Arizona and texas set new state records for covid19 hospitalizations. Whats your overall take on the rising number of cases and what people need to know regarding the precautions they should be taking . Yeah, so i think an important thing to remember here is that when you see the publicly reported cases rising, theres a lag time to that. Because people dont really seek care, they dont seek testing, until theyve started having symptoms. That means they might have been transmitting the virus to others for three, four, five days or even more. So when reported cases are rising, the actual cases are probably actually ballooning much more than that. So i think what that means for the general population is it might be higher than it appears. So crowded areas are going to be much more dangerous. Especially if youre a highrisk individual, that means youre elderly, pregnant, you have preexisting conditions. If youre an area where those rates are rising, i would be very cautious about public interactions in general. Were hearing that more places are banning those popular masks that have valves. Are they less effective than regular masks were seeing on the streets . Yeah, definitely. So this is a really important point, actually. So the key here is to remember that the mask that you wear is to protect others, the mask they wear is to protect you. This makes sense if you imagine somebody coughing in close proximity to you. Even if youre wearing a mask, those particles can get on your face and in your eyes. Touch your face later, transmit them. But if they are wearing a mask and they cough it goes directly into the mask. These masks with valves are ow g directly out. And in many cases theyre designed for construction environments. That makes sense, youre trying to protect an individual from particulate in the air, but they dont work for infectious disease. Definitely, definitely a mask with a valve, an expiratory air flow valve, theyre not appropriate for this, theyre not going to keep people around you safe. Playgrounds are starting to open. Besides social distancing, any guidance to parents . Yeah, certainly you want to pay close attention to any guidance given by your local Public Health authorities. Whether or not playgrounds are safe in the first place is going to be based a lot on the local , inction rate.
