A cold front move through here in the Early Morning hours and in the wake of that front, we have cooler air that has moved into northern california. So later on today, its a mostly sunny day. But your temperatures, you are just stuck in the 60s today. So below average. But it is a nice looking afternoon. So expect a lot of sunshine after that crisp start this morning where areas are in the 30s and 40s 65 in the city today 67 in oakland, 70 in san jose, 66. In napa, up to 69. In concord. Reggie drew, thank you. Were going to start with a mass shooting in maine at least 16 people are believed to be dead in the small town of lewiston. Dozens more are hurt. Jobina is at the live desk this morning. And jobina, the accused gunman still hasnt been found. Yes, reggie, so a mass search is underway right now for a person of interest. They are looking for 40 year old robert cod. Police say he has a history of being in the military. He also is a firearms instructor and was treated at a Mental Health facility over the summer after allegedly saying he was hearing voices. The deadly attack unfolding in lewiston, maine, the states second largest city, with Police Responding to shootings in at least two locations. As the first call came from a Bowling Alley hosting a youth night for a kids bowling league. One witness says she heard a loud bang before her father retired. Police officer corralled her and her family into a corner. I kind of like laid on top of her. And my mom was kind of on top of me. Riley dumont was bowling with her 11 year old daughter when she heard seven shots during the chaos. She said she saw three bodies or even four on the ground in that area. The second shooting happened at a local restaurant about four miles from the Bowling Alley. This morning. A shelter in place order remains in lewiston and neighboring lisbon, maine, where police say they found this white subaru, believed to be owned by card. The white house released a statement offering full federal support in the wake of this horrific attack. Officials say they are now expanding that shelter in place. Advisory to include the town of Bowdoin School is in the area will also be closed today. And theyre planning a News Conference for later this morning. So we continue to watch this closely, gloria. All right, jobina thank you so much. The bay area pilot accused of trying to shut off a planes engines as it was heading to sfo is expected to appear in federal court in portland today. Thats where the plane diverted. And Police Arrested 44 year old Joseph Emerson late sunday. Emerson was in Court Earlier this week and pleaded not guilty to the 83 attempted murder counts. That is one for each person aboard that flight. Emerson was hitching a ride in the cockpits jump seat when this all allegedly happened. The fbi affidavit says that emerson suddenly said, im not okay before trying to pull the handles and hes also accused of trying to open the exit door. Emerson told police he thought he was having a nervous breakdown and that he hadnt slept. In 40 hours. A court is set for 2 00 this afternoon. This morning, the situation in the gaza strip is growing more dire. The un agency for Palestinian Refugees has issued a warning saying it is on the verge of running out of fuel. The agency says the development is forcing it to sharply cut back relief operations across the region in the territory has been blockaded and hit by devastating israeli airstrikes since the deadly attack launched by hamas militants on israel. Israel is accusing hamas of using fuel for its operations instead of providing that fuel to hospitals. As a qatari Officials Says, International Efforts to secure the release of the more than 200 hostages taken by Hamas Terrorists during the siege are making progress. Yesterday, President Biden reiterated his he is urged but not demanded that israel delay its planned Ground Invasion of gaza to allow additional time to get the release of israeli hostages and allow aid into gaza. Israel has the right and i would add responsibility to respond to the slaughter of their people. But that does not lessen the need for to operate in a line with the laws of war. The president is calling for a concentrated effort by the worlds leaders to work toward a two state solution. He added. There is no going back to the status quo as it stood before the hamas attacks that killed more than 1400 people in israel on october seventh. And as we know, the war is having an effect on communities right here in the bay area tonight. The Jewish Community will come together in San Francisco, Keneseth Israel chabad is hosting a unite for israel event to pray for the safety and security of jewish people in israel. It will include a candle Lighting Ceremony and vigil. Everybody is welcome and the event starts at 8 00. Jewish students at uc berkeley are planning to rally tomorrow. This comes after hundreds of people rallied to free palestine on campus thursday. Three free palestine. Three free palestine. Several palestinian campus organizations put together this event. A small group of jewish