We have some scattered showers from midmorning to mid afternoon with another tenth of an inch of rain possible. Lets go down and you can see on highway 4, 580, 680, the tri valley if you will, down through the sunol grade and into the south bay is where we have the steadiest of the rain. That is going to move out right as we get towards the end of the morning commute. You can see right there in san jose, the light rain falling on 87 near the shark tank. Another mild day on tap. Temperatures mainly around 60 to 64 degrees. Well give you an hourbyhour look at the showers coming up next. All right. Thank you. This morning covid19 cases are going up in all 50 states. More than 2 million americans have tested positive so far this month making november the worst month yet of this pandemic. Jobina is at the live desk with how hospitals are coping with all of this. The covid19 tracking project reports that more than 77,000 people are currently hospitalized with the virus. Many hospitals are at 100 capacity with new cases breaking records every day. More states and cities are imposing restrictions, but at least a dozen states are resisting mask mandates. We need to turn things around over the next few months or else we risk hospitals to turn patients away. Were also seeing a lot of people getting tested because they want to have license to go socialize with each other. And unfortunately that is not the phase of the pandemic that we are in right now. Testing sites across the country are also overwhelmed. The u. S. Has reported more than 150,000 newly diagnosed infections for five days in a row. Kumasi . Thank you. In the east bay, Health Officials are acknowledging that some people will likely gather with people outside of their household for thanksgiving. So they set up this testing before turkey option so that you can get tested before and after the holiday. One pittsburg family taking advantage of this. They lost their grandfather to covid three months ago. They are going ahead with the meal. Its only two households. Maximum ten people. We still want to be safe. Anyone who lives or works in Contra Costa County can get access to nocost convenient covid19 testing. The results from the testing sites come back in less than two days. Were learning more every day about the longterm effects of covid. A stanford professor says he tested positive in march and now eight months later he says he can still only focus for 45 minutes a day. All of a sudden i found i couldnt concentrate anymore. It was difficult to read even. You would see words on the screen but you couldnt interpret them. The longterm effects continue pushing him to make a tough decision and taking a sabbatical year to recover. Experts say the longterm effects of covid are still a mystery. The doctors say this is a result of a postviral inflammation and its basically your own bodys immune system reacting and that it eventually should mostly go away. But it can be a year or more. What hes doing now is rationing those 45 minutes a day to still help his students even if it means he has to take a mental break two to three days. Going back to the classroom in San Francisco even as we experience this uptick in covid cases. The School Board Just set a january date. But there are still so many questions about how or even if this is going to go forward. The abc7 reporter Julian Glover is live with the vote and the remaining obstacles. Julian . Good morning. Lots of questions and also many concerns from some teachers and parents. As we know, some San Francisco unified students could be back learning in the classroom as early as january 25th. The board unanimously voted in favor of that timeline in a meeting on tuesday night. Now the first batch of students to return would be preschool, kindergarten and first graders. Students having the toughest time learning remotely, those with moderate to severe disabilities would also be in the first group. About 10,000 students in the first phase. So much still needs to be figured out like how many parents are in favor of sending students back to learning in person versus those preferring virtual learning. The district plans to send out a survey to parents to hear what they have to say. I implore you to consider for the wellbeing for all, from students to school safe. If its not safe to dine indoors, its not safe to return to school per normal. This resolution needs more voices from parents and teachers who directly work with the students. Some parents and teachers are concerned about safety, and another challenge, sfusd has to reach an agreement with teachers and staff about working conditions and the district is also in the process of inspecting each school to determine if theres proper ventilation in place and planning social distancing protocols. So much still up in the air. San francisco just rolled back to the red tier and restricted additional activities just days ago. And before any of this becomes a reality, the county Health Department has to sign off on the districts reopening plan before those students would return on january 25th. Then if all goes well there additional grades would be allowed to return to learning in person. Reporting live this morning, Julian Glover, abc7 news.
