As coronavirus cases surge, pfizer announced today its vaccine candidate has been shown to be 90 effective in its phase iii trial. Abc 7 news contributor joining us with more on that. Doc, this sounds really encouraging. What is next before we get to mass distribution . Well, whats next, first of all, larry, is we have to make sure that this trial the data actually holds up in terms of longterm safety and efficacy. So thats why, you know, pfizer, which this is great news, will submit their data to the fda for emergency use authorization. The fda takes a few weeks to approve it. If everything goes according to plan they start that mass distribution. And as you can tell based on our population and the fact that this requires two doses, theyre going to need millions and millions of doses. So people are projecting maybe late spring, early summer. Well, we got a ways to go then. But you bring up the question i wanted to ask is, weve got over 300 Million People in the u. S. There are billions worldwide. Everybody needs the vaccine. Some will take it. Some will not. How difficult is it going to be to try to supply enough doses for everybody that wants the vaccine, given that you do need two department osages . Larry, offhappennd you can de simple math and say it would be difficult to get that sheer amount of vaccines manufactured. Pfizer is only one company. Theyre saying theyll be able to get over a billion doses ready next year. Now, heres the things, heres a little optimism in the science. The type of technology being used for this specific vaccine for pfizer is an mrna vaccine. Its a genetic vaccine which basically gives your immune system a blueprint, if you will, for how to fight the coronavirus. Several other companies out there using a similar technology. What people are hoping is that pfizer has kind of set the standard and other companies will also be able to get vaccines ready for approval. Maybe that means more doses are around, but i think the really important thing, two things, number one, we can take a moment and celebrate the science, but number two, we still have a full winter to get through before we have widespread distribution. So we still have a lot of work to do. Yeah. I dont want to get too deep into the science because most of us havent gone to med school, but can this technology it sounds like yes is going to be the answer here, more or less replicated by others working on their own strategies and their own vaccines. Well, larry, i dont want anyone to downplay your scientific knowledge because youre pretty savvy, sir. Oh, please. Other vaccine manufacturers are using this is an mrna vaccine. There are other companies out there, moderna is one of them using an mrna vaccine. We even heard dr. Anthony fauci say this is not only a really good, positive step in terms of this specific trial, its a great sign for the other companies. Remember, earlier this summer the fda was saying that any vaccine that was shown to be 50 or more effective could qualify for emergency use authorization. This one is over 90 , roughly. Thats more than the seasonal flu vaccine, in line with some of our childhod vaccines. Thats an incredible number. Yeah. But on one side you have to have the effectiveness. The other side is the safety has to be approved. And thats what has been kind of a stumbling block for some of these other vaccine candidates. Where you have deviations in some patients having some other symptoms. The safety has to be established as well as the effectiveness, correct . Absolutely. The safety and the longterm effectiveness have to be established. And i really, really hope everyone out there who has possibly questioned vaccine safety or had, you know, some doubt about the process now sees how much work actually goes into making sure that vaccines are safe and they work. Because any time there is an adverse reaction or a hiccup, te process stops. These companies are openly saying that they dont care about politics. Theyre not trying to rush anything to some finish line. They want to make sure it works. So this Pfizer Vaccine could absolutely get halted by the fda at the end of november. We dont know. Or Something Else could come out later. All were saying right now is that if you compare in this group, compare the people who have gotten a victorious versus those who got placebo or didnt get the vaccine, there is a clear difference between who is getting covid and who is not. Okay. We only have a few seconds left, but we reported earlier on the Covid Task Force that president elect biden has put together. I saw you tweet earlier in the day. This is like a dream team of doctors. What makes you so excited about this group thats been assembled . Larry, its the 1992 basketball dream team. Im excited about it because they represent a huge range for people who understand immunology, vaccine science, Public Health, distribution. They represent people who have been working in this arena before. Youve got the exsurgeon general, marcella nunezsmith. You have zeke emanuel, one of the architects of obamacare. People who worked with leadership before. I encourage everyone watching right now to go read up on that task force and look to see who is out there making sure that we take the right steps under this next this next presidency. People will be pleasantly surprised. The dream team. Which one of those doctors is jordan . Which one is Michael Jordan . Just so i know which doctor to look for. You got the three chairs. You got the three chairs. Dr. David kessler and dr. Marcella nunezsmith. They can be the jordan, scottie pippen, mj, whoever you want from that dream team. Okay. Jordan, magic, bird would be my choices. Done. Thank you so much, doc, for your time. Thank you. All right. Time now for the four at 4 00 as dan and spencer join us and today Governor Newsom announced some california counties are moving backward perhaps in the states covid19 tier system. Thats something obviously we didnt want to see. Officials blaming increased transmission rates on private household gatherings. People letting their guard down while getting together with family and friends. Really concerned as we get closer to thanksgiving. People welcoming loved ones traveling from out of state, kids coming back from college. Officials once again stressing the importance of Wearing Masks. You know, i was out this weekend very briefly was in a supermarket. Everybody had their masks on. So thats the good news. Spencer, i know you do a fair amount of traveling back to the east coast to see your grandkids. What are you seeing . Are people wearing their