So far fewer than 13,000 San Francisco residents have been tested for the coronavirus, with 12 of testing positive. Currently, San Francisco has 26 testing sites, far below whats necessary to begin thinking of reopening the city. But there is promising news as these sites are quickly beginning to expand. Abc7 News ReporterLyanne Melendez has an update for us. Covid19 testing sites throughout San Francisco are collecting 500 samples a day, even though labs throughout the city are ready to analyze more than 4,000 a day. So where is the disconnect . The city says the lack of supplies and swab testing kits have been a challenge. But were moving towards that as we expand our capability, expand our testing site, expand our supply chain to make sure that we have all the reagents and materials that we need. Those with symptoms and close contact to someone infected continue to be tesd free. Added to that list will be communities with barriers to health care. Thats why this weekend ucsf will begin testing residents of the mission district, which has the highest number of covid19 cases. Today volunteers went door to door, letting people know about the four testing sites. They be located at garfield park, ninos unidos park, flynn and chavez. Some people register already on line, and some people, they didnt know about it. So thats why youre here . Thats why we are here, to help them. We have guide to bay area testing on our website, abc7news. Com. Hospitals are already working to recover from the coronavirus pandemic. We have Team Coverage on two big issues facing bay area hospitals. Abc7 News ReporterLaura Anthony is looking at concern about possible hiring freezes and layoffs as a result of whats happened. But lets begin with abc7 News Reporter chris nguyen with a look at how hospital workers are being tested to learn more about the virus. Chris . Well, dan, as hospitals try to get back to a sense of normalcy, theyre also trying to assure the public that they have protocols in place to keep the community safe, and that involves testing of workers. Following the anticipated surge that never came it is amazing how many hours people have been working and here and at home and on zoom, trying to prepare for this. Hospitals across california have now been given the go ahead to resume necessary surgeries and tests, many that had been delayed to free up space and resources in preparation for a covid19 onslaught. Its not time to become casual or complacent about it. We still need to maintain vigor and have a plan. But as california gets closer to flattening the curve, some people are still avoiding going to the Doctors Office for treatments. To ease fears, stanford says all the front line employees are being tested for antibodies and the covid virus. So far 3,000 workers have been tested and less than 1 have come back positive. We have universal masking protocols so that individuals are Wearing Masks and those individuals that come in are being asked to wear masks, while at the same time we do temperature checks on all of our employees that come in. In addition, surgery patients are now being tested for coronavirus a few days before theyre scheduled to come in for a procedure. It is safe environment. We are prepared for this. Its something that we do on a daily basis. Officials are stressing the importance of not delaying necessary care that could ultimately lead to more complicated or debilitating injuries or illnesses if left unchecked. I just want to reassure people there is no reason to be afra afraid. If you need to come to the hospital, come to the hospital. Well be there. And for those who are still concerned about visiting the doctor, stanford has also ramped up its telehealth offerings. Live in the south bay this afternoon, chris nguyen, abc7 news. Chris, thank you. Now to abc7 News ReporterLaura Anthony live in walnut creek today, where nurses trying to answer urgent calls during the pandemic are finding in many cases their Services Just arent needed. Well, hi, dan. This could be one of those situations where its a good problem to have, depending on your perspective. Hospitals here in the bay area havent really seen a significant surge. So there hasnt really been the need to hire extra nurse, at least not right now. But those sitting on the sidelines are growing frustrated. If youre a Nursing School student, a medical school student, we need you. The pleas have been coming from the top down since the early weeks of the coronavirus pandemic. Urgent calls for nurses to meet the need in expected surge of cases in california hospitals. Have i put in over 300 applications in the bay area. But the reality of trying to answer the call haseen ustrins anga laid her a bachelors degree and was president of her 2018 nursing class. But cant find work in a hospital. Its hard being a registered nurse, unemployed during a pandemic. It kind of feels like i guess being a firefighter. The house is on fire and im watching netflix. But john muir and other bay area hospitals just havent seen a significant surge in covid19 patients. They did, however, plan for one. Uc San FranciscoMedical Center is only about 2 3 full, with some 245 empty beds by design in case there is a surge. But with patient counts down, hospitals just arent hiring nurses. Right now its all about redeploying. Early on, we did reach out to retired nurses. We started planning for how can we bring new graduate nurses. And nursing students into our workforce, but we just have found that we havent had the need. Weve had the resources within our own teams to be able to manage the volume of patients were seeing. So not only are bay area hospitals not hiring new nurses now, there is some concern that there could be future layoffs. And of course the caveat in all of this is that there may be a need for many more nurses in there is a future surge of covid19 here in the by area. In walnut creek, Laura Anthony, abc7 news. Laura, thanks. A drug developed by foster citybased Gilead Sciences may not have helped coronavirus patients in china in early trial. But on that date, the Unemployment Rate was already up to 11 , meaning approximately 550,000 californians asked for but have not yet received benefits. Dan, that worker and a former state nursing home evaluator dont want to be identified so they can keep their jobs, but they want to share their concerns about Nursing Homes owned by prema and anthony. Residents and staff have been infected and more than a dozen patients have died. It spread really, really fast. A worker told me the outbreak began a full four weeks ago. With infected staff sentor homd ther for4ours i believe saturday andther nurse aehelp. E, there have b iues wi car a premd anthonys Nursing Homes. Records show they own gateway and six others. On several occasions the state denied their applications to open new facilities siting abuse of patients and lack of effective administration. Now with gateway on coronavirus lockdown, the worker says a shortage of staff has made it difficult for families to reach their loved ones, that there is often no one available to pick up the phone or handle messages. There was one that said the last time she wanted to speak to her husband fives bef passed. That was not acceptable. I asked about texts provided by a different member. As the coronavirusk hold of gateway, prema thekkek sent a message to other Nursing Homes. We immediately need licensed staff. If we dont have staff, we will be forced to move them to your buildings, then we will be facing more problems. Thats not right to warn someone im going send you covid patients. First of all, thats just rude. Theyre not just patients. Thats someones family. Is that appropriate . I really dont think so. Thinking former Health Facilities evaluator for the California Department of Public Health tells me moving staff between facilities can cause coronavirus. I think thats been part of the problem with Nursing Homes and the spread is that you do have staff that work in multiple buildings or for multiple companies. They faced a Class Action Lawsuit alleging failure to pay wages and overtime. They agreed to a 6 million settlement without admitting wrongdoing. After our interview, the nursing home evaluator got emotional. I was thinking last night, long lives matter too. And as a culture, i think were not recognizing that fully. And today the Alameda County d. A. s Office Confirmed to me that they are investigating into the deaths at gateway. By the way, ive reached out the prema and Anthony Thekkek preeptpreept repeatedly and left messages.
