Where will the cameras go . How will they work . Abc7 News Reporter anser hassan has the story. They held signs telling drivers to slow down. It was part of a vigil on saturday to honor guadalupe berrones mendez. She was killed in september by a speeding driver in oakland. We have no choice. We have to cross these streets so. So lets just make them safer. A new bill signed by governor gavin newsom is attempting to do that with speed cameras. This is fantastic news that Governor Newsom signed. This speed is the number one cause of severe and fatal crashes here in San Francisco and in the state as a whole. And cities need more solutions. Martha lindsey is with the group walk San Francisco, which has been pushing for safer streets. San francisco, oakland and san jose are three of six. California cities that will install speed cameras to catch speeding drivers. The cameras will be installed in high accident areas, school zones and where street racing is popular. New york city and many other cities around the country have shown incredible results with speed cameras, and its changing behavior and that is what needs to happen. People need to drive slower. Its not about giving tickets. Its a Pilot Program that will last several years. Violators will get a ticket in the mail. Fines range from 50 to 500, depending on speed. Its absurd to me that we continue to do the same thing and expect different results. Kat brooks with the anti policeterror project says there is data that shows that automated license plate reader programs dont work. Although this legislation has specific provisions on who can access the data, brooks and many other Civil Liberties groups have concerns over privacy and how that data may be used. Its tied to a fiscal incentive to ticket and find people, and that compounds the poverty that our most marginalized communities are already living under. Other versions of this bill have failed, yet supporters say revisions in this bill do more to address targeting low income residents and privacy. This bill, and i think this is why it got all the way to the governor and was signed has been really carefully crafted in terms of privacy. And it takes a photo of your license plate just like crossing the bay bridge or the Golden Gate Bridge right. The Program Begins in january when San Francisco anser hassan abc7 news car enthusiasts can now breathe a sigh of relief after California Governor Gavin Newsom legalized low riding cruising on friday. And by afternoon in, well see the sun burning through, giving us a mainly sunny late afternoon. And itll be the beginning of a warm up as well. Overnight low temperatures will range from about 54 at Half Moon Bay to 57in San Francisco. Upper 50s, mainly around the bay shoreline and mid to upper 50s in most inland areas. Tomorrows highs 65 Half Moon Bay, 72 here in San Francisco, mid to upper 70s around the bay shoreline inland east bay low to mid 80s. Also low to mid 80s in the south bay. But a bit cooler in the north bay where most locations will be under 80 degrees tomorrow. Now we get a little bit of a different dip in temperature on monday. Just a brief limited cooldown, highs reaching into the upper 70s inland. But then on tuesday, high temperatures bounce back to mid 80s inland, then on wednesday, even higher up to about 90 degrees. So we do have a warm up coming our way. Heres the accuweather seven day forecast. A few clouds will move in also monday with that brief cooldown on there may be a sprinkle or two in the north bay but were not really talking about any measurable rain, certainly not area wide. So the warming trend resumes on tuesday and look at wednesday and thursday. Inland highs, 90, 92 degrees mid to upper 80s around the bay mid 70s on the coast on thursday, were talking mid to late october and weve got beach weather coming our way. Wow. Thats something i dont think we have to wait till 2046. We just traveled to another section of the world. Thats it. So lets plan it out. We go like 20 hours somewhere else. As we continue to celebrate hispanic heritage month, were featuring a bay area baseball coach whose leadership is helping student athletes succeed. Abc seven News Reporter luis pena met with coach david esquer from Stanford University. Diversity in the dugout is still pretty rare in college baseball. Youre about to meet the first latino head baseball coach in Stanford Universitys history. Field has been a part of david eskas life. I was fortunate enough to take a lot of habits that i have as a as a as a man today from my experience on the stanford baseball field, whether its just the hard work or being on time, you know, just just being uncomfortable with people who accepted mediocrity. I was i was around a lot of guys that were shooting for the top. Esker gre up in salinas. My mother is from mazatlan, mexico, and she came over when she was about 14 or 15 years old. And my dad was born in california, but both his parents were from mexico. I dont think i knew my father ever to not have oil in his finger under his fingernails. Extremely hard worker. My mom was the same. My mom worked at peter paul. Shes a factory worker. Holidays were spent either with tamales at my at your aunts house or making them at your house. I love that. Do you know how to make tamales . You know, i. I i generally know how to make them. Okay. Okay but my wife, my wife teases my mom. That thats the last piece of being accepted into a mexican family is learning that tamale recipe in high school isgur thrived academically and as an athlete becoming class valedictorian and athlete of the year. Getting into stanford was a dream for him and his family. My father went a little bit to a junior college, but neither of them graduated from college and so to have that opportunity, they were going to make sure that i took advantage of that, an accomplishment that came with a financial sacrifice. It really hit me when i came to stanford. I think my parents would write a check for me for tuition, and its the most money i ever saw them spend at one time in my whole life. I had a lot of respect on on what sacrifice they made to give me the opportunity to come to stanford in the fall of 1983. Isgur stepped onto the diamond at Stanford University with a clear goal to make the team. I wasnt