We continue to follow the protests in the east and south bay over the death of george floyd, the man in minneapolis who died in Police Custody earlier this week. In oakland, protesters seemed to disperse around 1 30 this morni morning, about 5 1 2 hours of marching and demonstrations. No word yet on how many people were arrested during the protests. Police say they are investigating, though, an incident involving two Contract Security officers for the federal protective service who were shot. They say one of those officers has died from his injury. The other officer is in stable condition. This happened at the Federal Building on clay street at 9 45. The fbi says a person inside the vehicle began firing gunshots at Contract Security officers. Police say they are investigating to determine whether the shooting is related to the protests. Protesters were in that area. The federal protective service, which falls under the department of Homeland Security provides security and Law Enforcement service at Homeland Security. Well bring you any updates as we get it. Oakland police say no current protests are ongoing right now. Officers are still patroling the streets. Protests turned violent after demonstrators clashed with Oakland Police last night and shut down interstate 880 for some time. You could even see them running on to the street, almost getting hit by cars. Hundreds started marching around 8 00 last night. Thats when they began. The demonstration escalated about an hour later when officers lined up to block Police Headquarters then sprayed tear gas at protesters who threw bottles. Their condition is not known at this time but this is what it looked like at the start of the gathering. A peaceful protest at frank ogawa plaza. Several people spoke before they began marching. And take a look at this. This is how things turned, mercedesbenz dealership in oakland. Protesters went on to set some of the cars on fire. They sprayed graffiti on some of those cars. Really intense video there. No word yet on the cost of danl to that building or to the car. And looters broke into the target on broadway in oakland. You can see them breaking the glass outside that target inside theyre looting, it looks like, beer, took alcohol, some took video games. No word on how much was stolen from the store or what the damage is going to cost. And selfcell phone videos and photos are being posted on social media of these protests. Luz pena has more. Reporter many of these people have been using the georgefloyd, many asking for revenge. Many of the video i started seeing started around 3 00, many of them asking for them to meet at city hall in oakland. Crowds began to meet at city hall and quickly spread into i80 around 9 00 p. M. We have shocking video of protesters walking into incoming traffic in hopes to stop the flow of cars going 60plus miles per hour. We can see protesters almost getting hit by a chp officer. On the side of the freeway, protesters throwing heavy objects to the officers cars as they avoided the crowds. After several minutes of taking over part of i80, protesters began to walk down into the streets of oakland, where many can be heard saying, lets keep moving, lets keep moving and remember his name, george floyd, george floyd. Lets continue to the next video. This next video, we can see protester grabbing a chair, throwing it into the business. On the side we see protesters breaking a glass of chase bank in downtown oakland and see shattered glass on the ground as more protesters vandalize this bank. Fourth video, this crowd moved on to vamdi ivandalizing walgr r pharmacy. Looting and what seems like smoke inside this walgreens as crowds of people are rushing in. Similar to those scenes in minneapolis of protesters looting and starting fires. Luz pena, abc 7 news. This all began quite peaceful. Jobina was in oakland and described the scene there. Reporter everyone is moving alongside the streets, the crowds down here at 12th and broadway. I have to say for putting this all together today, so many people are here. Everyone has on their masks. People are even trying to social distance themselves as we move down the road. People are emotional. They want to make sure that their message is heard, and i think that its definite ly continuing to grow, people of all anal, all walks of life, coming down here from all over the east bay to oakland to be here for this moment in history really. And its not clear exactly where the crowd is marching to, moving down the streets in oakland right now. And im seeing on the ground what you all are seeing right now. A lot of people heard about this on social media. It spread pretty quickly, that 8 00 would be the start time for this. As far as why people are here, i think black people, brown people, allies are all deeply frustrated and hurt by what theyve been seeing across the country, not just with george floyd, and its reached a breaking point. This is generations of issues that have gone on and not been addressed and now its all coming to a head. Yeah, people are cheering. People are happy. People are outside of their