students were also there. We spoke with someone who is helping organize tomorrows rally. She says some of the chants made her feel unsafe on campus. The chance that theyre using from the river to the sea. If you were to ask any of these people, what does that mean for the jewish people who live there . From the river to the sea means annihilation of all of them. That means executing every single jewish person. We dispute this claim because what from the river to the sea and what all of 48 means is that palestinians have a right to return to their homes. This right is enshrined in International Law in the Geneva Convention on some of the participants wore masks because they didnt want to be identified. A jewish owned ice cream shop in San Francisco was vandalized and tagged with pro palestine graffiti. This is video of smitten ice cream shop on valencia street. It was boarded up after the windows were shattered. According to the website mission, local, the window that was not smashed was covered in graffiti that read, quote, free Palestine Mission local reports the stores owner is jewish. State senator scott wiener tweeted about the incident, calling the actions antisemitic. This morning, an unfortunate update to an already tragic story. It involves a hit and run crash in the south bay that took a pregnant womans life. This happened on tuesday night near the oak ridge mall. The medical Examiners Office has confirmed to abc seven news that the womans baby also died despite doctors efforts to try to save the babys life. Abc seven News Reporter lena howland is live in san jose right now with what weve learned about the investigation and the people in the car that hit her. And lena, this is just such a tragic story. It really is. Gloria and doctors were originally able to save the victims unborn born baby on tuesday night by emergency surgery. But just after her family and friends gathered here for a vigil in the intersection where it all happened, we learned the baby passed away today. According to our media partners, the mercury news, the woman has been identified as 21 year old april ziegler. Police say tuesday night her car crashed with a stolen sedan. Two men then ran away immediately after the crash. Mayor matt mehan says this tragedy could have been prevented be honest, when i heard the news, i was just stopped in my tracks. Frankly, im also angry. We see far too many traffic related accidents. The best information we have right now is this involved a stolen vehicle and speeding. The crash marks san joses 43rd traffic death of the year at this time last year, the city had 57 traffic deaths. The victims family asked for privacy during this time at this point in time, San Jose Police have not made any arrests in this case. Youll keep it on for much of the morning. Its a nice looking day. We have a lot of sunshine on the way. Its just in the wake of that front, temperatures will be below average today. So bright skies today. A chilly start. Temperatures maxing out in the 60s. And as we take a look at the three day forecast, we have some chilly mornings on the way, especially saturday morning. We have a cold start where we could have some frost advisories popping up. But we do have a minor warmup as we head into the second half of the weekend. It is a very messy situation there. Traffic crawling in the westbound direction. This will significantly impact anyone that is headed from the east bay into San Francisco, coming out of oakland, emeryville or berkeley especially. So we do have a crash reported. Its going to be on westbound 80 right at the fremont street on ramp there and the on ramp has now been shut down. So your speeds are going to be around 14mph just as you make a pass. Treasure island in the westbound direction. Well let you know when it clears. But at least one lane is blocked right now in. Emergency crews are there because were talking about 4 or 5 vehicles involved in that crash. This may not come as too much of a surprise, but at the Richmond San Rafael bridge, we still have that sigalert in effect, three lanes blocked in the westbound direction. Investigators say 18 year old Jason Walizada from antioch was arrested and booked into jail last night. The shooting happened this past saturday night in oakley. Police say the 16 year old boy who was killed was a student at liberty high in brentwood. The suspects bail was set at 1. 