John Catholic Church on canvas street. Another meeting in english at the nap ma Valley Unified School district auditorium. Now well turn to our meteorologist lisa argen for the late test on the conditions outside. Good morning, carolyn. We have a red flag warning for the Higher Elevations of the north and east bay until 8 00 this morning. We still have breezy winds up to 20 miles an hour. Low relative humidity even at this hour. And if there are any fires that, well, there are fires there, but if more start, they can spread very quickly due to the offshore component. So the air quality now unhealthy in the north bay. It is poor everywhere else, but the winds have been pushing the smoke offshore. Getting a break in most of the bay area, except many the north bay. And we will be looking at these breezy winds. Check it out, 25 to 30 miles an hour. This is a couple thousand feet above the surface, but still, were looking at 20mileanhour wind gusts in oakland. And they are all out of the northeast. So the offshore component is not what we want here. 64 in halfmoon bay. 50 in hayward and mountain view. 60 in los gatos. We are looking at a dry, warm day today. The numbers are cool in the valleys this morning. Warmer at the coast. The 70s and 80s for a quick warm up. The mid to upper 80s afternoon. And a little warmer tomorrow. And the winds have calmed and that helped firefighters with the strong, erratic bursts spread embers outside of sonoma. Cornell bernard saw a house burn down there yesterday. This morning cornell is back in the neighborhood on castle road. What is it looking like this morning, cornell . Reporter much of the area remains under a mandatory Evacuation Order. Sadly, this is what is left of the firefight on saturday. Several homes were lost in that firefight, unfortunately. We are here on castle road, two to three homes burned by flying embers. There was nothing left of this home. We are seeing some burned out cars and microwave ovens, a bicycle and riding lawn mower. Those are the only things recognizable on this lot. The strong winds kicked up saturday sparking a new arm of the nuns fire. Forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people in the Sonoma Valley. The cal fire crews hit the area hard from the ground and air. The firefight continues today, but right now theres a 15 containment on the fire. Get this, cal fire says since january, 243,000 acres have burned statewide. Remarkably in the last week, 214,000 acres have burned. Listen to this. Pretty stunning figure that the fact we have burned as much in a week that we have all year long. Its a fire season in a week. Resources are stretched pretty thin, but the crews are still in good spirits. This is the late season fire. This is when california suffers the most devastating wildfires. Reporter and the fight continues, right . We just got off the phone with cal fire that says crews are getting the upper hand on the fires here in the sew noma valley, really because those erratic winds have dissipated. Carolyn, when we got here this morning, the winds were fierce. It was really, it was really devastating for the firefighters trying to save homes all around here. Sadly, they could not save several homes here on castle road. But they were able to save many, many others. The mandatory Evacuation Order is still in effect for about 400 people, 400 residents here in this particular area as the firefight continues around us. But there is good news. They are getting the upper hand on the flames near the Sonoma Valley. Cornell bernard, abc 7 news. Cornell, that statistic is staggering, the one act the amount of acreage burned just in one week compared to all year. Reporter yeah, its pretty shocking. But you know, when you get a look at the devastation from santa rosa to the Sonoma Valley, you can understand why the numbers are really so startling, right . They are. They are, indeed. Thank you, cornell. The struggle continues for many displaced families. Some are trying to bring a sense of normalcy during this really difficult time. Abc 7 news report story. Reporter special guests were treated to an extra special show at shuffles magical ice cream shop. Evacuated families came in from the smoky air for a muchneeded break. After all, laughter is considered the best medicine. Because life has been far from easy for these families with young children. They are scared. And that they dont know where their cousins or friends or where their grandparents are going to be. Where are they going to go . Reporter living in limbo is unbelievably hard. So now theres a renewed effort to bring some sense of normalcy back to evacuees. At the Finley Rec Center now a shelter, the red cross wants to stream the 49ers game on the big screen. You have a hot dog in your hand and chips and watching the 49ers. Anything to keep the stress down. I think its a good thing. Reporter finding your next meal is likely the last thing anyone wants to think about, if thats why this volunteer is trying to get food boxes made for evacuees, not in shelters, but who still need help. Like when they are waiting in long lines at the assistance center. Or while multiple families are displaced and living under one roof. Trying to feed everybody is really hard. So what were going to do tomorrow is were going to open a spot here in santa rosa where families can come to pick up