Crashes in iran. Early reports indicate no survivors. Were live with the latest. Plus, the new Emergency Declaration in puerto rico after a string of earthquakes. The bombshell in major League Baseball. The new cheating allegations against the boston red sox. And Harvey Weinstein on trial. The cell phone habit that nearly got the hollywood mogul tossed in jail. Thank you for joining us on this wednesday morning. We begin with iran firing back launching more than a dozen Ballistic Missiles at u. S. Forces in iraq. But so far there are no reports of casualties. Those missiles rained down in the middle of the night in retaliation for the u. S. Drone strike that killed a top iranian general. The attack could signal a major escalation in tensions, but iraqs foreign minister said already he, President Trump, toned down his rhetoric last night tweeting, all is well. The rockets fired which were fired from these bases in western and Northern Iraq and abcs Serena Marshall has the latest from washington where the president will give a statement this morning. Serena, good morning. Reporter kenneth, janai, good morning to both of you. Iran promised revenge and quick to take responsibility for this tit for tat strike using surfacetosurface missiles but as you said, janai, so far no casualties reported. Iran striking back at the u. S. Launching more than a dozen Ballistic Missiles seen here in Iranian State tv video in what theyve dubbed operation martyr soleimani, revenge for the u. S. Drone strike that killed their top military general, qassem soleimani. The u. S. iran conflict playing out on iraqi soil targeting the roughly 1,500 u. S. And Coalition Forces stationed about 100 miles west of baghdad at al asad air base. Thats the same base President Trump visited in 2018 as his first to meet troops in the region. The president taking to twitter to respond writing, all is well. Assessment of casualties and damages taking place now. So far, so good. No u. S. Deaths have been reported. Officials saying there was enough of an alert the u. S. Troops were in bunkers at the time. Abcs ian pannell is in erbil. People were anticipating that there would be some kind of strike. Not so sure everyone expected it quite to come how it did, so we had these two separate strikes by multiple missile launches from iran landing in iraq. One was out in the desert in western iraq landing at the al asad base, some of those missiles missing their targets and also up here in erbil, less than two miles away from here we heard two explosions around 5 45 eastern time, another one 30 to 45 minutes later. Reporter irans foreign minister told Abcs Martha Raddatz they wanted a proportionate response but do not seek escalation or war. Are you concerned that a strong response from iran will end in an allout war . That depends on the United States. The United States took an act of war against iran. It will have to be prepared for the consequences. The iranians are saying that this is a great victory against the great satan. They announced almost immediately that they had launched those missiles into iraq. For right now the iranian Officials Say this is over for now. They are waiting for any kind of u. S. Response, and they say they will be ready for war, although its certainly my sense they do not want an allout war. Reporter iranian media quoted a top security official saying iran had 13 revenge scenarios, any of which would be a historic nightmare for america. The question now becomes how and if the United States responds. President trump announcing that he will address the nation later this morning. Kenneth, janai. All right, serena, thank you. Lets get more now on the message that iran was trying to send with these missile attacks. Abc news military analyst Stephen Ganyard says it appears iran was trying to inflict minimal damage here. If they had 13 scenarios, this was probably number 14. It just doesnt seem to make much sense. These are two very remote bases, probably the fewest number of u. S. Troops on them. If they had gone after any other u. S. Base in the region, they would have had a much better chance of harming u. S. Service personnel and so theres just a chance here, maybe the iranians intended to shoot into the open desert, to not harm the u. S. But to be able to go back to their own people and say we stood up to america. If thats true and the casualties theres no u. S. Casualties and that holds up, this just may be a chance to deescalate and avoid an all out war in the region. And as colonel ganyard was saying, this iranian attack may have been more about a show of force, but analysts say after days of making threats, President Trump is now faced with one of the most important decisions of his presidency, swing back at iran or walk away. Lets turn to the other breaking story also out of iran this morning, the crash of a boeing 737 in tehran. This was a ukrainian airliner. No survivors have been reported. Abcs Julia Macfarlane is following this story and, julia, tell us what youre learning. Reporter kenneth, janai, good morning. Well, the Prime Minister of ukraine just confirmed there are no survivors. He says the countrys embassy in tehran is now trying to clarify the circumstances of the crash. As the world watches the escalating tensions in the middle east, tragedy in tehran. At least 176 people on board a passenger plane died when the ukraine bound boeing aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff. The 737 plane left tehran this morning headed to kiev. According to the website flight radar 24, the plane stopped transmitting data at 8,000 feet and crashed just two minutes into the flight. Video from moments after the crash show several small fires at the scene. At sunrise emergency crews scoured the debris field. The area covered with twisted metal and large pieces of fuselage in a drainage ditch. The cause of the crash is not immediately known. [ speaking Foreign Language ] Iranian State run news reports the plane had a mechanical issue. This has not been independently verified. Boeing released a statement saying they are not aware of the media reports, and theyre gathering more information. The plane involved is a 737 but is not a 737 max that was involved in the two crashes in indonesia and ethiopia due to system failures. Again, the cause of this crash is under investigation, but there is widespread speculation the crash is linked to the missile launches from iran. Now, because the crash happened on iranian soil, iran will lead the investigation. Kenneth, janai. All right, and, julia, we also know the country where the plane was manufactured is entitled to participate in that investigation and that is the u. S. Julia, thank you very much. At the same time u. S. Aviation and Homeland Security officials are on alert. The faa joined the nofly zone for airlines to include iraq and the persian gulf. Here at home police in new york city say theyre closely monitoring the events in the middle east with enhanced security, and at the white house in washington, additional security has now been added. Experts say one of the biggest concerns right now is a possible cyberattack targeting the financial or energy sectors. Missile strikes were certainly intended to send a message to u. S. Partners in the region. That doesnt mean theres not a threat here in the United States. Iranian cyberattacks are still very much a likelihood, and even though we might see a temporary detente, iranian violence inside the United States against u. S. Interests in the future is still a possibility. It all depends on how we take the next steps and how the administration handles the iranian opening for a temporary deescalation. U. S. Officials have issued a warning about an unspecified threat to u. S. Ships in the persian gulf region. Stay with us for much more on the conflict with iran in just a few moments including the impact all of this could have on the u. S. Economy. But in the meantime, we are turning now to the weather. Lets take a look at your forecast for this wednesday morning. A quickmoving snowstorm snarled traffic in washington, d. C. The area there with crashes and spinouts. She wants to see the ground rules that Gop Senate LeaderMitch Mcconnell has in mind for the impeachment trial before she sends the articles of impeachment to the senate. Meanwhile, mcconnell dodged questions tuesday on whether the senate will vote on allowing witnesses to testify. And at least two skiers have died after a series of avalanches at a resort in idaho. Five other skiers were pulled from the snow in time thanks to other guests at the resort who were quick to respond. One of the survivors was found under nine feet of snow. One of the people she was riding with was the last person we found that was nine feet under and was still alive completely fine. Me and my dad talked while we were on our way but like the odds of someone being still alive after an hour of being under there are pretty slim. An hour under nine feet is incredible. Another skier wasnt found for several hours and died. Officials now believe all skiers caught in the avalanche have been found. Major League Baseball is investigating another cheating scandal involving a world series champion. The sports website, the athletic, reports members of the 2018 red sox used the teams video replay room to steal signals from opposing teams. The red sox ended up winning 108 games that year. S. , wall street is watching all of this.