1 million. State lawmakers are asking the california Highway Patrol to help with the ongoing Public Safety crisis in antioch. More than half of all Antioch Police officers are currently on leave after a massive investigation involving racist texts and violent tactics. The city has been struggling to respond to basic Public Safety needs, with only 4 to 5 officers on duty at a time covering a city of 120,000 people. Governor newsom has not yet responded to the request. Now for an update to a story we first brought you yesterday. A stolen uhaul filled with thousands of dollars worth of puppet show gear has been found, although the owner says hes lost dozens of items that he used in his show. The truck was located yesterday in richmond with some damage items still inside the vehicle. The owner of the puppets, hamid rahmanian, told abc7 news that thieves stole the uhaul early monday morning from outside his hotel in San Francisco. He says at least two boxes of puppets are still missing, as well as all of his costume forms. And more than 100,000 worth of audio and video equipment. He is thankful for what he did get back. It was ravaged through and ripped apart, but it seems its salvageable. But im sure were going to miss a few shows. But im so, you know, overwhelmed and happy and found it. Yes rahmanian is in the bay area from new york for a series of performances, as sfpd says. They also found stolen mail inside the recovered truck. Glad he got some of that stuff back. Well, today, alcatraz is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a tourist destination. Tripadvisor has rated the site as the countrys top landmark, a park ranger says that since the pandemic tours are once again selling out nearly a month in advance. Alcatraz island opened as a military fort in 1850 before transitioned to a military prison and ultimately a notorious maximum Security Federal penitentiary in 1934. But a close 29 years later. The National Park service bought alcatraz in 1972, and it opened as a National Park the following year. Well of course, halloween is less than a week away in San Franciscos cast district is gearing up for a weekend full of festive parties. The celebrations have become part of the neighborhoods culture over the years. Abc seven News Reporter tim johns went to find what we can expect this time around. The countdown is on until one of San Franciscos hallmark celebrations halloween in the castro. Its really everything to us. This is our high holiday, terry aston bennett is the president of the castro merchants association. She says this year will have a Family Friendly focus and feature everything from costume contests to Face Painting to spooky movie marathons. After being toned down for several years. Aston bennett hopes this weekend will help bring people back into the neighborhood. For many in the castro, though, halloween is a lot more than just a weekend to come out and have fun, though they tell me its a part of this rich neighborhoods identity that history stretches back decades all the way to the 1940s and includes part of aston bennetts family. She tells us her grandfather was the one who initially brought the holiday into the community. He would bring in a flatbed truck and wed have a kids costume contest and a pie eating contest and he had made this enormous famous papier mache dinosaur called stanislaus that somebody would get into and parade the kids around the neighborhood. Organizers stressed that this years event will be far different from the nighttime halloween parties. The neighborhood became famous for in the past. Sidewalks those were ultimately shut down after a mass shooting in 2006 and several other instances of violence. City Officials Say in order for that type of event to make a comeback, things would have to be radically different. I think were going to have to do a lot of planning. Its going to require a lot of Public Safety support, not a lot of thoughtfulness about how to how to roll it out in a way that is safe and respectful of the neighborhood. As for this weekend, castro leaders say everyone is welcome a chance to have fun and just be who they are in the castro is already like a flamboyant, colorful place to be. Thats of course, once you make it past the metering lights, which are not on right now. The speeds have dropped to around 12mph. There are two shooting locations, including a Bowling Alley where a childrens event was taking place. Number two in the south bay. Officials say a day old baby has died after the childs mother was killed in a hit and run in san jose. Mom was pregnant at the time of the crash near the oakridge mall. Police have made no arrests in the hit and run. Number three, the house of representatives has passed a resolution defending israel and condemning hamas as a war between the two escalates tonight. So speeds are still under the limit in the process of recovering following that multicar crash. You can see the sensors lighting up there on the bridge and into San Francisco, still averaging around ten Miles Per Hour. But again, the crash has cleared. So thats the good news there. Israel says they hit several militant targets in order to prepare for the battlefield before an expected all out Ground Invasion. Jobina. The focus remains on the hostages who are still being held in gaza. The Health Care System is collapsing after more than two weeks of israeli airstrikes. Local reports say 12 of 35 hospitals are no longer functioning. More facilities are running out of fuel for generators, and medicine is in short supply. Only eight trucks of humanitarian aid got into gaza yesterday before the war. More than 400 trucks arrived every day. The un says its operations in gaza could shut down in the coming hours if fuel is not