food, hopefully produce bags, things like that to take home. Reporter in santa rosa, reporting for abc 7 news. And that assistant center that lisa mentioned opened up in the old press Democrat Building downtown. A onestop shop for federal, state and local assistance. They can get help with replacing drivers license, childcare and housing. The center has helped nearly 400 people, they did that yesterday. It will be open every day from 9 00 to 7 00 for at least the next two weeks. At one point, the line stretched a block and a half. People here are absolutely outstanding. Theyre helpful. Its amazing there. And they walk you around, make sure youre set, make your you have water and make sure you have something to eat. All i got out with was my kitten and my little dog. Reporter its been an emotional week for goldie and her daughter. They moved repeatedly to escape the Evacuation Orders. Now she wants to hear one thing. That were all going to get some help. Reporter Governor Brown surveyed the destruction from helicopter and on foot. He told the crowd help will arrive. Everything that can be done will happen. Reporter he was met with enthusiastic applause, but this didnt satisfy everyone. People wanted to know, where do you get your mail . How do you get permits to rebuild . And what do you need to do to get a new drivers license . If you go online, it is like november before you can get an appointment at the dmv. And im not quite sure what they will require in terms of being able to prove your identification. Reporter others had more intangible and perhaps impossible questions, like when will the fires stop . And the recovery begin . Thats the big question. And nobody knows. I just hope between the politicians, our cities and all of these wonderful people, that it will be soon. Make it happen. Abc 7 News Reporter katie has more. Reporter a cavalry surrounds homes in the valley area of sonoma trying to save them during extreme fire conditions. All residents can do is wait behind the evacuation lines. Anxious, extremely anxious. Zbrr emb embers ignited on castle road forcing evacuations. Its been a tumultuous few days back here. And i can see right now that its not even close to being over. Reporter we found two homes destroyed on castle road and one on halfmoon street. Someone managed to save these classic cars by pushing them out of a garage that burned on halfmoon street. We shared images with jim titus who choked up with relief that his homemade it. A lot of people found out that their places were okay. Reporter but not everyone is in the clear. The up front of the fire is burning northeast of the town of sonoma. The black smoke youre looking at, firefighters think it may be a structure. We are at bartholomew winery where there are hot spots all around. This is a marathon. So even after the active firefight is done, theres still going to be a lot of hazards, trees down, power lines, that sort of thing blocking the road. Reporter cal fire says theres no timeline for when residents may be allowed back into their homes here in the evacuated areas. In sonoma, katie eutiss, abc 7 news. And the fire advanced near highway 12 yesterday. Intense flames glowing against the night sky in santa rosa. We saw fire truck after fire truck going into the firestone. The wind gusts in this area really drove those flames. Abc 7 News Reporter veronica miracle was along highway 12. Reporter in just a tenmile stretch on highway 12 near santa rosa, youll see destruction burning hillside and homes far enough away from danger. Im really surprised that this is where it is. Reporter kevin lester of rankin valley is inside the evacuation zone concerned about a spot fire burning east of him on highway 12. Got to do what you can. Dont want to just sit and watch it happen. Reporter sandwich in the middle of the massive tubbs and nuns fires is nearly 200 acres burned forcing evacuations on saturday morning. As predicted, the wind event came up last night and early this morning to push the fire down the hill. Reporter firefighters at first were scrambling to protect the homes of more than 3,000 evacuees. But a heavy response is slowing the blaze. And another ten minutes further east from this fire, destruction from the enormous nuns fire. Firefighters believe the nearby spot fire came from this direction. The only certainty for first responders, the unpredictability of the blazing. When the winds picked up, we were not sure which direction this fire was going to go. Reporter officials are urging people who have evacuated to check in with Family Friends and on social media so they arent reported missing. On highway 12, veronica miracle, abc 7 news. The paradise pets is already bursting with 500 evacuated dogs, but they tell us they have room for more. People forced to flee off and cant take their pets with them and need a place to house them temporarily. Once again, both paradise pets in santa rosa and rohnert park are accepting dogs. This is the time of the year where the marine layer is abs sent. And due to the offshore flow and the cool time of year, we are looking at some wild temperatures spread this morning with much cooler air here in the delta area, also in the north bay, low dew points, but with the offshore wind allowing for numbers to be pretty mild from oakland to halfmoon bay. Heres a look at the mild numbers prom the golden gate, 62 in San Francisco. 