recruited, no. I walked on at stanford and i graduated from palma high school, had no scholarship offers anywhere at and decided that i would come to stanford and try out for the team. But eventually, by my senior year, i was the starting shortstop and we won the National Championship my senior year. Many of the traits he applied on the baseball field, he learned in salinas on a different type of field. I spent a summer working in the lettuce fields. You know, a friend of mine whose father was a farmer said he was putting together a college crew to work in the in the in the fields. The college crew consisted of about four college people, and the rest were migrant workers. And it was it was a great experience, you know, very, very humbling. So i learned to never just be be above hard work. Esker went on to play professional baseball for four seasons, but this field would call him back throughout. Out our interview, stanfords Maintenance Crew was on the field and unexpected reminder of how far hes come. Youve stepped on that field for over three decades as a college athlete. Now as the head coach, but also as a groundskeeper. Oh, yeah. What theyre doing right now, ive been on that mower. Ive mowed the outfield grass. Yeah. Everything that theyre doing right now, ive done and it just it just all added to what i was going to be prepared for. You know . So i have, i have experience on almost every level of this organization from the very bottom. I how did that happen . How did you become the groundskeeper here . So i was playing professional baseball after after college, i got a chance to play professional baseball for four years. And in between, i mean, i was i was coming to graduate school here, so i was working on my masters degree. So after the season ended, there would be some time where school wasnt in session. And the coach asked me if i wanted to work on the field. And so i started by just turning on sprinklers. But then it moved on to he would he would he would tell me, you know, hey, ask her. Can you mow it for us . Nearly 30 years later, that same coach, mark marquess, would advocate for esquer to take the helm of stanford baseball. Esker coached 18 years at uc berkeley, where he was the 2011 National Coach of the year. But in 20 1718, he went back home to stanford. Like this is where you used to sit, when you used to be a player here. Yeah. And now youre the head coach. Yeah. Yeah. Its pretty surreal to be in charge of the program, especially one that had the success that we had had under coach marquis. Having him really kind of stand up fome as well. When he decided to retire, taking the torch from coach marquis, who was here for 40 years. He was my coach and who was the second father to me. But just having that opportunity, im pretty blessed. Esker has been stanfords baseball head coach for six years and he already has the highest winning percentage in School History every win celebrated with a selfie. Weve been to the College World series the last three years in a row, which which no one has done. And you had a lot of success this year also with several of your players getting drafted. Yeah, we had, i think nine, nine players drafted and all of them signed. Tommy troy was a first round draft pick. We had the player of the year in the conference, alberto rios this year was our latino, a latino. Talk to me about that. Oh, just one. One of the greatest stories in college baseball. He was a much like me. He was he was a non scholarship player and he had to wait his wait his turn. He waited for two years, didnt play much. This is the first year he played full time. He was the player of the year in the conference was drafted by the by the anaheim angels in the third round, signed for a very good bonus. And hes off playing professional baseball right now. Did you see yourself reflected in rios . You know, a little bit, just about the amount of time he had to wait. I did not see myself in the sense that i was not the player of the year in the conference. And so you did not get the bonus . I did not get the bonus that he did. But i was i certainly was glad to witness it. And hopefully be a little part of it, a sense of family is what he strives for his team. I learned the lesson to treat your family like friends and your friends like family. And i feel that the camera chaudhary kind of bleeds over onto your team. Hard work and perseverance are the pillars hes built. His career on. I dont think anyone could have ever seen. And im sure the coaches at stanford didnt think that the mexican walk on shortstop from salinas would eventually be taken over the program. This field has witnessed every step. What do you see when you see this field . You know, i see i see a place where kids are going to grow up. How a bunch of players in their own little world develop the habits that that would teach them to reach for excellence. In palo alto, luis pena, abc7 news. What a special story right there. Some days feel like summer, some days feel like winter. Some days you dont want to get up. Yes exactly. Heres a look at whats coming. Our way. J. R, weve got clouds that will be thickening overnight. High clouds mainly, but some low clouds at the coast as well. So the day will start off with sort of a gray, dreary look, but itll get sunnier in the afternoon tomorrow. So thats the good news. Overnight lows will be mainly in the upper 50 soquels mid to upper 50s. Highs tomorrow, mid 60s at the coast. Thats not bad. Thats pretty mild for midoctober. Mid 70s to even upper 70s around the bay shoreline low to mid 80s inland. So a pleasantly mild day. But as you look at the accuweather 70 forecast, you see itll be partly cloudy and a few degrees cooler on monday and there may be a sprinkle or two up in the north bay, but were not talking about any significant rainfall. Then it starts to sunny up and warm up on tuesday and the remainder of the week is going to feel rather summer like especially wednesday and thursday with inland highs at or above 90 degrees, mid to upper 80s around the bay shoreline and low to mid 70s on the coast. Midweek next week. So weve got some nice warm weather coming our way. Were thinking about the skis now. Im thinking about the beach again or water skis. There we go. Maybe a little of both. Yeah.