delivered. Gloria all right. The country demands strong leadership of this body and we must not waver. We want our allies around the world to know that this body of lawmakers is reporting again to our duty stations. The house must also take up funding for ukraine, something johnson has questioned in the past. Newsom is the first us governor to meet with xi since jerry brown in 2017. Mean President Biden has said he could meet with xi if she comes to the apec summit in San Francisco next month, newsom told cnn last night he is hopeful that she will all attend at least 20 people are dead and dozens of others are injured in what police are calling a mass casualty incident in the city of lewiston, maine. Abc News Reporter ike ejiochi tells us that police are still searching for a person of interest. This morning. A mass shooting tragedy unfolding in lewiston, maine, the states second largest city. Police responding to shootings in at least two locations. There are multiple scenes in the city to include multiple hospitals. A lot of witnesses were speaking with Law Enforcement identifying 40 year old robert card as a person of interest. Authorities say he has a history of military service is a firearms instructor and was treated at a Mental Health facility over the summer after allegedly saying that he was hearing voices as if people see him, they should not approach card or make contact with him in any way. The first call came in around 7 00 from a Bowling Alley hosting a youth night for a kids bowling league. One witness saying she heard a loud bang before her father, a retired cop, corralled her and her family into a corner. I kind of like laid on top of her. And my mom was kind of on top of me. Riley dumont was bowling with her 11 year old daughter when she heard several shots during the chaos. She said she saw 3 or 4 bodies on the ground. The second shooting scene, a local restaurant about four miles from the Bowling Alley card on the run overnight, triggering a shelter in place over in lewiston and neighboring lisbon, maine, where police say they found this white subaru believed to be owned by the suspect. The car seen with the door open and lights on. Sources say hundreds of federal, state and local Law Enforcement are assisting in this active investigation. Police as far south as New Hampshire setting up roadblocks, trying to confine card in case hes on the run. Authorities earlier releasing these surveillance images showing the gunman at one of the shooting locations. It looks like to me an ar 15 or some version of it looks like to me that hes got some sort of extended magazine on. I mean, typically those weapons, you can maybe shoot up to 25 or 30 rounds with a standard magazine. President joe biden and attorney general Merrick Garland have been briefed. The white house releasing a statement offering full federal support in the wake of this horrific attack. Lewiston is a relatively small city of 36,000 people, which experts say could be an advantage to investigators. I think it really increases the odds that somebody knows who the shooter is because youre going to probably do have survivors at each location. I presume. Um, so with that, you can start tracking this guy. Authorities didnt reveal a motive overnight. Maine governor janet Mills Releasing a statement urging all people in the area to follow the directions of state and local Law Enforcement. Also lisbon, schools have been canceled for thursday. Ike ejiochi, abc news, washington. This morning, police in the south bay are looking for the people involved in a hit and run crash that left a pregnant woman and her baby dead. The crash happened tuesday night near the oak ridge mall in san jose. The woman was killed. Doctors were able to deliver her baby, but sadly, the medical Examiners Office confirms to abc seven news the baby died last night. Abc seven News Reporter lena howland is in san jose this morning. Lena well, these candles you see right behind me here were left behind from a vigil last night. And that marks the spot where it all happened. And a pregnant mother was killed in a hit and run crash just 24 hours later. Her one day old baby died in the hospital. Doctors were originally able to save her unborn baby on tuesday night by emergency surgery. According to our media partner, the mercury news, the victim has been identified as 21 year old april ziegler. Police say the woman was traveling eastbound on blossom hill when it crashed with a stolen sedan. They say two men ran away from the scene immediately after the crash. Mayor mayor matt mehan says says its unimaginable. My heart goes out to you and im just devastated by this news. Our city is praying for you. And i know theyre going to be many people in san jose who come together to support this family. This crash marks san joses 43rd traffic death of the year. At this time last year, the city had 57 traffic deaths and so far, police have not made any arrests in this case. Lets check on the weather with drew. Yeah, we had a little bit of snow over the last 12 hours in parts of the sierra, around