53 in oakland. It is 66 right along the coast there. And looking at low 40s, gilroy, 42. You will need a jacket for the next few hours, but then it will be a warm day today. As much as ten degrees above average for you in santa rosa. Its 41 right now. Spare the air alert in the bad air quality will continue, specifically for the north bay. Ive been getting a lot of questions as to why it cleared out yesterday. And we have the gusty offshore winds just blowing the smoke out to sea. But for the north bay, thats not going to be the case. Well see the poor air quality here, but the entire bay area is still looking at not great air quality. Concord, 47. Livermore, 47. There will be patchy areas of smoke throughout the day, even in San Francisco, parts of the east bay. So high fire danger. Breezy in the hills today. We have the strongest winds around sunrise, so between now and about 8 00, well be watching for that. Then the red flag warning will be lifted for lighter afternoon winds. Sunny and warmer tomorrow. And were talking about temperatures near 90 degrees. A chance of showers comes in on thursday and friday. Heres a look at the fires, the wind direction and the wind speed. The direction is from the land out to the sea. That the offshore component, 12 to 15 miles an hour here from the pocket fire, the sulfur fire. Calm winds near santa rosa. But you notice, we are looking at the northeasterly fire from sonoma. Still very dangerous with the possibility of fire spreading. And by 9 00, the winds will be calm as we take into this monday. Still looking at relatively calm winds, but the component is offshore. So that is allowing for dry air, relative humidity. Right now, just in the 20 range going down to 10 , maybe 9 today. We bring in the storm impact scale thursday and friday to bring in rain. That will also increase the relative humidity. And amounts look pretty impressive. So your thursday morning commute looks to be a little bit on the damp side. As we go through thursday evening, same thing. Friday morning, the rain will begin to pull out by late in the morning. And we are looking at amounts anywhere from a third of an inch for some of you to upwards of a half inch or these are prem lipreliminary estimates. 80 on the coast in the city. 83 in san rafael. I am 9 years old and i had a Major League Baseball and it all burned up. So sad. I know you are not altogether but hope they get this. I think they will. Fires are burning across the north bay. The death toll stands at 40 victims and officials worry the number will keep growing as more people are found. It is believed most of the people died tuesday last week. You can see the current number of acres burned and the containment levels for each of the major fires. More than 182,000 acres have burned in the north bay in all. Cal fire stays they expanded the firelines. Meteorologist lisa argen has a look now at the forecast today. Good morning, carolyn. Were starting with the red flag warning in the upper elevations of our north and east bay hills. And it is breezy. In fact, were looking at wind gusts of 27 miles an hour in the oakland hills. And about 29mileanhour at about 2200 feet in the north bay. So north to northeast wind gusts this morning right on through 8 00. Low relative humidity. And this, of course, is the way fires spread. So air quality now is unhealthy in the north bay. Marin, sonoma, napa, and elsewhere throughout the day, you see a bit of clearing with the offshore winds pushing the smoke offshore temporarily. Except for the north bay. Heres a look at the current winds right now in the upper elevations. Notice oakland hills, 20 miles an hour. 25 around mount tam. So these will continue to blow throughout the next several hours. The sun comes up in another 50 minutes when we get the strongest winds. It is 50 in hayward. 50 in fremont. 53 in oakland. And your forecast today calls for the warm weather to continue. About 10 degrees above average putting us in the upper 80s in san jose, santa rosa and 80 today in San Francisco. At least calmer winds are forecast today to slow down the wildfires burning. Abc 7 news Cornell Bernard is on castle road with a look at the devastation. Cornell, it is certainly going to take months, perhaps years for the community to rebuild. Reporter youre right, carolyn, theres a lot of smoke in the air but no wind. Much of Sonoma Valley remains under Evacuation Order. Meanwhile, the firefight continues in the hills around us. Theres good news on that front. Well talk about that in a moment, but first this is some of the devastation left behind by saturdays fire. Sadly, several homes here on castle road were lost. Firefighters say burning embers from the ridges around us burning still caught several homes here on fire. We are seeing a few burned cars here with a few things recognizable on the lot. This is sparking a new arm of the nuns fire forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people who live in the Sonoma Valley. Cal fire crews were hitting the fire hard and continue to do that from the ground and air. Right now we are told that theres a 15 containment on the fire. Thats good news. Yesterday there was zero containment. Its day to day, it changes. One day you wake up and theres smoke, the next day its gone. The next day its back. It is such a changing