cars, supporting the movement, honking their horns as we continue down the road. The crowd is getting toward the square and the crowd is specifically saying our street. Listen in for a minute. [ crowd chanting ] clashed with police after shutting down highway 101 last night. That demonstration started out as a peaceful protest but tensions ran high. A standoff at one point, you saw a protester charge at officers another place, sorry. That was individuvideo on the hf bashing cars. Officers started there was an exchange and clash between some of the police and protesters. Some of the officers grabbed the man and took him into custody. San jose police chief eddie garcia took to twitter to address the protests saying, quote, we will not tolerate lawlessness. And there was one Major Incident during the protest in san jose. Several videos, including this one here posted on social media, showing an suv barreling through a crowd of protesters at 6th and santa clara streets downtown. The person in the video appears to be okay, but we dont know the extent of any injuries. This video was posted around 9 20 last night. Sheriffs office says at 9 00 in the same intersection, a deputy was involved in the shooting. They did not say if this was connected to the car or provide any further details. The deputy is okay but again this is something we will continue to dig into and provide updates as we get them. Police and protesters faced off. His report from the streets as he was on the air yesterday afternoon. Here is a new thing, somebody thats happening right now. People are taking a knee. Probably 40 people right now taking a knee right in front of the officers. We dont have that shot yet on sky 7. Yes, now we see it. We see it. Weve got it. We see it. Reporter so the protesters have decided best to take a knee and not move. You have probably 30 people right in front of you and then behind the officers you have another, im guessing, 60 people also taking a knee, shouting i cant breathe. It has definitely escalated some. Ive got to say when youre feet away from a flash bang grenade, it will get your attention. Thats just what happened a few seconds ago. You can see a guy on the ground here. Weve got to clear out a little bit. You see theres another flash bang grenade. They are definitely police are escalating their response. They are taking more extreme measures to clear the protesters away. The protesters have picked up some of the tear gas, throwing it back at the police, going back and forth. Like i say now, theyre throwing tear gas in all different directions, over my head, down the street. The protesters are taking the tear gas canisters and throwing them back at the Police Officers. That is the sound of a flash bang grenade. That will do a very good job of clearing it out. My eyes are now burning from the tear gas. Wow sorry, dan. Ive had that happen to me before. Its no fun. Theres a protest sign on the back of it. Very dramatic reporting from dan noyse. A San Jose Police officer was injured. You can see hes lying underneath the car, but he is moving. And then three fellow officers, and it appears a bystander dragged that officer to safety. Wow around 7 30 last night, handful of protesters brought traffic to a stop on the upper deck of the bay bridge. Its unclear where protesters there were headed. A Police Officer in louisville, kentucky, fired pepper bullets at a news crew reporting live on a protest. Take a look. [ screaming ] reporter im getting shot. Rubber bullets. Rubber bullets. The bullets are being used to disperse people that have been protesting for two days now. Its unclear why they were being directed toward a reporter and her crew. Spokesperson for the Louisville Police has since apologized and said, quote, its not our intention to target the media as they are reporting this. This, after a cnn reporter was arrested. And at the cnn headquarters in atlanta, the building was damaged. Spray painted messages on the building and a car was set on fire before the scene was cle cleared. In new york city, violent protests continue there. This is what it looked like at Barclay Center there in brooklyn. Destroyed and burned police cars last night and several people were arrested. More than 100 protesters were detained outside Barclay Center for throwing bottles and other disturbances. About a dozen officers were hurt in the clashes with demonstrators. One person is dead after shots were fired into a shot of protesters in detroit. No officers were involved. Hundreds of people, though, took over the streets there and police have made several arrests as well. And for the second night in a row, protesters in denver, colorado, took to the streets again. They made their way to the state capital and then to the downtown area. And in oregon, protests in portland have led to the mayor to declare a state of emergency. There is now curfew ending at 6 00 a. M. This morning and starting up again tonight at 8 00. A state of emergency in portland. A lot going on. Protests across the country. Thats just a handful of some of the cities weve seen protests in overnight. Lets