning, natasha. The police here at the perimeter tell me the evacuation was completed by about midnight. They say no one has been asking them this morning if they can go back in and they say a lot of people had already left before the order came down. The order was issued about 8 30 last night. People then quickly had to pack up their homes and businesses and make tough decisions about what to take and what to leave. Some decided to pack up but to stay until they really feel threatened. In the meantime we figure it will be one less car on the road. And the winds shifted away from here so its not raining ashes so bad right now. So were just staying ready. Reporter there was quite a line of cars of people evacuating. The order was for sections of eastern Sonoma Valley. At this checkpoint here at 7th and castle, police say overall it went pretty well. Officers say people who want to stay have that right. They cant force them to leave. But once you leave, you cant get back in until the order is lifted. Amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. Amy, thank you. This morning the town of calistoga remains under a mandatory evacuation because of the tubbs fire. Last night Police Officers and firefighters went door to door urging calistogas 5,000 residents to get out of their homes. The city is calling the mandatory evacuation a success. Late last night officials said the fires progression had slowed. Most Public Schools in the fire zones will be closed again through at least tomorrow. Some concern about the smoke is causing some other districts to cancel. Vallejo city schools are closed for the rest of the week, mt. Diablo, martinez and antioch have closed all schools today. Theres a list on our website and on the abc 7 news app. The air is so bad that a Half Marathon race scheduled for this weekend in San Francisco is now cancelled. The air quality is expected to get even worse into the weekend because the winds will be calmer and the smoke will settle. You can see theyre about 20 to 30 Miles Per Hour right now, which is feeding those fires just a little bit. But we do have some other positive news to report. Down in the valleys, the winds havent made it down there, but once the sun comes up, some of those winds will come down to the valley and it will get breezy for a time. Now lets take a look at whats going on up north as far as our wind advisory until 5 00. The winds were faster here last night than they were across the north bay so thankfully we didnt have any fires burning there. 39 in petaluma, 48 around santa rosa to 57, a little warmer in napa. Look at american canyon, 41 degrees. So quite a difference in temperature right there. Lets take a look at the humidity. Remember yesterday it was around 85 to 100 . Definitely lower this morning, from 57 to about 80 . Because of that, the danger continues all the way through 5 00 for all the areas you see in red. All right, the winds, the ferry building, the flags have been point to the southwest. That means we have a northeasterly wind. Thats why the air quality is so poor here in San Francisco. 7 00 this morning temperatures in the 40s everywhere. 60 at noon. Near 70 around the bay, 70 to 74 inland.
