The mans struggle with police and the shooting caught on camera, you see it right there, an officer involved losing his job and the police chief resigning. This is a fastmoving story. This story was developing throughout much of the night as Atlanta Police identified both officers involved and released new bodycam and dashcam footage of the incident that led to more protests in that case. Some see it as another case of unnecessary and deadly force by police. On the heels of weeks of unrest, demonstrators gathering in atlanta overnight over the Fatal Shooting of 27yearold rayshard brooks. Police deploying tear gas as demonstrators shut down a highway and even setting this wendys the site of the incident on fire. The Brooks Family attorney speaking out about rayshards death. Before we even get into what happened last night, the one thing that nobody can disagree with is that it shouldnt happened. Reporter the Georgia Bureau of investigation is looking into the deadly incident tttart at the restaurant after Police Responded to a call about brooks who was allegedly asleep in his car, blocking the drivethrough lane. Newly released bodycam footage shows brooks perform several sobriety tests. Will you take a preliminary breath test for me, yes or no . I dont want to refuse anything. Reporter brooks reportedly failed. Officers claim he resisted arrest before a struggle ensued. Then police say brooks grabs one of the officers tasers. In this video, brooks is seen running from police. Appearing to the point taser at the officers. Then, the gbi said that officers fired three gunshots. Brooks family outraged by the video. He was not committing a crime. He wasnt burglarizing, robbing somebody. He wasnt do anything. Thats what hurts us more too, is the fact that we know this. So his life worth taking . Reporter the firing officer, Garrett Rolfe was terminated overnight. The other officer Devin Bronsan placed on administrative duty. This as the Atlanta Mayor announced the resignation of the police chief shields. Saying in a statement its time for the city to move forward and build trust between Law Enforcement and the communities they serve. The georgia naacp says Atlanta Police chief resigning is just one step forward. Its so important now because people are dying now. We dont have the luxury of waiting. And brooks death comes amid nationwide calls for Police Reform in cases of excessive force. And we have swift action in this case, the police chief resigning in this case and that officer fired all within about 24 hours. And across the country, the move for Police Reform intensifying. Reporter the group camping out. The governor threatening action. In asheville, north carolina, protesters attempted to block a freeway, before officers moved in, tearing down barriers. And in seattle for dade monsats this precinct. This building is the peoples. We pay for it with our taxes. Reporter the department surrendering the building after weeks of clashes. But as calls for Police Reform grow nationwide, another video made public appearing to show more excessive use of force. In connecticut, new haven police are seen violently throwing a handcuffed suspect to the ground ear earlyer this year, kicking him and pulling his hair. N wafound of palemonstrators de the sherif iniay saying, there was no foul play in robert fullers death. But overnight, local officials requesting the state attorney general oversee an investigation into his death. Now governors in states like new york and colorado are attempting to make change. We know that states have ramped up their covid19 testing which is going to make the number of cases rise, but several doctors that we spoke the across the the country say the effects of reopening are undeniable, that it has directly led to a jump in cases. With cases of covid19 rising in 22 states and puerto rico, utah, oregon, nashville, tennessee, and tucson, arizona, have hit pause on reopening and officials in several other locations say they may have to do the same. I am more concerned about covid19 in South Carolina than i have ever been before. Reporter South Carolina set a record for new cases on friday, then tied that record on saturday while in florida as miami beach is reopened for their first weekend back, the state has logged record darely case totals three days in a row. With a 35 spike between friday and saturday. In texas, they protested in dallas wearing masks, gloves and eye protection, but they both tested positive anyway. You can just think you have allergies because youre going outside, but you could be spreading a virus, and thats my biggest thing because its, like, we have to still take care of each other. Reporter for weeks, large protests over social injustice have taken over major cities. This morning, students at colleges and universities across the country are making sure the messages of antiracism echoed in the streets are now being heard on campus. Our institutions like to say avositiv reporter the Board Trustees of Clemson University stripping John Calhouns name from its Honors College after nfl stars Deshaun Watson and Deandre Hopkins who went to the school joined over 20,000 others to sign a petition demanding it be renamed. Calhoun the former Vice President was a staunch supporter of slavery in the years leading up to the civil war and clemsons campus was built on his plantation. People ask questions like, when do we stop taking the names off of buildings at universities . My response to that of course, is when there arent any named for slave holders. Reporter others stepping up and calling for changes at Texas University as well. A group of nearly 40 student athletes have written a letter calling for sweeping changes, including renaming several buildings and replacing the school song the eyes of texas. The Los Angeles Police protective league and the San FranciscoPolice Officers associations want to improve outcomes between Police Officers and this air communities they serve. Here are some of their promises, a National Database of former officers fired for gross misconduct, a in the use of force standard that emphasizes deescalation, ongoing crisis intervention for Police Officers and a website that is accessible to the public on use of force analysis. In a statement, the three unions said in part we believe that each of our departments has made tremendous strides in strengthening accountability, transparency and adopting policies that reduce the number of severity of uses of force.
