We got an update that the fire is 21 contained, only growing less than 1,000 acres throughout the day on wednesday. Weather once again playing a role in making the firefight a success. To allowed the firefighters to work some controlled burn operations to protect the areas of felton and also ben lomond. But as firefighters make progress, evacuation warnings and orders are slowly being lifted. So good news to the north, Santa Clara County no longer being threatened by the fire. And to the south, uc santa cru he eva w have firing operations where we fight the fire with fire and make that buffer around the different communities and eat up that unburned fuel before the fire gets to that location. Reporter wednesday cal fire was busy clearing the interior roads of debris like these large red woods we saw leading into felton. Maybe also taking out power lines as well, creating hazards for so many of s gets them closer to the front lines and also better access on to many of the interior parts of the fire zone to be able to further assess the damage. Cal fire saying that work now 55 complete and we know some 590 structures confirmed destroyed. Again, they say that number only expected to go up. Well have that briefing for you live at 6 00 a. M. Today the National Guard will be on the front lines battling the lnu complex fires in the north bay. This fire has scorched more than 360 thourk acres and is 33 contained. Learning to hike up and down, getting the shelter gear on within 30 seconds, learning how to dig the line, laying the hoses. Reporter david chang is in charge of the National Guard troops who have traveled from all over california to help fight the walbridge fire. This is my first fire mission. We currently have about 300 soldiers that are here and i would say about a quarter too to a third of them have participated in the previous one. So we do have some experience. Reporter the wind has really picked up here which is creating new problems on the east side of the lnu complex fire where there are now new evacuations. However here in Sonoma County, the wind could actually be beneficial. On the south side of the fire, it is essentially backing into the wind. So we want to take advantage rg of those opportunities where the winds are in our favor and humidities are up and use the crews to put containment line in place. At the live desk this morning, im tracking hurricane laura, the catastrophic storm made landfall overnight bringing with it torrential wind and rain. Well take a live look at the storm zone, this is along the coast in texas. Right now you can definitely see that it has become overcast even in the last hour. The hurricane has weakened to a category 2 storm. Damaging wind gusts are lashing eastern texas and western louisiana. There is extensive damage in some areas. Laura hit the gulf coast as a category 4 storm. Trees violently shook, windows were blown out, cars toppled over. Nearly 300,000 homes and businesses in the region are without power. Residents are being warned that lifethreatening flash flooding is about to happen. This is dangerous, dangerous storm surge. And in some cases here you look at some of these values, it is not sush survivable. They say expect storm surges of up to 20 feet, and that will cause catastrophic damage to both coastlines. Along with low lying communities up to 40 miles inland. Major flooding will not fully recede for days and more than 580,000 coastal residents were ordered to evacuate. National guard troops will be on the front lines today against the lnu lightning complex in the north bay. Evacuation orders have been reduced to evacuation warnings in parts of napa county for this complex. The fires have burned almost 361,000 acres. However, containment has grown to 33 . 250 members of the National Guard have been gearing up and training for the last few days to join in on the firefight. And a second website is now up and running showing the homes that have been damaged or destroyed in the north bay. It is pretty similar to the Damage Assessment map for the czu complex. Red means the home has been destroyed, orange means there is significant damage and yellow means minor damage. Green means very little damage.