environment. We dont know what to expect. But for future, it are take a while for the town to recover. I just got off the phone with cal fire and 15 on the fires around us. And the food news is the erratic winds that were so fierce yesterday have really dissipated. In fact, were not experiencing any winds right now. We are talking about the mandatory Evacuation Order issued overnight on saturday, but at this point, we do not know when it could be lifted. Still a lot of hot spots to douse and the firefight like i said does continue in the hills around us. Were live in the Sonoma Valley, Cornell Bernard, abc 7 news. Well, the containment numbers are a reason for some optimism, cornell. Reporter the embers ignited this home and another home down the street here on castle and some up on the ridge. That was the biggest enemy of firefighters. This morning things are looking much better. Good news for them and for everyone there in Sonoma Valley. Thank you very much, cornell. Now to the incredible tale of two napa men who an entire community has to thank for saving their homes. When cal fire was not able to make it, they stepped up. Abc 7 News Reporter Lonnie Rivera has the story. Reporter fast and furious sunday night in napa. And quickly began threatening dozens of homes in the napa community. Two men immediately jumped into action. Nearly a week later dan showed him where the battle began. The fight that night was against the patrarch fire. It is like, stop it now or that whole neighborhood behind us was going to go. Reporter as the heat and smoke intensified everywhere, cal fire officials shifted to life saving. I asked him, where are the cal fire dozers. He said, all resources are being used right now. Reporter with no help on the way, dan and his boss e li stepped up to protect their community. Communicated by cell phone as they use their bulldozers to dig those critical lines. From where we are looking right here, it goes down four miles. It was completely all on fire at the exact same time. Reporter there were several close calls but adrenaline kicked in. What you dont notice looking at this line is how hot this was. Very hot. My hair was singed. Reporter those lines were dug by dull bosers, bulldozers that kept at it for four days. Dan learned how to cut lines in the military. These were use in the fires. Reporter the winds may be calm but the fire danger is serious concern. Dan is on alert. You can see this could stop it. Reporter Browns Valley neighbors are thankful for dan and his boss work to save this neighborhood. They have set up a gofundme refueling. He says they will likely give the money away. His payback, seeing a Community Still standing untouched by disastrous wildfires. If that equipment wouldnt have been here, this line wouldnt have been here, and that fire would have been in that neighborhood. Reporter in napa, loni rivera, abc 7 news. Well talk about the sky map 7 feature on sky 7 giving residents of the north bay some valuable information about where many of these fires are burning. When activated, sky map 7 geo locates nearby streets, highways and local landmarks. This video is from yesterday afternoon when sky 7 flew over Sonoma County near highway 12. Now to some good news about animals that were missing after the fire in Sonoma County. Odom the dog stayed behind while his family ran from the flames last sunday. He was guarding the goats on the property. His familys home burned to the ground but all the animals were safe. And then on thursday, the dog and goats were nowhere to be found after a frantic search, odons owner called abc 7 news to say all the animals were found safe in the neighborhood. And this time odom will be coming with the family to their evacuation site. They are still working on a plan for those goats. A church in the park is opening a soup kitchen for those affected by the wildfires. Starting tomorrow, veaievacuees get a free home cooked meal at first spanish baptist church. The soup kitchen will open at noon and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next month. The visibility that day was just a half mile in the morning. On thursday that number jumped to 582,000 gallons. They are trying to get the job done, lisa. And they are making progress. Nearly 6,000 homes and other businesses damaged or destroyed. Many know theres nothing left for them to go home to. My brothers home burned to the ground. Reporter others desperate to find out what they left behind. Scott peterson hasnt been able to see his winery since the fire first ripped through sonoma on sound night. Sunday night. Reporter police have totally locked down this neighborhood and are not letting anyone in or out. But they are blocked by a wall of smoke. Thats less than a mile away. Reporter right behind me in Sonoma Valley, the wildfire is very active and extremely dangerous. Helicopters and airplanes nonstop are trying to put out the flames, but right now that wall of smoke just keeps getting closer and closer. They are starting to get ahead of the fires. Some are nearly 50 contained. Mandatory evacuations remain in effect, but firefighters we speak to say they are doing everything they can to battle back the wildfires. Extra resources have been brought in from across the country. And all day long, we have been seeing helicopters and jet airplanes overhead working to douse the flames.
