Health this could help slow the spread of covid19. We talked to people earlier this week about it and they seem to be getting used to the idea. That we have to protect our whole community. If that means wearing a mask, then if were going to be out, lets do it. Its hard times, but we all just have to get through it and play the game. It doesnt have to be a medical mask, just grab a bandanna or scarf that you have at the house and just cover up your nose and your mouth. And they say this doesnt replace the important element of staying six feet away from others. That is still a very effective thing we can do, according to Health Officials to stop the spread of this virus. But they also think wearing this mask will help and it is enforceable. So, if you dont have one on, if you ignore this mandate, it is punishable by, you can be cited and fined. Reporting live in lafayette, Amy Hollyfield, abc7 news. Happening today, we are expecting to get more information from Governor Newsom about the timeline for reopening the states economy and easing our shelter in place rules. Julian glover is live with the details and what some experts are saying about this. Julian . Hi, kumasi, good morning. We dont know if the governor will be giving an exact date of when those state level shelterinplace guidelines will begin to be laxed but we do know that testing is a large factor in that. It is something that he said over and over again in his daily addresses. We know experts are debating how much of californias population should be tested daily, but the reality is that testing must be ramped up quickly to meet demand. Newsom created a Testing Task Force two weeks ago. White house guidelines states can begin graalreopening if there is a decrease in coronavirus cases over 14 days. Check out this abc7 graph right here. It shows the cases in the greater bay area going back to march 1st, a month and a half ago, almost two months now. While we are certainly flattening the curve, cases are going up, even if moderately so. Practicing physical distancing has worked to keep those numbers relatively modest in terms of growth. But if we pull back too quickly, those numbers will go through the roof. Now, facing intense public pressure, states like South Carolina are easing shelterathome orders. Some Department Stores and stores reopen tuesday with 20 capacity and public beaches opening, too. Starting friday, gyms, bar barberships and even movie theaters. Governor newsom has given a great deal of power to local governments saying local government can ease local restrictions, as long as those dont intervene with state guidelines. A very delicate balancing act of getting californias economy back up and moving, us working. Some normalcy restored to life and, of course, weighing Public Health and public safety. Well have to see what he says today at noon. Reporting live, julian glover, abc7 news. You know, abc7 news will bring you the governors remarks live. So, i think ill send it over to kumasi. Perhaps she can take this up. Okay, friend. The head of the cdc is saying a second wave of coronavirus could be worse. Robert redfield says we could see the seasonal flu and a resurgence of covid19 at the same time in the winter. The cdc estimates that 24,000 me people died of the flu over the eight months of this season and at least 43,000 people died of covid19 in just two months. Together that represents a real threat to our health care system. Thats why we need to not only flatten the curve, but we need to raise the line to get our hospitals ready for what may be coming in the future. Redfield emphasized the importance of flu shots to reduce flu hospitalizations. He said it may save a hospital bed for your mom or your grandmother who may get coronavirus. Scared, stressed and frustrated. Thats how some Grocery Store employees are feeling as they go to work every day. One employee in the south bay has a desperate plea to shoppers. Stay home unless you really need something. On monday all of the employees at this store held signs for this photo. They said things like stay home, were in this together and social distancing can be beautiful. I understand people are having cabin fever and they want to get out, but theyre going shopping to get cookies and ice cream and spend an expunential amount of time in the store that is not necessary. Safeway reps have provided all employees with masks and added sneeze guards and oneway aisles. Democrats and republicans on capitol hill have come to an agreement on a new economic stimulus deal worth more than 480 billion. The Senate Approved the deal yesterday and the house is expected to vote on it tomorrow. About 383 billion would go to Small Businesses and fund the paycheck protection program. Were feeling our way along here trying to do the best we can to get money to our people and to our Small Businesses to get us through this period so that we can begin to get back to normal. 75 billion will go to health care providers, 25 billion will Fund Coronavirus testing. Everyone seems to have gotten word. We have been watching people go into this safeway since it opened at 6 00 this morning. Everyone has had on a mask. If you forget, though, there is reminders. A sign saying you cannot enter without a face mask. That is the new law going into effect today. You must wear them in Public Places when you go to essential businesses like Grocery Stores, when you head to the bank, when you head to the pharmacy. Now, if youre out for a run or a bike ride, theyre saying you dont have to wear one, but they want you to have it with you. Keep it near you in your pocket just in case you encounter someone. Children under the a one. But Health Officials say they do believe this could slow the spread of covid19. And people we talked to this morning, they seem, they say itser aits an okay thing to do. It doesnt bother me. It protects everybody. Theyre fine. Im okay with it. I think its necessary because people are not as responsible and people are super sick and probably the best thing to do right now. It doesnt have to be a medical mask. You can cover up with a bandanna or a scarf. Just make sure you cover your nose and your mouth and the key thing is still in place to stay six feet away from everyone. That is the effective thing that we can do, according to the experts. But theyre thinking wearing these masks will help, as well. Especially when youre in a store and if someone comes to reach for the toilet paper at the same time as you and you get a little too close. This is an extra protection and extra layer. It is official today and enforceable by law. But you could face a citation and a fine if you ignore this mandate. Live in lafayette, Amy Hollyfield, abc7 news. Thank you, amy.