tahoe. We had a light dusting. It was all associated with a cold front. You probably noticed that front yesterday afternoon with increased cloud cover. It was a cooler than average day. That front now is basically in Central California working its way through bakersfield this morning, behind that front right now, we have clear skies and some chilly temperatures and also some drier air has really moved in here. We look at dew point and weve talked about this a lot, especially in the summer when they were elevated and it felt muggy out there. Well now its the opposite story behind that front. We have dry air that is really worked in here. And when those dew points start getting into the 30s and when they really get below about 35 degrees, that is when you start to feel your skin really get dry, the skin starts to crack. So were getting into the weather. The season where you may need to moisturize your skin because we have that dry air overhead kind of zapping that moisture off of you. Coming to an end. Yesterday, the United Auto Workers union reached a tentative deal with ford. Abc news sources say ford has agreed to a 25 wage increase with an 11 raise in the first year of the new contract. The Union President says the deal will now be submitted to the uaw council overseeing relations with ford. Once the Council Approves workers will vote on it. Fords deal could set the pattern for agreements with General Motors and also stellantis, both of which are still negotiate ing with the union. Hundreds of Striking Hotel workers in la are about to hit the four month mark. They are demanding the hotels return to the bargaining table to work out a new deal. They want a return plan, Health Insurance and higher wages. Another big issue is the use of immigrant s who recently arrived by bus. The das office is looking into allegations that the hotels have been employing them. A lot of these hotel workers, they themselves hail from different parts of the world. And so it is ridiculous. And disgusting that the hotels will try to use vulnerable unhoused immigrants to try to put these workers against each other. But what were telling them, thats not going to work. Right. Were taking them under our wing and were going to fight for them as well. Hotel officials have said the Hotels Remain open with management and other nonunion staff filling in. Los angeles city leaders are now questioning the viability of robo taxis on their roads. As youll know, of course, that the dmv suspended cruises driverless permanent San Francisco earlier this week. Now an la Council Member is introducing a motion to limit the expansion of driverless vehicles in los angeles. He is citing safety concerns and labor issues costing people jobs. If we can protect jobs and we can protect the safety, we can have a conversation. But right now, were not having that conversation. These autonomous vehicles, these auto taxis are not ready for prime time. The testing should not be done on the public streets where our children, our grandchildren, our spouses are walking. We are not test monkey now. They dont even have cruise down la. They do have waymo. Thats the only robotaxi Company Operating on their streets. The Company Issued a statement saying that it prioritize is working transparently with policy makers and based on many productive conversations. They say theyre confident they can work together. A new report is highlighting how Climate Change is impacting the sierra. And as a result, ski season may be getting shorter. According to the Desert Research institute, temperatures around lake tahoe are expected to be nearly nine Degrees Higher 100 years from now. And that means that it will be too warm for snow to fall at the start and at the end of the traditional ski season in peak snowpack levels are projected to fall as much as 80 by late century, depending on the amount of Carbon Pollution in the region. For now, though, snow is already beginning to fall in the sierra. Look at that. This is video taken yesterday from uc berkeleys central sierra snow lab. And now it doesnt seem to be coming down too much in this clip, but it did impact some traffic there in the area. Chain controls were in effect on 80 above donner lake. The first chain controls of the season. And its tough to believe its already snowing there, right . I mean, is this about average . Yeah, were actually right on schedule. Oh, okay. Yeah october 1st snowfall. And when you go back to the story about Climate Change, despite those temperatures warming, when we do get storms, they can have a lot more moisture associated with them. So we can see bigger snow storms despite having warmer temperatures. Thats something you have to watch. We saw a lot of snow last year they went to because they were skiing until july. Yeah, july down at mammoth in Southern California. I thought they could actually go year round, but they closed it for about a month. Well see if we can get more snow over the next seven days. Do have some moisture to talk about by the back half of the seven day forecast outside this morning.
