Kpt x plori exploring with tr. We start with tourism here at home. Joining us is jean with visit oakland. Thank you so much for taking time out for us today to talk about this. Le lets start with oakland and tourism. October was a very important month for oakland and Alameda County. The Health Department deemed it safe for hotels to reopen for Leisure Travel and very important for restaurants to be able to reopen with indoor capacity up to 25 . Things are slowly and surely changing in oakland and so hopefully it will give locals a lot of opportunity to enjoy the holidays coming up. Youre so groacious. I mispronounced your name. Its john paul. I do want to ask you, given the fact that oakland and Alameda County in the orange tier, a lot more opened. For folks that hadnt considered oakland as for as a month ago, what is now open to them . Are some of the new opportunities you encourage them to explore . So i can talk big picture. Oakland airport has been open and were seeing an uptick in flights and Oakland Airport is offering for flights that are going to hawaii and we launching direct flights to palm springs on november 12th. I mention that all Oakland Hotels reopened for Leisure Travel and go ahead. Please. Oak. And so that means our local hotels from the airport to downtown have opened with specific brand safety guidelines, everything from conta contactless check in, which is a really cool future to the typical Hand Sanitizer stations and masks, et cetera. All right. For our oakland attractions, Oakland Museum of california is expected to announce the reopening to the public later on this month just in time for the holidays. The oakland zoo, which opened a few weeks ago is doing a boo at the zoo halloween event tomorrow and an event in november, december and january. Its still a tough time so we want to show as much love to the local businesses. There is a web platform called spend stay live to find on visit oakland and has a list of local Retail Businesses and locals might want or need to spend their money. There is a really cool new website thats been created by an oakland local called keep oakland alive like the anti amazon. We encourage everyone to check these two websites out. I know oakland has amazing designers and just really creative artists. Good stuff. Real quickly, this is a great time to stay case. Like folks in Sonoma County or santa cruz that dont want to fly, what are your favorite oakland spots and why should they take that onehour drive to visit oakland . I love a lot of the downtown Oakland Hotels. The hampton inn in downtown is one of our newer properties. Really great views of the city if anybody wants to see the Tribune Tower up close and person personal. I love the restaurants. The fruit vail in particular has some of my Favorite Places and this week is actually started restaurant week. They have a dead celebration commemorating the last ones beginning in november and another really cool thing that i love to check out is this new outdoor Farmers Market and its a platform for black and brown businesses and then now, also that we are able to open wineries, i definitely suggest a lot of people to check out what is listed on our urban wine trail i think the moral of the story is too many great things to feature. Thank you for coming on the show. Thank you for having me. Take care. All right. Lets bring in drew tuma for a little trip, not to oakland but to the airport. Unless you went to Oakland Airport and im sure about that. This is ill really fascinated by this. This is about your trip from the car to the plane. Yeah, larry, almost like you know we did go to Oakland Airport and wanted to know if you could get to the gate without touching anything that you did not bring from home. The answer might surprise you. Some folks may opt to fly during this holiday season. Now, passenger loads are not expected to be anywhere near years past but if you choose to play at Oakland International airport to show you the experience you can have to keep you safe during the pandemic. If you opt not to take a ride share, the first point of contact is the parking lot. Its a contactless experience from entering to exiting. A ticket will automatically come out as you enter the parking lot, when youre ready to leave, use your credit or debit card without touching a single thing. If you take bart, as soon as you exit the station, there is Hand Sanitizer waiting for you. Your next stop, heading into the terminal. Our next area is ticketing and thankfully, its 2020. So a lot of us check in on our phone and grab our boarding passes. However, if you do have a bag to check, a lot of airlines have kiosks where you can print your bag cage tag, put it on your luggage and drop it off. Of course, there is Hand Sanitizer. So your next stop is going to be security. Unfortunately, the Oakland Airport spokesperson wont let us tape it. Youve got two options. Youre either in general boarding where you have to go through that maze, take off your shoes and touch a bin to put your Electronics Inside of to go through the xray machine or you have beautiful tsa precheck where you dont have to take off anything and walk on through. Either way, on the other side, there is Hand Sanitizer. Now when it comes to finding water, if youve brought your own water bottle, youll likely find these touchless filling stations. Okay. So youre in the terminal and youre thinking i want something to eat or drink. Well, in covid times not everything is going to be open. Some things will be. However, good idea, check your airports website to see what is open and when. Whatever you grab to eat or drink, there is Hand Sanitizer. So youve made it to your gate. And you sit down. There is measures in place that no one sits next to you and you have a safe distance from your neighbor while you wait for your flight to board. When time to board, the process is contactless. Take your paper boarding ticket or phone, scan it and of course, there is Hand Sanitizer. So if you decide to travel this year, there are many ways to keep you safe as you go from your home to your destination. So drew larry, the moral of the story is if you have to touch something that you didnt bring yourself, youre never far away from the Hand Sanitizer. I cannot tell you how many Hand Sanitizer stations i counted in the airport and there were a lot, larry. Thats what i was going to say. My take away is you spent a lot of time around Hand Sanitizer. But i did. I just took a flight from hawaii and came back, obviously. It was the airport was deserted. I was at sfo and shocked it was still seven months into this, i dont know how long weve been into this. Were you surprised how empty the airport was . Yeah, it was a similar story in oakland. Not that many people and a wide variety of comfort levels. Folks just wearing a mask to folks in full on hazmat suits. I think people were just finding a way that they felt comfortable flying in this time. So i think the airport officials just want us to know that if you do fly, there are measures in place to keep you as safe as possible. Yeah. Thank you, drewment. I saw a guy on my flight that looked like he was going to the moon. You dont really have to do that. Yeah. Here is a look at our lineup for the week today as we continue to build a better bay area. The same for churches, museums and movie theaters, bars and breweries can open for outdoor only service. Wineries can open indoors at 25 capacity. So thats what is allowed but dan, what would you be comfortable with . Its interesting. As this pandemic has dragged on, i think its what is it, the date today, march 225th or Something Like that as ive heard it described. We still have to be reminded to be vigilant but you get a little more comfortable and relaxed as long as youre paying attention to social distancing and wearing a mask. So i didnt go out to eat at all for months and in the last five, six weeks have gone out a couple of times. Im getting more comfortable, as long as people are paying attention to the possible safety rules. So i think as time has gone on, ive my tension level has eased about it. Drew, what about you . Yeah, i tend to agree with what dan is saying and i think i just worry that we might get complacent as things ease a little more and i hope people realize were still living with this virus so we still got to keep up the measures that brought us to this point. I hope people keep doing what they are doing to keep themselves and others safe. The vatican calling on the leader to change the conversation about coronavirus by wearing a mask in public.
