An attempted robbery quickly escalated into a shooting. It all happened in what many consider a very safe neighborhood. They are looking for the suspect in the shooting. We know it took place behind me near angelinas cafe on 22nd and california avenue. It is clear now. It was a different scene earlier this morning. You can see police on the scene there. They sent out a tweet regarding the shooting just before 1 00 a. M. Police told the camera crew the victim may have been getting off a muni bus when it took place and led to an attempted robbery, which led to the shooting. We did do digging on crime stats in the area. Here is what we were able to find. The area doesnt see a lot of crime. Theres only been five shootings in the past year, not including the one we are talking about right now and none of them were deadly. The closest one to 22nd and california avenue shooting we are talking about this morning is at the 4700 block of geary boulevard 20 blocks from this area. The injuries to the suspect are nonlife threatening. I spoke to San Francisco police and they are looking for the suspect. If you have information to help out with this case, contact police. It stands at a category 5 storm as it continues to churn in the atlantic. It is one of the most powerful hurricanes recorded and heading toward florida. We want to bring in kari to look at the storms path. Kari . We have seen this hurricane as a category 5 make land fall and head closer to st. Martin. Over the next couple days, moving over toward san juan, puerto rico, as a catastrophic hurricane with, as you mentioned, the strongest wind speeds ever recorded in a hurricane. Over the next couple days, this will continue westward, affecting more islands over very warm waters. Sea surface temperatures at 88 degrees. Theres going to be a lot of fuel here for this to remain a major hurricane, even as it moves closer to florida by this weekend and early next week. So, very strong wind speed. A lot of flooding and rain expected. This is going to be another really heavy rainmaker and some very strong winds could cause a lot of damage over the next several days. Florida is bracing. We want to take you to where a state of emergency is being taken ahead of Hurricane Irmas possible land fall. People are scrambling to buy things ahead of the storm. People are starting to evacuate. We have seen a steady stream of cars. More traffic than usual on the road leading out of town. Officials say to start expecting evacuations there as early as today. Now, floridas governor declared a state of emergency for all of the states counties. 7,000 members of floridas National Guard are on alert as Hurricane Irma comes barrelling toward the u. S. Puerto rico and 3 million american citizens are bracing for impact. The storm made the first land fall on the caribbean island of barbuda. We have seen a run on gas, supplies, bottled water is flying off the shelves. Officials say there is time to prepare, but warning residents to get out, especially if they are under mandatory evacuation orders. Hurricane andrew slammed the coast of florida 25 years ago. Starting saturday, new construction will begin on the parking that will go up here on the existing south parking lot. Look at the tv screen. Walnut creek bart will net an additional 100 parking spot, a new passenger drop off, updated bus stop, better paths for walking and biking and a new public art installation. The initial work will be realigning access to the current parking garage. It starts this weekend and goes to the next five weekends and results in closure of entrances to the current garage. Well have an update on Hurricane Irma and a look at the weekend forecast coming up as we check in with mike, tracking the changes for the east bay. An easy drive right now. The live shot shows the metering lights were turned on at 5 22. Until two minutes ago, i saw only the fast track lanes. That is an indicator of the light commute we are watching here and the volume holding steady. Back to you. Now, the breaking news in the south bay where a Homicide Investigation is under way. The scene is in the neighborhood near the i680 and 101 interchange in san jose. Kris sanchez is there talking to investigators this morning. We have been able to find out since the last report, we checked in with you at 4 30. Reporter we were able to move closer to where the shooting may have happened or the person may have died. They are scrubbing the scene to reopen it to the neighborhood. Our sources tell us, at this point, it appears it was a driveby shooting that happened eight hours ago. The first officers were called to the scene when 911 lines lit up with calls of the shooting. Officers found an adult man shot and suspect nowhere to be seen. The victim died at the hospital. We saw the coroners van out here within the last few hours. This investigation will only disrupt neighborhood traffic here on Sunset Avenue where im standing. The detour was clear in the last half hour. I did let mike inouye know about that and we were monitoring that this morning. Police are not giving a description of the suspect or suspect vehicle. We dont know if its because they know who they are looking for or there is no suspect description. We are pressing police to find out whether there is a Greater Public risk because this gunman is still on the run. In san jose, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Thank you for that update. Other breaking news story this morning, Hurricane Irma continues to gain strength this morning as it barrels through the caribbean. Look at the size of this storm. Overnight, one of the most powerful Atlantic Hurricanes ever recorded made its first land fall. We are getting pictures now from st. Croix as the hurricane is moving through that region there. Also, new video out of northern caribbean islands as a massive storm plowed into the region. The waves were crashing along the shore. National Weather Service says the eye of the hurricane passed over barbuda. Howling winds struck the island of antigua. Right now, there are reports of damage to the buildings and radio and phone communications are said to be down. In the meantime, florida is preparing for the worst. Right now, people are scrambling to stock up on supplies. Lines for gas this morning are going around the block as people are building the sandbags they need and putting up boards. Florida keys, people there are being told to just evacuate, get out as soon as possible. Dozens of our own local First Responders on the way to florida to help with Hurricane Irma. Eight red cross vehicles left the area. Its a trick eye time for the red cross with Hurricane Harvey using so many resources. They have to be careful to keep staff and equipment here at home in case more wildfires break out. The stubborn brush fire still burning. Firefighters continue to make progress on those flames. Its 45 