The lake fire is at 0 containment right now. Crews expected that number to change overnight, but they have not given an update so far. Originally an evacuation shelter was not established because of covid19. Evacuees were told to stay in their cars. But overnight, a shelter was opened. It started north of santiaa clari clarita. The Sheriffs Department says the remote location and terrain is making ground efforts difficult. So there is a tremendous amount of fuel loading on those slopes and again with the remoteness and the terrain, it will be really challenging. Arenin the sitti eve increbl vee received. There are more than 500 firefighters out there right now working to get this all under control. They are coming in from agencies across the state and outside of california. It is back to school in contra costa county. A lot of districts start the new year with Distance Learning today as more classes resume around the bay area, education and keeping our kids safe is taking on a much bigger role as we build a better bay area. Reporter yeah, Distance Learning and getting it all figured out has been such a challenge that here in la fayette, they are starting schools two days later than originally planned. They took two teacher workdays scheduled for later this year, they bumped them up to this week so teachers could have more time to get ready for scaDistance Learning. Distance learning is starting today in san ramon valley, orinda and la fayette. Those districts have been sending out emails and tweets about how this will be different but they will get through it together. And administrators say this experience should be an improvement from the Online Learning that happened in the spring and that students will be in a Virtual School online 8 00 to 2 00 every day. In a given class period, we expect 50 to 60 of that time would be the teacher directly talking to the kids, instructing them, working with the kids. The rest of that time while kids are in class, maybe independent learning, group learning, one to one time. Reporter they do plan to adjust the online time based on age saying older kids will be in front of a screen longer than the younger wiggly ones. They know this is not ideal, but everyone is doing the best they can. And they will not be penalized for any technical issues. San Jose Unified School District returned to school yesterday. 10,000 chrome books and ipads had to be distributed ahead of time for Distance Learning. However there were a few glitches getting students signed on. I think that it is again the first day jitters and i think were all excited but were all nervous and we know that it will be a big learning curve for all of us. San jose unified says it spent around 3 million for professional staff to teach online and to provide social and emotional support. Close to 5 million has pain invested chrome books and hot spots.
