Now from abc 7, live breaking news. A night of protests across the nation and the bay area after only one officer in louisville, kentucky is charged in the Breonna Taylor case. Not for her death, but for endangering her neighbors. At least two officers have been shot tonight in louisville during a protest. Both officers are expected to recover and a suspect has been arrested. Whose streets . Our streets. A huge crowd protested in new york city. No justice, no peace. And in washington, d. C. And here in the bauer. Say her name. Breonna taylor. Say her name. Breonna taylor. Good evening. It has been a tense day that started with a grand jurys decision this morning. Protesters took to the streets of louisville within minutes to express their disgust and disappointment. The lone officer charged in the case is already out on bail tonight. Abc News Reporter zohreen shah tell us the investigation into Breonna Taylors death is not over. Reporter tonight two Louisville Police officers shot, protests turning violent after a grand jury indicted one of three officers involved in Breonna Taylors shooting, but bringing no charges pertaining to her death. Both officers are currently undergoing treatment. We do have one suspect in custody. Reporter multiple people detained. The National Guard in place as demonstrators clash with Police Despite a strict curfew in place for the next three days. We know the answer to violence is never violence, so im asking everybody, please, go home. Reporter former officer brett hinkenson charged with allegedly endanger taylors neighbors, charged with three firstdegree counts of wanton endangerment. He fired his weapon ten times, including from an outside sliding glass door and through a bedroom window. Reporter tonight out of jail on a 15,000 bon. The grand jury finding the other officers involved in the raid gone wrong in march used their weapons justifiably. Detective Myles Cosgrove who fired 16 times, Sergeant John mattingly, six times. Taylors boyfriend Kenneth Walker says he fired a warning shot from his legally owned gun. Saying he didnt hear Police Announce themselves when they barged in to execute a search warrant. Mattingly was the only officer who entered home. Sergeant mattingly saw the mans gun fired, heard a boom, and immediately he was shot. According to officials, officers then opened fire, killing the 26yearold boro tonight the president weighing in on the charges. Kentucky attorney general Daniel Cameron is doing a fantastic job. I think hes a star. Reporter his democratic opponent saying he hasnt seen the full report, but urging protesters to stay calm. Do not sully her memory or her mothers by engaging in any violence. She wouldnt want it nor would her mother. The fbi told abc news they are looking into all aspects of taylors case. Theyre also consulting with the justice department. They want to know that the search warrant that officers used was legal. Zb zb a crowd marched to Police Headquarters and faced off with dozens of officers. Some demonstrators blocked access to 580 and other streets. They took a knee in the streets, beating drums and chanting. What do we want . Justice. When do we want it . Now. And about 100 protesters marched through the straieets o San Francisco tonight in the mission district. The group went by the Police Station on valencia street chanting Breonna Taylors name. When they reached their destination, there was a rally calling for the defunding of the police department. Dozens of protesters gathered outside San Jose City hall this evening. The crowd grew to around 200 people at one point. Many people hell signs as they chanted black lives matter and Breonna Taylor. There was also a when it got dark, demonstrators painted a justice for breonna mural. A short time ago we did get video of protesters setting a statue of Thomas Fallon on fire in downtown san jose. They also sprayed graffiti on it. He was the mayor of san jose and his statue has been a source of controversy. The Latino Community said hes a symbol of the repression of mexicans. Families in the bauy area whose lives have been directly affected by Police Shootings gathered today in a show of solidarity with Breonna Taylors family. Most of us here in oakland, sadly, pretty much knew what the outcome was going to be. The officers werent going to get charged. Oscar grants uncle has been an activist against Police Brutality ever since a b. A. R. T. Police officer shot and killed his nephew on new years day 2009. I have a lot of anxiety that im afraid that thats the same thing thats gonna happen with eric. Reporter that was erics sister. He was killed by chp officers in oakland in june. I just wanted to to be here today and just express my frustrations with them. Reporter the group shared their fear and their anger. What we bring all these families together, its undeniable what is happening when it comes to Police Murder in this country. Reporter activists also say they stand committed to the cause. We should, however, continue to be enraged, right . And weve got to figure out what comes next and how we continue to organize and protest and tear down the system. The return to school during the pandemic is a big part of our efforts to build a better bay area and while some local School Districts are preparing for inperson instruction, as abc 7 learned, many teachers say the risk is simply far too high. Reporter the Napa County Office of education and four of its county School Districts are taking on hybrid learning. Theyll incorporate both distance and inperson instruction beginning october 26th. Were starting very slowly. We want to make sure that we have everything perfect because the most important thing is the safety of our students and our faculty. Reporter county superintendent of schools dr. Barbara nemko says it will be a phased approach, primarily two days a week with a morning and afternoon cohort. Meantime, the California Teachers Association is calling on the state to establish basic safety protections and secure testing to prevent the spread of covid19. We have to have the testing. We have to have the contact tracing. We have to make sure we have the ventilation, the ppe, all of those things in order to go back to whats best for our students. Reporter while cta president boyd says whats best is inperson instruction, he says the lack of federal support is making that a difficult assignment under the pandemic. I would say for the safety of our students and our members and their families, there is no compromise. Reporter but others see potential and say theyve developed a safety plan they think will work. They need the social interaction. All the social and emotional skills that are hard to get when youre all by yourself in your house. So we want to do it. Weve been working towards this for months. In the east bay, Oakland Unified School district superintendent issued more details on potential inperson learning. Alameda county is now in the red tier, and after two weeks there, inperson learning can resume if the county allows it. But superintendent Johnson Tramel says its unlikely most if not all instruction will remain distance learning, at least through december. That is the expectation. While there is, unfortunately, obviously a lot of patients struggling with covid, the number of patients with cancer is not going away either. Reporter dr. Heather greenwood is a ucsf radiologist, she specializes in breast imaging as well as diagnosing and treating Breast Cancer. Several models that have been published from the National Cancer institute suggest that from breast cans . Colon cancer alone related to the pandemic in the next decade, therell be 10,000 more deaths that are just related to the fact that people arent coming in. Reporter back in the spring many breast imaging appointments, mammograms and ultrasounds were cancelled in accordance with lockdown guidelines. Officials at the Science Museum say it wont reopen until next spring due to safety concerns because of the pandemic.