switch gears for a moment ago. We are expecting rain this morning. Lisa, i know youre tracking the thunder and the lightning, which both of us saw on our drives in this morning. It was pretty wild, wasnt it . Yeah. We certainly used the wipers. The pavement was wet. Meanwhile, joe biden addressed the country with live remarks from his home, saying he had spoken to George Floyds family. We see plainly that were a country with an open wound and none of us can turn away. None of us can be silent. None of us can any longer can we hear the words i cant breathe and do nothing. Biden then condemned the preside president s tweets. You know, this is no time for incendiary tweets. Its no time to encourage violence. This is a national crisis. We need real leadership right now. Pretty rare phenomenon this morning as we show you live doppler 7 in a moment. You can see all those lightning strikes. Go golden gate bridge, you see the clouds, hazy skies. We certainly have wet pavement out there. Winds are breezy, accompanying an area of low pressure. Most of the activity will happen this morning toward sunrise and then after sunrise, things will begin to quiet down. Were not eliminating the chance of showers or thunderstorms. You can see the winds up to 20 miles an hour through the next few hours. And they really dialed back throughout the day as this area of low pressure moves away from the bay area. We are certainly looking at some inclement weather and some showers. Used my wipers this morning out there and definitely could see some activity as we get towards the afternoon hours. Look at all the lightning strikes toward i5. Closer to home, middletown, around clear lake. As we widen the view, not a lot is happening to the south of the north bay. Bt as we look at the big picture, its incredible, isnt it . Look at all those lightning strikes from the sierra nevada, last night, this morning. Extreme northern california. A few of these slipping down into the north bay. Here is the area of low pressure. You can see that quite defined offshore. This is going to lift to the north. As it does, well begin to see the possibility of some showers over the higher elevations, a thunderstorm. But most of the activity, its not going to be a whole lot out there. Were going to be in the vicinity of the showers, a thunderstorm throughout the day today. Here is a look at walnut creek with all the clouds stacked up. It is 62 in san francisco, 67 in oakland. Quite mild. 63 in redwood city, san jose. Pacifica is at 60. A look at sfo, where its pretty quiet. Cloudy, 59. Petaluma. So with that area of low pressure offshore, the thunderstorms around, its a level one system with the scattered showers, gusty southerly winds. Higher elevations certainly could see thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. Theres our roof camera. Through the Morning Hours, sunrise till about now, 8 00, 9 00, were seeing the activity. And throughout the afternoon, a warmer pattern arrives. Wait till you see the temperatures inland by the middle part of the week. Here is a look at the pattern throughout the day today with the cloud cover. The showers here on and off. This is 9 00. Then weve got some sun in the east bay, the south bay, clouds in the north bay, the breezy winds and still a possibility of a few thunderstorms. In terms of our temperatures, we warm up on monday, were back to some sunshine. Look at tuesday. Mid 90s inland. By wednesday, once again, flirting with 100 inland. Cooler by the coast. With that rain we could see a tenth of an inch in some spots. Less than that around concord. Down to ben loman. Here is that level one system. Pretty interesting for the Morning Hours. Queerness and drag queens and lighting something up and being able to write someones name, pushing that all together was a eureka moment. And i just fell back in love with the material. I was like, oh, my gosh, this is what i want to venture into. Doing a show like we did at the gallery. We curated all these folks. Being able to put it and give them a platform that is really very different than we can experience in the social realm. Theyre so excited about it. I love neon because it demands so much from you. This is also, i think, why its such a beautiful material to teach. You have so many different facets that you can learn from or experience when you work with neon. Its also just like old school. New york has such an amazing history with neon. I love those old tropes or demarkations. Theres something that speaks to queerness in the neon. Neon is this other material and queer people or marginalized folks are living in this other periphery and those two things together really make sense and are really beautiful together. Neon sign starts out with a sketch. Youre able to follow that line with the glass and you get this elegant, beautiful line that becomes filled with neon. Once you get the finished piece, you put on electrodes. Then you can electrify it. Neon is great. You get to not only play with glass but electricity and design and art and theres all these layers to it that are really wonderfu wonderful.