masks and how concerned are you about the spike . Well, looks like back in the northeast, in the new england area, from new jersey and new york up into new england, looks like almost everybodys Wearing Masks. So theres widespread compliance there. Here locally, you know, i go into the grocery store, i see almost everyone wearing a mask. Or if i go into a coffee shop to pick up a cappuccino. When my wife and i go out to dinner, we see lot os people on the street not in San Francisco but in the east bay where we live. Lots of people on the streets walking the streets, strolling along with no masks on, and thats kind of concerning. Yeah. Let me echo that, larry. I went out to dinner dont go tout dinner that often. Went out very safe. Felt very safe. Socially distanced dinner. Driving through in the east bay in downtown walnut creek, past a club, kind of a night spot, and it was packed. I mean, cheek by jowl with younger people. Most wearing a mask, but a foot apart. And no social distancing whatsoever. Yeah. Its not a surprise. Were going backwards. Everyone thought this might happen as Colder Weather kicks in and hasnt even really kicked in yet. Once there are no or few options to be outside, could be a big problem. Right. You know, its not just what we see at the grocery stores. Everyone masks up there, but you see on your own facebook feed. Sometimes gatherings of ten people of friends posing for pictures without masks and right next to each other. I see those and never know whether to like it or not. You want to like a friends post but then youre saying, wait with that behavior. Yeah. Health officials from every bay area county are urging people to avoid traveling during the holidays. If you do decide to leave the bay area, its recommended you selfquarantine for two weeks when you return. For those who are going to have some sort of gettogether, Health Officials have this advice, keep the gatherings small, short and try to hold them outdoors, if possible. You can celebrate virtually, which is another way to make sure traditions live on while staying safe. Another idea, you can do a drivein event. Dan, you got something planned out yet . Well have immediate family like our kids come over. We wear masks most of the time when they come over, but, you know, in truth, the kids have been tested quite regularly, and we still try to maintain some kind of social distance, even when were with family who dont live with us, but we will not be having friends over. We have not had friends over. We have nod gone to anyones house during this whole time. Weve been to dinner a handful of times, but, again, with very strict protocols. Its going to be hard. Listen, were all getting sick of this. Its eight months of being careful. Its easy to let the guard down, especially around the holidays. One last thing, with word of a vaccine, people get optimistic, hey, were almost out of the woods. Thats the light at the end of the tunnel, but thats a long tunnel before the vaccine helps us. So true. Spencer, what are your plans . Yeah, a scaleddown version of thanksgiving. A skinny thanksgiving were calling it. Just absolutely immediate family. People who have, you know, been in the house, been tested, who go by all the protocols. Small, small gathering. Yeah. Yep. I dont have any friends left. So its not really a concern. Thats easy for you, larry. Yeah, no, simple. Spencer mentioned skinny. Which flows right into this story. Earlier you heard Michael Finney talking about mcdonalds planning to launch a vegetarian option early next year. Theyre calling it mcplant. A burger could also be chicken substitutes, which i assume will taste like chicken. And meatless breakfast sandwiches. Beyond meat helped create the mcplant. Mcdonalds one of the few major chains that doesnt currently offer plantbased alternatives. I think burger king has the impossible whopper made from the company, the big rival of beyond meat. We established earlier that spencer and kristen and i dont eat fast food. Which takes us to dan. All right. You knew you could count on me. This is your this is in your wheelhouse. Yeah. So are you inclined to try the mcplant . No. To be honest. Now, listen, ill have a hamburger, but i never go to fast food places. Nothing wrong with them, its not just my cup of tea anymore. So i dont often do that. Listen, if i am going to mcdonalds, im going to get the fries and i probably want to me, its a treat, not a choice. But im glad theyre offering healthier options for people who do choose to eat more fast food, you know . Yeah. Thats great. I would just say one thing when you look at these substitutes, you got to check the sodium sometimes. Thats true. Sometimes the sodium can be really, really high. Not that much heather. Im no doctor, but i can read the sodium numbers. Sugars in a lot of the foods, too. I think spencers with me, you know, if were going to have it, have the real thing. Im not really into substitutes. Most of the time ill choose a salad. If i want a juicy burger, im going to go for the juiciburger. Its a treat, not a daily thing. Speed is no issue when it comes to Organ Transplants in italy. This is pretty amazing. State police in italy use a lamborghini with a refrigerator in its trunk to transport organs. In this instance they used the lambo to take a kidney to rome. The supercar that can hit 200 miles an hour made the sixhour trip in just two hours. So you know the italians arent the only ones who turn to supercars for lifesaving missions. Police in dubai use a buy whats your take on it . Well, i guess if anyone can do this, im not surprised that its the italians. Ive driven on those freeways there, and, you know, its miles and miles of straight highway. And people seem oblivious to any speed limits. So apparently they have the vehicles that can deliver in a short time. So italian. Delivering organs with a sense of style and speed. I love it. Yes. I think we should do that here. And i want to be the first to volunteer to drive the lamborghini or whatever it is. Not to donate an organ. Oh, thats what i thought, dan. I was like, larry, how kind. Im doing it for the people. I want to try to help. Just bring that car around right here. Youll see the blur in the neighborhood will be me. So, larry, you want to be in the car just not in the cooler . In the car. Id prefer not to be in the cooler, yes, thats correct. Yes, id prefer to be driving. I should make that clear. Probably the only time you can speed in a lamborghini and not be pulled over by a police officer. Exactly. You go ahead. California phones offers free specialized phones.
