Kevin brasser is from bay areas consumer checkbook. He joins me now. Lets begin with the very basic. What is dna Ancestry Services . Youre submitting your dna sample to there are lots of Different Companies that do that, about a dozen now, and they send you back a report that shows you your going back 500 years. Sometimes its even farther. Its based on the service. Can you trust them . Are they just making it up . Theyre not just making it up. The problem is a loft the services advertise they can pinpoint your ancestry and send reports with 11. 2 irish or 5. 1 middle eastern. And the problem is a lot of the companies arent really disclosing that there is a huge margin of error here. When they say that youre 11. 1 irish or whatever, well, no, the range is zero percent to like 30 , basically. Theyre using whats called a 50 confidence interval. Which means your not 11. 1 irish. Thats very unlikely. You might be a lot more irish. You might not be any irish at all. A lot of the Companies Really arent disclosing that to their customers. Some do a better job at that part than others. Ancestry dna, for example, you can click on each of your estimates and it will show you the range. And we think all the companies should be that straight forward about it. Again, because they make it seem like theyre being very precise and theyre not. In ireland, there are companies that say they can tell you what county. Yeah. The problem is if you think about it, the math just doesnt work out in these companies favor in being that specific. Going back 500 years, thats lots of generations. Thats lots and lots of grandparents. To say youre from this one town, maybe a few of your relatives were, but for them to narrow all your genealogy down to that point is a little silly. And its hard to know which of these companies are right and which ones are wrong. Its not as if theyre putting their methodology and their data sets out there for pure review or study. They keep these things very secret. So its really hard. And in our test, we had three people test eight different service, found that there was a lot of disagreement among the Different Services when they tried to be very specific about what parts of the say europe or africa or wherever. Let me jump in. Did any of the services say completely Different Things . Yes. And thats the problem. At a continental level, theyre good. Theyll know im mostly european and youre mostly european. And they knew that our test subject, who is african american, that she is mostly african, right. But when they try to be more specific in a regional level, thats when things fall apart quickly because there is this big margin of error. And they should be much more i think diligent about being transparent about the fact that there are these big margins of errors in the work theyre doing.
