A sweet update to a story we told you about last month. 9yearold reese and her family lost their home in the creek fire. Maybe you remember seeing buster posey alongside me. We were on a zoom call and we completely surprised reese to the point where she was speechless because buster is her hero. She received a collection of 25,000 Baseball Cards meant to replace her collection lost in the fire. Reese decided she didnt need all 25,000 cards so yesterday, reese along with some of her friends and cal fire crews handed out some cards with baseballs and other memorabilia to families affected by the creek fire. Reese plans to send notes of encouragement to other kids. Shes fantastic. She is. Larry, this is the best thing youve ever done, connecting them and this story keeps on giving. This is great. All right. The annual there you are. No, seriously, larry, that was great. I loved seeing that. You know what . Shes only 9 years old but reese is mature beyond her age to the point where she immediately thought of okay, i got these cards. Let me make sure some other kids that really want them get them because ive got enough for me. Thats really touching. That is the holiday spirit. All right. The number of people involved is scaled back and the new York Police Department is discouraging people from coming down to see it in person. Well, definitely this is a new way to holiday this year. What do you tell yore kid youry they cant see their grand pararernpar parents for thanksgiving and why everything is different. Joining me is dr. Bernstein. Let start with talking with kids, whats the most important thing for parents to say especially for the little ones who may not understand covid and all the ramifications . Well, i want to highlight that before were getting to the what do parents say is really how do parents listen . Bcause a lot of what were going to say to kids will be guided by things their saying, especially younger children as they tell you you got hair growing out of your ears, theyre also going to tell your their truth about how they feel. If they can open ears up to listen to their concerns, that can guide the things that youre going to say and to help them understand what is going on if you match what their fears are and how and what youre going to address. Okay. So listen first. So lets say they are concerned or confused about why i have to do a zoom call with grandma and grandpa this year. How do you help them cope with the disappointment . Yeah, and i think a lot of younger kids and older kids and adults are slowly kind of acclimating to what is like our new normal. So having these conversations and listening to whatever it is their disappointment is, we want to match obviously develop mentally to what it is that were going to say. From a younger kid they ask the question why am i zooming with my grandparents . We want to be direct and say there is a lot happening in the world. We can talk about the pandemic. We dont want to lie. If we seem like were too fraud to talk about what is going on thanks can contribute to increased anxiety in kids. So we want to say this is going on and these are our limitations and saying this might be hard for us as individuals for us and modelling that healthy coping. It is sad that or disappointing that we have to talk to grandma and grandpa on zoom as opposed to meeting with them. Im sad about that, too. Lets have that conversation and what are some things that are maybe within our control that we can do . How can we make this special so that it doesnt feel like were dotely missing out on whatever tradition might be. What about creating new traditions . With thanksgiving, were used to a lot of families do the same thing over and over and youll cook this and ill cook that. New traditions . Could that help . Yeah, and especially if we think about things that are in our control versus things that are not in our control and so much kind of feels like it outside of our control right now. The nice thing about new traditions is it can make everybody feel more secure about what is in our control. Other than it might be something you might do ten years from now. Who knows. You cant predict how the traditions will stick or not but it gives us an opening to think about things in a different way and as opposed to thinking about all of the things that i cant do and all of the things that im missing out on and the ways my traditions arent happening, i can say this is the struggle. Im disappointed. This is really hard for me, and im able to do Something Else that i think might bring me some joy, make me feel like im in control and make me feel connected to other people. Give me one suggestion for a parent. One suggestion for, you know, for thinking about doing a zoom with grandparents for example, you can think about maybe dressing up and that might be Something Like you might make it a formal dinner, even though it over zoom and you might think about what are we going to wear . That gives a kid choices. Do you want to wear this shirt or that shirt . A kid cant control talking to a person in person or zoom but i can decide the fancy shirt or shoes im going to wear for this zoom dinner so it feels special and connected and feels like were doing something out of the ordinary from a zoom call with your teacher. Its a different day. Its something thats special. Yeah, and it gives them some control over, you know, i can wear this or that. It gets them involved in the Decision Making process. Maybe that will help a little bit. Dr. Bernstein with the child mind institute. Appreciate your time and have a happy thanksgiving. You, as well. Thank you. Some grandparents from texas found a safe alternative to share the holidays with their family in marin county. Take a look. They wanted to spend some time with their grandson noah at thanksgiving dinner. So because of covid that wasnt possible so they did the next best thing. They ordered two sixfoot cardboard cutouts