contained, 100 acres burned since saturday night. Thankfully no one has been hurt. No homes damaged so far. The city of freemont forced the former mayor to resign. Jeff wheeler has taken down the controversial post, the one calls democrat slave masters and another transgender people, mentally ill. He resigned last week. The city of piedmont is under new leadership. He was e lekted mayor during a meeting last night. Ak 34. faa says the raiders new stadium in las vegas wont be a hazard to aircraft. It paves the way for officials in nevada to approve construction permits. Faa was concerned the stadiums proposed 225 height would cause a problem for planes. Communication and images from the island were cut off from the world because of the storms strength. Because the island is in the eye of the storm, people are actually experiencing a quick break. The back of the left side of the boat, you can see the woman and dog thrown into the air. This happened last week. Fortunately, everyone is expected to be okay. It was extinguished shortly after the explosion. Theres no word on why it happened. Richmond police are reminding people to be careful meeting people online. A robbery suspect is now behind bars. The victim came to the neighborhood to give an estimate for a job. The man he was meeting then robbed him at gunpoint. The suspect tried to shoot the victim, but the weapon jammed. These are the pictures of the gun. The suspect fled, but police eventually caught him. Happening today, critical hearing in the kate stinely murder case. The man who used the gun will testify. The judge presiding over the case made several important rulings. Among them, the judge decided what questions lawyers can and cannot ask. She was shot on San Franciscos pier 14 two years ago. The man is accused of killing her with the agents gun. The city of santa rosa needs 1 million to up grate body cameras. It is reporting the cameras the city paid half a million for two years ago are already obsolete. Tuesday, Police Officials told the city counsel the storage system is slow and inefficient. They want to buy new cameras from a Different Company and subscribe to a cloud based storage system. We checked online to see if they prefer one storage over another. They dont. It should be up to each agency to select a particular storage method. News on the escalating tensions in north korea. Vladimir putin called for talks with the regime. This, he says are not the solution. Putin made the remarks during a meting with south koreas president today. Its after north korea detonated a hydrogen bomb. South korea expects another test soon. They won a floor vote on the bill protecting the immigrants brought to the country as immigrants. They have blasted the trump decision to get rid of the program known as daca. All of washington is trying to figure out what President Trump meant with a mid afternoon tweet. Scott mcgrew is walking back on the daca deadline. For a while, it was the most often retweeted and commented tweet tuesday afternoon. Look for yourself. Congress has six months to legalize daca, something the Obama Administration was unable to do. If they cant, i will revisit the issue. I will revisit this issue. The white house was very clear, it wants to end daca. If someone wants to save it, it has to be congress. That was Tuesday Morning. By afternoon, here comes this second option, a hint the white house might change its mind if congress does nothing. Thats not the only hint we got that the president is considering other options. In a Tuesday Morning press conference, Sarah Huckabee sanders said three times in three ways, there are options if congress doesnt take action. Its their job. If they cant do it, they need to get out of the way and let somebody take on a heavy lift and get things accomplished. What did she mean . New report of what caused that spillway to fail. 200,000 people were evacuated when the primary spillway gave way. A report blames the state saying the dam was not designed well and poorly built. People below the dam have more questions than concern. I cant sleep at night. I dont know if they know this that we are going to be secure. I cant seem surprised. I wish there was a quick fix, but i doubt there is. The report says there needs to be a comprehensive review for the dam project. The department of Water Resources is responding saying Public Safety is the states priority and they will apply Lessons Learned here. They are trying to rebuild the spillway before a november 1st deadline. 5 56. More people are riding caltrain. They released their report this week. They said more than 65,000 people ride cal train between san jose and San Francisco. The 2010 ridership increased 73 . Caltrain says thats reducing traffic and Greenhouse Gases in the bay area. An Invasive Species of fruit flies was found putting the industry at risk. It was found in a fly trap late last week. The Invasive Species probably came from hawaii. The county responded by putting out 1100 traps to capture any other flies. The agricultural commissioner says the fly can infest 250 types of fruits and vegetables. The flies lay eggs on the skin or below the skin of the fruit. The eggs hatch into maggots. Not only is there a maggot in it, but it causes the fruit to decompose and get mushy and unpalettable. Early to talk about maggots. We did some digging and found this isnt the first time its happened in the area. Farmers in dixon lost 1 million of produce when there was an infestation a decade ago. One of the fruit flies was found in vacaville. We have to control that. 5 57. A coach accused of sending inappropriate texts to swimmers is due in court for a hearing. He was an assistant coach at the quick silver Swimming Club in san jose. Police say he had a texting relationship with the teenage swimmers at the club more than a year. Police arrested him after two boys and three girls accused him of inappropriate behavior. Police in Southern California hope this newly released Surveillance Video will help find a man who vandalized a Convenience Store after they wouldnt sell him beer. It happened around 2 30 in the morning at a 7eleven in santa ana. The man was mad that he wasnt able to buy the beer even though they are not allowed to sell after 2 00 a. M. He missed it by 31 minutes. He smashed the stores front window before taking off. Ak a boy will enjoy a part of his childhood hes been missing, a playground. Hes been battling leukemia since last november. All he wanted to do is play outside. Hes been too weak because of chemotherapy. The family reached out and asked if he could get his own playground so he wouldnt have to worry about running down. They partnered with home depot to build the play area at the familys home. His mather says, this means everything to him. He is so awesome to see him be a normal kid and not think about medicine or anything like that. Its so rewarding.
