Today he said dozens of city officials went inside the building before the disaster. News reporter Lesley Brinkley was in court. Reporter for a second day, ghost ship founder Derick Almena took the stand in his defense. He pulled a list out of his jacket, a handwritten list his lwyer tony sarah says he made while sitting in jail for 2 1 2 years. On the list, names of dozens of city officials he said walked through the warehouse, including 16 visits by 28 police officers. And 13 members of Oakland Fire Department who he testified came by five separate times. Make no bones about it. We believe that the fire Fire Department perjured themself when they said they never went in. He described a pig roost and how three other firemen dropped in. Sarah asked, did you ever hear you were in violation of fire code. Never, he replied. They were enjoying themselves. Referring to previous testimony from officials who said they never were in the building, he said theyre good people and lying. He is facing 36 counts of Involuntary Manslaughter along with codefendant max harris for the december, 2016 warehouse fire that killed 36 people. As crossexamination got under way in the afternoon, a lot of the animosity surfaced in court as prosecutors tried to point out discrepancies in almenas testimony. Families of victims reacted with disgust. Because hes such a wiesel. He cannot he speaks around his answers. He tries to negate what he has said in the past and he lies. The north bay wlild fires have highlighted the health risks firefighters endure every time they answer the call for help. About 150 firefighters from the San FranciscoFire Department took part in a study following the tubbs fire. Preliminary results show some of them have elevated levels of mercury in their blood and a chemical found in their gear as well as the foam they use when fighting a fire. San franciscos fire chief says the study highlights a bigger issue. She says 54 of recent firefighter deaths have been attributed to cancer. And its time to do more to help them on the frontlines. But we have a responsibility to firefighters in San Francisco and really nationwide to do better for them in terms of protections. The centers for Disease Control is going to launch a registry for firefighters so they can track their health. The public had an opportunity to weigh in on pg es latest request for more money. Reporter well, when you look at it, dan, an average 10 hike or perhaps 20 over three years may not seem like a lot but ive been following the mobe and i can tell that you this is not the first or only proposed hike. Pg e executives came prepared to listen to their customers and try to convince them that the utility needs more money for wildfire protection. First came assurances from pg es new ceo bill johnson. That means it doesnt go toward the pay of my colleagues or me. Reporter the money would go towards their new wildfire safety operation centering that opened in march which includes weather stations and cameras in high risk areas. Pg e would also replace wooden power poles are more resilient ones and add covered power lines also in those areas. And finally, the utility has plans to manage vegetation around those poles. I dont know how many millions of trees in our system could potentially contact our wires. Were increasing the work around Vegetation Management to prevent those. Reporter pg e later told us according to their calculations, 120 Million Trees pose a risk to power lines. To do this work, pg e wants to increase revenue by more than 1 billion in 2020. Thats a 12. 4 increase. And 454 million by 2021 and 486 million by 22. Pg e assured customers today they would paid about 10 more a month the first year if they live in a typical residential home. The network reminded everyone more increases are imminent. This proposal comes on top of other rate increases currently being proposed by pg e. Shes right. Last april, the cpuc voted to allow pg e to recover some off the expenses incurred back in 2016 and 17 when the utility had to prune, cut back and remove dead or dying trees because of the states severe drought.