of themselves you see here and mailed them to their daughter mindy. My mom was saying its been a year since noah gave her a hug. That chokes me up and wants to make me cry. Then, you know, i think its awesome you get these giant sixfoot cutouts and its impossible not to laugh. It kind of breaks the tension and its just, you know, its just such a, you know, goofy but serious reminder that this is but a blip in time. Great idea. Missy says the cutouts relieved some pandemic stress. The cutouts will be celebrating christmas with her grandkids this year. That is really cool idea. Two Bay Area College students are partnering with a downtown san jose coffee shop to help feed people who are in need and there is a lot this year. A few days ago, gonzalez and lauren opened this Community Refrigerator outside paper moon cafe on north second street. Its the First Community fridge in san jose and the idea is really simple. Anybody can drop off food to donate and anybody can grab food if they need it. When we first started, people are like are you sure its free . What is going on . It take it is a little bit to get the idea. Now that weve been here a couple days, there is people who come and take regularly and give regularly. The organizers are accepting cash donations and produce, canned food and other staples. You can find out how to help at their instagram account, San Jose Community fridge. The give away at sacred heart are taking covid precautions seriously. The distribution is almost entirely no contact. Sacred heart still needs more ham and more turkey donations to respond to what they say is an overwhelming need this year. Obviously, a lot of people are needing help this holiday season. Elected officials should be held to a higher standard. Why are case rates out of control, spencer . The people who are trying to tell us what to do dont even follow their own rules. Set a good example. Set a good example. This is not good imaging or whatever you call it. No. No good. They should be held to a higher standard, larry, or at least the same standard to use a not quite thanksgiving reference but good for the goose is good for the gandar. Since friday, about 5 Million People have passed through the tsa while that sounds steep, here is a comparison. Yesterday about 900,000 people were screened compared to 2. 5 million last year. There was no pandemic then. Spencer . I mean i guess ideally we would like to see the smaller number. Some people are trying to do the right thing so limiting their travel, thats a good thing. And youll never get 100 compliance. If you can stop the rush of people that will normally travel will make a difference and if those who are traveling at least follow all of the procedures, safety precautions to the letter that will help, as well. Yeah. For sure. Its you again, kristen. It is . I just did one. Thank you, larry. I know. I know. That was a dramatic pause to think about it was dramatic. [ laughter ] it was. We wondered what was going to happen. Okay. This thanksgiving is obviously going to look different for a lot of people. No thanksgiving with family. No friends giving with friends and colleagues. Some people think there is a silver lining. The survey Commission Found many are looking forward to wearing sweat pants and slippers to thanksgiving dinner and only having to deal with the inlaws via zoom and 60 said their most relieved to skip on washing dishes. Thats a silver lining, dan. I have to say, i got a new pair of slippers not long ago. True. I may have to try them. We have to adapt and choose to let it completely define the holiday for us or make the best of it. To the best were able to grin and be happy for it and enjoy the holiday because despite everything weve been through, there is a great deal to be thankful for. Absolutely. What i want to know, larry, are you wearing sweat pants and slippers now . How do we know youre not . Maybe shorts. Maybe. Maybe. I can neither confirm nor deny. Exactly. [ laughter ] because we wouldnt be able to unsee it. Yeah, thats for my larry after dark website. Anyway, now back to a story we told you about earlier in the newscast. Probably a good time to move it along. A federal judge said california cant ban vanity license plates that are offensive to good taste and decency. Hey now. The ruling comes with a lawsuit filed on behalf of five people denied permission for their plate messages including a gay oakland man that wanted to use the word queer on his license plate. Dan, what are your thoughts on this in particular because some of us have plates that are custom. I have a vanity plate, yes, but its not offensive and you wouldnt know what it means. Id say all of us here working in this profession are First Amendment people. We needs rules. I cant be offensive but for a bunch of burro cats to decide what goes on a 7 x 4 inch license plate what were bombarded with images and words all the time, something whizzing by on a car, obviously, there are lines but lets not go overboard. I think the decision makes sense. Spencer, do you find dans license plate offensive . I dont even just tow it. I dont know what it means. Thats true. Im not offended at all. I want a license plate that says sunny. Thats it. I like that. Im doing the dramatic pause again. Yeah. Its okay. All right. We feel the drama. Kristen, any thoughts on dans license plates or anybody elses . Dan is not offensive and anything that he would put out there on a license plate would not be offensive. Thank you, kristen. Agreed. When its up to an individual to interpret it. Anyway, thats all the time we have it all can get so out of control sometimes ] you can lose your faith you can lose your mind lose your grip get stripped of your pride till you dont know how youre gonna stay alive hey, hey i got you i will give you what youre needing ill be right there i got your back i got you between the pandemic and politics, sometimes its hard to avoid doom scrolling.
